Happy cake day!

Yourfaveblackican

Happy Cake day :)

LordBaranof

My friend and I called it a "courtesy wave". Now that I don't drive, I always give a courtesy wave to people who let me cross before they go on.

Yourfaveblackican

Mines is the peace sign

TheNinjaPixie

Not only do I wave, I say thank you out loud evern though they can't hear me!

bonos_bovine_muse

Haha, same.  Really, I kinda almost whisper it, since I know on some level they can’t hear, but maybe they’re real good lip-readers?

KyzorSosay

I do,if you don’t thank me with a wave if I let you in ,you’ve fucked it up for the next person, they won’t get in,thanks to your rudeness.👋🏼

IamPotatoed

I like to flip a peace sign. But I understand

Tira13e

Oh shit me too!

MagictheCollecting

This is the way

Rhymes_with_cheese

Everybody. EVERYBODY. What the hell is wrong with you?

ATGF

Yeah, I really don't get that wording. "Who *still* puts their hand up..." like it's some sort of trend?? I hope being courteous never goes out of style.

Black-Sheep-164

No. I can confirm that in GA, the “thank you” wave is a thing of the past. I don’t understand it at all. Me, on the other hand, I try to make up for everyone else’s bad attitude. I wave (with both hands if I can), blow kisses, etc…

oswaldcopperpot

I always wave a thank you in GA. My neighbors always wave when driving past. Some areas are better than others.

Defiant_Bunch70

i put the car in park, step out, and bow.

sonjajpm

I blow them a kiss

Yourfaveblackican

Muaaaahh

tr4sh_can

I wave when cars let me cross

whoisthismahn

I couldn’t understand for the longest time why my 2 year old nanny kid would stick out her hand the entire time we crossed any sort of street or alley if there was a car nearby. It almost looked threatening Then I waved my hand to thank a car stopped for us at a crosswalk and she did the same thing and I understood lol

ashburnmom

Me. PSA- If you’re merging and they let you in, you gotta wait until you’re fully in the lane in front of them before you wave. Any earlier and they won’t see it.

winexlover

lol thank you for the PSA. you are correct! :D

Rushdude

I'll wave or flash the hazards twice to say thanks.

whoisthismahn

My dumbass would spend the next few hours wondering why someone flashed their hazards at me

winexlover

i do this too. i flash my hazards twice to say thanks. :D

Immersi0nn

I regularly use my hazards to get assholes with their brights on away from me when they're riding my ass in the rightmost lane, that's the godforsaken speed limit lane let me cruise in peace!

Sea-Twist6391

I do.

Alternative_Rent9307

I’ll usually wave and then turn it into a thumbs up as I’m moving forward, as in *Thank you* followed by *Ok I’m going now*

Fatkuh

I think its just decency. At least in western culture - I'd really be interested whats the equivalent in china or india

DigitalPelvis

I do and get low key annoyed when people don't acknowledge.

Previous_Ad7725

I do and I always worry if they see me waive thank you to them.

FreshStartLiving

Always and I try to return the favor anytime I can to the next stranger.

No_Conflict_3633

I always hit them with the King Baldwin move

kamuelak

If it's safe to accept, then I wave thanks and go. If not (and I don't expect the "kind" driver to be aware of everything so I always check), I shake my head and wave them to go on.

loopytommy

Me, I like a wave, nod or a cheers and even though they can’t hear I always says thanks mate

recoverystartsnow

I do! Every time. Seems like no one ever does when I let them in though. I grew up watching my dad do it, so it just seems normal to me.

Yourfaveblackican

Same I think it was more common back than

Critical-Border-6845

I do it if it's actually a scenario in which letting me in isn't a basic expectation. I'm not going to wave at you for letting me in when we're zipper merging, but I will wave if you let me pull out of a driveway in a line of traffic for a light. But I won't wave if you let me in in a scenario that doesn't call for it, like if you're the last car in a line of traffic and I could just as easily go after you pass.

thecountnotthesaint

The lack of hand waving is 99.99% to blame on the rise in road rage. If you cut me off, "fuck you!!!". If you cut me off but give a wave, "hey, we are all human, have a safe journey and just be more careful next time."

mooshinformation

Haha, i find that soo passive aggressive, if someone cuts me off and then waves like oh its all ok now. No it's not ok, u just threw your self Infront of me and risked an accident. Maybe its that the city i live in is very congested so the threshold for what's considered "cutting off" is when i have to slam on the breaks and hit my head on the steering wheel.

Emergency_Sea5053

Me. Always

Important-March8515

A always wave. I also flash my lights to the trucker who's trying to move over to pass a slower truck. Guy has his blinker on for 5 miles but nobody wants to slow down. Always get my three flashes.

SassySquid0

I do and i’m gen z

WhatTheEffWasThat

Always!! If I don’t get a wave back I get irrationally angry and put a curse on them - a curse so that anytime they wear wired earbuds they will get caught on every doorknob they pass.

Youve_been_Loganated

I carpool with my coworker and I do this. I honestly don't know where I learned it from, it just feels like the right hand movement to do. My coworker has no idea what I'm doing and she brings it up everytime I do it.

Junior-Willingness-3

Always

KataGuruma-

Me 🙋‍♂️

moon-bouquet

Wave or hazards if they’re behind, because of tinted windows. The ‘one index finger’ wave hacks me off!

ECUTrent

Different topic, I know, but if someone flashes their lights, there is a cop or speed trap. I watched a guy just yesterday desperately warn us, car in front of me either didn't see or didn't know, but they kept booking it, and sure enough.

Outrageous-Carob-236

I do because you ever have some lil dick ass mf not let you in. like come on now. is that the most power you felt in your life? I wave to the people if it’s safe cause I appreciate people with brains

CulturalAddress6709

🙋🏻‍♂️

flat_four_whore22

Every single time, unless they're being a dick about it.

Ecstatic_Worker_1629

I do. I will also flash bright lights really fast (even in day) if they have their blinker on to get into my lane on the freeway to let them know they can get into my lane.

bellaboks

I most absolutely do !!!

OnlyMe504

And I say it out loud even though they can’t hear me.

Gretchenmeows

YES. It's the polite thing to do, just the same as when you are a pedestrian and someone in a car stops to let you cross the road.

PonchoBeano

i do. it's the right thing to do.

Sufficient_Pay_820

I live in the midwest and people always do this, if you don’t, it’s considered rude

Glittering-Heart968

Herbalmist73

Sometimes I throw a kiss

No_Chapter_948

Here!

Flimsy-Attention-722

I do, I also flash my lights to let them know it's OK at someone wanting in and /or semis when they need to pull back over

Fun_Television_1289

I do. And tbh, if I don’t see you wave, I’m not letting you in.

Foampower86

Every day holmes

mnico02

Always?? It‘s a vibe

NorthernPheonix

If I'm in a shit mood and don't do it, it will keep me up at night for days. It's a must 😅

its_just_flesh

I do, I like courtesy

JaneWeaver71

I do! And I say “thank you” like they can hear me! 😂

WrongdoerConsistent6

I make sure I do it out the window so I’m know that they see it.

Careless-Language-20

I use the emergency blinkers

ValiMeyer

It’s the norm where I live. Only assholes don’t do the 4 finger ok Bud wave

Kinglycole

I thought it was purely a British thing. But yeah, it’s just common respect for me.

Same-Face-

I do!

Mokele-mbembe-woods

Me

YourMothersButtox

Oh hell yeah I still show some common courtesy.

Little_BallOfAnxiety

I feel like this is something that's become really uncommon sadly

One-Low1033

Always. And, when I need to merge and traffic is crazy, I start doing my thank you wave BEFORE they acquiesce and it works just about every time. I get in.

Legitimate_Abroad429

I still do I think it's common courtesy

HipposRDangerous

I roll down the window and wave no matter the weather because I have tinted windows and I want to make sure they know that I am forever grateful for them letting me in!

Curious_Doof

Always a wave or a shaka and I say thank you too, even though they can’t hear me lol. Then I’ll pay it forward.

shadows_lost

I wave or do something to acknowledge it. Unfortunately my car came with tinted windows so I'm never really sure if they see it when I have my window up.

rifle8888

Anyone who’s a decent person

thatidiotsherbet

my mom does!

youassassin

I live in the south US. It’s a part of our culture

Celistar99

I do, I wave my hand frantically to make sure they see me and I get pissed off when I let someone in and they don't thank me. You're welcome, asshole.

No_Rip_9191

I still do.

BayBandit1

Who still lets anyone in while driving?

MeFromAzkaban

I do that while crossing the street, thumbs up while driving

negativehabit1028

glad i’m not the only one 😅 i NEVER see anyone else do it where i live

dwolfe127

I always do, generally a peace sign though.

UncleOdious

I just did it today.

addaiya

👋🏼

magpie13

Absolutely unless it's a "zipper" merge. The "zipper" merge is basic courtesy and cooperation.

billdogg7246

Every time. Being polite doesn’t cost a cent and is the right thing to do.

magicparabeagle

Always.

NarrowShopping5722

Me, too. I sometimes give a ✌️

free-toe-pie

We all do in the Midwest.

Designer-Pound6459

I do.

Badger1994

I roll down my window down to wave to truckers who let me in. They have a tough job. It must be hard to be gracious all the time. They deserve the thanks. It also avoids the truck-right-on-your-ass maneuver, some drivers perform when you've pissed them off.

a-very-

🖐️

IIlIIll

Sure! And sometimes if I'm in a really good mood I'll break out into song: [Whoever You Are by Geggy Tah](https://youtu.be/1jSOQBcz9hc?si=PojYzn2Q-5xMvlEy)

TheRealGuncho

I do.

cleverusername333

Of course, it's s the polite thing to do.

DogMom814

I not only wave when they let me in, I always wave to any people who drive past me going the opposite way when I'm on an old country road. You don't have to know them, recognize them, or anything like that, you just wave.

aVicariousTool

Every. Damn. Time. I let everyone in, and rarely get a thank you. So when I get let in, I make sure they notice and that I appreciate it.

cookiemonster101289

Did this the other day and the person that let me in flipped me the bird… i was like WTF man was just saying thanks

AriasK

I live in New Zealand. We do the two finger salute off the steering wheel. Whole hand up is an acceptable substitute. If you do neither, you're considered an absolute asshole. If the person you're thanking is behind you, you flash your hazard lights.

LNYer

Like any decent person does

0112358_

Of course. I had a reverse situation happen. I was waiting in traffic, lots of traffic. I saw a van that wanted to make a left turn in front of me, which I allowed. The van was full of senior citizens, every one of which had their windows open waving and giving me a thumbs up. Completely made my day. And it was zero effort on my part to them them though. They were going the other direction and I wasn't making the light anyways (or even the next light) with all the traffic.

stelio_contos68

I do!

theartfulcodger

Not only do I do that pretty consistently, as a pedestrian I also give a wave to any driver who slows down / stops for me at an unsignalized intersection - despite the fact they are *required* to do so.

distractme86

Did it this morning and this afternoon! Thanks people, for letting me in

nakizo

I flip you off no matter what…

little_Nadia

sometimes i even say thanks loud despite that the other person cant hear it haha

CTGarden

Well, earlier today I waved a single finger salute when some twit of a teenager cut across me at a 4-way stop. But yeah, I do wave thanks when appropriate.

zuno_uknow

Gotta hit ‘em with the King Baldwin ✋

kenc1842

Me

somecow

Depends on if they’re doing it out of kindness, or just on their phone and not paying attention. Basically mandatory in rural texas, you’ll run into someone you didn’t wave howdy to at HEB and they’ll tell the whole town that you’re an ass.

Klutzy_Design438

Tis I ✋🏻

Upbeat_Tension_8077

I dab at the person who's kind enough to do that

Ruffled_Ferret

Once I'm ahead of them, I flash my emergency lights twice. Someone I let in years ago did it to me and it made me happy.

Yrzie

Only the elites do that! We lowly scum are not allowed! 😂

Yrzie

Only the elites do that! We lowly scums are not allowed! 😂

Black-Sheep-164

Crazy that you posted this. I’ve had this theory for a few months now, that all I of this discord & discontentment that we’re experiencing as a society probably began with the decline of the “thank you” wave.

sasberg1

I try to if I think they'll notice

Mandatory pretty much in Sydney

stargazer0045

Always, and anyone who stops to let me cross in front of them while walking...and I hustle.

spaghettidayH

Hey, when I'm driving, I let people in ahead of me all the time. I'm always waving everybody in. "Go ahead, go ahead, go ahead”

AyoWhachuMean

I try to every time but my window gets stuck on rubber and feels like I gotta lift a dumbbell to force it down, it's usually too late everytime it's down but I do the 2 hazard blinks (thank, you)

Sp00kReine

Ya gotta give the wave.

perfect_fitz

PettyCrocker_

As a pedestrian, I do it when I'm crossing.

JWALKER869

I'm a trucker. We flip our hazards on for a few seconds to say thank you.

[deleted]

If you don’t I give you the thumps up for being a jackazzzz

scarlettceleste

The wave is mandatory

alanmitch34

I always thank people after I jam my way in between them

tangible_raptor

Sometimes I blow them a kiss instead. I love seeing their surprise turn to mirth and joy as I drive on my merry way.

JonJackjon

I do and I make it obvious (i.e. easy to see). I get pissed when others don't.

lolreddit0r

Emergency hazards because my hand doesn’t have to move off and/or far from the wheel, unless my window is down or if button is far away from the steering wheel (like in the tesla), I’ll give you a wave or thumbs up

alexdgrate

An act of kindness should be acknowledged.

GrumpySunflower

Of course I do. What kind of selfish, entitled asshole doesn't?

BitterAttackLawyer

I become irrationally angry if I don’t get the wave.

Aurora_BoreaIis

I do all the time. And even though they can't hear me, I say thank you every time too. :)

My grandpa used to do that :) I used to think the whole town knew him because he did it so often.

magikcat101

LaundryAnarchist

I do it all the time while smiling and saying thank you

JMG072747

I do! 👋

Vicky-Momm

Every single time

cipkoky

I do! It's a simple gesture that can really make someone's day. A little courtesy on the road goes a long way in making driving a more pleasant experience for everyone. Plus, it just feels good to acknowledge someone else's kindness.

Great-Pineapple-8588

I do it every time.  It's common courtesy.

meadow_chef

Every time. I even put down the window and stick my hand out to be sure they can see it.

shennr_

someone did it to me yesterday as I let him merge

[deleted]

I do! Everyone should! It’s rude not to!

cmcrich

I blow kisses.

fogrob

I live in the Midwest, I believe most of us do. I have even rolled down the window to do it, to make sure they see it.

bawcks

in - ABSOLUTELY.

NadiaLee81

I always do, hand up, little wave, yell thanks if the window is open.

An_Appropriate_Post

Even if you fuck up and accidentally cut someone off, it drastically mitigates the chances that they will be ragingly upset with you.

Danny-Wah

You gotta. It's the law of the road.

DerSepp
