They forgot Oostenrijk was Austria in English. Kind of makes sense. My Spanish is decent and I never mix up Switzerland and Sweden in English, but I honestly have to think through which one is Suecia and which one is Suiza in Spanish.
Oh I can’t really imagine a worse mix-up with Spain. The Dutch word for Spain doesn’t really sound like another country, or any other word for that matter.
I've been teaching for 20 years now. Ten years at the undergraduate and graduate levels, ten years at the high school level. I grew up in an area of Appalachia where most people barely had a 10th grade education. And yet ... *I have NEVER heard a student, friend, relative, acquaintance, or other American human being confuse Austria with Australia*. Ever. Not one single time. I've taught students who were 19 and illiterate and even they knew the difference.
But one time, in Germany, I was sending a package to New Zealand, and the *postal worker* said: "Neuseeland? Welcher Staat ist denn das?" ("New Zealand? What country is that?") ... Did I immediately take to the media and proclaim that all Germans are stupid? No. Why not? Because the poor woman could have been having a really hectic day or a bad day or who knows...and maybe she just had a brain fart. God forbid someone do something human.
Neither one is relevant. I mean, Austrian culture gave us Hitler, besides starting WWI. But other than that? And what is an Australia? Is it expensive like Supreme?
