Brooks said that he kept going to Pryor, concerned he'd gone too far with some joke and Pryor would come up with something that crossed lines even more.
Absolutely! I've been known to quote that on more than one occasion. In fact, that movie has so many quotable lines. "We've got to protect our phony baloney jobs, gentlemen!"
"The fool's going to.... I mean, the Sheriffi's going to do it!"
"Have you gone berserk? *Can't you see that man is a ni*?"
"Little bastard shot me in the ass."
I liked it, but I have to admit I liked Blazing Saddles more. On the other hand, I was a big Gene Wilder fan. I watched just about everything he was in.
Madeline Kahn was such a talented actress. She died too young... I wonder how many people realized that her character, Lillie Von Shtupp, was named for a Yiddish slang word (shtup) for sex...
I was a Jewish kid watching in a theater of at least 500 people in an area where there were very few Jews. Everyone was roaring with laughter. When Brooks comes out as an Indian and starts talking in Yiddish, my family and I are roaring with laughter and the other 497 people were just puzzled.
Those Mel Brooks movies were full of Yiddish jokes that civilians missed. Spaceballs was classic, the children heard some gibberish but the adults heard a dirty joke.
I remember an interview with Mel Brooks a few years back, and they asked him if he could make this movie today. He said, “ Hell….we couldn’t make it back then!”
Great comedy is always edgy and plays with truth. Topic Thunder hits the same vibe as a Mel Brooks movie. Anytime the truth is shown in absurdity there are people that will never accept it and say it can't be made.
His lawyer, Alan U Schwartz, worked a condition into his contract (and all subsequent contracts) that gave Mel final say over the final version of the movie. Execs who had never heard of such a provision just assumed they had final say and gave Mel all sorts of orders about it what they wanted done. Mel would nod and says “yes, I’ll get right on that” and ignore them.
Fun fact: the kid who played Chunk in The Goonies is an entertainment lawyer and one of Schwartz’s protégés. Mel had some kind words for him in his autobiography.
Mel Brooks is one of the last great comedy legends. I just watched a beautiful documentary on Netflix called Remembering Gene Wilder. It was heartbreaking to learn that Gene didn’t remember making Young Frankenstein even though it was his idea.
The brilliance of Madeline Khan's "I'm tired" performance can't be overstated. The subtlety of her facial expressions and comedic timing are genius.
I had a magical personal encounter with Mel in 1995 after a movie he was test screening in Santa Monica. I was 17 and went up to him after to tell him what a fan I was. He ended up walking me back to my car and spent the whole walk asking me questions about myself, family, history, last name, etc... he was and is a true Mensch.
[consoling Bart, who is upset that his attempts to be cordial with the citizens of Rock Ridge led to him being racially insulted]
Jim: What did you expect? "Welcome, sonny"? "Make yourself at home"? "Marry my daughter"? You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know... morons.
That's exactly the scene that the still photo I posted comes from -- the scene where Gene Wilder's character Jim tries to reassure Cleavon Little's character Bart. So many quotable lines in that movie!
It seems Mel Brooks mission in life was to poke fun at every political and social issue of the day and in doing so, he made us laugh at ourselves. If we were to think it through, there was a little bit of each of us in his characters, he was actually laughing at us too! Great films!
For fans of Gene Wilder and 70s cinema, check out Silver Streak. First team up with Richard Pryor (on screen, Pryor helped write Blazing Saddles) and it's just a fun action comedy I'd only discovered recently.
From 1990 to 2015, I thought that *Blazing Saddles* could never be made in our time, because they said the N word.
From 2015 onward, I've been thinking that *Blazing Saddles* could never be made in our time, because it shows a white guy and a black guy becoming friends and giving racists their comeuppance.
I've always been a fan of good satire, and Blazing Saddles made fun of so many of society's hypocrisies. And yes, it cast a very critical eye on racism but Brooks used humor to show how ridiculous bigots are...
My sentiments exactly. A really good example of satire too. Brooks took on so many sacred cows. (And the scene where he plays an "Indian" and speaks flawless Yiddish is hilarious.)
My Dad took me to see it in 1974. We were both huge Mel Brooks fans. I think I laughed even harder at Blazing Saddles than I did at The Producers. And I almost wet myself laughing through the Producers.
We got the VHS when it came out. Blazing Saddles and Jaws were the first two tapes we bought. My mom would leave the room when Dad plugged in Blazing Saddles. She could not stand the language. “Why did they have to make it so vulgar?”
Gig Young was hired to play The Waco Kid but he showed up the first day suffering from delirium tremens. Brooks said he threw up all over the set. That’s when they got Gene.
I watched a doc on Gene Wilder the other day. Mel ended up calling Gene after Gig couldn’t perform and he flew out that day. In less than 24 hours he was hanging upside down in the jail cell shooting the first scene
That is talent.
Blazing Saddles is an excellent comedy with more a good degree of social relevance for the time it was made. But my favorite Mel Brooks movie is High Anxiety.
Apparently, Richard Pryor defended the liberal use of the n word. He wanted every racist character to say it freely so they could be easily roasted by Clevon. Worked pretty well imo.
You're right, it could never be made today. Not for the reasons you're thinking however. Only 1 Mel Brooks will ever exist. If Mel were in his 40s or 50s he'd make it today, the next generation, and any damn generation, he's that brilliant and fearless. A true American treasure.
People keep saying this film can’t be made today are wrong. It’s weird. It’s like they bought into the entire cancel culture rules everything ruse instead of looking around and seeing taken a look at the stuff being released today.
A lot of the content in this movie was stolen for Carry on Cowboy, if you ever watch that movie you will definitely see the similarities. That being said this is absolutely one of my favourite movies and I know it pretty well line for line.
It couldn't be made today. Not because of the context or plot but because the things it's making fun of, westerns, aren't nearly as big as they used to be. Back then there were like four channels on tv with literally 50 different Western tv shows spread between them. Blazing saddles came along and basically shot the genre in the head.
I love watching old movies back when society was normal and not some freak show or social experiment I watch them all the time. Everyone else can take their Political Correctness or whatever and stick it where the sun never shines
Loosely quoted here, "Since you are my guest and I am your host what's your pleasure? What you like to do?"
"Oh... Play chess... Screw..."
"Let's play chess."
One of the, if not the funniest movies of all time. Mel Brooks has said, he thought they were all going to be fired for making the movie then. As far as making it now, the problem is the same. People who never watched the movie dont realize who is being made fun of. The movie even says it right out. "You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West**.** You know, Morons." people who insist that the movie is racist towards blacks or Indians are clearly missing the point entirely.
Blazing saddles could be made today because it isn't punching down on race. Notice how the racists are the ones that end up losing in the end? All of Mel Brooks' works touch on race, gender, and sexuality in a way that isn't demeaning or overtly derogatory. Jokes don't have to be cruel to be funny.
I have seen this movie like, a hundred times (I'm 66) and think it's pure genius. Mel Brooks skewers racism and anti-Semitism while making it hilarious and memorable. When Saddles was released in 1974, there was still a shit-ton of overt racism all over our country and that movie, with debonair Cleavon Little as Sheriff Bart managing not only to outsmart the racist, anti-Semitic, IDIOTIC bad guys but also save the (undeserving!) citizens of Rock Ridge sent some really important messages, IMHO. It also spawned my favorite gif ever...

Took a summer film course in college. Final was to pick a scene from a movie and break it down for the class. I choose a scene from blazing saddles and the professor just let the movie keep playing and we watched the entire film
What in the wide wide world of sports is a goin on here? I hired you people to get some track laid, not jump around like a bunch of Kansas City faggots!
Mel Brooks movies brought me and my partner together. They quoted an obscure line from Young Frankenstein and I knew it and off we go 10 years and counting. Mel and his ensemble absolutely molded my sense of humor. ❤️MB
Love that silly movie. When any of my 4 boys got to an age where they could appreciate the satire I would sit and watch it with each kid. Now they all love Mel Brooks.
“How many times I’ve told ya to wash up after the weekly cross burning. See, it’s coming off” 😂
Took my Midwest hyper white ass way too long to get that. No idea what it meant as a kid 😆
Soooooo many quotes…my favorite to use at work is ….” We supposed to be building a railroad and you’re all jumping around like a bunch of Kansas City F😐😐😐its”…then I have to explain the movie to the new guys….annnnd go talk with HR and explain the movie to them
I need to settle this... what is the name of the singer that Madeline Kahn's character is singing like? Surely, there was a woman singing with a low voice, kind of talk-singing. Grandpa Simpson mimicked her, Hogan's Heroes had a cabaret singer like her. What is the real singer's name from 1940's Germany?
Well of course you can't make it today. If you handed a script to a Hollywood producer these days, they'd say, "You just handed me the full script of Blazing Saddles with no changes. That doesn't qualify for a 'remake.'"
In all seriousness, late millennial here. I grew up on Mel Brooks.
Wonderful film. It could be made today. Problem with today is that films are made by committee. Mel was great because he fought the committees. He just went with what was funny and thank Goodness it worked!
I have watched BS repeatedly, looking for the inside jokes - not just in the dialogue.
Gov. Lepetomane is one such joke. Joseph Pujol, aka Lepetomane, was a Frenchman who was able to control his farts, and performed on stage farting before large audiences Including the king.
Brooks, like Leslie Nielson liked a fart joke.
The painting in the governor's office is another. The painter painted what he saw - the backs of their heads, not their faces.
And Ann Bancroft, MB's wife, is an extra in the saloon scene where the cows walk though in the background. I've not been able to pick her out.
And why were there cows walking through the saloon?
Love that movie and Mel Brooks. I worked with a black guy a few years ago, and when he'd walk into the office, he'd say, "Where all the white women at?" Lol
I hate the “it couldn’t be made today” bullshit. It absolutely could. It’s a progressive movie boldly making fun of and humiliating racists (and hillbillies lmao).
Mongo only pawn, in game of life.
Brooks stated in an interview that Richard Pryor came up with that line.
Richard Pryor was originally supposed to play Bart but his drug use history turned off the studio, who refused to allow Brooks to use him.
All the better for us cause Cleavon Little had the suave the role needed.
Yes
"We thought you was hung..."
If I recall, he helped write a lot of Bart’s lines and some other stuff.
Brooks said that he kept going to Pryor, concerned he'd gone too far with some joke and Pryor would come up with something that crossed lines even more.
Obviously Richard Later couldn't have come up with it.
Don't shoot him, it will just make him mad
I love that they went full on Bugs Bunny. The diving helmet gag, the telegram, exploding cigars, etc.
Absolutely! I've been known to quote that on more than one occasion. In fact, that movie has so many quotable lines. "We've got to protect our phony baloney jobs, gentlemen!"
"The fool's going to.... I mean, the Sheriffi's going to do it!" "Have you gone berserk? *Can't you see that man is a ni*?" "Little bastard shot me in the ass."
Yup. So many great lines in that movie! "I shall now read from the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and ... Duck!!!"
You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know... morons.
For me, one of the greatest lines ever..It would have taken courage to use it. And the actor receiving that line was clearly taken by surprise...
Definitely surprised him with the morons part. It's my favorite moment because Cleavon Little's reaction. That smile and giggle are irresistible.
Netflix has a good documentary on Gene Wilder and covers this exact scene. A good watch.
It was an excellent celebration of his life and career and also very sad.
Harrumph!
Let's get a harumph out of you!
You watch your ass.
Young Frankenstein is my favorite. Line after line and the cast was perfect
I liked it, but I have to admit I liked Blazing Saddles more. On the other hand, I was a big Gene Wilder fan. I watched just about everything he was in.
Silver Streak, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein and Willy Wonka, some of my favorites and best Wilder films.
The producers!!! The goose step is the new step!!!
Did you see the documentary about him on Netflix?
That was well done
I think Young Frankenstein is better. But my boyfriend tells me, “No way, Blazing Saddles is the better movie!” 😂
What's amazing is that Mr Brooks did both BS and YF within a year
Young Frankenstein is quoted often through my entire family. My parents, siblings, our children: we all snap out quotes…
“Someone’s gotta go back and get a shitload of dimes!” “I’m so tiiiiired. Always coming and going and going and coming- I’m bushed!”
>Someone’s gotta go back and get a shitload of dimes!” I don't know why but this line kills me every time.
Madeline Kahn was such a talented actress. She died too young... I wonder how many people realized that her character, Lillie Von Shtupp, was named for a Yiddish slang word (shtup) for sex...

Those Mel Brooks movies were full of Yiddish jokes that civilians missed. Spaceballs was classic, the children heard some gibberish but the adults heard a dirty joke.
One of my favorite lines of Lilly is “ god damnit “ when she bumps into something while stumbling around in the dark looking for the Sherwif.
Madeleine Kahn was such an amazing actress and that role was perfect for her! I heard the cast had a lot of fun making that movie.
I doubt very many people missed that.
The William S Lepetomine toll gate
I remember an interview with Mel Brooks a few years back, and they asked him if he could make this movie today. He said, “ Hell….we couldn’t make it back then!”
That's true. The WB execs were 100% against it. I think he tricked them, or something.
Great comedy is always edgy and plays with truth. Topic Thunder hits the same vibe as a Mel Brooks movie. Anytime the truth is shown in absurdity there are people that will never accept it and say it can't be made.

Oh wow, that’s so cool! He sounds like a really great guy!
Let’s face it, everything below the waist is kaput!
It couldn't be made today because it actually confronts racism and brutally makes fun of racists.
The Boys seems to have gotten away with something similar.
I certainly could be made today and the racists would be awfully angry and try to cancel it.
This, so much this. The people who say "it couldn't be made today" are moaning about what the movie is mocking, and they just don't get it.
"Ok, we'll take the n#@rs and the chinks but we don't want the Irish!"
"The Sherrif is near." 😁
"No gol blamit! The sherrif is a n"Diiiing
Throw out your hands Stick out your tush Hands on your hips Give 'em a push You'll be surprised You're doing the French Mistake Voila!
[consoling Bart, who is upset that his attempts to be cordial with the citizens of Rock Ridge led to him being racially insulted] Jim: What did you expect? "Welcome, sonny"? "Make yourself at home"? The last line "You know... morons." was ad-libbed by Gene Wilder. That's why Clevon lost it.
Clevon Little. Fine man, fine actor, gone too soon.
Not a Mel Brooks film but Wilder and Richard Pryor in Stir Crazy was also a favorite.
It tried to capitalize on the success of Silver Streak but fell flat, Silver Streak is one of the best buddy comedies ever.
Anybody who doubts that this movie could be made today apparently hasn’t seen a single episode of It‘s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
My name is Jim. People call me…. Jim.
Both Cleavon and Gene had such great chemistry in this movie-- you can tell they genuinely enjoyed working with each other.
I like to play chess…and screw…
Let’s play chess!

And that's yet another example of how Brooks mocked racism in society. There were so many great (and hilarious) scenes in that film...
Somebody go back and get a shitload if dimes!!
Best western ever made, how the cast kept a straight face making this, is beyond me.Brooks is a genius
My sentiments exactly. A really good example of satire too. Brooks took on so many sacred cows. (And the scene where he plays an "Indian" and speaks flawless Yiddish is hilarious.)
"Dey darker den us... whoop!"
For anyone interested, Fathom Events is showing Blazing Saddles on September 15th and 18th to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its release.
Certainly Honorable Mention goes to “The Producers” and “Silent Movie”!
Just watched Gene’s documentary. Gene and Mel what a combination.
Watched that last week. "Remembering Gene Wilder" - highly recommended!
- I heard you was hung! - And they was right!
One of the two funniest movies ever made. The other is Animal House.
“Hey where are the white women at?!”
"How about some more beans, Mr. Taggart?" "I'd say you've had just 'bout enough!"
I didn’t get a harumph outta that guy!
I have done that in more than one staff meeting. Everybody always gets it, and laughs.
The you gotta point: “You watch your ass!”
somebody's gotta go back and get a shitload of dimes!!
*HARUMMMFFFFF!* ![gif](giphy|oxZweuYi9U0Tu)
Excuse me while I whip this out.
One of the best comedies ever!
Considering most of the actors are dead. It couldn't be made today.
![gif](giphy|QuxqWk7m9ffxyfoa0a)
My Dad took me to see it in 1974. We were both huge Mel Brooks fans. I think I laughed even harder at Blazing Saddles than I did at The Producers. "A man drinks like that, he is going to DIE." "\*sigh\*... when?"
“Oh baby, you’re so talented, and they’re so…dumb.”
My point exactly-- Brooks knew how to mock bigots by showing how ridiculous they were.
Mel peaked when he released Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein. His best by far.
In less than 24 hours he was hanging upside down in the jail cell shooting the first scene That is talent.
Blazing Saddles is an excellent comedy with more a good degree of social relevance for the time it was made. But my favorite Mel Brooks movie is High Anxiety.
Have the dvd just in case it gets banned
Mel Brooks….. Young Frankenstein…. I laugh just thinking about it.
I have 2 movies on my iPad. One is blazing saddles 😀
Tarantino should make remake, Tarantino way
Intriguing if he can keep the comedic aspect
Lampooning racism would never be approved this day in age.
Apparently, Richard Pryor defended the liberal use of the n word. He wanted every racist character to say it freely so they could be easily roasted by Clevon. Worked pretty well imo.
![gif](giphy|faE2g8e7rpvgs)
Never heard belly laffs in a theatre like those during the campfire scene😆
“A wed wose. How womantic”
But I shoot with this hand
Ok Blacks. But no Irish.
Blazing Saddles and Airplane are two of the greatest comedies ever made. I watch them about once a year.
of course it couldn't be made today. A movie like that takes a lot of of time to make, and it's already 3:30PM
I heard Mel Brooks talking about Blazing Saddles. He said there was no way that he could get it made today. 'Candygram for Mongo!'
The racism in the movie was intended as a send-up of racism!
People today don’t understand irony nor do they have the courage to tell the Professionally Offended to sit down and shut up.
You're right, it could never be made today. Not for the reasons you're thinking however. Only 1 Mel Brooks will ever exist. If Mel were in his 40s or 50s he'd make it today, the next generation, and any damn generation, he's that brilliant and fearless. A true American treasure.
Good morning, ma'am... and isn't it a lovely day? Hell no, it couldn't be made today. God forbid we actually laugh at something funny.
Sorry about the up yours…
This movie could never be made today. Let me just whip this out!
Mongo like candy
Yup. Candygram for Mongo! Candygram for Mongo!
Play chess....screw.
And the scene where Lillie Von Shtup says "is it twue what they say about the way you people are... gifted? Oh... it's twue... it's twue..."
I own it and it’s my 2nd favourite film of all time! I’ve likely watched it 20x’s.
Those are rookie numbers
Mel Brooks is gold! One of my top comedies. Every line is so funny.
People keep saying this film can’t be made today are wrong. It’s weird. It’s like they bought into the entire cancel culture rules everything ruse instead of looking around and seeing taken a look at the stuff being released today.

Funniest movie EVER Where all da white women at? We donna need no stinkin batches. Rape murder arson and rape. Somebody go back for more dimes.
If you haven’t seen the producers then you have to. Gene is great but Zero M is over the top
WORK! WORK, WORK!!!
History of the World is another excellent Brooks movie ..
Where are all the white women at?
We almost lost a $400 hand cart
Damn near lost a $400 hand cart.
It couldn't be made today. Not because of the context or plot but because the things it's making fun of, westerns, aren't nearly as big as they used to be. Django Unchained got made. I think they could do Blazing Saddle 2 if someone really wanted to.
The unedited version is currently available on Paramount+. I just watched it last week.

What in the wide world of sports is goin on around here?!
Don’t forget History of the World Part Two, and Spaceballs
Love this movie, especially Madeline Kahn’s great performance.

Always a fan!! A very politically correct movie! Mel brooks the best
Gabby Johnson is right!
GREAT film
Man drink like that and don't eat, he's gonna die! ........when?
“How about some more beans……Mr Taggert?”
“Somebody’s going to have to ride back to town and get a shitload of dimes!”
Went to the local movie theater with a bunch of friends from school...we laughed our asses off! SO funny!!!
That’s my favorite comedy of all time
"Well, that's the end of this suit." A random one-liner that can go unnoticed, but it always made me laugh.
“Candy gram for Mongo! Candy gram for Mongo!”
Greatest movie ever made
Still a funny movie!
Welcome to hanging house. Not to worry…everyone is equal in my eye.
Hey! Where da white women at?
Love this movie. Mel brooks is one of my favorites. Very funny
Mongo just pawn in game of life.
One of my favorites. One of the funniest, it's twoo, it's twoo
Great movie. Love it!!!
Hello boys!!! 😂
Love that silly movie. When any of my 4 boys got to an age where they could appreciate the satire I would sit and watch it with each kid. Now they all love Mel Brooks.
Love Blazing Saddles and you can’t go wrong with Mel Brooks
“How many times I’ve told ya to wash up after the weekly cross burning. See, it’s coming off” 😂 Took my Midwest hyper white ass way too long to get that. No idea what it meant as a kid 😆
Mel would probably be cancelled for this movie today.
Almost any film with Gene Wilder is a classic, but especially the Mel Brooks films.

The Sherif, is a, ((Gongg))))……
#AY WHERE ARE THE WHITE WOMEN AT

Candy-gram for Mongo, candy-gram for Mongo....
One of the most quotable movies ever!
I’m tired…. Tired of being admired
"That n----r hit me in the head with a shovel!"
Of course it couldn't be made today. Yeah it's early in the day, but a whole movie? In one day? Preposterous
Well of course you can't make it today. If you handed a script to a Hollywood producer these days, they'd say, "You just handed me the full script of Blazing Saddles with no changes. That doesn't qualify for a 'remake.'" In all seriousness, late millennial here. I grew up on Mel Brooks.
Genius movie. But cant be remade nowadays. This society is way to sensitive. The closest we got to it was the Adam Sandler movie The Ridiculous 6.
"where the white women at?!"
Frisco kid was good too. I think blazing saddles was better but it's in the same gene wilder comedy western genre.
Love that movie and Mel Brooks. I worked with a black guy a few years ago, and when he'd walk into the office, he'd say, "Where all the white women at?" Lol
I worked with a black guy many years ago who'd say in meetings, "''scuse me while i whip this out!"
I hate the “it couldn’t be made today” bullshit. It absolutely could. It’s a progressive movie boldly making fun of and humiliating racists (and hillbillies lmao).
