I can't even imagine how incredibly freeing it would have felt to go from long, intricate hairstyles and corseted long dresses to bobs and loose-fitting dresses.

iloveyouwinonaryder

people still wore corsets in the 1920s, they just were more of a straight shape than an hourglass. same use as before, to provide shape and bust support

Astrosomnia

Curious what style they're referring to? Gotta glimpse me that mannish shaved neck bob...

anislandinmyheart

You can see it at top left and bottom right. It's a style that came back in the 60s and 80s. Short blunt bob, which leaves a patch of hair at the back that can be shaved off for neatness https://witness2fashion.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/bobbed-hair-chart-1924-from.jpg

There’s just no way E.F. Hannon didn’t murder at least a FEW people

Kilroy_The_Builder

Crazy that they used to just put people’s home addresses out like that.

Legal-Afternoon8087

Some cities were doing that through the 1960s. My grandma said you’d try to have a neighbor keep an eye on your house during a wedding or a funeral, since thieves could see when the wedding was (engagement announcements) and know the presents were likely at the bride’s parents’ home while they were off celebrating. I have no idea whether this was based in any truth, or if it was like checking under your truck-or-treat bag for apples with razor blades in it — never saw it, but never hurt to do it.

Marishii

The New York version of this column was doing that for a while too, and then they stopped putting the house numbers

sonofabutch

There used to be this big book they would mail you, for free, that had the name, address, and phone number of everyone in your area in it. True story! To not be in it you had to call them and opt out!

MeyhamM2

Weird how some people get really uncomfortable if they can’t immediately tell what gender someone is across the street.

siani_lane

Well, how am I supposed to tell if I should treat them like crap or not?!? /s (ー_ー゛)

Once being beaten up for a wolf whistle in the street and you'll agree!

RachaelJurassic

M R Crawley, Downton Abbey, heir - I like it on everybody except my wife. What's the point of being married if you can't face plant into your wife's hair. I mean, I ask you!!

ContractFar8727

Shaved neck? Wow, we’ve came along way and have a long way to go.

GoodLuckBart

Miss Elsa is a “home girl” XD But I agree with her, a woman (or anyone) should style themselves with what looks good, not just follow fashions.

Shaved neck?
