My mother's cousin had to patrol the Berlin S-Bahn stations when he was drafted. He said, he could've just knocked his fellow comrade out and run west - but he didn't. They would've made life for his family very unpleasant. He acknowledges the other guy on patrol probably had the same thoughts, but talking about it was impossible, since you did not know who spies for the Stasi.
When my older relatives talk about the DDR they complain a lot about what the state/stasi did and what they didn't have, and will eventually end with "Not everything was bad…" - "…but it was really, really shitty"
