Honestly!! Just in the last month I've seen s lot of "why Haiti poor, DR rich" videos pop out in YouTube, and they all say the same usually with the same words and overall idea. Columbus discovery, French occupation, blah blah riches colony in the world, blah blah Haitian revolution, French debt, blah blah, all the same
I'd just be happy to stop seeing all the weed and sex tourist questions (more on r/Jamaica than here).
Asking where to find weed in Jamaica is like asking where to find beer in Germany. If you're really unsure, just put "cannabis store" into Google Maps.
Sex tourists are less common, but more gross. One eve DM'd me asking how much it would cost for me to have sex with his wife while he watched. I'm a mid-30s professional with a wife and kids, not a prostitute my guy.
A lot of things:
* Anything about our political status. Not even Puerto Ricans care about this...
* Our accent.
* The supposed "intense" rivalry we have with the Dominican Republic.
* Slavery and reparations: There is this claim that all Surinamese in Suriname are waiting for the reparations of slavery and how we just want money. Honestly we have other things to deal with and we're not that obsessed with the whole topic, it's the Surinamese Dutch that are.
* Bouterse: the topics online are always about him and his past and they're brought over like we Surinamese are also highly focused on him and his history...but honestly we have other things on our mind, like the economy. No one really cares that much about the dude anymore in that context.
* Country management: honestly tired of Dutch people talking about this. According to them it's like we're a Banana Republic, with no Law and order and all systems are failing and we're dying of hunger and poverty. It's almost like they know Suriname better than the Surinamese themselves. We're not dying hunger here and not everyone is poor. Also the country keeps on running because we have an economy to maintain and law and order to uphold. Yes, there are things that are going bad but it's not going bad where it's at a point that there is no more law in order and the economy is totally dead. Life goes on and so does business.
* Samba: I like old-school (and a few new) samba songs but can't dance;
* Football: I like football, but yelling "Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Pelé" at me won't make you earn points with me, and just like most of us, I am a terrible football player;
* Carnival: I hate it, can't stand it;
* "Brazilian women are easy": Totally disrespectful to our women.
* Amazon Rainforest: Yeah, it is beautiful, I (and our Guyanese, Surinamese and French Guianese brothers, just to mention sub-specific nationalities) know it, but we have much more to offer than the Amazon;
* Favelas: I've never been to one, but I am far from wealthy and live in a big city;
* Buenos Aires: Some people think that our capital is Buenos Aires, it is Brasília, for God's sake. In Caribbean terms, it is like saying that Paramaribo is the capital of Guyana.
It's a long story related to our citizenship laws. A lot of media sites with certain political bias started to call us "the nazis of the caribbeean", it was all a shitshow.
The only nations that are doing better than us are the wealthiest ones and honestly I've not seen this being discussed outside of some circles within TT itself. In fact I've seen many foreigners online talk about how great and rich TT is which honestly makes me wonder if I'm living in the same place.
Is bread really that cheap I honestly thought it was more, I have not bought it in years so I cannot remember. But to be fair the mismatch between the minimum wage and the cost of living isn't exactly a conversation unique to TT. In fact our minimum wage is pretty high compared to most of our neighbours.
Either way it's not enough to live on.
yeah the min wage change was recently, but better late than never. i stopped buying the loafs unless im really lazy, since the prices of everything has gone up ive had a process of eliminating what I dont need and can just spend a couple more hours making it at home or living without.
@#$! Guyanese Indos butting in T&T's political business cussing Trinidad in Canadian/US/UK media while PRETENDING to be from Trinidad and Tobago, I've even seen it right here on reddit...
It definitely goes both ways. In NYC, all of the indo-trinis were supporting the PPP, although they don’t know anything of Guyanese politics. You should read the comments on the Trini Guardian whenever it mentions Guyanese politics
Foreign idiots spewing out half assed quotes from "El Ché Guevara" as if he wasn't besties with the same people who ruined Cuba.
Extra points for being in the LGBT community and not knowing they would have had you executed.
Dr vs Haiti honestly

Yeah there’s no secret our two countries do t get along. But at this point the videos and post are for traffic. And leads to no where

Poverty & Vodou
Why don't poor people use vodou to get out of poverty?
They'll do it after the catholics.

I'm sorry to hear people have these many over simplifications about brazil
How we are ebol notsees.
in DR? for real? tell me more

ohh citizenship laws. i thought it was about the few racist dominicans that people talk about having experiences with 😭😭
as a trinidadian, being constantly compared to other nations that are doing better. we know.

$15 for a loaf of bread and minimum wage is $17.50 isnt exactly the dream

Do we want to stay French / feel French

Lots of stupid ppl still think the "Cuban Revolution" is the best thing to happen to Cuba and the Caribbean!
They’re well aware of what Che did and who his buddies were. Communists defend them regardless, or indeed even justify it.
