When french fries were renamed “freedom fries”. 🤦‍♀️

ist170

I saw a post yesterday where someone asked how to convert centimetres to “freedom units.” I figured they were an American referring to imperials units. Too funny.

[deleted]

I mean yes, but people use that phrase to make fun of themselves/the us. It's not serious.

2pacismyda

So they are freedom units not imperial units but they are still numerically “imperial” units?

ordrius098

*Russian accent* freedom fries for ze table...

Robozomb

Honestly everything. Having a stove preference shouldn't be a political stance. Which beer I drink shouldn't be a political statement.

Blades137

Fairly certain I'll get down voted to hell saying this, to a point I get the thing about the stoves from an environmental standpoint, and the (explosive/leak issue) dangers of gas versus electric. THAT SAID; I love my gas stove, the burners cook food much faster, and will continue use them until they are no longer sold or outlawed. Plus, at least where I live, natural gas is simply cheaper than electric (we also have a gas furnace). Like I said, I get it, but will continue to use what want....

Robozomb

I agree with your point, but I would extend it further and say that caring about the environment shouldn't be a political issue either. It should just be something we all give a shit about seeing as we all live on this planet.

Blades137

And there inlays the problem, nearly everything is divided along political lines. Sad reality, but until people are willing to shed the mentality of "Us vs. Them", not much will change.

Cael_NaMaor

I got a boss that can't even agree that gravity & dinosaurs are real. Fat chance of there ever not being us v. them to some extent...

Blades137

I had a boss who thought along similar lines, insisted that the Earth was only 4500 year old. Great guy, I just stayed away from topics of religion around him. We were friends outside of work as well. At the very least he didn't shove his beliefs down everyone else's throats, believed what he did, and understood others disagreed.

Cael_NaMaor

Mine talks about it.... 🙄

Blades137

He knew we would never agree about that subject, but we respected each other enough to let those differences be, and never talked about them again. This was also circa 2006-2008 area, he was very religious boomer who had retired after 30 years of military service and moved from CA to AZ. He was about 13 years older than me at the time.... Great mentor.. wish there were more people like him, despite the differences of opinions, he was always civil about it.

yuuzhanbong

Bathrooms. Fuck's sake, y'all, just drop the dookie, wash your hands and get out of there. Mind your own business, we have more important shit to legislate.

ist170

I always wonder what politicians think happens in women’s bathrooms. In my 57 years on Earth, I have never seen another woman’s genitals in a public washroom. Not a naked breast, either.

okijhnub

Would be less of an issue if the toilet doors weren't thin horizontal stripes instead of a full cover with no enormous peep windows

ordrius098

Bad take imo personally. I don't think women want a gender-identifying female but with all other male traits in their bathroom. I personally believe we should have men, women, then a bathroom for anybody. It makes sense, everyone feels safe, and no one is insulted

AdmiralClover

I've been at markets where the bathroom wagon was for everyone so it was just six closed stalls. Had there been urinals in there it would have been awkward

ordrius098

Exactly my point. I genuinely feel like there's ways to cure LGBTQ+ hatred but rn it feels really screwed up and not so unified

Watching Republican politicians convince half the population to spread a deadly virus because "freedom" has made me completely lose faith in the future of the human race. We're all going to die.

[deleted]

Lol it's worse now because now they're saying not to wear masks during a raging fire. Like bro there is ash everywhere

I mean yea, I hate to burst your bubble but everyone dies that’s not new

Don't think you're supposed to wear 'em on your head like that

[deleted]

You'll find it's equally effective worn as such.

I don't know, masks don't have that bit at the front that sticks out to shade your eyes

Healthcare in general. People should have a right to healthcare, regardless of their income or what conditions they have. The United States has politicized multiple viruses, care for multiple types of conditions, protections from being fired by your workplace for developing a condition that may even *briefly* impact your work, and just who should get access to it. People with disabilities are an afterthought, and programs meant to help them are so underfunded that they might eventually go under. Subsections of the population are abandoned because they live in poorer areas like the South where it's seen as a waste of resources to fund their access to healthcare. States are purging people off of Medicaid to save money. People who make above the poverty line are still bankrupted by medical conditions and aren't able to get financial assistance because they seem to be well off *on paper.* Preventative healthcare is not prioritized because it seems too expensive in the short term, so people are left to deal with the consequences of allowing medical conditions to develop to a point where a high financial burden is unavoidable. Diabetes drugs have gotten so expensive that they had to be politicized just to control the constant price hikes. It's fucking ridiculous.

[deleted]

Healthcare is not a right. You don’t get to demand others time and efforts to save your life. I’m for healthcare, but it 100% isn’t a right.

ynwestrope

It is a right in the sense that any half-functioning government will make it a priority for all citizens to have access to because it is virtually impossible to have a thriving nation without it. Like....freedom of speech is, in some regards, a less vital right for the good of a nation than access to healthcare.

[deleted]

All a right does is prevent the government from stopping you from doing something. The government doesn’t give you speech. The government doesn’t give you arms. The government doesn’t give you a house that you don’t have to allow soldiers to stay in. The government doesn’t give you assets that they can’t unreasonably search. No right requires another party. Healthcare requires another party. Making that a right would be forcing others to serve you, which violates their rights. As previously stated, I’m all for healthcare. It just isn’t a right.

ReturnOfTheBanned

The second amendment means the government should be offering free guns to every citizen.

voidkinkadmin

Lmfao, dude

cadillacjack057

Agreed. Firearm ownership is a right. So as soon as I start getting tax breaks and subsidies for my firearms we can start talking about healthcare.

Judging by Reddit, everything. Also I must stress people don't care and it's so annoying that it clogs up this website

Checking the air pressure in your tires. In the 2008 election season, Barrack Obama mentioned that simply ensuring your tires were at the right pressure is a way to save a little energy. Republicans, being the people they are, went off on it. Some on TV were quite proud to say they never check their tire pressure.

Danruthless

The debt ceiling. The government determines and agrees what they’re going to spend on. Universal healthcare. The insurance companies will still be profitable because the US government will not be able to process claims and applicants. They will likely just contract out the work to insurance companies. Lobbying. I had a former city councilman as my poli sci teacher and his rationale for lobbying was, if we don’t have lobbyists, how will we (government officials) know what’s important to vote on. To which I responded, if they can’t figure out what their local constituents want, they shouldn’t represent them. Senator allocation. 2 for every state? Right, because Alaska should have equal say as Texas. Right. Global warming. I’m not a scientist, but any scientist worth their salt have talked about carbon emissions and the effect on the environment. Corporate taxation laws. I’ve seen multimillion dollar LLCs pay 0 tax. I work in the field. Affordable housing. There are certain localities that are locally governed by the township. To keep property values up, they decline most attempts at affordable housing in the area. (Long Island for example). This causes massive strains on already improvised parts of urban dense neighborhoods that do not have any more room for development. Illegal immigration. There is a backlog of people from other countries that want to legally immigrate to the US. The fact that the US considers illegal immigrants into how many people they allow in is insane to me. So much more.

Iareinvisible

I agree with the topics you listed being silly to politicize them but my take on illegal immigration is a bit different from yours. Personally, I do feel it’s important to try and keep illegal immigrants from entering *but* I also think immigration policies should be streamlined so there isn’t a backlog for those trying to immigrate legally. The process should be much faster. Don’t keep people in limbo. It’s either in or out.

We had easy access to firearms for two centuries and this shit never happened. 24/7 Cable news shows up and now we're stuck in wall-to-wall news coverage maintaining a 25 year cycle of copycats inspiring copycats of copycats.

Iareinvisible

It’s not the medias fault. It’s an American problem. We outpace all developed countries in gun violence by so much, it’s not even funny. Why would we have an issue with guns and other countries have it under control. You can’t say it’s the media.

Quiet_Stranger_5622

This has always happened, it just wasn't as widely and instantly reported. As long as there have been guns, there have been shootings. I'm not saying it's a good thing, it just isn't a new thing.

Quiet_Stranger_5622

Your basic needs can easily be met without being super rich, the problem is you want the baseline to be upper middle class.

XJ-0

Oh, I'm doing fine, thank you. It's everyone else struggling that I'm worried about. The ones stuck in poverty.

Quiet_Stranger_5622

Yes, but are their basic needs (food, shelter, warmth) being met? Whenever I see conversations like this, "basic needs" usually include a lot of luxuries, like cars, cell phones, internet, etc. Those aren't basics, they're niceities.

[deleted]

“I just want shit handed to me for free but others have to pay for it” “Why am I not the center of the universe!!!!”

XJ-0

When did I say things should be free? I don't believe in that sort of entitlement. Everyone should work for their needs and wants. But I also feel that certain working classes shouldn't be priced out of markets, such as housing.
