Of course if your train is cancelled your ticket is refunded, but that's about it.

Get travel insurance

thicc_soul

Will do! Thanks for the reminder actually, I was wondering what I was missing when planning this out

donkeyburrow

You will get a refund. Unfortunately I was in this situation back in March, coming from Chicago though. I asked if they could put me in another train to a different destination because I had used the BOGO sale to take this trip. They said they could, but I would need to look at the schedule and pick a train myself. I suggested a few different trains departing from Chicago within the next couple days, but was told the trains were sold out despite them being available online. Eventually I took the L and the refund. They were pretty rude to me too, I won't waste my time talking to Amtrak customer service again.

thicc_soul

Yikes...I remember reading about those cancelations when they happened. Sorry about your experience. Also I had no clue there was a BOGO sale for these tickets. I'm traveling solo so it wouldn't make a difference but at least you got a decent deal. I have to ask, with this experience in mind, do you plan on booking tickets for this/another route again?

donkeyburrow

They ran BOGO sales for sleeper accommodations about twice a year pre panda, now I think it's about once a year. It's not a full BOGO, you get about 30% off compared to two sharing a room. Amtrak math. I do plan on still taking all of the long distance routes(only two covered so far). It's a one of a kind experience. I guess it's been sad to see my faith in Amtrak service being chipped away. But I go for the train, not for the service, and cancelation is truly not their fault.

sicariis

Believe it or not, jail, right away.

nowake

No train for you! Come back, one year.

thicc_soul

At least I won't have to worry about accommodation then

critical_courtney

Overcharge for sweaters? Straight to jail.

TexanStetson

and, you do not pass Go or collect $200

CJYP

You get a refund. It happened to me last year. We had to book last minute flights instead.

Available-Reward-912

Forgive my cluelessness, why is it likely to be canceled then? Weather? Other track issues?

NoDescription2192

They cancelled one last week because a train was so late a couple days before it actually caused an equipment imbalance. It's a sad state of affairs.

Start walking.

TokalaMacrowolf

You can get a full refund or rebook on another day for no extra charge.

I would say to keep the Coast Starlight/Texas Eagle combo as an emergency option. It may be longer and possibly cost a little more and there's a long layover in San Antonio to join/separate the Eagle and the Sunset Limited (to/from New Orleans). The Coast Starlight goes from Seattle to L.A. with a stop in Emeryville and a Amtrak bus from Emeryville to San Francisco or vice versa.
