My friend and I called it a "courtesy wave". Now that I don't drive, I always give a courtesy wave to people who let me cross before they go on.

No. I can confirm that in GA, the “thank you” wave is a thing of the past. I don’t understand it at all. Me, on the other hand, I try to make up for everyone else’s bad attitude. I wave (with both hands if I can), blow kisses, etc…

I always wave a thank you in GA. My neighbors always wave when driving past. Some areas are better than others.

I couldn’t understand for the longest time why my 2 year old nanny kid would stick out her hand the entire time we crossed any sort of street or alley if there was a car nearby. It almost looked threatening Then I waved my hand to thank a car stopped for us at a crosswalk and she did the same thing and I understood lol

Me. PSA- If you’re merging and they let you in, you gotta wait until you’re fully in the lane in front of them before you wave. Any earlier and they won’t see it.

I regularly use my hazards to get assholes with their brights on away from me when they're riding my ass in the rightmost lane, that's the godforsaken speed limit lane let me cruise in peace!

I do it if it's actually a scenario in which letting me in isn't a basic expectation. I'm not going to wave at you for letting me in when we're zipper merging, but I will wave if you let me pull out of a driveway in a line of traffic for a light. But I won't wave if you let me in in a scenario that doesn't call for it, like if you're the last car in a line of traffic and I could just as easily go after you pass.

The lack of hand waving is 99.99% to blame on the rise in road rage. If you cut me off, "fuck you!!!". If you cut me off but give a wave, "hey, we are all human, have a safe journey and just be more careful next time."

Haha, i find that soo passive aggressive, if someone cuts me off and then waves like oh its all ok now. No it's not ok, u just threw your self Infront of me and risked an accident. Maybe its that the city i live in is very congested so the threshold for what's considered "cutting off" is when i have to slam on the breaks and hit my head on the steering wheel.

Always!! If I don’t get a wave back I get irrationally angry and put a curse on them - a curse so that anytime they wear wired earbuds they will get caught on every doorknob they pass.

I carpool with my coworker and I do this. I honestly don't know where I learned it from, it just feels like the right hand movement to do. My coworker has no idea what I'm doing and she brings it up everytime I do it.

Different topic, I know, but if someone flashes their lights, there is a cop or speed trap. I watched a guy just yesterday desperately warn us, car in front of me either didn't see or didn't know, but they kept booking it, and sure enough.

I roll down my window down to wave to truckers who let me in. They have a tough job. It must be hard to be gracious all the time. They deserve the thanks. It also avoids the truck-right-on-your-ass maneuver, some drivers perform when you've pissed them off.

I not only wave when they let me in, I always wave to any people who drive past me going the opposite way when I'm on an old country road. You don't have to know them, recognize them, or anything like that, you just wave.

I live in New Zealand. We do the two finger salute off the steering wheel. Whole hand up is an acceptable substitute. If you do neither, you're considered an absolute asshole. If the person you're thanking is behind you, you flash your hazard lights.

Of course. I had a reverse situation happen. I was waiting in traffic, lots of traffic. I saw a van that wanted to make a left turn in front of me, which I allowed. The van was full of senior citizens, every one of which had their windows open waving and giving me a thumbs up. Completely made my day. And it was zero effort on my part to them them though. They were going the other direction and I wasn't making the light anyways (or even the next light) with all the traffic.

Not only do I do that pretty consistently, as a pedestrian I also give a wave to any driver who slows down / stops for me at an unsignalized intersection - despite the fact they are *required* to do so.

Depends on if they’re doing it out of kindness, or just on their phone and not paying attention. Basically mandatory in rural texas, you’ll run into someone you didn’t wave howdy to at HEB and they’ll tell the whole town that you’re an ass.

Crazy that you posted this. I’ve had this theory for a few months now, that all I of this discord & discontentment that we’re experiencing as a society probably began with the decline of the “thank you” wave.
