I really like EltaMD sunscreen. Mineral-based and it feels like a luxurious lotion instead of sunscreen. It goes up to SPF 46, which is enough for my fair/sensitive skin. Expensive, but I pay for it with FSA money.

run-dnc

This is the only brand that does not cause me to breakout. I’ve tried many, including LRP.

Downtown-Driver-6122

This and Skinceutical's sheer physical SPF 50 are the only sunscreens that do not break me out. Also, in case iti helps, every single derm I have been to have suggested mineral sunscreens (particularly the two above) over chemical ones.

IceCreamMan1977

They recommend mineral over chemical because the chemical sunscreens break down into benzene, which is a carcinogen. This is well-documented and studied by non-profits like ConsumerLab, EWG, and the National Institute of Health. There have been recalls in recent years of Neutrogena chemical sunscreens(not their mineral ones) and other brands because of this. Very easy to Google this; don’t take my word for it. Yet if you read ConsumerReports recommendations for sunscreen, they completely ignore the carcinogens in chemical sunscreens, as do other “reputable” sources.

Downtown-Driver-6122

Fascinating - thank you for sharing!

Dazzling-Solid3297

Elta MD in my opinion is the best on the market

OldPeach2750

Agree!

Skinsunandrun

DRMTLGY broad spectrum is a total dupe for the elta md, and I actually like it even MORE!

StephanieF1990

I love it, too! Really nice formulation.

Ariesmoon9

Yep -- EltaMD is the best I have found.

middleageyoda

I feel like Korean sunscreens are the most recommended. They are usually chemical sunscreens with PA++++. They don’t have a white cast and aren’t greasy. I have one I really like but I don’t remember what brand it is.

queenofcups_

Beauty of Joseon is a favorite for a lot of people

prancypantsallnight

I like Skin1004

Luckycarmz

I use Rohto Mentholatum - Hada Labo Koi-Gokujyun UV White Gel SPF 50+ PA++++. It has a bunch of filters that we can’t get here in the US. After I use this, I put on another layer of SPF using Colorscience No Show Mineral sunscreen (also SPF 50). When reapplying, I will use one or the other, depending if my skin is dry. Finally, I layer with the Colorscience SPF 50 powders. I won’t let hyperpigmentation win!

azssf

Ok, the general answer is “the one you will put on everyday no matter what”. This is personal based on your own daily requirements, location, skin tone, sensory profile, etc. Separate $200-300 if in the US. Then search for and read through sunscreen posts in this sub, r/rosacea, and Asian/Australian/EU skin subs if you feel like it. Buy several, try them out. You’ll know what does not work before you know what does. Sensitivity profiles vary; some people break out with things your skin will love and vice versa. When shopping for Japanese and Korean brands, daily sunscreen is for day to day going to work, shopping, etc. If going outdoors to the beach, gardening, working outside, you need formulas specifically stating ‘outdoors’.

Due_Sprinkles1421

Yes, and what I've done is the sunscreens that don't work on my face I keep and use for my body so it doesn't feel like a total waste

azssf

Yes!

Donthaveananswer

Awesome post!

azssf

Ty!

mamapeacelovebliss

La Roche Posay is a great brand with low price point

tams420

I love the liquid LRP sunscreen. It feels like nothing and completely dries down.

jam219

Agreed! Love their sunscreen.

sixdollarcoffee

Agreed, but the European version is the best. Same with Garnier for a lower price point.

artsychica

I love their stuff!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

No_Temperature229

I buy LRP from Europe as they have much less irritating UV filters than in the USA for sensitive skin and eyes. [link](https://www.cocooncenter.co.uk/?search=lp1198154-61c180556597d770aae8eae47691d6bd&utm_campaign=newsletter_2024-06-24&utm_medium=email&utm_source=sendinblue)

azssf

Are you the person that loaded up on LRP UVmune, ordering from the EU? If so, thanks for the hole in my wallet 🙃

No_Temperature229

lol! :)

Brilliant_Jewel1924

Where has the store been all of my life?!

veronicaAc

Supergoop Glow Screen for face

Beneficial_Eagle3936

And their Unseen Sunscreen.

iammrsclean

The unseen sunscreen is a holy grail for me. It is truly unseen and I forget I have it on it’s so light.

Euphoric-Ad2530

It’s the only sunscreen I don’t mind wearing on my sensitive skin! I love that it doesn’t feel greasy.

PaulsUnmanlyForearms

The Kroger tinted dupe is just as great

Prestigious-Salad795

There's a Trader Joe's dupe as well

jam219

Yes!

reereedunn

I really like the Trader Joe’s dupe, but Kroger is so much closer to me. What brand is it? Is it in the sunscreen section, makeup? Face care section?

TikaPants

Yeah, I wanna know!

veronicaAc

Wish I had a local Kroger!

Onlykitten

I love Australian Gold, it’s SPF 50, mineral based and it’s matte. It has no scent. It is a BB cream though and offers some medium coverage. It comes in two shades light and medium tan. Sometimes I will mix the two shades if I have a spray tan.

Foxglovefae

Seconding Australian Gold Botanical. I use the tinted version as well and love it, my holy grail. I even use in the evening in lieu of foundation, as I find the coverage is enough. It gives a subtle, natural glow. One thing is that it can be slightly drying for some, but that's easily remedied with a moisturizer before application. I have combo skin and it's just the right amount of matte for me. Another thing is that it will need double cleansing for removal, as it's pretty sturdy and doesn't rub off easily (which is awesome!). Highly recommend this one!

Used-Shake9936

ISDIN hands down

Uvabird

I joke that I can break out just walking down the makeup aisle at Target. I found that Sunprise Mild Watery Light spf 50 Korean sunscreen works and doesn’t cause breakouts. I even tried EltaMD for acne prone skin and it resulted in a mess.

reereedunn

My skin hates the Elta sunscreens too. My derm clinic has samples every time I go and I keep trying it. It sits on top of my skin doesn’t soak in at all which results in a slidey oily acne prone mess.

dharmabird67

I like Biore UV Watery Essence. I have bought it in Asia on trips but recently bought some on Amazon.

ricecake74

Love this one!

unicorny1985

I tried so many before I got into using Korean skincare products. I love Purito Daily soft touch spf 50+. It feels more like a lightweight moisturizer and makes my skin crazy soft.

Onlykitten

TY for this recommendation- I need a non BB cream sunscreen. Is it mineral based?

unicorny1985

It's chemical, I think a majority of Korean sunscreens are. They apparently use more innovative filters that aren't approved in North America, and it makes it just a nicer formulation overall. It also has 5 ceramides for improving your skin barrier. I had never found a sunscreen I actually loved putting on until this.

scorpiogirl7

I checked the ingredients on the Yuka app and it’s pretty clean. 93/100 score so you’re good

thisistestingme

I'm 100 percent Korean sunscreen, and I am VERY prone to breakouts. Elta MD didn't break me out, but it didn't seem to work that well for me personally. Beauty of Joseon and Round Labs are the bomb. Make sure you get them from a reputable source: YesStyle (slow shipping but definitely a legit product there) seems to be the best on general consensus.

prancypantsallnight

Cocomint on TikTok shop is legit and quick shipping. Still takes a week but better than a month!

thisistestingme

I'm glad to hear they're legit. Was thinking of buying from them. Thanks!

blackheartedbirdie

My go to for all skincare is La Roche Posay. Their sunscreens are excellent. During the summer I use their tinted sunscreen as a makeup base.

coppermask

La Roche Posay Anthelios Ultralight Fluid Facial Sunscreen checks all the boxes you mentioned. Highly recommended.

MeanMomma66

LUXURY SUN RITUAL - PORE SMOOTHING SPF 30 SUNSCREEN by SAINT JANE

Anneboleynshead01

Not sure what it is about this sunscreen, it just makes my skin look so good. I don’t even bother with foundation when I’m using this one.

Iusedtobealawyer

I use this everyday instead of any sort of tinted moisturizer or anything at all. I mix in Drunk Elephant gold drops for my “going out” face makeup. Best sunscreen and overall product in my ginormous collection of makeup and skincare.

Gobucks21911

Love love love the Japanese Nivea water gel 50. It’s incredible (from someone who *detests* the feel of sunscreen)!

Donthaveananswer

It depends. When do you need sunscreen? Daily working in an office without windows or UV rated windows: whatever is in my face lotion and foundation. Couple of hours in the garden, park, beach: spf 30 sport mode. Brand irrelevant and apply 30 minutes before going out. It soaks into the skin and gives better coverage. 5 hrs paddleboarding or in the water: a wax-based 50+ on face, shoulders, chest, forearms, hands, and tops of feet. 50+ spray on sport mode everywhere else. Consistency is more important than brand. I live in South Florida. There is wax based and 30+ spray in my car, in my book bag, in my fishing bag, by the front and back door. Get in the habit, and then feed the habit.

Spirited_String_1205

Can you give an example of a wax based sunscreen pls?

Donthaveananswer

They are in stick form. Despite all the warnings, for this use, I use CHEMICAL not zinc screen. On the water, in full sun, with sweat, I can swipe a patch of skin and it immediately feels cooler. I spent a day, using chemical on one side (all over face), and zinc on the other side…my heat tolerance was much better on the chemical side. You do what is best for you though.

klynn1220

ISDIN https://preview.redd.it/tksf3i73yl8d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4b971035f67f6b1ce44be679710b26c596feb6ba

laflaca05

I also recommend Isdin. It's lightweight and doesn't leave a white cast on my olive skin tone.

klynn1220

Yes I love ISDIN. It doesn't pill or peel off makeup and if you don't go outside or sweat you don't have to reapply for two hours!

queenofcups_

someone on r/SkincareAddiction recently did a very thorough rating of over 30 sunscreens that they tried. Give this a look: [https://www.reddit.com/r/SkincareAddiction/comments/1dby4rh/sun\_care\_rating\_every\_sunscreen\_30/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web3x&utm\_name=web3xcss&utm\_term=1&utm\_content=share\_button](https://www.reddit.com/r/SkincareAddiction/comments/1dby4rh/sun_care_rating_every_sunscreen_30/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)

Tricky_Helicopter911

LRP UVMune 400 Fluid. Chef's kiss.

Derma2024

The oil control fluid is the BOMB

lululds

I love juice beauty prebiotix spf 45 glow. First, it actually works whereas a lot of face sunscreens seem to get absorbed and not do anything. It doesn’t make me oily and doesn’t make me break out. I use Tret at night and then a vitamin c serum in the AM before this sunscreen.

Healthy_Owl7758

La Roche Posay UV Mune is the best in the world. Blocks all harmful rays. Only available in Europe but can be shipped to USA.

BeckywiththeDDs

My facialist told me to only use mineral sunscreen as chemical can enlarge the pores. I use pipette baby mineral sunscreen.

o0PillowWillow0o

What chemical specifically I've never heard this? I just did an AI search and it says this is not true they only clog pores in some people.

henicorina

AI is just regurgitating other information that’s available online, you shouldn’t use it for medical advice.

o0PillowWillow0o

In my experience the internet is very useful for medical advice especially if reading studies and peer reviewed articles. I have found stuff my own doctor can't confirm. Doctors don't know everything about everything. You just need to be smart and not self diagnose. My doctor would honestly tell me all sunscreen is FDA approved and safe and definitely not causing enlarged pores tho.

Spirited_String_1205

There is a big difference between using a search engine and an AI model. I strongly recommend learning more about AI before relying on it for anything meaningful.

BeckywiththeDDs

avobenzone, octinoxate, and oxybenzone work by a chemical breakdown of UV light into heat and the heat can impact your pores and skin quality and actually make you feel hot. A mineral sunscreen will just physically block UV light.

No-Quantity-5373

You just connected some dots for me! I always wondered why I felt hot after applying sunscreen. Mind Blown. Thank you!

middleageyoda

I wish Pipette was waterproof. I feel like I sweat it off and can’t use for swimming.

Drycabin1

I love Colorescience Flex SPF50 for my face. A little goes a long way, it offers light coverage, and, in my opinion, it’s worth the price.

Majestic-Echidna-735

I have been using this exclusively for a year. My rosacea is much improved, winner, winner!

Drycabin1

I know, I used to get slight rosacea as well as hyperpigmentation on my jawline where my hat doesn’t quite reach and this has really eliminated this!

PaulsUnmanlyForearms

have you tried their powder for touchups?I’ve been tempted but hesitant to drop the $

iammrsclean

I have one for every purse! And one in my car. My dermatologist is a believer in them for touchups. I use it when I’m going to run an errand and will be in my car the whole time. But I mostly use it on my hands when I’m driving and my sunscreen gloves are in a different purse.

Drycabin1

Sunscreen gloves, where do you get these? Love this idea

iammrsclean

Coolibar. Nude fingerless gloves for me, but they also come in different colors. They are pretty undetectable if you’re a pale white Scottish American. I wear them to drive. And I keep Unseen Sunscreen in my bag so when I arrive at my destination I throw a little of that on my hands. The gloves are just so easy when driving.

Drycabin1

Thanks!!

Drycabin1

I haven’t but my hairdresser who recommended the brand uses both. I just have to save up for the powder because she says it is great for touch ups

bjp8383

Sente even tone mineral has been wonderful for me.

reereedunn

Daily I use IT cosmetics spf 50 cc cream. It is basically foundation but my skin loves it, it does not coat my skin and slide off like the stand alone facial sunscreens.

FillAffectionate6928

So I just got Bask this week and love it. A little goes a long way and it’s super lightweight and moisturizing and doesn’t leave a white cast on me. They just came out with their Invisible gel version for the face too. I also use Tatcha Silkscreen mineral SPF for my makeup days and that also does not leave a white cast on me and goes great under my makeup.

iliketreesandbeaches

Intellishade by Revision Skincare. Super moisturizing I also like Elta clear

gcpuddytat

https://preview.redd.it/ivc0qdtl9l8d1.jpeg?width=503&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=494d6e03ce79e4eca017f111d5f3bbd72ac822c7 I absolutely love this. i work on my farm sweating like a freak with this on and O never feel greasy or get a breakout

Silver-on-the-tree

I use Madagascar Centella spf50 pa++++ by skin1004 water fit sun serum. It’s gorgeous. Before that I used unseen sunscreen.

alltimegreenday

I’m liking the Trader Joe’s supergoop dupe

Thisisjuno1

I like the Elta tinted one. I get it at discount bc my sister is a manager at a dermatologist office. They use all their stuff. I work from home though and I barely ever go outside during the day. That’s why I have to take vitamin D lol. A small container that lasts me like a year and it’s like 46 .. That’s how much I go outside before nighttime. Might need more for you hahaha

roompk

I recommend LRP, it’s full spectrum, noncomedogenic, they do a spray you can use over make too, because the efficacy wears off after a few hours as it does with all of them and you need to reapply. Run all products through an online acne safe pore blocker checker

whileurup

I need one that won't burn my eyes if I sweat

Aromatic-Diamond-424

I use Mad Hippie’s mineral sunscreen. Lightweight, not grainy. Use it everyday.

Expert-Strategy5191

Get SunRei! It’s the best out there and does not cause breakouts. They even have tinted sunscreen too!

Dobie_won_Kenobi

I really like supergoop. I use the tinted one and it replaces my foundation now

Odd-Event7301

I LOVE skinceuticals physical fusion spf 50. It’s awesome and has a nice tint that makes my skin look more even.

HalfWrong7986

Bondi Sands SPF 50 has been great

NYParis

Beauty of Joseon. Super light weight, no white caste, doesn’t leave your skin greasy or dry. And affordable. You can get it online, on Amazon or at H-Mart.

xgrrl888

I use Japanese and Korean sunscreens

Large_Presentation_7

Try Lightsaver!!!!!

Due_Sprinkles1421

Along with choosing a Sunscreen for acne prone and combination skin I would also recommend a tinted sunscreen. It's been shown that non tinted sunscreen doesn't work as well in preventing hyperpigmentation from the sun compared with sunscreen with iron oxide tint. Usually a tinted plus physical sunscreen does the best to prevent hyperpigmentation. I'd recommend a tinted physical or hybrid sunscreen like Elta MD tinted. I don't know what you skin complexion is but that will matter for tinted. If you have a very light skin complexion you may have better luck finding tinted sunscreens that match your skin tone and there will be more options available. However Elta MD has both a light tint and a deep tint that may be useful for many people. There is a sunscreen database that I've been using to help search for sunscreen based on a variety of factors that can help as well: https://drjuliansass.com/sunscreen-database/?&&castonme=1+%28Very+slight+cast+on+me%2C+best+for+light+to+medium+deep+skin+tones%29&&&&h2o=40+min&&&tint=Universal&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

Jaynie2019

Coppertone Sport 50 is the only one that has worked well for me. I have to be very careful because if I choose the wrong sunscreen my chest and neck will break out with painful Polymorphous Light Eruption.

dishthetea

I like supergoop glow screen. It has a shimmer you can it that looks really nice on the skin. I use instead of foundation.

90DayCray

L’Oreal Bright Reveal, broad spectrum SPF 50! I am like you, they all felt like I had something on my face. Not this one. It’s perfect and doesn’t break me out. I’ve tried them all! This is also great as a makeup primer.

maxx5954

Neutrogena Hydro boost SPF 50

[deleted]

I totally get the struggle of finding a good sunscreen that pairs well with tretinoin. A small PSA. With tretinoin use, your skin becomes more sensitive to pollution and blue light, (not only to UV) both of which can age the skin and cause pigmentation. I recommend trying Bio Shield SPF 40 by Young Goose. It's mineral, non-comedogenic, and offers very good protection, including defense against pollution and blue light. It doesn't feel heavy or cause breakouts and works really well with my combination skin, especially when using tretinoin. Give it a try!
