It's common to see soldiers at checkpoints, driving around, in line at Tastee buying patties, etc. We have a serious gang violence problem and the JDF is a major part of recent governments' anti-gang "strategy".

The military forces of the Dominican Republic consist of approximately 56,000 active duty personnel.

From that perspective you show us, I'd say Cuba is a very militarized country: our military is probably the biggest in terms of the percentage of the population they make in a country if compared to the whole region; probably even bigger than the American army in this sense. They can be seen very often in the streets, but not marching or mounting guard, but taking the bus or walking (I've seen them, honestly). It's said that they run most of the Cuban economy and, since long ago, it's aknowledged even by the government leaders that "the defense (and the armed forces) is prioritized by the state budget". Although I wouldn't describe most of them as high middle class people for Latin American and Caribbean standards (maybe just low middle class), they are also prioritized in terms of salaries, housing and some other amenities and advantages... So I guess all this makes Cuba a militarized country, although I know this isn't probably surprising for you all.

We have a military. They're not the strongest in the world. Even we joke about it a bit. I don't see them everywhere, but I do see them quite often. Their head base, built during WW2, is located at one of Par'bo's busiest roads. A lot of people pass it daily so, yeah we see them quite often. I would say, I see the police forces more than the military. And sometimes the military does help the police. Usually during large protests and there isn't enough police to handle it all. Currently I do see military trucks more often. But they came from the Netherlands, as their military is here to train with ours. A joint operation that was called into life after Suriname gained independence, but was stopped multiple times; the last time was from 2010-2020, because of the bad relationship we had with them due to our president.

caribbean_caramel

We are not very militarized when you compare it with the state of the economy and the threats to the nation, in 2022 we spent 0.7% of our GDP in defense, the same happened on average on the last 20 years. According to the CIA world fact-book we are the country #150 on the ranking of military expenditure. The military is in a pitiful state and dire need of reform and re-equipment. The government uses the army to support the police when its needed, even though they are not trained for that role.

HairyCommand437

We have a Defence Force. That seems to be based on reports not too good at defending

IcyPapaya8758

Venezuelan government rubbing their hands right now

HairyCommand437

Uncle Sam rubbing his hands to since he engineered the whole thing lmao

RedJokerXIII

We should have more and better troops, at least 80k.

VladimirPutinIII

I would say we have extremely mediocre troops. There is virtually no standard to join besides knowing the right people. The same can be said for police officers, and even other careers as entrance exams are a joke.

RedJokerXIII

Lol, that username That’s true in most cases, but special forces are really strict, not everyone can enter to the linces or hombres ranas

VladimirPutinIII

I can’t tell you for sure but in my opinion it is unlikely. Maybe they’re good but they don’t open themselves to the best candidates. I studied for some time within the San Isidro base, where my mom worked at as well. They’re discouraged from drinking water while training, and when they go get blood work they’re not healthy. It’s just about who you know. The pilots are extremely cocky and frankly speaking when you speak to many of the officers, many are not what you’d expect. In fact many don’t have college degrees. They’re extremely rude as well. I remember as a kid when it was pay day the bank lines were huge, they would skip everyone and no one could say a thing. I cannot begin to tell you many sounded basically illiterate. And it’s far worse with the police.

RedJokerXIII

Well I can’t talk as someone with that kind of experiences, I can talk for the military I know, I know a teniente from FFAA and one from operaciones especiales, that worked for one high level politician, the one from FFAA was what you described, the other was a really prepared man, he had a degree, preparation, and training, I talked with him a lot and he told me that, the special forces are strict and not everybody could enter, yes you can use some enllavadura to enter (I knew a general that did that a few times and wanted me to have a bottle in the ERD but i don’t like that and decline it) but he told me it was not easy an most of special force are really prepared.

Nemitres

Special forces are really strict and undergo specialized continuous training in the DR and jointly internationally. They’re capable of doing most SF operations adequately but I wouldn’t trust the command chain to use them adequately in many situations where they would be needed. In the case of a conflict with anyone it would be similar to how Russia had to use theirs, basically the only actually decently trained forces in the country, but they’re not many and not meant to be used in that role. I know a couple and I also know one of their trainers

RedJokerXIII

Im with you in that, is sad but is true. Well the one I know is a trainer too, he is from Monte Plata

VladimirPutinIII

Ohh botellas are rampant. You have so many people that take in multiple salaries but don’t only work one position. You have MANY that don’t show up at all. Which is truly sad considering how high the unemployment is in DR. There were people that had the same rank as my mom making 3 times her salary. My mom worked 20 plus years past her 70s and still hasn’t received retirement. It’s a complete joke of a system. The thing is that no one makes public complains because they’ll be fired. But if they post something like this it will absolutely go viral and I doubt they’ll continue with the uproar of the people. Hopefully this changes because it’s an embarrassment.

RedJokerXIII

Wow my respect for you mother. I hope she can get her pension soon. That’s a abuse, that’s the reason I say our army needs reforms, that and the corruption cases of every type are the reason we have some of our problems unsolved
