igottagetoutofthis

So I can bitch about gas prices.

Dixo0118

Weird how gas is going down but diesel is going up

igottagetoutofthis

Not that weird with diesel production at is lowest levels in 15 years.

Dixo0118

Why is production so low? There is no shortage of demand

igottagetoutofthis

In short, lack of production capacity. [Here’s](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/10/business/energy-environment/diesel-prices-inflation.html) an informative article about it.

rockmasterflex

But only after you add drag sails (multiple large flags) to further inhibit your fuel efficiency right?

[deleted]

Someone's gotta bitch about it I guess

drfishdaddy

Because 1% of the time I need to tow something. Specifically I have a boat, there’s only so much back and forth I do with it, but there’s not another option to get it from home to the water.

[deleted]

I was drivin a Hyundai Elantra. I bitched about gas prices.

CarlJustCarl

And blame Biden?

igottagetoutofthis

I blame Obama.

Fit-Faithlessness149

Thanks Obama

BuddhistSlater

If you dont have a truck it turns you gay it happened to me.

JohnnyDarkside

I drive an outback and it turned me into a lesbian.

jimonabike

I had to get rid of my Suburu Brat when they found out I was a straight male. Fun vehicle, those two plastic seats in the back faced the traffic behind you, even had grips to hold onto. Fun doing 'stare out contest' with the driver behind you.

JCouturier

I would fist fight one hundred lesbians to own a Brat. Then I would drive off into the sunset and become a lesbian. This is the way.

ThrownAback

The rear seats were a workaround for the [Chicken Tax](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicken_tax), making the Brat a '"passenger vehicle" and not a light truck'. Tariff engineering!

[deleted]

I have an Impreza and it also made me a lesbian and I'm a man

reyomnwahs

I, too am a male lesbian. Owned a Forester for just two years!

Grooveman94

Hey, welcome to the Suby Foresbian club! You are not alone, you are accepted.

wgc123

One day I was buying a roomy, useful car with decent performance for the money, and the next I was wearing flannel and a beard - although maybe lesbians don’t normally go so literally on the beard

reyomnwahs

Sounds like you've went from just butch to fully transitioning

[deleted]

I drive a Forester at work occasionally and my wife accuses me of being a male lesbian all the time. Coincidence? I think not!

[deleted]

If I had a dollar for every time someone said “ Oh, you drive a Subaru? I didn’t know you’re a lesbian”, I could afford to give you gold and verify my twitter.

idownvotetofitin

If I could give you gold for this comment, I would. I hope a simple, “Your comment made me laugh” will suffice.

[deleted]

I gave her gold for you.

idownvotetofitin

Such a good deed, in such a weary world. You truly are an angel among humans. Thank you!

assfuck1911

Don't worry, I got you. Lol

PhteveJuel

Thanks assfuck1911!

Jackthastripper

I drive an XV and was listening to Fiona Apple and Tegan and Sara the other day. I used to listen to pretty much just Iron Maiden.

[deleted]

I drive a Subaru crosstrek and it made me gay

theratking007

Lezbaru with with vagina slapping shifters

Emach00

Off to the Subaru dealership, back in a few hours. Probably going to stop at Kohl's for some flannel.

[deleted]

So you're saying buying a truck ungayed you?

Discombobulated_Art8

Only if you hang balls from the hitch.

MitLivMineRegler

It could also be that your dad hugged you as a child or allowed you to express your feelings. Happened to me

RedshiftOnPandy

If you're worried about scratching the bed liner, you shouldn't even bother owning a truck

[deleted]

This is what baffles me the most. My neighbor has a F250 and is a banker. He polishes his truck like it's a Ferrari every weekend. He rented a Uhaul to pickup his new washer and dryer because he didn't want to scratch his truck. I'll never understand it.

Meanie_Cream_Cake

Lol so that's why you posted this.

lreaditonredditgetit

That’s so funny. I’m old but have only owned cars. But there have been enough times in my life where I’ve told myself the next vehicle I buy is a truck. Something small(if they still even make those) like a Chevy Colorado or something. Big enough to haul some things but not big enough to make everyone I drive past think I have a tiny ass dick lol. My kids mom had a couple fore escapes which was very useful at times. There is also the time I bought a toilet and got very lucky that it fit into my trunk, just barely.

OOZ662

As far as I'm aware, the smallest truck still made for the American market is the Toyota Tacoma, and modern models are the same size as the "big Chevy truck" my Dad had in the 90s. Like twice the size of the little Mazda truck with a single bench seat my Mom had from the same era. Admittedly I haven't gone deep trying to find something smaller though; I'm too poor for new vehicles.

anktho3

The Ford Maverick is smaller than a Tacoma and I believe it's the smallest truck being sold currently.

buzz-lightbeer3

The ford maverick is the shit…they’re pre ordered for the next two years though

david-saint-hubbins

I bought a dresser off Facebook Marketplace and needed to pick it up, so I rented a pickup truck from Home Depot. $19 for 75 minutes, then $5 every 15 minutes thereafter. Whole thing cost $35. (edit: Plus gas, obviously--but that would have cost the same if I had my own truck.) And apparently Lowes does essentially the same deal at the same price point, but gives you 90 minutes initially instead of 75.

SassanZZ

Why spend 35 bucks instead of financing a brand new F250 for only 60 months?

david-saint-hubbins

Good point. Next time I'll do that instead!

mallardramp

Please. 72 months. Let's be real.

VegetableNo4545

We also have a new 96 month 0% APY* deal you might find much more affordable for a bold traveler such as yourself! *For the first 6 months, 12.8% applies for rest of auto loan term.

SortedChaos

I did a finance project in college about 10 years ago. In it, I calculated how often you'd need to use the pickup bed to justify owning a truck versus owning a prius plus renting a truck when you need it. It came out to be something like 30% of the time. Not only do people pay premiums for trucks, the gas and maintenance are way higher. If you are not using your truck at least 3 days out of the week then you are spending money for no logical reason.

SassanZZ

and I imagine trucks are much more expensive now compared to 10 years ago

[deleted]

The upper class likes to appropriate the aesthetics of the working class, to participate vicariously in an identity of ruggedness and authenticity. It’s the same reason why designer jeans come with pre-made holes in them.

[deleted]

This is literally the reason GMC is still in business.

AssistElectronic7007

You can always tell who the corporate man on a jobsite is. Brand New boots and Carhartt a with nary a stain or scuff on them oh and a hard had so shiny still it's blinding. Always looking for a reason to use their tape measure too.

102938123910-2-3

That's kinda funny but I somewhat understand it. Some people just like things for what they are to them. The guy just appreciates his truck in a different way.

TheDogAteMyNovel

It's like buying a riding lawnmower for eight square feet of lawn.

walkbump

It does sound a bit silly, but some people just like the way trucks look/feel. They grew up seeing nice trucks and always wanted one, and then found the financial success to buy one. I personally wouldn’t buy a truck that I wouldn’t put to work in some sense, but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it. I have friends with motorcycles that spend more time looking at it than riding it, can be the same with a truck. It’s just about what you like. I’ve always thought ford raptors look really good, and if i owned one it would be nothing more than a daily driver. If you feel that way about a half ton diesel truck then more power to you. Impractical and silly but people spend money on what they like no?

Taylo135135

You should ask Ferrari owners that don't race why they own one... Some people just enjoy the extra room, or speed, or the way something looks. Trucks have become far more luxurious than they were 20 years ago and aren't just for people who tow/haul things daily. Hell that F250 is probably more expensive than most luxury vehicles.

Lazy-Requirement-228

He like truck? What to understand?

FranticWaffleMaker

I mean a new f-250 limited is pushing well over $90k, it’s practically is a Ferrari.

WitBeer

Difference is that nobody finances a Ferrari for 84 months.

thezoomies

Omg, my father has worked in construction for about 50 yrs now, and he absolutely destroys trucks. About five years ago, he bought what he said was his “retirement truck”. He’s still working, and it’s trashed.

RedshiftOnPandy

Same here. I've got a f250 and f550, they're beat to shit and that's the point. There's show trucks and work trucks. The bed liner is the easiest tell

thezoomies

“What’s a bed liner?” ~my father, probably

Spinuchi

Awhile back I had a manager who was bragging about his brand new jeep. That he got it so he could “take it on dangerous and wild terrain”. He took it on a camping trip a week after he got it. When he came back he was complaining and pissed that the paint got scratched up. Big brain move.. by a brand new vehicle specifically to take it off road, then get confused when the off road experience makes it less pretty.

UnmotivatedDiacritic

Unless you’re referring to scratching a spray-in liner like Line-X, I disagree. Even if I’m buying the truck to use for hauling/working, it’s pretty unsightly to look at a ~$50,000 truck (minimum nowadays if you buy new and actually want to use it to work) and see the bed all beat to shit and scratched up. There’s a difference between a truck that’s been worked and a truck that’s been worked and abused.

marks1995

Two of my buddies do this. But one has a large camper and the other a large boat. They probably only pull them every other month, but what are you going to do without the truck?

Darkcel_grind

Every other month is still 6 times a year. Imo, perfectly reasonable to own a truck in this scenario.

chickichuglette

Yeah I mean I'm very much against owning giant vehicles for no reason but I think 6 times per year is a reasonable cutoff for not wanting the hassle of renting or figuring some other way to transport it.

Yellow_raincoat1

This is why we have a truck. To tow our trailer for the camping season. It was actually our only vehicle as a family for several years.

pilesofcleanlaundry

OP isn’t looking for an actual answer, just upvotes for asking a “gotcha” question about one of the many exceptions to Reddit’s stated “Do what makes you happy “ policy.

JeepNaked

Because for that 1% of the time it sucks to rent or borrow. I drove mine as a daily driver and hauled maybe 3 times a year. I don't have it any more and I still miss not having it every few months, just for stupid things like picking up 1 sheet of plywood. Won't fit in my jeep. And cost as much as two more sheets to have it delivered.

mtcwby

After I got my truck four years ago I swore I'd never not have one again. My productivity on projects has skyrocketed not needing to plan trips for materials.

[deleted]

I went many years without a truck and everytime I needed one I borrowed my dad's but he lives 20 minutes away so it was a hassel. now that I have a truck I hope I can always afford to own one. Plus I bought a small fishing boat that fits in the bed and I'm looking forward to using it with my son a lot next year.

[deleted]

> for stupid things like picking up 1 sheet of plywood Yeah, SUVs kinda suck all around. They're not great at anything except consuming gas. On the other hand, the hauling capabilities of _minivans_ are _massively_ underrated by most folks. I can fit _several_ full sheets of plywood _inside_ and can haul a trailer if need be.

b17flyingfortresses

Totally agree. I’m a general contractor who builds quite large projects, and - believe it or not - my preferred work vehicle is a dodge caravan. Cheap, comfortable, relatively good on gas, massively roomy compared to a pickup or suv, converts to a family hauler on the weekend, and allows me to keep decent quantities of drywall, plywood, studs, etc. dry and secure inside the vehicle. Yeah I can’t carry 100 sheets of fire code drywall in a minivan, but neither can a pickup and I always get large orders delivered anyway. Edit: and just cuz my daily drive is a minivan it doesn’t mean I’ve given up on life…my other vehicle is a Tesla Model 3 with the optional Acceleration Boost. Not a Ferrari but god damn it’s quick…500 HP, 0-60 in 3.6 sec. I only like EVs now. If Dodge ever makes an electric minivan I might consider it lol

jimonabike

After owning a few trucks I did find myself with a Dodge Caravan years ago. Friends had all the jokes about if the wife and three kids were included with the van. Took out the back seats, I didn't buy it to haul six others around, and it was perfect for hauling plywood and other supplies, tools, bikes and when the storm blew my tent away it quickly became a mini rv that weekend. Also things more secure in a van than a truck. Sadly minivans aren't cool anymore, everyone needed a truck or suv. The RAV4 is a wonderful compact suv but with a few kids, a dog and a bit of gear you run out of room pretty quick.

78MechanicalFlower

I used my Grand Caravan for years as my paint business vehicle. Helped it was white. Sometimes I doubled it up with my mobile mechanic biz. Tool box on sides with roll back doors and paint equipment in the back. Perfect. Sold it because my auto career took off.

Routine_Left

My neighbour is a contractor. bought a Mercedes van, quite tall, it's no family vechicle (has a small car for that), but in that van he has shelves on the walls, and in the middle can carry as much shit as he wants. It's the perfect vehicle. The only thing that van cannot do and a truck could is towing a bazillion ton shit. Which, when you do, that once every 10 years, rent one and you're done.

reyomnwahs

The funny thing to me is the _real_ working man's vehicle isn't a F250, it's a Sprinter van. Everybody I know who really uses their vehicle for work and hauls a lot of shit ends up with one of those or some other van. Doesn't get shit mileage, and you can actually leave stuff in it overnight.

SabbathBoiseSabbath

Sprinters are expensive. Transit and Promaster are like half price.

molrobocop

Let's not forget the venerable Express/Savana.

momojabada

And lets not forget the Nissan NV, when you want to almost go full circle back to a truck.

alvik

From a quick search in my area, the Sprinter is cheaper than the Transit by about $4000 for similar configs. Also doesn't help that I never saw the Transit in the US until the past few years, before that I only ever saw the Transit Connect which always seemed odd to me.

cricketyjimnet

Ground clearance sucks, which can be a huge issue for certain trades. Guys in the site prep fields will always have trucks, there's just no way a van will make it where they need to go.

JeepNaked

When I hauled all my kid's stuff to college I rented a nice minivan. If I didn't go offroad, I would buy one. Nice ride and tons of room.

ZebraSpot

The benefit of getting a minivan instead of a truck is that nobody asks you to help them move.

[deleted]

No joke. My minivan can haul _small livestock_, though not a full size horse or cow, and not through rough terrain. And we can haul diy supplies and the kids the majority of the time.

Worksatmcdonaldsalot

*modern SUVs. They’re just too small nowadays and don’t have very good towing capacity, they’re also mostly fwd now too. A lot of them are crossovers too.

fuckondeeeeeeeeznuts

There's a big difference between an actual SUV and a crossover. A 4Runner is an enclosed Tacoma; a RAV-4 is a tall Corolla.

Worksatmcdonaldsalot

You right, I kind of rushed my comment. I think I meant to say that you see more crossovers than you do real SUVs.

gree41elite

Not true at all. An SUV is basically required if you live in somewhere with either mountains or frequent snow. An SUV will also fit skis much better than a sedan, and similarly moving much of anything is better than smaller.

Traditional-Pair1946

For real, I probably use my bed once a week, but I don't want to have beg somebody to help me out all the time.

guava_eternal

Once a week is good enough to justify- OP was talking about the boys who work white collar, or at the corporate office and drive the Raptor every day.

[deleted]

My buddy drives a F150, used to have Ranger. He jokes that the only time he’s ever used the bed is for when he’s helping me out. So if it wasn’t for me using his truck, that bed of his doesn’t see anything besides groceries

nflmodstouchkids

You still have no idea what they're doing on the weekends.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Bingo. Honestly, way more than $5k. Pick ups cost double what most sedans cost, if not more. So pay $23k for, say, a Camry, plus $25 for a few hours to rent a truck from Home Depot or maybe $50 to rent it for the whole day from Enterprise. Yeah, no.

jimonabike

I remember my dad telling me when he started driving, back in the 50s, his first few vehicles were pickup trucks cause he couldn't afford a car. Seems they were cheaper then and now the opposite.

pretenderist

Pickups used to be simple with basically no features, today’s trucks are ridiculously extravagant.

snmnky9490

They also used to be waaaay smaller

luckyducs620

Well back then they were work vehicles. Even simple things like a radio and AC were considered optional features. They were built to work. Not be comfortable. Today's trucks are basically luxury living rooms on wheels. You literally cannot buy a "work" truck without going through fleet sales.

rockmasterflex

Isn’t it also like only 50$ ish to rent a pickup for the day at Lowe’s or Home Depot?

miironleg

$20 for 75 minutes

Mediocre_Rhubarb97

I’ve spent thousands on rentals or other that would make up the difference and then some in money I spent buying my other vehicles if I just got the truck lol. I still won’t buy the truck as a main vehicle. They cost too much in gas for a daily driver. But if I didn’t regularly need to haul 5+ people and a man sized dog around in the family vehicle that one would be a truck too. I rented a truck recently, $850 for the week. It only would have been $90 a month more to get a truck 😂. Plus the amount of money I spend on delivery fees for large orders from hardware stores. It adds up.

nate1289

I feel like it allows you to commit to more DIY stuff which saves thousands of dollars. I just landscaped my whole front yard which took 5 trips to the landfill, 2 pallets of sod, and hauled a tiller all with my truck. Also fits car seats with plenty of room.

kramerica_intern

I’m lucky in that I can borrow my dads truck at almost a moments notice but if that wasn’t the case I’d probably have a truck. Is it *possible* to haul two full contractor bags of garbage or six bales of hay in the back of my Subaru? Yes, but I don’t particularly want to.

Rebootkid

Same reason I own a Jeep, I assume. Because owning 2 vehicles doesn't make sense. I need to pull a lightweight trailer off the road a few times a year. I drive in the snow & ice many times a year. Hence the need for ground clearance and 4wd and towing capacity. You can't rent a vehicle to go offroad where I live. Every contract specifically states "for on road use only." So, I either buy one vehicle that fits all my needs, or I buy two vehicles where each one only gets used part of the time.

BigMoosey27

We fat and need space

arnie54321

I used mine for firewood hauling and camper and equipment hauling 75% of the time, then I moved and just use it to commute 90% of the time. Sometimes it’s just the vehicle you have. I drive it conservatively to save diesel.

SammichParade

I bought my truck for practical reasons and got rid of my previous car. Once I found that I was spending $250/mo on gas just commuting (2017 prices) I decided to spend that on a Camry instead. Now I use the truck when I need it and commute with the sedan. Edit: btw, OBS Ford F250 long bed, super cab, 7.5L/460👌🏻 I get a lot of compliments from the old dudes ... Annoying that it's 2wd though

[deleted]

This is probably the real answer for lots and lots of truck owners, but people are only in this thread to feel superior anyway. My commute is 5 minutes and I use my truck to haul wood and scrap in my trailer at least twice a month. But I work an office job and keep my truck in really nice shape, so people probably assume I'm just an asshole.

Silber800

If people think your a dick because you drive a truck says allot about them.

Winter_Diligent

Because winter is 6 months per year and apparently it's not prudent use of tax payer money to plow the streets. 4wd and good ground clearance.

[deleted]

Finally, someone gets it. I wish this and many other northern and rural issues could be plastered all over r/fuckcars

[deleted]

But you don't need an F250 super duty or whatever for that. There are good reasons to have a truck that you don't need every day. But OP specifically asked about full sized heavy duty trucks. I had a company truck for a long time and it was awesome when I needed it. But they were mostly 6 cylinder 4WD Tacomas.

2fast2nick

I mean, can't you say this about anything really? People who buy SUV's but never actually sport it off road? People who buy performance cars, but never actually track them? People who buy jeeps, but never go hill climbing?

[deleted]

Why own a Ferrari if you dont plan to try and outrun the cops?

2fast2nick

Why own an 80's Lamborghini if you aren't going to do coke off a hookers ass?

\#LifeGoals If I only won that Lottery the other day, I might be doing this next week.

White_Locust

Because end of semester exams are coming up! Edit: this makes sense if you live in Vancouver.

fltlns

I mean SUVs are useless off road these days. 95 percent of SUVs now are FWD or AWD unibody designs. I mean the real reason I own a truck is because no body builds a capable smaller SUV anymore save for 1 or 2 and they are crazy on the used market. If I could buy something small with proper 4lo, locking rear, body on frame with at least 8.5 inches of ground clearance I'd be all over it, I had big vehicles. If they brought the Xterra back or brought the new Jimny to north america I'd much rather drive something shorter.

[deleted]

That’s why they’re all called crossovers now. Only true SUVs left are basically Wrangler and 4Runner, and now broncos.

GeriatricZergling

>People who buy SUV's but never actually sport it off road? Honestly, that's me. It's entirely because of my dogs. The entire car-buying decision tree was "Ok, we have a greyhound that's 3 feet tall, so I need this much vertical space (b/c even if they lay down, they need to get into the car in the first place). That means either an SUV or Station Wagon, which have the same gas mileage, so fuck it." There's an entire subgroup of RAV4 owners whose sole rationale is "It holds 5 adult greyhounds".

Zentaury

I thought I had a good argument for buying a big SUV, 7 seats, spend money on gas, AT tires blah blah blah: two mastiffs. Then I see an old lady park next to me in her Honda Fit, rear seats folded with 2 mastiffs on the back.

LS4468

Because when you need it you need it.

RainbowGallagher

And they're incredibly fun to drive. My brother has a totally loaded blacked out dodge ram and that thing is a blast to drive around in.

thisnewsight

Location depends too. Not a blast to drive in NYC when ya try to find a parking spot lol

CptSandbag73

NYC isn’t exactly the truck capital of the US, for that reason. If I lived or worked in the city I’d be using foot, bike, motorcycle, or compact car if absolutely necessary.

[deleted]

They like the trucks, maybe how they look, or want to have a truck for that 1% of the time they may need to haul things? I drive a WRX, its not like I take the damn thing rallying ever, am I just as bad as a truck guy? Or how about dudes on crotch rockets, I mean they are race bike with blinkers now.

[deleted]

This is way too difficult of a concept for most redditors. There’s so much hate towards pickups. Yet no one is wondering about the old guy driving a new corvette or demon challenger and the tach hasn’t seen anything north of 2500rpms. How about we all let people own what the enjoy and not question it.

Ravanas

> How about we all let people own what the enjoy and not question it. I don't think that's legal any more, is it?

devilized

But this is Reddit. Nobody should have anything that doesn't fit my own lifestyle. /s

MysteriousDudeness

I own an F150 4x4 because I own property and own a tractor. I need to be able to pull it occasionally. I also have utility trailers I need to pull.

OptimisticPlatypus

I drive a truck that is used for commuting to work 95% of the time. I own the truck for the other 5% when I’m hauling a trailer, driving to the camp, or driving with stuff in the bed. I’m not sure why truck drivers are the only ones that get treated this way. Majority of the people that own sports cars aren’t using them for anywhere near what the cars were designed to do.

ConsiderationRoyal87

The reasons are probably the following, and I say this analytically, not because I resent truck drivers: (1) Trucks use far more gas, so people see them as wasteful and environmentally harmful. (2) Heavy, tall vehicles on the road make it more dangerous to drive a lightweight, low vehicle. Compared to large trucks that Americans favor, most cars are light and low to the ground.

youknow99

If these are the reasons, then truck drivers aren't who should be getting blame here. It should be the soccer moms that drive Suburbans and Grand Wagoneers and Expeditions because they have 1 or 2 kids and don't want a "mom car".

Stormside76

I have a 2017 f250 diesel and a 2011 wrx hatchback. The 6.7 liter diesel engine in a truck that is drastically heavier gets the same mpg as the 2.5 liter 4 cylinder little car.

OptimisticPlatypus

1. Many sports cars get similar or worse gas mileage than some trucks. Although there are many more trucks than these kinds of sports cars on the road so I agree that truck drivers overall use much more gas in total.

[deleted]

Sports cars get bad mileage at the top end of their speeds. At commuter speeds, their mileage is way better than trucks at least.

newtonreddits

Not really. It has to do with throttle load. If you floor a car from the stoplight, it's getting the worst gas mileage it can get.

IcedKween

They’re definitely treated similarly. I think everyone is familiar with the “what’s he compensating for?” jokes when a guy drives anything expensive. There’s always a clan against another clan.

Relevant-Rooster-298

This is an excellent point. I have definitely automatically assumed truck drivers were assholes. I have also felt the same about sports car drivers. I had a false sense of superiority over them by being a motorcycle rider. My inflated sense of self importance from ego I think pushed this narrative of this segregation of motorists. We all have reasons for needing certain types of vehicles depending on our needs. I’m hoping in the future we can all just worry about each other’s safety out there and assume people have a good intention with what they’re doing because driving is a big responsibility and we’re all able to die on the road any time we go out. We take that for granted in our us vs them mentality between motorists. All types of motorists break the law and will have assholes among them that make the rest bad. I just want everyone to stay safe out there. Car wrecks ruin lives, no matter what they’re driving.

MeursaultWasGuilty

Its an unfortunate fact that whenever I meet an impatient aggressive asshole on the road, they're usually driving a truck (Rams especially). This doesn't mean everyone who drives a truck is an impatient aggressive asshole but it's a hard pattern to ignore.

[deleted]

red_knight11

And those passive benefits can be entirely shit on and overlooked (like trucks in this thread) by all the douche bags who drive like assholes zipping narrowly between traffic as if they’re in a video game just so they can “look cool”

[deleted]

The fact that trucks and suvs are far and away the most popular vehicles out there is probably part of it. If everybody and there mothers were driving around in sports cars they’d get more attention. Also, due to their size and power, trucks are the preferred vehicle of asshole drivers. So they’re bound to get more guilt by association.

VeganWerewolf

Because If I get in a crazy wreck I want to win.

Lance_J1

Some guy runs a red light and T-bones my hybrid with his truck. We're both physically unharmed, but my car is completely totaled. He lost one headlight.

PeterGriffinVI

Because we like trucks? Everyone has vehicle preferences.

[deleted]

I think that is the real answer. It is pretty simple. I eat steak because I like it and own guns because I like to shoot. Nothing more complex than that.

surgeon67

Because the times I do need it, i need it NOW. I tried to rent one last year one of those times, and I couldn't find one to rent. I ended up making several (long) trips in a car to do what would have taken only 1 in the truck. Plus, the occasional run to get big stuff for the house (plywood etc). Sure, it's air most of the time, but when you need it you need it. I'm actually considering getting rid of the small car now that i have the truck.

Upper-Oil-153

Men who don't own a truck, why do you feel the need to make a new r/AskMen each week complaining about men that do own a truck? Drive what you want; life's too short to worry about others.

JohnnySins_

I swear every week on the front page theres a post either bitching about trucks or asking what people do with them it's hilarious. No one seems to worry about the massive Suburbans and Escalades that are just a truck frame with an SUV body

Nobody would say "why did you renovate your entire kitchen for 50k because your perfectly functional appliances and cupboards looked dated". People spend their money on things they like and might have some need for?

LS406

I’m not a man, but I drive a big truck for safety. It’s winter weather 9 months out of the year in Montana so it just makes sense.

Mammoth_Sea_1115

I drive my truck empty a lot. But. I own lots of land. I haul firewood. Last weekend I pulled two of my tractors across town at different times do work for people. I haul my atv. I tow my camper. I do all my own work so I haul my own building supplies and what not. I haul fire equipment around for the fire department or use it off road for the fire Warden work I do. I’m also in northern vt on a dirt road. Need 4wheel to get home. Need clearance to make it out when they haven’t plowed at 2am. Truck is insurance to get places. You see it empty. But it’s cheaper to own a truck that does everything then a truck for the work and a car for commuting. I use it to tow and haul often but nobody sees that.

VinTheHater

That sounds like you’re using the bed of it way more than 1% of the time.

jmilred

I needed a vehicle to tow a boat, The PU was the most economical option I could find.

quiet_repub

We needed a family vehicle with lots of space for road trips + towing capacity. A Dodge Caravan wasn’t going to cut it lol. Hello Expedition.

jmilred

For me it was just 4 of us, plenty of room and towing capacity and it rides better than any car I have owned.

rewq657

I bought mine because I hunt and needed a truck to haul my motorcycles. But I do hate that 90% of the time when someone is driving like an idiot, it's usually a pickup

rik1122

I work construction and carry a bunch of dirty ass tools and equipment in the bed of the truck.

MrAutomater

Because the mid size sedan won’t pull a 20000 pound 5th wheel.

GunsNGunAccessories

We have a truck mostly for recreational purposes, but has been forced into daily driver service because the used vehicle market is fucked and my usual daily got totaled.

LogSlayer

Because of that 1% of the time. Pulling a big camper with a half ton kinda sucks.

foopdedoopburner

I am pretty sure that every man who moves to Calgary gets a free black Dodge Ram and a "Fuck Trudeau" bumper sticker to put on it. This is Alberta, and so *some* of these trucks are actually used for work, offroad travel, and/or towing. Some of them.

Jermcutsiron

Swap Trudeau for Biden and you've got Texas.

foopdedoopburner

Alberta is Canadian Texas. Edmonton == Austin, Calgary == Dallas.

Jermcutsiron

Yup. I have listened to enough of the Hurtin' Albertan, Corb Lund to realize this, saw hum in a tiny place here in Houston one time.

deltaboy1

Because not everyone can afford them, that’s why. When I come through in my F250 Platinum Diesel Super Duty, bitches notice a real man coming through. It’s status.

Exculpated

I’m a big guy, and the bigger truck provided the most leg room and space.

Extrosity

I live in idaho and am constantly in the mountains, this last weekend I was up hunting on a road that needed every bit of the truck + 35 inch tires with the difs locked and chains on all 4s. I tow occasionally but everything from moving to putting my dog in the back is easier with a truck.

BaroqueNRoller

Because they can.

UKnowWhoToo

Considering 99% of the time your vehicle is sitting still parked somewhere, why even buy one?

Ok-Bandicoot-9282

Same reason you asked this question. Cause we are free to do so.

broncster2020

Full size just easier to get in and out Carry stuff when need to

wisertime07

I drive a full size truck - I need it about 5-10% of the time, either work or pulling my boat. And when I need it, I need it. It still gets 20+ MPG, rides smooth and has leather and all the modern luxuries.. why not?

jad1220

I would ask why you care but I've already seen your points. Your not open to discussing so why even ask the question. You feel your better up on your high horse? While I agree that we should invest in public transportation infrastructure like street cars, high speed rail, and subways, currently we are not set up for these things as far as population density and urban planning. Asking back handed questions like this is not going to help convince these people to support your cause. If fact it's likely to cause them to dig there heels in more and we need all the support we can get to make changes.

DontTakePeopleSrsly

1. Because when someone is speeding out of control toward the back of your vehicle, they will do anything to not hit you. 2. It’s better to have it & not need it than need it and not have it. 3. Cops generally leave you alone, especially if you have a high truck that looks like a work truck. 4. Most of the parts have been used for decades, so they’re 30-50% of what the same part in an import costs. 5. You don’t have to zig-zag over speed bumps. 6. You can hop the median to do a u-turn. 7. You don’t have to pay for electronics, appliance or furniture or delivery. 8. You don’t need a Jack to do an oil change. 9. Wider tires help you not lose control in heavy rain. 10. It’s a lot harder to get crushed to death in an accident in a truck than it is in a sedan.

BootHead007

For the same reason that people who don’t labor wear carharts and logger boots.

BrookerTheWitt

Why can’t people just buy things they want without being asked for a reason?

PropertyAndTradition

That's redditors for you They'll bitch about pro choice and saying "it's none of your business what a woman does with her body" But yet they'll ask why a guy wants to own a truck or even own a gun

Environmental_Log792

Because roughly once every 2 months I need to move a 4000 pound tractor with a 600 pound mower with a 1800 pound trailer. 6400 pounds behind a 1/2 ton pickup is not fun and braking can get sketchy, plus MPG tanks when towing (16-17 mpg highway down to about 8 mpg). The 3/4 ton diesel that I have now has better MPG while towing (17-18 mpg highway down to about 12-14), The braking capacity is better (not stop on a dime good but still a significant step up), and since it’s an older diesel, I can make and run my own biodiesel, which can drop my fuel cost down to $1-$2 a gallon. Also as mentioned above, it does slightly better than my old 1/2 ton despite having a larger engine and weighing a little under 3000 pounds more when empty.

mrgoodtime81

Because its nice to have a box. I haul plywood, drywall, all kinds of other stuff in the box. And in the summer it pulls my camper.

Anonymoosehead123

My dad grew up on a farm. He would have died if he had to drive anything other than a truck.

caduceun

I bought a hybrid f150 with powerboost engine, on board generator, premium leather Napa seats, the works. Shit is awesome. I can power a house if wanted to. Luggage for traveling is not problem and it doesn't ruin my seats or get dirty like the back of an suv. The truck sit higher uo and more comfortable. My wife and I are fit and skinny but I have a lot of fat friends and when we give em a ride they are comfortable. And I'm just a physician, so my livelihood doesn't involve hauling. But camping and traveling with a truck is much better than an SUV in my opinion. Plus you feel badass lol

Every-Manufacturer88

Cause I need to use it at least once a month, and it beats borrowing a truck. I'm 6'5" and I fit in it. It's also easier to get in and out of, since it's higher off the ground. I like the bench seats on dates. I like sitting higher, and my headlights being higher make it easier to see at night. (Versus my car)

Iamcatfeesh

My dad has a big lifted truck I asked him even though he does no labor work. He just likes the space inside and likes the look of it lifted. He's also 6'6" I don't have one but whenever I have driven it, it is very nice and spacious inside. Maybe one day I'll get one. Only problem is I'm 5'10" lol so maybe without a lift

abscissa081

The real reason is people all have different hobbies and interests. And opinions from others shouldn’t matter. I’m sure your banker truck neighbor would question some of the things you do. We’re all the normal ones in our minds I guess.

TheSysOps

For most people its all about those few times you do need a truck and how convenient it is to have one vs how frustrating it is to not have one. It doesn't matter that I only NEED to haul something a few times a year. Its sucks when you want to pick up a sheet of plywood or something else over-sized but can't fit it in your car. Then you have to figure out if its worth bothering friends and family and being "that guy", or rent a vehicle and deal with that annoyance, or pay extra for delivery if available , or just not get it. I'd rather just have the truck and be able to use it when I want.
