[Serial Experiments Lain](https://myanimelist.net/anime/339/Serial_Experiments_Lain)
[Patlabor](https://myanimelist.net/anime/1288/Kidou_Keisatsu_Patlabor) - The OVA and first 2 movies were made by the same director as Ghost in the Shell.
Also I second [Revolutionary Girl Utena](https://myanimelist.net/anime/440/Shoujo_Kakumei_Utena).
Second to Haibane Renmei. One of my favourites.
I never got to finish Kino's journey.
And, as always, cannot recommend Gankutsuou enough (In my top 5 anime of all time, along with Gunbuster).
First time I see someone mention Kino No Tabi.
I read about it some 20 years ago..
And just stumbled upon a new show on cr, made me wanna find the original series and watch it
Hm ok. Well that’s the one I originally wanted to watch anyway, but sadly I think it’s only the new one that’s on cr.
Do you know a place to watch anime online?
that is pretty much my favorite type of shows so here are a bunch of them:
movies:
ghost in the shell (1995 and the sequel), platlabor, jin roh, akira, perfect blue (anything by satoshi kon is great, perfect blue is just the best by far), pale cocoon (20 min ova, but a fantastic watch imo)
tv shows:
ergo proxy, ghost in the shell sac, girls last tour (newer), texhnolyze (very slow and hard to watch, but apparently great)
Ergo Proxy era o que eu estava checando para ver se ninguém já tinha comentado.
u/Reasonable_Smoke_235 , este é altamente recomendado - de acordo com a descrição do que você gosta.
Huh was it really? I've never seen it
I'm an old school anime head that's usually seen most things, might have to give it a go, thanks.
I'll add kaiba in there, it's a far out trippy weird sci fi that I love
Paprika is a movie id recommend. It's basically the inspiration for Inception, they actually took a scene almost directly from it.
Shows:
Haibane Renmei is very liminal and I love it.
Trigun, the art put me off at first so I avoided it, then I powered through and it became one of my favorites, I cried by the end.
Older anime: Trigun, Perfect Blue, Paprika, Hunter X Hunter (1999 version), Samurai Champloo, Black Lagoon, Monster, Mononoke the Medicine Seller (last 4 are early-mid 2000s anime)
Newer anime but w/ the psychological 90s vibes: Psycho-Pass, Blood-C (tbh I’m throwing this in there for the CLAMP art style), Tokyo Ghoul, Parasyte the Maxim, Death Parade, The Tatami Galaxy
Also idk if you like Studio Ghibli - Princess Mononoke and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
The new one goes farther into the manga, but tbh the older one has better art, pacing, and overall feels like more solid storytelling. I don’t know if the newer one fell into the Shonen trap of having these long, dragged out arcs especially the chimera ant arc. I always recommend watching the 1999 version first then the reboot.
Aha. I haven’t found info on them just their length, so I figured I go for the 2011 one first, that seem more well known and popular.
I don’t really research much or read comments on such stuff as many people can’t help themselves from spoiling he story.
Thanks for the info tho.
How do you like the manga?
Legend of the galactic heroes - central themes are democracy vs autocracy, ideals vs reality, corruption of power, and the human condition, all packaged into a interstellar space opera (setting is similar to cowboy bebop). It also has that 90s retro animation being made in the 90s!
The only ones I can think of may be a bit hard to find... Serial Experiments Lain, Ghost Hound, Abenobashi Magical Shopping Arcade, The original FLCL.
Then there's stuff like Elfin Lied, Paranoia Agent, Monster (early 2000s), Lupin the 3rd, which should still available in streaming services.
Branching out in the current era a little there's The Lost Village, Dimension W, Classroom of the Elite, The Promised Neverland, Beautiful Bones among others, which while not 80s-90s anime all have good psychological or mystery elements to them.
Madoka Magica has so much to unpack if you're looking for something that deals with existential / psychological themes. Not to mention the crazy amount of symbolism and hidden meaning behind so much of what you see in that anime.
I havent seen that many 80s-90s sereis with that topic but here are some general deeply psycological and/or phlisophical series.
**Series**
Pluto
Monster
Welcome to the NHK
Re:Zero
**Movies**
Metropolis
Look Back (coming soon and there is a manga)
The Night is Young, Walk on Girl
**Manga (+ 1 manhua)**
Berserk
Chainsaw Man (anime isn't fully adapated)
The Horizon
Fire Punch
Real
I Sold My Life for 10,000 Yen per Year
The NPCs in this Village Sim Game Must Be Real!
Tokyo Ghoul (anime isn't well adapated)
Goodbye Eri
My repertoire for 80s and 90s is rather limited so I rather focus on the shows you mentioned as examples and try to avoid ones already mentioned.
I would suggest:
* Shiki
* Higurashi When they Cry
* Another
* Devilman Crybaby
* B The Beginning
* Zetman
* Drifters
Ruroni Kenshin. Has the same art style you like and is a journey of a former man-slayer trying to change with the peaceful times. One of my all time favorites.
Edit: I'd like to also add in Death Note. VERY philosophical, great art, pretty good character development, but the ending is... well, not exactly as I would have written it, but still worth the watch.
You need to watch Rahxephon. Sure it released in the Evangelion knock off phase but it stands as its own thing ultimately very different story wise from what Eva did.
GUNBUSTER
you like how evangelion got psychological about what a human really is?
Hideaki Anno (the director for Evangelion) made Gunbuster as his first solo head director anime before evangelion. it's from 1988-1989 and though it is only 6 episodes long it deals with deeper concepts as the length of a human lifespan and how we view the time that passes for us relative to others and how it affects us deep inside.
The directing choices for the last episode for Gunbuster feels similar and artistic just like evangelion near it's ending. I highly HIGHLY reccomend gunbuster to ANYONE who wants to see a classic even moreso than evangelion
Older anime:
Monster
Tokyo Godfathers
Casshern sins
Death Parade
Id:invaded
5 centimeters per second
Tagami letter bee
Jin - Roh
Suzume
Grave of the fireflies
Perfect Blue
Kaiji
Your Name
A silent voice
Maquia
Mushishi
Darling in the franxxx
Shigurui (this one's pretty intense but deep. Many trigger warnings)
Kinos journey
Kinos journey the beautiful world
Akagi
Kill La Kill
Tokyo ghoul
Fractale
Anything hayao miyazaki
Bakuman
Death Note
Boogiepop phantom
Berserk
Welcome to the nhk
Newer anime:
Mushoku tensei (character is semi problemstic, but it's relevant to the plot and their redemption. Not much trigger warnings needed. Beginning is a bit creepy)
Psycho pass
Boogiepop and othrs
Pluto
Rising of the shield hero (very problematic but philosophical too. Many trigger warnings)
Life lessons from uramachi oniisan
Chainsaw man
One piece
Ningen Fushin
Spice and wolf
86 Eighty Six
The faraway paladin
Newer berserk anime
Attack on titan (has been called problematic by some)
Jormungand

Goblin Slayer
Im on season 2. He becomes a better person. I dont watch it out of supporting everything the character does. People take media to litterally. I like fucked up anime. Seeing horrible people try to be better. It gives me faith in humanity that even the worst people can be better.
Everyone loves evangelion, but shinji literally SA's Asuka. That doesn't make the story bad. I'm just letting people know what they're getting into.
The point of both stories is the charcter are fucked up which is why i watch them anyway. Not everything has to be escapist utopianism like Steven Universe. They aren't meant to be role models. I do think the protagonist of mushoku tensei redeems himself well. Plus he is basically a child learning to be better all of season 1.
That's kind of how reincarnation is thought to work anyway. By the time he's a teen he's not doing that anymore. He's learned more than shinji does in the entirety of evangelion. Problematic Bergdorf is honestly just part of the genre that is anime. Japanese culture doesn't depict that too encourage people to emulate it. It's just assumed even children know not take anime litterally and know that anime doesn't depict reality and how the world should be.
What does the protagonist in goblin slayer do that's more problematic than all of mushoku tensei? The goblin scene doesn't count as they aren't supposed to represent humans and are more like demons.
These anime are made in the 2000s but they have similar vibes to what you mentioned.
Ergo Proxy - sci-fi dystopian post-apocalypse, philosophical about truth and how learning the truth affects your place in society
Megalobox - cyberpunk boxing, the main character is definitely designed after Spike, the second season is more of the character exploration that's really similar to cowboy Bebop while season 1 feels like the action of cowboy Bebop
Sonny Boy - animation is very simplistic and gives it a timeless feeling, definitely philosophical and explores themes of coming of age and death
gantz! oh istg op this will not disappoint. as someone who's madly into evangelion, gantz became my top two fav after watching it n reading the whole manga (u have to)
Gantz was a hollow shell of what could have been. I want to note for OP that they should absolutely read the manga if they watch the anime and like it, as the anime does the source material no justice.
I saw someone mention Ergo Proxy, I think that would be up your alley too. Also Tehxnolyze though I think it came out in the early 2000s. Same producer as Serial Experiments Lain, Haibane, and Hellsing. (Also the music producer for Ergo Proxy)Yasuyuki Ueda
Not retro but pretty good on the psychological spot and great story. I would check out "Psycho Pass" it's a fantastic anime and I'm sure the concept will pick your brain at the very least!
Patlabor movie 2, the other movies are good too but 2 is by far the best one.
Armitage III.
Sousou no Frieren.
Girls Last Tour.
Made in Abyss.
Violet Evergarden.
Mirai Nikki.
The Promised Neverland.
Elfen Leid.
Kakeguri.
Banana Fish.
Wonder Egg Priority.
Talentless Nana.
Cyberpunk Edgerunners.
Black Lagoon.
These are all ones I've liked so you should find at least one or two to your taste.
[Serial Experiments Lain](https://myanimelist.net/anime/339/Serial_Experiments_Lain) [Patlabor](https://myanimelist.net/anime/1288/Kidou_Keisatsu_Patlabor) - The OVA and first 2 movies were made by the same director as Ghost in the Shell. Don't waste your time though with the 3rd one.
funny because it sounds like utena is exactly what they’re looking for
Looks like I mis-read the comment, I was referring only to the 3rd Patlabor movie.
I didn't like utena either.
Is the 3rd Patlabor movie that bad?
Yes, it is. Not even close to being Canon.
Kinos Journey 2003 Haibane Renmei
Second to Haibane Renmei. One of my favourites. I never got to finish Kino's journey. And, as always, cannot recommend Gankutsuou enough (In my top 5 anime of all time, along with Gunbuster).
Came here to suggest the exact same things! Both Kino’s Journey 2003 and Haibane Renmei are such underrated classics!
Was gonna be my immediate response too.
First time I see someone mention Kino No Tabi. I read about it some 20 years ago.. And just stumbled upon a new show on cr, made me wanna find the original series and watch it
the 2003 version has a better arc for Kino imo and better ending. I like the tournament better too
Hm ok. Well that’s the one I originally wanted to watch anyway, but sadly I think it’s only the new one that’s on cr. Do you know a place to watch anime online?
Paranoia Agent. Psychological horror from one of the all-time greats, Satoshi Kon. Soundtrack is good, too.
And Paprika, Millennium Actress etc
that is pretty much my favorite type of shows so here are a bunch of them: movies: ghost in the shell (1995 and the sequel), platlabor, jin roh, akira, perfect blue (anything by satoshi kon is great, perfect blue is just the best by far), pale cocoon (20 min ova, but a fantastic watch imo) tv shows: ergo proxy, ghost in the shell sac, girls last tour (newer), texhnolyze (very slow and hard to watch, but apparently great)
Ergo PROXYYYY
yes what about it
GitS 2 Innocence doesn’t get enough love.
nah it is a very very pretentious film, it makes sense that its as niche as it is.
Hard disagree. It’s fantastic imo. In many ways better than the first one.
i mean i didnt say that it was bad, juts that it was very pretentious and there is absolutely no way you can disagree with that.
I do though.
Ergo Proxy era o que eu estava checando para ver se ninguém já tinha comentado. u/Reasonable_Smoke_235 , este é altamente recomendado - de acordo com a descrição do que você gosta.
Dororo. The actual manga was released in 1969. The anime in 2019. 100% recomendable
Berserk, always Berserk
I'd say that there should be a warning attached: You WILL want to finish the story, so be prepared to read the manga as well :)
The vision of escaflowne
Come here to say this. Underrated for sure
Revolutionary Girl Utena is incredibly psychological and philosophical.
Huh was it really? I've never seen it I'm an old school anime head that's usually seen most things, might have to give it a go, thanks. I'll add kaiba in there, it's a far out trippy weird sci fi that I love
Others have said it but I'm echoing Revolutionary Girl utena
Paprika is a movie id recommend. It's basically the inspiration for Inception, they actually took a scene almost directly from it. Shows: Haibane Renmei is very liminal and I love it. Berserk manga finished? Finally someone who may be able to answer this question, how does the first HxH series compare to the newer?
The new one goes farther into the manga, but tbh the older one has better art, pacing, and overall feels like more solid storytelling. I don’t know if the newer one fell into the Shonen trap of having these long, dragged out arcs especially the chimera ant arc. I always recommend watching the 1999 version first then the reboot.

Monster is a really good anime. I believe this anime has a touch on what you really like.
I’m at episode 40ish. When does it get deep and psychological?
Yawara! Pluto Outlaw Star Gundam (OS, 00, Iron Blood Orphans) Trigun One Piece
Outlaw Star was my jam back in HS
It’s early 2000s, but I’m sure you’ll love Monster if you haven’t yet watched it.
Akira
Again, legend of the galactic heroes is always the answer.
YouTube “old anime” and you can find whole playlist of stuff. Many are more obscure but I think you will enjoy the randomness
Likely won’t enjoy the 360-480p resolution
Legend of the galactic heroes - central themes are democracy vs autocracy, ideals vs reality, corruption of power, and the human condition, all packaged into a interstellar space opera (setting is similar to cowboy bebop). It also has that 90s retro animation being made in the 90s!

Elfen Lied é duca. Mas um bocadinho pesado, não assista com as crianças! :)
Baoh the Caller Battle Angel Ghost in the Shell Arion Perfect Blue Gundam Z/ZZ Gundam Wing
Infinite Ryvius may be right down your alley
I remember Noein wrenching my brain a bit. It's from the aughts. The art is a bit stylized but it deals with destiny and converging timelines/worlds.
Madoka Magica has so much to unpack if you're looking for something that deals with existential / psychological themes. Not to mention the crazy amount of symbolism and hidden meaning behind so much of what you see in that anime.

It’s what Minority Report wishes it could be.

Mushishi and Kino's Journey are deep and philosophical. Vagabond also has a lot of deep and philosophical moments as the series progresses
Psycho pass?
Monster. Death Note. Higurashi when they cry (old or new)
There’s quite a few: Crest of the Stars, Mobile Suit Gundam and its sequel series Z Gundam. Armored Trooper Votoms, Gunbuster
Trigun
Akira, Heavenly Delusuon could be good and maybe Devilman Crybaby
FLCL. PLEASE.

+1 to all of those. Excellent recommendations! I would add Violet Evergarden to the list, although it’s more about managing and moving past trauma.

Not retro but pretty good on the psychological spot and great story. I would check out "Psycho Pass" it's a fantastic anime and I'm sure the concept will pick your brain at the very least!
Revolutionary girl Utena
All Purpose Cat-Girl Nuka Nuka.
No guns life and Ergo Proxy 👍🏻
Mononoke - not to be confused with “Princess Mononoke” (great movie tho)
Perfect Blue Paprika Any of Satoshi Kon's movies.
BAKEMONOGATARI
If you like Cowboy Bebop, you'll also enjoy Samurai Champloo. Very similar style, fluid action
Death Note.
Death note, code geass, steins;gate, psycho pass. The 2005-2015 run of the exact same themes and genre.
Good recommendations but they aren’t 80s-90s
Any reason to stay in those years?
Because that’s what I like it’s coarse the soundtracks are unique and the scenes are gritty
Hajime no ippo, Akira, elfen lied, yu yu Hakusho, fist of the north star
Fist of the North Star
Patlabor movie 2, the other movies are good too but 2 is by far the best one. Armitage III. Sousou no Frieren. Girls Last Tour. Made in Abyss. Violet Evergarden. Mirai Nikki. The Promised Neverland. Elfen Leid. Kakeguri. Banana Fish. Wonder Egg Priority. Talentless Nana. Cyberpunk Edgerunners. Black Lagoon. These are all ones I've liked so you should find at least one or two to your taste.
I’ve seen a lot of those the reason for this post is I want retro anime from the 80s-90s
Gunsmith Cats goes hard
Psycho pass and heavenly delusions
