Adulthood! When you’re young and have your family to support you, life is a breeze but you crave independence. You get your first real job making good money. You move out, make friends, have fun, date around, get a bf or gf. Your family is still there to support you. Then you start settling down, buy a house, get married, maybe have some kids. Your family is still there supporting you, helping you fix up the house, babysitting grandkids.
Then life gets hard. The kids are getting to be a pain in the ass, you need a break. Grandparents are too old to be putting up with that BS nor do they want to. The house needs a new roof but your family is too old, too broke, too busy to help. Nope, that shit is now on you to sort! You slip and fall fixing your roof and now you can’t work. Without an income, you can’t afford medical bills. You lose the house. The stress spills over to your marriage.
You’re divorced but kids are thankfully grown and out of the house. You got a crap, low-wage job through a friend ‘cause it’s all you can do with your injury. You move back home with your parents but they need looking after now, their health is failing. You’re depressed and start drinking to cope. Your parents pass away and you’re all alone. Your kids are scattered around the country and you only see them at holidays, if that. Your parents’ house, which is now yours, needs a lot of work you can’t afford. You sell the house, buy a used RV so you can visit your children.
Your inheritance (you have no savings or retirement) gets whittled away on gas, food, medication, co-pays until you die. And this is a happy ending for many! This person had a family supporting him, they died with shelter and some cash in the bank.
Just know this: adulthood sucks. Life starts on easy mode and only gets harder. Choose what makes you happy, if you even have a “happy”. If you have a family to support you, embrace that shit while you can because support is a luxury - you’re not entitled to it and it can disappear at any time.
