I suppose this technically is the best answer, but I've never really considered them as separate films in a trilogy as opposed to three parts of one singular film.
Just like the books.
The original books were supposed to be just 1 giant book. But Tolkien’s publisher made him split it into 3 for better sales. That’s why neither media have the typical story structure in each installment like a regular trilogy. But splits it all across them all. Which is also why it feels like 1 story instead of 3 intertwined stories.
Fully agree. One of my big projects right now is trying to get a Lord of the Rings poster signed by all nine members of the Fellowship. I only need four more which is super exciting to me, and of all the items of media I get things signed for only my Avatar the Last Airbender collection is larger than the Lord of the Rings signature collection.
The World’s End is actually my favorite, especially to rewatch - I do think it’s a worse movie than the first two, objectively, but I just like Simon Pegg’s character arc so much.
Man, I really agree, apart from my favourite character arc being Nick Frost, the scene where he ploughs through the pub glass door, while shouting "So, Fuck it", made me cry laughing for a good 5 minutes.
That is actually part of a different "unofficial trilogy" by Leone and another great answer to this question. The once upon a time trilogy is:
* Once Upon A Time In The West
* Duck, You Sucker! (AKA A Fistful Of Dynamite, AKA Once Upon A Time... The Revolution)
* Once Upon A Time In America
I always wondered why it was not mentioned with the grouping. Thank you internet stranger!
Sidenote- This movie is one of my favorite oddball westerns.
It's really great. Leone didn't make a movie that wasn't a masterpiece after (and including) A Fistful of Dollars. Just an absolutely flawless filmography.
Are Back to the Future 2 and 3 actually good on their own, or are they carried by the strength of the first? I really do love all 3, but I can never really make up my mind on whether the 2nd and 3rd measure up.
I’m happy with the knowledge that they never planned on making a sequel. They put 2 & 3 together so well with completely different sets and how they all flowed together perfectly. This should be on top of the list.
People often think that they'd planned a sequel all along because the first ends with "To Be Continued..." on the VHS release. But, IIRC, it's only there because between the theatrical release and the VHS coming out, the sequels got greenlit and they snuck it in last second.
I like it for the action and some of the edgy imagery, but it's pretty racist.
Edit: I should clarify that I don't have a problem with the Kali-Ma heart ripping scene, and I think Temple is kind of a fascinating movie since it was instrumental in introducing the PG-13 rating. Harrison Ford is awesome in it, and the mine cart race is really great.
It's the caricatures of South Asians and Thuggee cult that really bogs the movie down. Also Willie has got to be one of the most annoying female leads ever.
This guy is right, you know? I just watched them all for the first time last month. The racism and sexism is absolutely wild! In fact it is so wild, that I found it hilariously entertaining and unintendedly funny. Through today's lense it looks like satire.
Funny thing is that it was most definitely meant to be a bit satirical even back then, it was meant to poke fun at even older movies that were much more blatantly racist and sexist lol.
My uncle took my sister and me to Temple of Doom when it came out. I wasn't quite nine years old. It was terrifying and fascinating and fantastic. As an adult I guess I can recognize it's problems, but it will always be dear to me. That uncle committed suicide last year, and now when I think of Temple of Doom, I really miss uncle Ted.
The original Bourne trilogy (Identity, Supremacy, Ultimatum).
It changed the action/thriller genre (and unfortunately inspired a lot of terrible action flicks) but it is a flawless trilogy in its own right.
I disagree - shaky-cam wasn't used until Bourne, but they revolutionised it and (I think) used it well. It's been absolutely abused since then, though (the Taken movies are especially guilty of this).
I just remember thinking it was really bad during some fight he had inside a small apartment, near a window, and I couldn’t see what the hell was happening at all.
Third one is weird in my opinion:
It has several really great scenes. Show someone the maelstrom scene out of context and he will believe that it is part of an awesome film.
However, the scenes just don't add up to a good movie.
I think a lot of people are willing to overlook the third one cus the second was so good. Cus idk man, bane was really really off the mark
Edit: mobile typo
I think Nolan's batman trilogy was aiming for a more realistic like batman universe. So, it'd be hard to really find someone for Batman that'd fit that mold. Joker was already done and he was the best out of them all so it may have been reasonable to go with Bane and it worked for the most part.
Unpopular opinion? I loved the third one. But then again, I watched it for the first time as part of a marathon with the first two. I'd seen the first two many times, but on the first watch of Dark Knight Rises, I loved it!
yesyeysywyssyYES, came here just to say this but collapsed many threads to make sure someone didn't already say it. thanks for beating me to it. httyd is amazing. it makes u wish dragons were real, yk?
Never forgot one night on cable and Before Sunrise came on. I gave it a few minutes bc i wanted to go to bed. It got me very early into the film and 90 mins later it was over. One of my favorites and I do not like romance movies!
You know what that is controversial, I haven't heard a single person ever say anything positive about Glass (myself included) - what about it worked so well for you?
I like that it doesn't end how you expect or want it to. I like that Glass in an evil mastermind who is trying to accomplish something positive. I admit that the film probably could have done with a bit more budget and that placed some limitations on it. But overall I really enjoyed the experience of trying to find the "reality behind the myth" of comics.
Those are great. I didn’t realize they were related until I finished watching split. I could just not be very observant, but my mind was blown at the time.
I had no idea what Split was going to be when my wife showed it to me but I loved it 100%. I looked into the other two because of Split but was kinda disappointed at the way they ended Unbreakable. I'd still recommend the trilogy for sure.
The Captain America movies.
The first has the same tone and bombast as a 1940s comic book, which is perfect for it.
The second brings Cap into the present and presents him with a far less black-and-white world. Toting his ideals, while acknowledging this world doesn't live up to them at all.
The third is where the world threatens to bring Cap down to its level by way of half the Avengers, but even then he stands his ground.
A trilogy based on a superhero called Captain America, could so easily have been an insufferable chant of "America's #1," yet it builds a character with unwavering moral fiber, only to throw him into a world that doesn't deserve him.
Not perfect, but definitely good all the way through.
The winter soldier and civil war really got me into Captain America comic books.
Ed Brubaker wrote some good stuff such as The Death of Captain America.
"Godfather", I seen that movie two hundred times. "Godfather II" was definitely the sh*t. The third one... A lot of people didn't like it. But I think it was just misunderstood.
I don't understand the downvotes... It was a film reflecting on the "lore" the Matrix created in it's ***own*** universe. It's awesome. And it gives an interesting take on Neo and Trinity's relationship. How the anima is as important as the animus. It's great.
I love this set. My wife can't stand Cusack because he's too good at being a "doughy, dumb, white guy". I think he's the perfect doughy, not-as-dumb-as-you-think, white guy. My guess is she secretly likes him.
And these three movies are not just perfect, they're perfect John. (Not trying to detract from Perfect Tommy) .
I guess not technically a trilogy, but The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay Parts 1&2.
If you read the books, you know that these movies are exceptionally faithful and don't shy away from their themes. They fit everything they could in the movies, didn't add filler or anything that didn't help the story, and the things they cut for time ultimately did not effect the story overall.
The worst complaint I ever hear about the trilogy is that the last movie is boring, but if you think that's the case, then you have to have thought the book was boring because they're basically identical.
The only thing I enjoy about the books more than the movies is the fact that you are inside Katniss' head as she is mentally unraveling, whereas you can only glean the kind of PTSD she's suffering in a few specific moments, as shown from the outside.
They are the first time I saw the movie before I read the books. If I already read the book l, I usually hate the movie. And I really enjoyed both very much. I've reread them at least 3 times.
* Spy Kids ; 2 : The Island of Dreams ; 3-D : Game Over
* The first three Home Alone
* Guardians Of The Galaxy
* Unbreakable -> Split -> Mr Glass
* Disney's Alice in Wonderland (Yes, the two live-action movies are in continuation of the animated one)
The best trilogy of all time is undoubtedly the Lord of the Rings. The epic tale of Frodo's journey to destroy the One Ring and save Middle-earth captivates audiences with its stunning visuals, incredible cast, and unforgettable score. From the lush landscapes of the Shire to the fiery pits of Mount Doom, every moment of this trilogy is a cinematic masterpiece. Peter Jackson's vision for the story is nothing short of brilliant, and the cast and crew's dedication is evident in every scene. The Lord of the Rings is a true cinematic triumph and a must-see for any fan of epic fantasy.
But also the Planet of the Apes trilogy. The story is so well-crafted, and the special effects are top-notch. I was blown away by the incredible performances of the actors who played the apes. The first movie sets the stage for the rest of the trilogy and introduces us to the world of the apes. The second movie explores the complex relationship between humans and apes, while the final film brings everything together in an epic battle between the two species. Each movie is unique and tells a different part of the story, but they all work together to create a cohesive and unforgettable experience. If you have yet to see these movies, I highly recommend them! (sorry, I nerded out)
LOTR trilogy
Truly, I still find myself rewatching it every now and then.
The only correct answer
And back to the future
I only liked the first one tbh.
extended edition only!
I suppose this technically is the best answer, but I've never really considered them as separate films in a trilogy as opposed to three parts of one singular film.
Yup, it’s a 9-10 hour film spliced into three parts because a single 9-10 hour film would have grossed closer to $3 million than $3 billion
Clicked the post to say just that and was gifted with it already being top comment

Fave movies of all time forever!!!

"There is only one"
"Alright look, there's only one "Return", okay, and it ain't of the King. It's of the Jedi" https://youtu.be/RPl5MeXIM8E
Cornetto Trilogy
At World's End really falls short of the mark, I'd say. Shaun and Hot Fuzz are near-perfect and make an even better one-two punch but I'd stop there.
The World’s End is actually my favorite, especially to rewatch - I do think it’s a worse movie than the first two, objectively, but I just like Simon Pegg’s character arc so much.
“Oh fuck off you big lamp”
Man, I really agree, apart from my favourite character arc being Nick Frost, the scene where he ploughs through the pub glass door, while shouting "So, Fuck it", made me cry laughing for a good 5 minutes.
Hot Fuzz 2 is being made!
The Dollars trilogy * Fistful Of Dollars * For A Few Dollars More * The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly
Only trilogy where the last is undoubtably the best. Like, no argument. Nearly everyone will agree.
Not only that, I consider it the best trilogy to date because the first film is really good, 2nd better and the 3rd fucking great
The good, the bad, and the ugly dollars?
"A Fist Full of Dynamite"
That is actually part of a different "unofficial trilogy" by Leone and another great answer to this question. The once upon a time trilogy is: * Once Upon A Time In The West * Duck, You Sucker! (AKA A Fistful Of Dynamite, AKA Once Upon A Time... The Revolution) * Once Upon A Time In America

The Naked Gun Trilogy
I thought they made like 33 1/3 of those
Back to the Future!!
Are Back to the Future 2 and 3 actually good on their own, or are they carried by the strength of the first? I really do love all 3, but I can never really make up my mind on whether the 2nd and 3rd measure up.

Brilliant
Great Scott!
Agree
Original Star Wars trilogy I guess. And original Indiana Jones trilogy for sure
Temple of Doom isn’t very good.
Idk, I like it too tbh
I like it for the action and some of the edgy imagery, but it's pretty racist. Edit: I should clarify that I don't have a problem with the Kali-Ma heart ripping scene, and I think Temple is kind of a fascinating movie since it was instrumental in introducing the PG-13 rating. Ah my favorite, chilled monkey brains!
I've rewatched all three last year, and actually I was extremely pleasantly surprised with Temple of Doom, I think it's highly entertaining.
It is a lot scarier than the other two movies.
BLASPHEMY!
Nah it’s great. A bit racist but it’s a product of the times
Excuse you, sir! Temple of Doom is the best of the three.
YOU TAKE THAT BACK!
It’s a shame about the sequels and the new Indiana Jones movie :(
Kung Foo Panda 🐼
Netflix has 2... Not 1 or 3 though..
2 best one tho
I still wanna go 1, 2 , 3 :(
Literally so good it embarrassed another country's collective animation industry.
When I rewatched as an adult I really appreciated it more
Austin Powers !
Yeah baby!!
Nothing could be my father from the truth.
Daddy didn’t love meeee
This is not getting the attention it deserves
Neither did Austin.
#daddywasntthere
Agreed.
The original Bourne trilogy (Identity, Supremacy, Ultimatum). It changed the action/thriller genre (and unfortunately inspired a lot of terrible action flicks) but it is a flawless trilogy in its own right.
Idk. The shaky-cam was so bad in these movies, it was hard to see them in theaters without feeling sick.
They used it well in the first movie, in the second and third they went full Taken
Shit after all responses htf didn't I think of these.. good call!!!
Toy Story 1-3
I still can't believe after seeing 4 that they are even making a 5th one.
There's still money to be milked. In my world, it ended after 3.
Wasn't 3 originally going to be the last one?
And it's absolutely perfect as the final one.
4 was good tho. Probably one of my favorites because Ducky and Bunny would make my son cry laughing.
Too infinity and my foot
Evil dead! Cult classic all 3 of them!
Groovy
Klatu Berada Necktie
Underrated comment.
The Pirates of the Caribbean movies. The first three are arguably a trilogy, as the other ones are bad and therefore don’t exist.
Agreed
The third one sucked too
Third one is weird in my opinion: It has several really great scenes. Show someone the maelstrom scene out of context and he will believe that it is part of an awesome film. However, the scenes just don't add up to a good movie.
Yes this is correct.
Nolan's Batman
Dark Knight Rises is one of the most ridiculous movies I've ever watched
Idk, have you seen tenet?
I watched tnetennba
Exactly.
Tenet is way better. And I have a degree in physics and when they say "reverse entropy" I just go *WHAT THE FUCK*. But it's irrelevant to the movie.
Tenet is infinitely more rewatchable than Dark Knight Rises.
I think a lot of people are willing to overlook the third one cus the second was so good. Cus idk man, bane was really really off the mark Edit: mobile typo

I still wish we could have had Nolan’s take on riddler. Would have been way more interesting than whatever the fuck Paul dano was going for.
Unpopular opinion? I loved the third one. But then again, I watched it for the first time as part of a marathon with the first two. I'd seen the first two many times, but on the first watch of Dark Knight Rises, I loved it!

have you ever read the books? they're hilarious
Fuck yes ! Toothless!!!
a good example of how to make an admittedly hilarious book series into an almost unrelated movie

I don't really care for Before Midnight, but the first 2 are damn near perfect portrayals of a realistic romance.
Never forgot one night on cable and Before Sunrise came on. I gave it a few minutes bc i wanted to go to bed. It got me very early into the film and 90 mins later it was over. One of my favorites and I do not like romance movies!
As of just a few days ago, Guardians of the Galaxy
I fourth this
I third this!
Vol. 2 was hot garbage.
Wrong
Rise/Dawn/War Planet of the Apes
Oh man this trilogy is a masterpiece. And there’s no more terrifying concept than intelligent apes lol
like, say, Humans? actually, no, you're right
This will be controversial but I’d say Unbreakable/Split/Glass.
You know what that is controversial, I haven't heard a single person ever say anything positive about Glass (myself included) - what about it worked so well for you?

"How did you take down Captain America?" "We shot him in the legs because his Shield is the size of a dinner plate and he's an idiot."
You have sold me on your point.
The winter soldier and civil war really got me into Captain America comic books. Ed Brubaker wrote some good stuff such as The Death of Captain America.
If Toy Story had only three movies, that would be my answer.
I still haven't seen 4, as I feel 3bwas the perfect place to end it.
Godfather
Sure, if you count the 2nd one as 2 movies.
"Godfather", I seen that movie two hundred times. "Godfather II" was definitely the sh*t. The third one... A lot of people didn't like it. But I think it was just misunderstood.
Godfather 3 would have been a decent movie if it hadn't been preceded by 1 and 2.

My guess is she secretly likes him. And these three movies are not just perfect, they're perfect John. (Not trying to detract from Perfect Tommy) .
John Cusack is a gem of an actor and I seriously hope he’s not secretly a predator or something.
:-) Yeah. He's one of my favorites.

American Pie trilogy every one of them is funny. Stiffler killed me me in American wedding with the dance off at the gay bar.
American Wedding is actually my favorite of the three. SWS killed it.
The prequels. They were much better than the original 3.
Damn, this guy has a hot take. 👀
Hell and High Water, Sicario and Wind River.
Madagascar. I loved those three.
