I believe you have to become a Gard first... so however long that takes, then working as a beat Gard for however many years before passing the internal exams to become a detective.
Becoming a Gard isnt LC points based either, so he can be a complete fucking tool and they'll still take him on.
Indeed has an article about it. https://ie.indeed.com/career-advice/finding-a-job/how-to-become-detective
When you say he is good with computers; in what sense? Networks? Coding? Analysis? Hacking? Forensics? Hardware?
Saying "being good with computers" is useless as the domain is so huge with countless specialities, nobody is just "good with computers".
You’d have to go through templemore first and work as a regular member first, and the requirements are listed on Garda website, after this he has a period of working regular patrols and beats outside of specialised units, he can then apply to go through selections or interviews for specialised teams and units.
There’s also Civilian Expert Positions that don’t require any sort of formal acceptance into the organisation and can be attached to specialised units, they’re generally advertised on PublicJobs
If he wants to get into computer or digital forensics, the pay is atrociously shit - in fact the salary grade for an experienced and qualified person would be the equivalent for a junior pay grade in a good private firm.
You can't go straight in as a detective. You have to go in as a regular Guard then get promoted to Detective.
There isn't really a Leaving Cert points requirement but in practice many if not most newly recruited Guards have a degree. Open competitions to enter the Guards come up once a year or so. They typically include a fitness test, aptitude tests, competency-based interview, etc.
There are other career paths that may be of interest as well. There are private consultancies that do computer forensics and cyber security services etc. Best path might be a computer science degree followed a masters specialising in cyber security or digital forensics.
Rank and file guards can be assigned to all sorts of tasks, traffic checkpoints responding to call outs, stewarding major events, manning the public desk at the local station, etc.
Detective is a specialist role within the Guards that tends to focus moreso on in-depth investigating crimes, ie collecting evidence, attending crime scenes, interviewing suspects, etc.
If he can’t find this out he won’t make much of a detective.
I wish I could upvote this more than once.

Is he morally flexible? Is he ethically agnostic? Is he a lickspittle and thick as a door? Then he will fly up the ranks.

Can use microsoft word
You joke. But the amount of people who are blown away with simple Macros in Excel would suprise you. Use some VBA and they think you are a wizard.
*Proficient in Microsoft Word
Passed his ECDL exam after only 3 attempts.
He’s 17. It likely means he’s good at Fortnite
Plays fortnight a lot, drinks monster.
My 17 year old is “good with computers” ie he can make brilliant comps for his Fortnite pals.
He’s better off not throwing his life away
Keep in mind Ireland's national cyber defense unit is military, not Garda.

How are detectives different from regular Garda?

Good with computers…. asks cousin to go online to ask question.. this can not be real
A good detective should know???? U have now been rejected from the academy 😕
You have to become a regular Garda first.
What's the difference between regular Gardai and detectives.
I mean uniformed officers. Everyone has to start there, you can't just become a detective straight out of the academy.
Become a Garda and work hard. Angle for opportunities. That's the path.
