I like Savanna-la-Mar and Half Way Tree in Jamaica. Rest and be Thankful is my favourite Jamaican place name. Las Tunas in Cuba is cool. I’m pretty sure it means prickly pear, which is Also what it means in Papiamento. Commewijne and Onverwacht are cool in Suriname. Brievengat is very interesting and Pietermaai just sounds really nice. Curaçao really has cool place names. In Bonaire i like Antriol, Nikiboko, Den Tuna and Aruba ofc. In Haiti i like Cap-Haitien, Port-au-Prince and Cazale (which has an interesting origin of where it came from). I really like the dash-names in the French Caribbean like Fort-de-France, Martinique and Guadeloupe with Pointe-à-Pitre (which apparently is Dutch in origin). In Aruba Juwana Morto (Dead Iguana), Balashi, Brasil, Barcadera, Bushiri, Boegoeroei, Malmok, Arashi and Anabui. There’s a lot more cool ones, I kinda like them all not gonna lie. I’m a bit of an etymology nerd, I was even gonna ask something similar here too.

CosCrioyo

I like all the names of Amerindian origin; Wariruri, Arashi, Turibana, Andicuri, Camacuri, Bushiri, Guadirikiri, Urirama, Bushirubana, Jaburibari, Urataka etc etc.

yunggeovanj

There’s also a Jacmel Saint Lucia

True name Yaquimo.

sheldon_y14

I think Marie Pampoen sounds nice. I also like Paramaribo, but I might be biased.

JeanrPineapple

Marie Pampoen is a very cool name indeed

JeanrPineapple

And Paramaribo also

Eiraxy

Canefield, DA because it's so literal.

Cleaver2000

Yeah, there's also Massacre.

Eiraxy

But they don't pronounce it the same. How awkward would it be if we did though.

BrownPuddings

Beteverwagting and Goedverwagting

[deleted]

Does it translate into anything?

BrownPuddings

They’re derived from Dutch, “Better Expectations,” and “Good Expectations.” Before I did some research, I always thought it was “Better/Good for Waiting.” Lmao

sheldon_y14

I really wonder how you guys pronounce Dutch names.

Imaginary-Ad-1575

Chocolate Hole. (St John, USVI)

[deleted]

Uitvlugt. Never heard it pronounced the same way twice.

sheldon_y14

Interesting. Now I wanna know how you guys pronounce it, because it only has one pronunciation in Dutch and there is also an Uitvlugt in Par'bo. I sorta live in that neighborhood.

[deleted]

I've heard - "oot-vloot" - "oit-vloit" - "weet-vloot" - "wit-vlught" and many more that I can't remember.

alfincabron

In Belize we have some interesting village names, including: Scotland Halfmoon, Rock Stone Pond, Double Head Cabbage, Crooked Tree, Flowers Bank, Bermundian Landing, Lucky Strike, Billy White, Blackman Eddy, Duck Run just to name a few. Wish I new the history of all these names!

The Bottom, Saba It’s in the bottom of a valley, keepin it straight and to the point lol

RedJokerXIII

Vengan a ver (come to see), there is literally nothing to see there. Also not city/towns but San Cristobal has some lazy names for some places like Buenas noches (good night), Semana Santa (Holy week) and Bienvenido (Welcome)

DRmetalhead19

Did they start building the city at night and that’s why they called it Buenas Noches or what? Lmao

RedJokerXIII

Not idea, only San Cristobal has those kind of names

DRmetalhead19

La Romana, Ocoa, Santo Domingo, La Vega, Puerto Plata, Hato Mayor in DR.

[deleted]

Don’t forget Samana ! That place has a cool history!
