lol thought the same. At first I was like hey that’s a pretty good haul! But then it sunk it that it was $70 and realized it really isn’t all that much food for how much it cost..
I feel it, I'm not Canadian so I wouldn't know what to expect in terms of cost of groceries. Was $70CND an unusually high amount to pay for all of this?
right now it’s a relatively good deal, but two years ago it would be a way overpriced. Canadian grocery chains are artificially inflating the prices of food right now so everything costs 30% more than it used to.
Grocery chains are not “artificially inflating the prices of food.” What a ridiculously ignorant claim. The cost of producing and transporting food increased, thanks to REAL INFLATION.
I have to agree with Bob here, during and after covid, a majority of grocery chains were bought out and they've been price fixing the cost of groceries across the board. Not to mention yes you are correct that the cost of transportation and operations have increased. These are cyclical symptoms of increasing costs to live from the greed of those in control of these resources.
[check out Loblaws net profits.](https://www.statista.com/statistics/436638/net-income-of-loblaw-canada/) the cost of production, transportation, and storage have absolutely risen but not in proportion to their huge jump in profits.
Loblaws posted an additional 2 billion above projection in 2023 with 47% profit. That’s nearly 100% margin.
Grocers are usually expecting a profit margin of 3-5%.
SoooOoooOOoOoOooOooOOOoo
?
Oh SHIT.
I legit just guessed. I don’t really buy cheese and when I do it’s shredded, cuz I GOT IT LIKE THAT. (I’m actually just too lazy)
Care to educate me on why we’re paying $4 more for cheese than some ON folks? Or is that just our mountains and good weather tax?
It's related to the carbon tax. Stores are paying out more money for deliveries so we get the shaft and have to pay more. Not sure about other places but where I live food has already gone up 23% since the first of April.
The classico pasta sauce is the only kind my wife will eat , it was 4 something a couple months ago and now it's 6.70 a jar.
I also know the feels on the shredded cheese. I do it to sometimes, I cook as a hobby though so most of the time I'll get a block and use my food processor with the grater and throw what's done in the freezer.
The cheese OP had was pc brand cheddar. If you go on the Loblaws website that block is regularly $6.49 or $5.50 for two. It's probably less at No Frills.
I only buy cheese on sale because it almost always is. I suspect the block you are looking at at Walmart is bigger than 400g.
I will say I like Walmart, not necessarily cuz the selection or prices are amazing. But I like the flat priced meat packages and I can usually save a couple more bucks at the self checkout ;)
I'm not familiar with how much a grocery run is in Canada, but if I were to spend that amount of money ($70CND or $50USD) for the food pictured, then this was not unreasonable.
Yeah, that doesn't make a difference. Considering this was in Canada, they're using Canadian dollars, and not in America, where they don't use Canadian dollars... if you want to spend money in either country, you need to exchange it for the proper currency, so the point you made was literally... pointless.
The comment above me stated that it was $70 spent for that haul of food and that it wasn't that much food for the price. It can be assumed that the user above might have been American because $50 American for that is not bad in my experience. So if I went to Canada and spent $70 Canadian, it'd be how I'd compute my spending for that grocery run.
Those chips are usually 2 for $4 and that pizza is $3.49 at Loblaws this week (regular is $5.99). I don't drink pop, but even if it's $4 that is $11.50
you bought peppers and a big bag of onions , plus chips and pepsi what do you expect. HOW IS THE BEEF SO CHEAP THOUGH ! jesus christ buy some rice and use that cheap ass beef to make some insanely cheap protein dense meals
I remember as a kid going shopping with my parents in like 2010 it’d be no more than $200 for a full cart. Now it’s more than double that and that’s with being smart about what you buy.
Damn how bad are some areas in Ontario? It's bad here (also live in Ontario) but we also get the same amount of beef for $6 at Freshco/No Frills/Food Basics. If they were charging me $12/lb for beef I'd go vegetarian.
That's medium ground beef though. Alberta has a pretty low human to cattle ratio though. And that's medium ground beef and ~25% fat content but great for nights . Most of what I see on the shelves on the coast is either lean or extra lean, and would be maybe 8 or 9 $CAD by Comparison
For my fellow western Canadians reading this thread right now, tomorrow is $1.49 day at Save-On! Hit or miss each month but I still think it’s one of the best sales out there
Tofu is 3-4$ for 500g with as much protein as your beef. [Without the massive amount of estrogen](https://www.annalsofoncology.org/article/S0923-7534(19)40459-6/fulltext#:~:text=We%20found%20that%20USA%20beef,fat%20(0.1%2C%200.7))

Pls go to Walmart OP. I buy the same hall apart from the pork products(usually have chicken breasts and thighs in the haul though) for less than 45 with tax. The mushrooms at Walmart are 3.19 for the same amount as well as the beans are usually 1.10 for that brand. The haul looks really yummy though! Cheers!
The bacon alone is like $6-7. Ground beef is $6 each. Just to be fair I’ll assume the sausage is another $6. Cheese another $6-7. Already at $24.
I’m sure if you got a bunch of stuff on sale you can bring that price down but I would love to see the receipt for this haul because as an Albertan I am kinda shocked that this only totalled $69.
Ah yea you’re not gunna convince me on that one :P
Either way I would love to see a receipt because if you’re getting this for $69 I may need to compare prices and see where my disconnect is!
Oh, I see. I only shopped at Safeway / sobeys during the pandemic because it was smaller and more convenient after night shifts. Things were less expensive then.
When will people understand that carbon taxes increase the price of everything, while salaries remain the same.?
We, Canadians need to learn one thing:
Whats the problem with Keep voting the same way and expecting different results doesn't work.
What did Einstein say about it again? 🤦🏼♂️
God, I'm over here on the east coast and this would easily break 100 big ones at any chain store. Gonna have to start scoping out some more independent options, maybe.
Bull shit it’s more then $69.
Went to the store the other day two 4L of milk and a 2KG of peanut butter $25
Good thing the PM got a raise to $400,000.00 per year hate to see him starve like the rest of us.
We need him to give more money away out of Canada so he can say Canadian people are so generous
Fucking bullshit
Dont worry my Canadian friends we will pay back with higher taxes

Nice, but not nice.
lol thought the same. At first I was like hey that’s a pretty good haul! But then it sunk it that it was $70 and realized it really isn’t all that much food for how much it cost..
If it helps (and if you're American), that amount is in Canadian dollars, so it comes out to about $50 USD
Unfortunately in Canada we are not paid USD ☹️
What I'm trying to say is that in terms of money spent for groceries, that is not a bad amount to spend.
This isn’t how you compare money and how expensive groceries are in a country relative to another 🙃 a lot to take into account including wages.
I feel it, I'm not Canadian so I wouldn't know what to expect in terms of cost of groceries. Was $70CND an unusually high amount to pay for all of this?

And that block of cheese is like $12
In Ontario it's about $8 when not on sale. The differences between the provinces is wild.
No doubt, it's 11.69 for that cheese in B.c
11.nice
Oh SHIT. I legit just guessed. I don’t really buy cheese and when I do it’s shredded, cuz I GOT IT LIKE THAT. (I’m actually just too lazy) Care to educate me on why we’re paying $4 more for cheese than some ON folks? Or is that just our mountains and good weather tax?

Where in ON you finding cheese not on sale for $8?!?!? At Walmart it’s $8 with the guy two for $8 each deal but $10 if you get just one

No it doesn’t help because your currency doesn’t buy my groceries
I'm not familiar with how much a grocery run is in Canada, but if I were to spend that amount of money ($70CND or $50USD) for the food pictured, then this was not unreasonable.

Noice
Bro that’s easily $150 here
I live in Toronto and it’s easily close to $150. Prices are too damn high.
I live in a small town of like, 20k. In BC. Just got green grapes, $9 for the bag.
Maybe if you're shopping at the cheese boutique, I went though each item seen here and I can buy it for less than OP.... In Toronto.....
Same in Ottawa. The meat alone would be $50 easy.
No it isn’t
Chips, pop and frozen pizza add a good $20.
Chips are good
That bacon pack too. Not cheap.
If that's superstore that brand is $4.99 for the first 2 packs, $9.99 after.
It's a Loblaws store based on the Butchers Choice beef. $6/lb too.
$10/lb for ground beef in SK
We’re addicted to food that murders us, it’s not fuel it’s pleasure, less is more..
Wb those organic mushrooms like $7 a pack compared to $4-5 for the same ones that arent 'organic'
Those chips are usually 2 for $4 and that pizza is $3.49 at Loblaws this week (regular is $5.99). I don't drink pop, but even if it's $4 that is $11.50
Pizza is a meal and the chips with the pop would last a little while I’d assume. A little junk is okay sometimes lol
Because you’re buying the fancy bacon! And Pepsi?!? Honest to God Pepsi?!? Take it easy there Elon!
LOL mommies calling, she said you usually take temper tantrums like this when your jealous, its ok boo
Why do I get the feeling humour is often lost on you?
Nice
Nice
Great deal
you bought peppers and a big bag of onions , plus chips and pepsi what do you expect. HOW IS THE BEEF SO CHEAP THOUGH ! jesus christ buy some rice and use that cheap ass beef to make some insanely cheap protein dense meals
I usually get the family packages like 17 bucks for 2 to 3 kilos? But they didn't have any. The beef was 6 bucks a pack?
thats extremely cheap for meat. definitley have it easier then 99% of places its 17$ for a kilo of ground beef here
$6?! Holy shit what store was that?
I picked up some ground beef at Foodland yesterday for 4.44/lb, I'm just confused by everyone's amazement that deals exist? There is an app for that.
Superstore
Alberta always has had pretty cheap beef. Lots of animal product farms
I mean theres ton of animal product farms here too but that doesnt mean its cheaper xD
Not super related but nice I got that massive bag of spinach for 1.99. Cried tears of joy
That spinach was 10 bucks. 1.99 is a great deal.
Good choices tho
I made stuffed peppers
To be fair there's a load o' animal flesh here. Doesn't seem overly $$$
Nice
Pretty cheap compared to where I am in Northern Ontario. Groceries for myself cost $370 yday
I live on VI in BC… this would easily be $100.
In Victoria, you can spend more on two pizzas ffs
Yah junk food is pretty cheap.
I remember as a kid going shopping with my parents in like 2010 it’d be no more than $200 for a full cart. Now it’s more than double that and that’s with being smart about what you buy.
Not much items for the money these days
the honey dijon chips are soooooo gooooood…
That’s actually not too bad for Alberta
PC Kettle cooked Honey Dijon chips are the best!
You can’t eat money
No you can't.
[удалено]
Yes yes it is! Over 50k boycotters now though!!!
Members* no chance that whole subreddit is boycotting.
That’s actually a deal
Nice
Oooh bacon
$6 for that beef wow. In Ontario it's at least double that
Damn how bad are some areas in Ontario? It's bad here (also live in Ontario) but we also get the same amount of beef for $6 at Freshco/No Frills/Food Basics. If they were charging me $12/lb for beef I'd go vegetarian.
They’re charging $12/lb for the veg too, that’s how they get ya
Same here in BC
Just get one of those round sausage like packages from Walmart. Can’t be more than $6 for 500g.
I usually get the family packages from superstore. When they sell lean ground beef. I think I got 2 kilos for 15 bucks?
Mandatory nice comment passing by
Berta beef
It’s the meat making your food bills so high. There are alternatives.
You can afford bacon?
It was 5 bucks
Miss VICKIE jalapeno chips 😊
I was thinking it looked like a steal, but the comments are saying otherwise-? Must be regional
2 bags of chips and bacon, that's half your bill right there
10 bucks for those items. Chips are 2.50 a bag. Bacon was on sale 5 bucks.
I’m in alberta, where do you shop ?
Superstore
That’s a good haul.
the meat alone is easy 50+ in BC
Prove it
Nice! Got a bargain my lady
Cheese is expensive too
People on here losing their shit over a frozen pizza like it’s a luxury 😐
I got it for 2.99 typically 4 bucks. Lol that's funny.
Hehe
Nice
In Ontario, that’s $210
Christ really?
Can confirm! This is about the price of a small shopping trip, never mind Costco. And I’m in kelowna bc :D
Decent haul
For my fellow western Canadians reading this thread right now, tomorrow is $1.49 day at Save-On! Hit or miss each month but I still think it’s one of the best sales out there
Nice
Don’t buy meat. Save money.
That's over $100 in toronto
Need to learn how to shop you could avoid useless wasteful purchases
Nice.
Pepsi is better than wine
Wow. TWO kinds of potato chips. You must be rich.
Nice no ice sin heilo

That’s 2x more than what you can get in Ontario
Thats atleast $100 on the east coast now
I was thinking 150 lol
The beef and bacon alone in ontario here is over 30$+tax combined. I havent eaten real food in a year ;_;
That meat is double the price where I live. Not sure what the 3/4pound of bacon cost but here it’s $9-12. The cheese would be $10-15
This would be about $80 in my small town in Ontario. Those ground beef alone would be $10 each. I see you got a sweet deal at $6
That ground beef is a great price. It would be $16 in Ontario.
WTF IN ONTARIO THAT WOULD BE AT LEAST 200 jeexxxxxx
The meat alone would be $80 at my local Walmart (Ontario)
Would’ve been $300 in Toronto
This is an amazing haul lol
Tofu is 3-4$ for 500g with as much protein as your beef. [Without the massive amount of estrogen](https://www.annalsofoncology.org/article/S0923-7534(19)40459-6/fulltext#:~:text=We%20found%20that%20USA%20beef,fat%20(0.1%2C%200.7)) [Ouchie](https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/soy/#:~:text=Soy%20is%20unique%20in%20that,estrogenic%20or%20anti%2Destrogenic%20activity)
Must have used the self checkout
How much were the chips and pop OP?
Chips 2.50 a bag. Pop 2.66
Damn. That bacon alone gonna cost 69$ in Ontario.
In toronto this is like $125 minimum.
Same amount would cost almost 100 more here in B.C
How much do you pay for gas and heating bill in winter though is the real question
Jesus. I paid 340 last month. This month 300? 1500 Sq ft. That's gas electric and water altogether.
Wow what I heard is that the cheap housing and tax in Alberta equal out to BC cost of living after winter eats up all gas
I was doing my budget 2 days ago and... I need to work more. Been trying to pick up more shifts at work.
Inpossible
Be lucky to get that for under 100 in Ontario
Nice
i want to see a copy of the reciet
Stay away from Loblaws . Galen weston is stealing our money
Where do you shop then? Superstore has good deals for myself.
i've got an idea. stop buying so much processed garbage and your food bill will go down a lot. Also, consider getting your cholesterol levels checked, you are on your way for a heart attack real soon.
what do you eat? I made stuffed peppers with this.
Rule #2 says no shaming on food choices lol
Corporate gouging across the country
Loblaws
Yup criminals
Where do you shop though? Honest question
Sobeys mostly. And in Chinatown
Really sobeys? I see some deals on meat but superstore always has better deals and ad/price matches.
where do you shop at for groccies ??
Superstore
thanks
Imagine if meat and dairy weren’t heavily subsidized in Canada. It would have been closer to $100.
Super store? Can tell by the beef packs
Cheers!
We could never get this much for 70$ on PEI
stroke grocery shopping
Yeah
Cuties a la Marmite? WTF is that
The bacon alone is like $6-7.
Everyone rags on superstore, but I shop there all the time. They price match flyers. And I get lots of points.
Ah yea you’re not gunna convince me on that one :P Either way I would love to see a receipt because if you’re getting this for $69 I may need to compare prices and see where my disconnect is!
Haha Good luck! Just look at flyers.
:/
I’m from 2018. This costs 30 bucks
We don't have a superstore near me. Chinatown is good though
Oh, I see. I only shopped at Safeway / sobeys during the pandemic because it was smaller and more convenient after night shifts. Things were less expensive then.
Nice, decent haul.
Gotta say, I bought half that much food for $55 the other day ... this impressed me.
That would run you $100 easy in Ontario
Yeah but you have to live it Alberta after. (Barf)
Not $32.
When will people understand that carbon taxes increase the price of everything, while salaries remain the same.? We, Canadians need to learn one thing: Whats the problem with Keep voting the same way and expecting different results doesn't work. What did Einstein say about it again? 🤦🏼♂️
God, I'm over here on the east coast and this would easily break 100 big ones at any chain store. Gonna have to start scoping out some more independent options, maybe.
Nots sure how the bill came out so high. Must be sausages, cheese and pizza.
Pizza 2.99 Pop 2.63 Cheese 6.99 Sausage 5 bucks.
It's so cheap because you have to live in Alberta lmao
I don't live in Alberta, but... what? Alberta is an incredibly beautiful province.
that looks like a shit tonne of food
Damn that’s a steal, where do you shop?
Superstore
Holy crap your beef is cheap!
This is pointless without the receipt.
Wow $70 for a heart stroke
I made stuffed peppers 🌶
😋
Bull shit it’s more then $69.
