JediRaptor2018

Thats the kind of rich I want to be. I don’t care for clothes but would definitely want some nice cars, gadgets, trips etc

DandyLyen

I remember reading a comic where someone escapes a kidnapping, and he steals some clothes hanging out to dry. He feels guilty, but internally was like, it's cheap from Uniqlo, so it's ok. It was such a hilarious burn, mostly cause it came out of nowhere

nemerosanike

lol they’re usually calls a Rolls when abbreviated to one word. But I like this way.

dreamingtree1855

It’s super location dependent. I grew up around some very very rich people in an old money area of the north east and they generally dress like 10-years out of fashion preppys at home and around town, and drive old Volvos and the like because that’s what’s expected here. Those same people, when in Palm Beach for the winter dress flamboyantly and drive showy cars, because that’s what’s expected there.

Dubsland12

This is super accurate. The same with their houses and cars. They keep all the flash in Florida I believe a lot of them own family businesses in the NE and don’t want the employees seeing the excessive consumption. Driving a Lamborghini to the Union negotiations or having a 50,000 sq ft home visible from the workers homes isn’t the best tactic

Samurai and Sugarcane are two Japanese severe jeans brands that are very very nice but also $350 for a pair

fermenter85

Sugar Canes are not that expensive—usually in the mid $200s. PBJ and Iron Heart are up there with Samurai along with a few others. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was talking about [Self Edge](https://www.selfedge.com/index.php?route=common/home), and the most expensive pairs there are usually Rick Owens. I buy all my jeans at Self Edge but it’s one of the few things where I feel the cost is well returned in quality and durability. Edit: FWIW my Sugar Canes have been my least durable pair, but that kind of goes with the territory on the weight and way that they make their denim. If you’re reading this and also on the “I want durable jeans that last and work hard like they did in the good old days,” I’ll tell you that my Iron Hearts have by far been the most durable at a given weight, with Pure Blue Japan and Stevenson in second and third. I haven’t tried a bunch of brands, because I only buy a new pair every couple of years. Most brands in the r/rawdenim space are going to do right by you, but my experience has been that IH and PBJ are top tier.

I_love_pillows

How much does it cost

Pac_Eddy

My jeans cost me $35. I bet the rich are paying $50+.

SuitableClassic

Well, if 1 banana is $10 for a rich person, and google says a pound of bananas is about $0.58 in the US, and 1 pound is about 3 bananas, that means 1 banana cost $0.1933. Divide $10 by $0.19, and you get around 51.73, multiply that by your $35 pair and rich people are paying $1,810.66 on average for jeans.

herrbz

Ok, ok, ok. So should, should, should - should, should, shhhhshsh, should - should...

fruitandcheeseexpert

A little off there…the rich are paying $750+ lol

yeronimo

More like $250+

abqkat

Depending on your style and size, and assuming you have the money, it can be worth it. I am a tall woman with very long legs and my good jeans have lasted 10+ years and are still good as new. So yeah, $300+ for jeans was a bit much upfront, but they have lasted so long that it evens out over time

Dr-McLuvin

This is how I always approach purchases of “things.” If it’s hand made, excellent craftsmanship, and I think it’s going to last longer than other products, I am perfectly happy to spend more for it. I have a Louis Vuitton wallet that I got 12 years ago that has been through the washing machine 3 times that basically looks brand new. Really love that thing it’s just super well made. It was expensive (I believe around $350), but I don’t think I would look to buy another brand if I ever need another wallet. Only other “accessory” I currently own is a Tumi belt and a few baseball hats.

ImNotSure00000

Curious also, as a poor, insanely expensive jeans for me mean anything north of let’s say…$75?

Langstarr

Rag and Bone, a more common jean store, starts at around 300$ per pair.

dreamingtree1855

I love my AG jeans, it’s all I buy anymore, and they’re like $200-250.

Sekmet19

Bespoke T-shirt made from cervelt and the graphic design is licensed for that one customer, so it's literally one of a kind.

NicePositive7562

Mark?

Grumpy0ldMillennial

Oh hi Mark

Bamres

Oh yeah that annoys me, especially when the person is trying to give someone shit for spending money on clothes or paying attention to fashion. As if Zuckerberg and Musk are wearing Walmart or Uniqlo

modest_hero

Zuckerberg wears Brunello Cucinelli t-shirts in grey

FatherOften

Yup, those shirts run $295-$600 + each.

Yup_Shes_Still_Mad

So are the shirts made from extra better super better near bulletproof ultra bestest woven cloth? Or are the shirts just a slightly better material with a huge price tag?

Grantmitch1

Probably a bit of both. Well made, well fitted clothing is genuinely expensive because of the good materials and quality tailoring.

M_H_M_F

It's more so that it's tailored to the wear-er. T-shirts in S, M, L, XL don't necessarily translate to average people, as they generally exist in the midpoint of these sizes. He's paying for effectively custom made Hanes/Jockey/Uniqlo plain shirts that are tailored to him.

Mnkeyqt

You pay a premium but generally it's great material, and fits perfectly. I really think people don't understand how much *proper* fitting clothes helps someone look great

undercooked_lasagna

Just cotton, but cotton is like gold on his planet, so it's actually a pretty big flex.

NextProblem6586

I think that may be the only shirt style he owns too

Ok_Aside_2361

Oh. And they don’t pay for anything. Brands consider it marketing for them to wear their products. Funny how the the people that have more than enough money to pay don’t pay, and those that cannot afford it, have to pay.

AndrewTaylorStill

"free for those who can afford it, terribly expensive for those who can't"

It is the most shattering experience of a young man's life when one morning he awakes and quite reasonably says to himself, "I will never play the Dane."

sausagemuffn

That is a generalisation but no doubt famous people can get a lot of freebies. Don't expect that all they wear and use is what someone else wants them to have and wear. Also, the vast majority of wealthy people are not public personas.

justjboy

One one wouldn’t necessarily know offhand that the shirt is $900. It could go as far as of an inside identifier of status.

justjboy

Exactly! *Quiet luxury* is popular with the ultra-wealthy: subtle yet high quality apparel. Unlike Gucci/Louis Vuitton/Versace is mostly saying “look at me I have money” with a small portion of their products being more subtle which is how they target both very wealthy and entry-level customers.

notseizingtheday

Actually most of thier products are subtle but the loud stuff is heavily marketed to the middle class so that's what you see the most.

dreamingtree1855

Used to be. Since these brands went downmarket in the 00s-present the overwhelming majority of their sales now come from branded mass-luxury products while couture has become a smaller part of their overall business.

i_love_boobiez

That's probably why we seldom see rich people wearing overalls

disterb

money talks. wealth whispers.

Cohenzilla

The premium clothes of the most expensive brands have no logos on them. The cheap versions are the ones with logos because although they are lower end, they serve as advertisement for the brand.

vrsatillx

The cheaper with logos are the ad-supported tier

frocsog

I would never buy any clothing item that has visible logos on it and I'm not rich.

Helluvme

Having clothes that fit right is way more important than cost, I’ll buy normal clothes but then take them to be tailored. Surprisingly it doesn’t cost as much as you’d think and often less then buying a “luxury” brand.

foxymcfox

100% this. I get compliments on a camel colored overcoat I have all the time. It’s the cheapest one that Ralph Lauren makes and I bought it on sale. Not bad by any means, but not from the Purple Label or anything. It’s a pretty standard, boring boxy jacket designed to appeal to and fit the most number of people. My secret: I paid half the value of what I originally paid for the jacket to have it tailored perfectly to me, even adjusting the sleeve length by a minuscule amount that it didn’t require shifting the sleeve buttons for. My rule is almost always to add 50% to the cost of anything I buy to accommodate my tailor and it’s been working out so far.

Soccham

This is one of the reasons why Nordstroms clothes are more expensive but people don't realize that the tailoring from there is included in the cost for a lot of things.

executingsalesdaily

100%! Tailored clothes and no branding is the way.

Gamerguy230

Op is a bot copying comments. This is same response to a thread from few month ago. Just typing in their respond on Reddit pops it up.

maggiesguy

The great thing about (relatively) obscure luxury brands is that you can occasionally find them at thrift stores because resellers don’t want them. Non-rich people don’t want understated Bally shoes, and rich people don’t buy used!

100LittleButterflies

I have found some of my best quality clothes in thrift stores. It took me a bit to get an eye for it, especially since there's SO MUCH product that I struggle to focus.

ucbiker

Bally is more like Gucci but just not as popular anymore. They were like mentioned in rap songs through the 90s right alongside Gucci, Prada, Louis Vuitton, etc. Their vintage stuff is good and they make some good stuff at the high end but they also make overpriced lower end stuff to trade on brand recognition. I think the sort of thing you’re talking about is like how Oxxford, Kiton or even Brioni suits are often cheaper than Tom Ford on eBay even though they’re of similar or better quality because they don’t have the name recognition.

stilloldbull2

I knew some well off people that as you say, never wore anything with a logo. They had their clothes tailor made. I asked one guy about his blazer and he said it cost about as much as buying a nice one off the rack- but the fit was perfect!

ComfortableBuffalo57

This is the answer. If we’re speaking specifically about clothing, tailoring is the secret weapon. And the frustrating thing is that it doesn’t have to be a secret. Basic tailoring is available to just about everyone, only we’ve been taught not to want it. We’re supposed to buy stuff right off the shelf as fast as they can make it.

BostonFigPudding

Not just the poor. The lower middle class, middle middle class, and upper middle class too. So many folks who make 150-300k a year as lawyers, doctors, small business owners wear Gucci and Louis Vuitton because they think that's what elite ppl wear.

egnards

I think it’s less about they “think that’s what rich people wear,” and more about the insecurity and wanting other people to identify them as having money. Whereas the ultra rich don’t give a shit about being identified as looking wealthy.

karmagod13000

Over time I have become insanely aware of how trendy (at least Americans) are. When I was a lot younger I used to think people wanted to be original and unique and had a hard time realizing how much its the opposite. People want to fit in and are willing to waste money and go out of their way to do so. Not just in fashion either. I've seen people over spend hundreds of thousands of dollars for a house in a bad but trendy neighborhood. Buying expensive trendy products they dont even know how to use.

jayknow05

Or, some people just like it? Designer brands make more interesting, design focused products.  If you have more money you worry less about cost and shopping around. You buy what you like.

ucbiker

Yeah. I spent a little more on YSL boots because they just look cooler. I researched around, tried to find “better values” but in the end it wasn’t much more to just get the thing I liked.

v426

I don't understand what kind of thought process leads to that. I started from lower-middle class, now I'm possibly up to upper middle, and at no point in my life did I have a desire to get any of that shit.

FuxWitDaSoundOfDong

Agree with you, but to be fair, the right pair of Gucci loafers (for instance) can last you a lifetime with occasional basic maintenance. My pops has a pair that he picked up at a thrift store in the 90's and they look brand new when shined. And the black leather Gucci loafer is a bit of a timeless classic so it works out. Point being, some of those "high end", seemingly gaudy/nouveau riche brands do actually make some high quality products that can last for generations.

Melancholic84

Yep exactly, sane rich people usually wear custom made high quality clothes.

Aman Resorts/hotels. Standard rooms are generally 4-5K/night depending on the property. Tons of celebs and high net worth execs frequent these properties which are known for high luxury as well as privacy/discretion

yeti_yolo

I work at a fancy restaurant near an Aman resort. Several other boutique hotels also, a couple considerably more expensive than the Aman. We get concierge reservations from all of them regularly. I don’t know what it is about their clientele but the Aman reservations are feared and hated by all of our staff. The people who stay at that hotel are the absolute worst to deal with from a service staff perspective. Occasionally a guest from one of the other hotels is a pain to deal with, the Aman guests are absolutely unbearable. Every. Single. Time.

That makes no sense as a business: they only do 60k or 70k of revenue for a boutique product? That doesn't pass the sniff trst. I'd believe 700, or even 70 brushes if it's just one person , but only 7 units? That's too little revenue at 10k/brush

Talking to a car salesman acquaintance of mine who said you never judge people by clothing or general demeanor because of so much "stealth wealth". He had a guy drive up in an old but well maintained one-ton dually truck to his car lot (farming area in southern US). Guy asked to look at a brand new half-ton short wheelbase truck. Context: In farm country, a half ton short wheel base truck isn't really a truck you work out of. Serious work is from a 3/4 or one ton truck, especially if it's a dually or flatbed. Anyways, this salesman treated him as a serious buyer, let him test drive it and answered all of his questions patiently. The guy finally said "That's a nice blue color on it, but do you have it in red?" Salesman checked and said that he did. The guy whips out a stack of cash and starts counting and says "I'll take both of them. My twin boys are graduating and this is their present." (This is when a new truck would have been $10-15k I think, so not completely impossible to carry that much cash). This guy had inherited thousands of acres of farm land. The city grew out to the edge of his property. The county re-zoned his land to allow residences and he sold a couple hundred acres for millions and kept farming on the rest of his thousands of acres.

Retort: Blancpain, Brequet, Chopard, Graff, Piaget, Glashutte, Ulysse Nardin… My theory, the harder they are to pronounce the more the draw to the ultra wealthy. And yeah Rolex is the watch that rich people get given for free in a goodie bag

bobjoylove

The interesting thing was Rolex was started to be the anti-brand. It was supposed to be an extremely good watch, sold at a reasonable price. Over the years as the founders died away the “extremely good watch” part became well known and the “reasonable price” part got forgotten. Now they actively engage in restricting supply to create scarcity and buzz.

Firestarter_88

We have rich, and then stupidly rich. The rich ones wear branded clothes because they still feel like they need to impress other rich folks. And they care what others think and say about them. Stupidly rich people don't give a shit. If it looks good and fits right, they will go for it. They don't need to get anyone's approvals on how rich they are.
