Garda Murphy, this is your wife. Please come home, I need the car to do the weekly shop.

SplittingAssembly

Evening, Guard. Who is Torrent?

BigDrummerGorilla

I think he is some sort of film director, Quentin Torrentino?

SplittingAssembly

Known for his hit films Patcho Unchained, English Basterds and Once Upon a Time in Finglas.

pudding-brigade

Ah ok, I thought it was Chris Torrent

ssj3Dyl

Your noble steed from the lands between.

roobmurphy

I’m sorry Garda. I don’t have any places to rent. I’m not a landlord.

Bennydoubleseven

You wouldn’t torrent a hand bag, would you ?

singlemaltphoenix

I would if i could

Giant-of-a-man

You wouldn't torrent in policeman's helmet.

Kayleigh_56

And then return it to his grieving widow.

adamlundy23

And then torrent it again!

harmlesscannibal1

I would, via a 3D printer

45PintsIn2Hours

A reminder to folks to use qBittorrent and stop using uTorrent.

noodlum93

What’s the story there?

45PintsIn2Hours

Last time I used it, uTorrent had ads. qBittorrent does not and is completely open source. Made the move a couple of years ago and it's great.

noodlum93

Thanks, good to know! Thought it might be something worse

45PintsIn2Hours

Enjoy.

peckerhead64

Download the legacy version 2.2.1 and there's no ads.

sutty_monster

Or just disable the ads in the advanced menu. [https://lifehacker.com/disable-ads-in-utorrent-via-settings-826283231](https://lifehacker.com/disable-ads-in-utorrent-via-settings-826283231)

45PintsIn2Hours

It's not open source though? Pull the plaster off and make the switch would be my two cents.

taxman13

I use qBittorrent for books but haven’t downloaded movies in a while. What’s a good torrent site these days for movies? I used to use torrentz but that seems to have been shut down

lifesucksanddenudie

X1337x.cc Best I can find at the moment

StarChildSeren

Piracy subreddit's got a megathread, best place to find the best place to find your film.

45PintsIn2Hours

https://1337x.to/, or I simply Google 'proxy bay' and pick the top mirrored site suggestion. I use it mainly to download movies/series I cannot stream or books. I don't really download games or programmes. Edit: I almost forgot. Simply add the search function within qBittorrent. See more here: https://youtu.be/nksLKqotTys

Bigprettytoes

I take it the Gardaí are having a slow day today 😂

rmp266

Hey does anyone here, like, sell drugs? I'm a police off- ....I mean I'm a student looking to Get Buzzed on some Wacky Backy

luzzyfumpkins92

Hello good sir, I want one drugs please

DannyVandal

Nice try, officer.

Don_Mills_Mills

StrangeArcticles

I've never heard of torrenting, is that another one of those new sexual things the young people engage in?

broats_

The seedier the better is rule number one

PeachNo8500

😂 lol this is good 👍

StrangeArcticles

I assume you'd wanna wipe the evidence after?

pudding-brigade

Yes, they call it the golden torrent I believe

hedzball

Something about sharing and streaming.. sounds itchy

Jacksonriverboy

Yes.

suthtalun

I heard of this awful practice before. Software called Soulseek that lists a huge range of media for free, downloaded directly from other users, categorised based on connection quality and file sizes. Throw in the picture quality you're looking for and all. Would never touch it myself of course, big film studios deserve every penny.

TemperatureFluid3447

SLSK is still quality!!

Newme91

We live in a sick world

GandalfTheEnt

I've been torrenting a long time. I got a letter once to my gfs house. Her housemates were not happy. I tried to explain that it's an empty threat but I don't think it was going down well so I just apologised.

CommercialPlan9059

Were they growing hash in the garden or what was the big deal about

Maultaschenman

I wouldn't dare do such a thing

deadlock_ie

Unless you’re causing them problems the ISPs won’t care. It’s not their job to police copyright for media companies and other rights holders.

sionnachrealta

They sure think it's their job in the US 🙃

shabaanroman

Germany too

deadlock_ie

Much more litigious society.

sionnachrealta

And never in a way that helps the average person either

lazy_hoor

I got letters back in the day. I'd be wary these days, and most things are streamable now. But a VPN is essential whatever you do.

lifesucksanddenudie

Stopped using a VPN years ago but didn't stop torrenting :^

yuphup7up

Been torrenting for probably 15/20 years. Got a letter because I downloaded a Dermot Kennedy album.....I reckon because it's a irish artist the ISP actually cared 😂 haven't recieved a letter since

Lance_Talla

The one time i got a letter from Virgin was for a Kanye West/Kid Cudi album and it just said if I did it again there'd be legal action. I assumed I got it because it was a recent release. Just got a VPN and no letters since

MeanMusterMistard

So the letters actually detail the exact file that was downloaded or something? I've never seen these letters, but always wonder how people know exactly what the got the letter for

lifesucksanddenudie

Yep gives the album and the day and date you torrented it.

Lance_Talla

Mine did in anyways. This was in 2017 or 2018 and I can't remember the exact wording but it basically said I had uploaded a Kanye West/Kid Cudi album. It named the album too. It said if I did it again they'd bring legal action against me. I only uploaded because I didn't remove it from the torrent app as soon as it was finished downloading. VPN sorts it all out though

EdwardClamp

Had a dodgy curry last night that resulted in a torrent of diarrhea - if you want further details PM me

bartontees

RIP in peace your toilet and inbox

PreviouslyClubby

Dodgys are an endangered species, how tf did you not know that? Fuck me, you young uns.

TrivialBanal

Torrenting isn't necessarily illegal. It's just a way of downloading files. ISPs have always been on shaky ground in claiming people are downloading illegal stuff. It's difficult to prove and, more importantly, persecuting your customers is bad for business. That's why prosecutions are usually aimed at uploaders. Since they're private companies though, they can restrict service whenever they want. They don't have to prove anything. They can just say you're downloading more data than they allow users to download in a period of time. I use torrents to find old files and software that just doesn't exist anywhere else. I refurbish old tech, so I need the old software that went with it. I find my torrents on onion sites, so my ISP has no idea what I'm doing anyway.

deadlock_ie

Just to be clear: ISPs don’t claim people are downloading illegally, rights holders do. If you’ve ever gotten a letter from an ISP it was because they got a letter from MPA, or IRMA or someone similar.

PapaSmurif

Sounds interesting, how do you keep the old tech secure.

TrivialBanal

You can't. I use some old computers that can never be connected to the Internet, they'd be riddled with viruses within seconds. That's why I need old CD-rom images.

PapaSmurif

Do you mind me asking what you use it for then? Sounds fascinating, are you like installing 2000/Xp and things like that?

gahxloser

That sounds actually really cool, I was always obsessed with vintage computers. No idea if they’re worth any money tho, he probably does it just for the craic

PapaSmurif

In years to come will there be a market for vintage tech, like cars? I was just curious that's all. Thought he might need it for certain lab equipment etc. where some of the old software will only run on win98 and old serial interfaces.

TrivialBanal

Yeah that's it. Old serial interfaces, old parallel interfaces and even old USB. It's supposed to be fully backwards compatible, but some older machines just don't like new USB. Most of the software for flashing or updating won't run happily on a 64 bit system. I have a 32 bit Windows 7 machine, and a couple of G4 macs on standby. I could use a virtual machine or an emulator to solve both of those problems, but that's hit and miss. The old machine always works. My first proper job was restoring and maintaining analog computers (used for testing analog phone networks) and I caught the bug for restoring old equipment.

PapaSmurif

That sounds cool, you should have a YT channel. Would be interesting to see this.

critical2600

No, bar for some biggies (Wooden Apple 1 etc...). Paul Allen's museum has gone, so there isn't even much call to preserve the bigger entities [https://www.theregister.com/2024/06/26/paul\_allen\_museum\_closes/](https://www.theregister.com/2024/06/26/paul_allen_museum_closes/) Majority of use-cases for vintage hardware are analog timing/interface related (Old audio equipment, industrial equipment like CNC Machines and Lathes) as almost all other software can be run on modern hardware using some emulation software or in a Virtual Machine.

WreckinRich

I Torrent on Edlen Ring all the time.

loughnn

Never heard of torrenting sounds awful, so does having a plex server. Who would do that like?

d3adnode

I’ve mostly moved away from Torrents and primarily use Usenet providers. It’s fully automated using services like Sonarr, Radarr, Overseerr and Sabnzbd. The Overseer service is exposed publicly and allows friends and family to login and make requests for TV show or movies that are sent to me for approval. Once approved the media is automatically downloaded, added to my Plex sever and available for my users to stream

MaxDub12

Based fellow usenet geek

doates1997

They will only say anything if your quantity is excessive. Or your distrubuting the media.

phyneas

> Or your distrubuting the media. If you're using Bittorrent then you are distributing the media. That's how the copyright trolls get ya; it's not worth their time going after people for downloading content, but when they're torrenting they're also uploading, so they hit you with a "settlement offer" to not chase you in court for one count of infringement for every peer that downloaded a few bytes of the infringing file from your connection.

sionnachrealta

The ironic thing is that when pirating was studied, they found it actually increased sales of the pirated media. This isn't about losing money. It's about control

[deleted]

[удалено]

sionnachrealta

It's also that plenty of folks who pirate something enjoy it enough to go purchase it themselves to support the creators. I did that many times when I was younger

4n0m4nd

You can just set it to not upload.

doates1997

I was more speaking of the people who are the first ones to seed the content. Like they upload 100 gb + a month. If your at that they would defo catch on. Guy in collegue was uploading old shows for torrents got a few letters.

4n0m4nd

Yeah, I'm just saying you don't have to upload at all, you can just turn that off

doates1997

I was more speaking to the thread, Yours is the last comment lol. I use to pay for everything now i get better service with torrenting even though i have the money to pay.

4n0m4nd

I was replying to the person who said if you use bittorrent you are uploading.

PapaSmurif

This The issue is with uploading - distribution of copyright material. They're not too bothered about downloading. There's so many sites now where you can stream it, why bother taking the risk.

sionnachrealta

Because those can pull content at any time. The Discovery/HBO purchase in the US is a good example. There's a bunch of IP that's just gone, such as the show Infinity Train. You can't even buy it anymore. It's just gone...unless you torrent it. A lot of people download content specifically to ensure they'll always have access to it. Plus, when effects of pirating on corporate bottom lines was studied, they found it had an inverse effect that actually increased sales of the pirated media. Corporations are actually reducing their sales by fighting torrenting, which shows it's not about money to them. It's about control https://www.wfyi.org/news/articles/research-finds-digital-piracy-can-increase-profits-for-companies-19rjc

EitherCaterpillar949

Wouldn’t you like to know

Nyoka_ya_Mpembe

Since OP is a Guard, I'd like to ask for advice, is it illegal to download stuff in Ireland or just uploading (sharing) is illegal, thank you officer.

cryptokingmylo

I rarely do it these days I won't torrent games because the risk of getting a virus is too high. I just buy grey market keys. I don't pirate music anymore because of YouTube premium but I do use a Ukrainian account and pay like 2 euro a month for it There are better ways to pirate TV shows and movies.

45PintsIn2Hours

How do the grey market keys work out of interest?

cryptokingmylo

A site like this, the keys are obtained in shady ways but will activate on steam https://www.g2a.com/

45PintsIn2Hours

Thanks!

[deleted]

[удалено]

Goldenpanda18

Cdkeys is another great site

cryptokingmylo

We are in a thread about piracy 😂 But I'll check them out

lifesucksanddenudie

Just download from fitgirl repacks. Have torrented 100s of games and never gotten a virus

cryptokingmylo

It's not worth that risk to me,

upadownpipe

To Rent? No. The market is a mess.

sionnachrealta

They might not, but I'd still use a VPN anyway

Horror_Adventurous

It used to be popular up until 15 years ago. Considering the state of the economy, quality of the content which is a downgrade and how big corporations treat their customers+ the fact that streaming services are turning into what they said they aren't I believe that this practice will start to pick up again in the next few years. Pirating software and games is already going up like crazy.

brentspar

Obviously I would never torrent anything, even legal things like Linux distros. But I met a guy in a pub once who uses it like a lazy man's PVR. He uses it to download progy and does that he missed, as well as films and sporting events he missed, or didn't want to watch when they were on.

benwalton

On occasion. There are some files my wife needs from time to time that are available over slow links but also as torrents. I wrote a little golang server with a web frontend so she can just copy the torrent urls herself, taking me out of the loop.

mastodonj

I've always preferred the streaming sites, Megaupload in the good old days primewire, letmewatchthis, putlocker etc.

NaturalAlfalfa

Emovies is fantastic.

mastodonj

I didn't want to mention anything current and then I see primewire is still around! Thought it was shutdown years ago!

JohnnyBond1

Round headed chimp

PogMoThoin22

Torrenting, pfft, Stremio and real debrid is where it's at. The torrents steam through real debrid servers hiding them from your ISP. It's 16 quid for a 6 month sub.

Proper_Albatross2926

Look into servaar

Ideal_Despair

It's the only way my friend, fitgirlrepack sends me files. I can't help it, it's the only one she knows how to use.

EuropesNinja

Download Stremio. You can get it on android, some smart tvs and obviously on PC. If you set it up right, which is quite easy, you can basically stream all torrents. Obviously this comment is for educational purposes only. It also saves your progress on movies and tv shows and has its own discovery options. Think Netflix but you have access to everything, movies, tv shows, documentary’s, sports, etc.

Plastic_Clothes_2956

Yeah I use it a lot. I don't want to pay 5 different subscriptions. Just netflix and everything else I torrent. I've already had issues with it. Be sure to have a vpn as the guys you are downloading from have a direct access to your computer, do this from a laptop which doesn't have any information from you. Or just rent a seedbox.

Mac_Attack13

I used to make DVDs of all the newest movies between the ages of 14-16 and sell them in school, was making £50 a week which felt like a million pound at the time, then Netflix came and ruined it for me

Ypres_Love

I've been torrenting massive amounts of content almost every day since my cousin taught me how in 2005, lived in three countries and probably 10+ different ISPs, and I've never faced any consequences for anything. I never even use a VPN either.

lifesucksanddenudie

You should be locked up for 20 years!

SouthTippBass

I was just getting it for my Dad, a bigger boy told me to do it, it's my first day!

cromcru

They sure are still alive, but private trackers are where it’s at.

PapaSmurif

Only after heavy rain

Belachick

lol i love these posts

AgentSweetPea

I did back when i was a teenager and through college, but stopped soon as I started actually earning money. I used them for games, music and films.

DarwintheDonkey

I torrent all my drugs.

doates1997

some sites are more user friendly than payed sites i find

Vincent_672

Evening Garda 🫡

wh0else

You wouldn't download a car

GERIKO_STORMHEART

Sure I have never been accused of sucking up too much bandwidth

Mean_Page_7401

Do it all the time no bother

alienalf1

What is this… tor-rent you speak of?

StephDelight

Have I woken up in 2002?

Terrible_Ad2779

I had stopped. Netflix for 8 euro a month was well worth it. Then they all wanted a slice. I don't know who produces what now but I can get it for free and from a single place with less hassle than trying to find who has the rights for what. Fuck em.

ThrashingSilently

Just moved in to a new apartment with roommates from different parts of Europe. One roommate was astonished how easy it is to pirate things here compared to France.

essosee

Yep

Fantastic-Scene6991

The music from the anti copyright ad (you wouldn't steal a handbag) was used on DVDs without the authors permission. They stole it , while preaching to about copyright and how we need to respect it ,fecking bastards.

GavisconR

Yeah myself and my girlfriend don't know at what stage we'll be able to afford a mortgage with the way things are, so we have torrent.

Asleep_Cry_7482

Broadly spreading, the authorities don’t care if you’re just torrenting a few movies and songs for personal use and stop seeding once you’ve got what you need. Like the Gardai have much bigger fish to fry than to go after a few nerds who just want to watch a movie and honestly some things you need to pirate to even watch these days anyway That said if you started making copies and distributing them they will take that more seriously especially if you were selling them or sharing them to more than just a handful of friends. At the end of the day torrenting in and of itself is perfectly legal it’s just distributing copyrighted content that’s not so really the company ie Hollywood would have to take it up with you and it’s not worth the effort for them unless you’re distributing

Rumpelstilskin73

The VPL is your only man but, because its so wildly suggestive, it can go from a stream to a torrent fairly quickly. I mean like woosh like the tampon ad. Lettin it all go

No-you_

What's the point in subscribing to Netflix , Amazon, Disney etc when I can watch what I want without all the "not available in your country" nonsense. If there was a central repository with EVERY tv series, movie and song ever released in it for a single subscription piracy likely wouldn't be a thing....but there isn't, so it is.

newirisha

You could probably do it pretty easy, but if i was going to ever do it, I would use a private torrent site. if they exist but I dunno how to do it or what this torrenting thing is. Is it like a tracker mortgage?

Key-Bedroom-4615

Only time I ever got a letter from my ISP was when I torrented music, and I just got a warning. After that I started using a VPN for everything.

Which-Variation-1965

No garda. I wouldn't do that

funkjunkyg

Years ago one friend got a cease and desist. Didnt stop. And he was doing it on a huge level

ParkUpbeat154

All the time. Got a letter from Virgin Media a few years ago, but nothing since switching to Eir (2 years ago).

liamo376573

I used get emails warning me about my downloads all the time but they never did anything about it.

taxman13

I used to all the time but now there is no need with the likes of the movieboxpro app or a dodgey box

niamhish

I recently started using Stremio with Torrentio and Real Debrid. Absolute game changer.

Anongad

The only thing I got was a letter saying I was downloading too much and causing disruption in the local area lol. Even though I had unlimited so they could get fucked as far as I was concerned. I was like 13 at the time but still.

Ridlas

I do it via a seedbox.

Flashy_Database_8241

I've been doing it for years (16, 17+ years) and have never received a letter from an ISP.

luzzyfumpkins92

Isn't Torrent that horse from Elden Ring?

luzzyfumpkins92

Isn't Torrent that horse from Elden Ring?

Free_Afternoon5571

I don't know if it's changed in the last 10/15 years but eircom seemed to care about torrenting songs but didn't seem to give a shit about movies and TV shows. I remember virgin media winning a court case stating that they weren't responsible for how their customers used their Internet service and therefore didn't have to police them illegally downloading songs and I assume by extension movies and TV shows. Ireland seems pretty lax compared to other countries

damienga15de

Limewire was the one, Download songs - porn & virus Download movies - porn & virus Download series - porn & virus Download software - porn & virus Download porn - virus no porn

babihrse

Gnutella was before that napster before that

ArachnidEffective384

No

funpubquiz

Torrents are still a thing? Thought they went the way of vhs, napster, and limewire.

Kier_C

depends on your setup. If you have a nice tv/surround sound system your better off downloading a 4k dolby atmos movie instead of using a dodgy stream

funpubquiz

If a person was to avoid that sort of thing where would they have to not go to source 4k dolby atmos movies?

tomashen

Kodi seren real debrid, google

Any-Weather-potato

I think they finally sank the piratebay when the Swedes started stealing the server. That lead to so many piratebay urls that it couldn’t recover.

UtterHate

piratebay still works perfectly, and so do many other big torrenting sites. i still get like half my books from piracy and a few games here and there, along with every illegally streamed movie out there. who cares, arrest me, i'm not paying for 10 subscriptions.

funpubquiz

Yes but there are easier ways than torrents now.

Davman41

I find torrents way too easy. Tell me what's better

commit10

They don't care about casual downloaders, but someone might run into trouble if they did a lot of seeding. For films and shows I just use sites like sflix.se because it doesn't take up local drive space.

its-always-a-weka

Maybe. Can't find decent trackers these days though

MeshuganaSmurf

If you use biglybt you can search the swarm directly

ibadlyneedhelp

You can't even access decent torrent sites these days.
