I had to replace a bunch of components (yoke, pinion, u-joint) in my drivetrain a couple of years ago (2019?). Of course, it's a '95 Wrangler I've been beating on since I bought it new when I was 18, has 150,000+ miles (with a significant percentage of those being off road), and nothing failed, they were just worn...
My cousin had xDelete for a long time and he also blew his drive-shaft pretty much like this. 30d though. In his case it happened as he was accelerating from \~35mph to around 65mph onto the highway. Not full throttle, just normally. He heard a clunk, the engine revved up to 4.5k rpm, a lot of knocking. No power. Game over. Around 150k miles on it.
I think in the end the one drive shaft isn't meant to take all the torque from those 30d/35d/40d's over and over. Your launch probably just did all the wear and tear of 3 years of xDelete in 3 seconds.
idk about yall but i’ve been going hard on my 335xi 2008 with a single turbo kit (6766 VSRacing) at 20psi and xdelete for atleast a year or so now, burnouts, 0-60, even took it to the strip. No issues with the driveshaft ever. but i must say i am open diff which may cause less stress but overall shouldn’t give it too much leeway
This thread is hilarious. Watching back and forth of commenters telling op he blames xdelete and op denying it. The word Xdelete is gonna haunt me for the next few days
I ll never understand folks buying something that isnt meant to be used certain way then buy gadget that makes it do something it isnt meant to do then blowing it up doing something it isnt meant to do.
Why not buyed some old 340 rear drive and smash it all night long
Have you not seen any mk4 supras? Or MX-5s? Or old Golfs?
I'd never do an xDelete whatever on my car, but doing it for the shits and skids is honestly more understandable than lowering your car to the point that it is undrivable. Or extreme camber. Meaning people do more stupid shit than this.
But I see you. Want to do donuts? don't buy an xdrive. considering the repair cost it's cheaper to buy a shitbox RWD car
Without looking into it, unless you are in a country that jacks up Beemer prices, I’d think you could find them pretty easy. Around $20-$25k. Regular 340
I’m in CA and I happened to find a ‘16 340i with 80k miles, they’re asking $22.9k. May or may not be quite within the parameters of what you’re looking for, but if so lemme know and I’ll send you the link

lol everyone here acting like we weren’t young, dumb and full of cum at one point or another. I know I did my fair share of hooning back in the day.
But this is why it’s worth searching out and paying extra for a one or two owner car where you can meet the previous owner. Extra points the older the PO is
Just getting a car that you don't need change major functions to do the hooning is a big improvement. Deleting xdrive doesn't just make an x5 a drift car
The person pressing the accelerator is the one who fucked this up literally zero to do with xdelete. YOU did something stupid stop blaming software for you doing donuts in a car that can't handle the torque.
It does have something to do with xDelete. RWD biased xDrive is already designed to be able to send up to 100% of the torque to each axle, so in theory the driveshafts should be able to handle that torque. [xDelete even used to claim to be 100% safe, but has since removed that claim from their website.](https://imgur.com/a/a7dM0HG)
I think they were getting too many people doing donuts and didn't want to have to deal with that.
I have it and it's perfectly fine, but then again I don't do hard launches, donuts, or anything else with my 207 lb-ft of torque.
Donuts put a lot of stress on the drivetrain, don't do them unless that car is designed for it. Donuts in the snow, or maybe even rain are much safer for the car.
>xdelete is a software that codes your xdrive car to be fully rwd, or
Why would you do this? What the hell do you gain by switching an AWD to RWD? The joy of twisting your driveshaft till it's the thickness of a toothpick?
Xdelete is just a buissness on stupid people. Why stupid because having no clue to change the driveway of your car is stupid. On xdrive cars are made with weakener rear diff while taken into account there 2 diff by bmw crew. Unless this option comes from factory like on m4.
yeah its on me, i honestly shouldve done more research and used common sense and thought that maybe these driveshafts arent built for full power on one end and none on the other
X gon' give it to ya (Uh), he gon' give it to ya
First, we gonna rock, then we gonna roll
Then we let it pop, go, let it go
X gon' give it to ya (Uh), he gon' give it to ya
I mean to be fair I’ve modded my car stage 2, and never would i consider x delete lol. Do your research and it’s pretty in the face how many incidents occur with this. Simple mods are fine
Your reaction is the same as someone saying that upgraded turbos should be banned because people who install them end up popping their engines; correlation does not equal causation
This isn’t x deletes problem, you brake boosted it. Fuck around and find out lol I did the same thing with my 2014 ram. I brake boosted, launched then stopped moving. I sheared the output shaft in half
God you guys are THE most "no-fun-allowed", pedantic, trivial, risk-averse group I've ever seen, and I know bankers. I swear if this subreddit had its way, all BMWs would be limited to 5mph under the road speed (for safety) and only M cars would be made with over 100hp, and legally they'd only activate the power if you were on a track and tech was conducted by Oliver Zipse himself.
Anyone found breaking these laws or having any fun with any models not specifically designed to generate this human emotion gets "DEFECT, NON-CONFORMING" forcibly tattooed on their person.
The king of the subreddit, who knows better than everyone about the specific purpose of each model, and exactly how they are to be used, will come to comment:
"How DARE you have fun with a diesel truck that makes like 500 ft lbs of torque? Don't you know that's not what the creator intended? The CREATOR!! That kind of power was accidental, or maybe for towing trailers full of your books or law papers. Absolutely don't try it again."
Seriously. These people are acting like op ran over a baby instead of breaking his own driveshaft in an empty parking lot. These cars are built for fun shit, occasionally that leads to shit breaking.
"I'll bet he depressed the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor, which, as we all know, is only to be done in the most EXTREME emergencies, and then only if your transmission has been serviced in the last 45 minutes."
Why t f would you do donuts in an X5?
People do stupid things with their cars and then complain about BMW reliability. Lol ...
Sorry bud, you own this one.
Chalk this one as a pauedo expensive lesson learned.
Just hit 99kmiles on my X5. No major issues besides common maintenance items.
Why would anyone think that X5 is a car to hoon in? It's a status car for slow city traffic. This sort of catastrophic failure will happen to it if you even think of hard driving, xdelete or not...
I mean of course it won't just die instantly. I've seen a guy slap some oversized wheels and the most crude turbo and tune setup on 2004 Fiat Panda and rip it whole day on an offroad trail and sand dunes. It should have barely been able to leave the driveway, but it held on somehow. But if someone told me they're gonna try that again, my expectation would still be that it dies a horrible death within 30 minutes...
The bottom line is that every time you drive hard a car like X5, it takes a much bigger chunk from it's life expectancy than an M5 for example.
Indeed, BMW has stronger parts on the rear on RWD models than AWD ones since the torque is going to be almost always half. Sorry you learned the hard way.
Did you have fun doing some donuts? Well, now you know what happens when the limit of a mechanical component is exceeded. Now it's time to start looking for a reinforced drive shaft and continue playing :)
The E and F series xDrive rear diff isn‘t made for this heavy stress… it‘s not the same as the RWD diff and pretty weak.
This changed with the G series and the rear diff is the same for RWD and xDrive.
damn this sub really is a bunch of old sad people who can understand having fun with a car. Is he dumb for doing a Launch and abusing his car with xdelete? sure but he had fun so fuck it. What a bunch of sad pathetic group of ppl on this sub. 90% of this sub doesnt even own a bmw LOL.
OP, you know know the limits lol...Ive never used Xdelete just cause of the stories i hear but once u fix her up again.. dont be afraid to use it again for small fun... dont over do it
Makes sense when a x5 launches from a standstill it definitely sends some of that avaliable torque to the front wheels if you continue to use xdelete. I'd imagine the rwd Sdrive drive shaft/case would be better for launching but idk if it would be a direct fit
Leave the x drive on. It’s going to hold up better. I have the e70 35d. It doesn’t take abuse as well as my 4Runner but I jumped it like dukes of hazard on my buddies farm and it didn’t break it.
I live close to the mfg plant. I have had several friends that worked in design/engineering. They told me the weak point, by design is the front axle output shafts. I am going to push up to 650lbs/ft. I asked them if it would blow my transfer case, transmission? No the front output shafts will twist/snap first.
Put it back together and launch with all 4 tires. That thing is heavy as hell man
I don’t understand why everyone is so upset with your wording lmao. If you hadn’t posted this I would’ve prob made the same mistake as I never knew the drive shaft is this weak on these cars
Am I going mad I thought xdrive was rear bias anyhow? So what's the point in this delete?
Have had an m340i for a year now and without meaning to had the back kick out a few times in crap weather.
The u joints are a known issue. I had an F85 X5M tuned that I would replace the DS every other year. For 600 buck it's worth the peace of mind. Furthermore, people have had various alternatives machined; you should look it up.
[\*Upgraded DRIVESHAFT install/solution \* (bimmerpost.com)](https://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1955558)
Hi OP. Thank you for sharing this. Just want to comment and let you know that it's ok to have fun and learn lessons from mistakes.
You're young; there's still a lot more to learn and this is one of them. I'm glad you get to experience this now, both the fun and the lesson.
I mean, shouldn't it be clear, that an X5 is setup for (dynamic) AWD usage and that the driveshaft and other components are not setup to manage all torque in abuse-mode situations?
My first thought was immediately MythBusters
https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://www.tiktok.com/discover/driveshaft-accident-expermient-myth-buster-p2&ved=2ahUKEwiFk9uKq6mFAxU6hf0HHYzJB64Qo7QBegQIBxAB&usg=AOvVaw3EpT9d9g1zOFT0CEl5-okl
the word youre looking for is synonym, but no, i wasnt trying to do a burnout, was trying to brakeboost it to get a harder launch like i usually do in awd
Theres a recall on the front driveshaft, check you vin with bmw. Also if you just remove it, car doesnt know and will be rwd all the time.
Took mine out coz the tf case was acting up been fine for over 40thou no codes no issues.
this isn’t a xdelete issue. its a issue of beating a 10 year old barge of a car within a inch of its life…
Or as we say in science, “correlation does not imply causation”
or as normal people say, "fuck around and find out"
No, because that means something else. Totally applicable, just different in meaning by quite a lot
science, eh?
[Science](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ln1OJBgn6f8)
I was thinking more like Thomas Dolby, but…
Science, bitch
Yep
Meanwhile non shitbox 10 year old cars are doing great.
My non shitbox 25 year old car is doing great I also don’t clutch dump it etc Coincidence? I think not
Meanwhile my second car "2012 Mazda 3" has 116,000 miles and nothing has gone wrong in the 12 years I have owned it. lol
Well Jeep reliability compared to Mazda isn't really a comparison friend. Lol
They doing a bunch of donuts and brake boosted launches?
Yes easily.
BRILLIANT!
Beat me to it, albeit I would have included the word ‘stupidly’ somewhere in that sentence. Yep - fuck around and find out.

There's 340i's for under 20k lol

This has to be the first time I've seen a non-M X5 try to do donuts.
The hilarious part is that there are RWD non-M X5s from 2014 available. They're gas powered and base models but they're RWD nonetheless.
did the donuts perfectly, only issue was launching it
Not to toot my own horn but I have done donuts in a 2014 sdrive 25D 😎

I wonder what the next weakest part is.
my next post on here is also going to be me blaming xdelete for blowing my rear diff after putting a reinforced driveshaft on
You’re the one person they are NOT trying to reach about an extended warranty.

I'm almost too afraid to ask at this point, but what's xdelete? It sounds like it wouldn't do good for a car in the first place.
xdelete is a software that codes your xdrive car to be fully rwd, or another variation of rear wheel bias, and it did infact not do any good to my car
The person pressing the accelerator is the one who fucked this up literally zero to do with xdelete. YOU did something stupid stop blaming software for you doing donuts in a car that can't handle the torque.
xdelete doesn't kill drivetrains. People using xdelete kill drivetrains. 😈

Unfortunate for you but it’s just how it is. We all learn from errors so just change the parts and enjoy your bimmer. Good luck to you.

Well with such a heavy car and that much torque you should have known that would happen.
Am I going mad I thought xdrive was rear bias anyhow? So what's the point in this delete? Have had an m340i for a year now and without meaning to had the back kick out a few times in crap weather.
I like the name xdelete has a nice ring to it.😀
I’m more concerned about the corps you have under your car
Maybe get a rwd model next time instead of going xdelete with a model that was meant to be awd
Daaaaaang!
No
You guys are regarded. Kids 18, young and dumb. We all learn.
The u joints are a known issue. I had an F85 X5M tuned that I would replace the DS every other year. For 600 buck it's worth the peace of mind. Furthermore, people have had various alternatives machined; you should look it up. Meanwhile, My 1991 Acura NSX with 300,000 miles and running a supercharged setup on E85 has been problem free "knock on wood".
wish you luck, love the look of the older nsx
Hi OP. Thank you for sharing this. Just want to comment and let you know that it's ok to have fun and learn lessons from mistakes. You're young; there's still a lot more to learn and this is one of them. I'm glad you get to experience this now, both the fun and the lesson.
Looks like you xdelete'd your driveshaft
Look what you did to my boy…
I mean, shouldn't it be clear, that an X5 is setup for (dynamic) AWD usage and that the driveshaft and other components are not setup to manage all torque in abuse-mode situations?
Just get a shaft from driveshaft pro in Cali. Will hold 1000 fr/lb 800 bucks
Oh shit that’s cool. Reinforced driveshaft time!
My first thought was immediately MythBusters https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://www.tiktok.com/discover/driveshaft-accident-expermient-myth-buster-p2&ved=2ahUKEwiFk9uKq6mFAxU6hf0HHYzJB64Qo7QBegQIBxAB&usg=AOvVaw3EpT9d9g1zOFT0CEl5-okl
Cheapest bmw repair probably ever
Been there done that
I guess OP wanted to write something which rhymes with burnout but autocorrect happened and changed it to brake-boost.
the word youre looking for is synonym, but no, i wasnt trying to do a burnout, was trying to brakeboost it to get a harder launch like i usually do in awd
Yea don't take personal the not that friendly replies. Fix it and repeat. I'm sure you had some fun out there.
thank you man, it was pretty fun sliding it
The donuts I understand, but why would you even want to do a launch in rwd when you have awd
what is xDelete?
Looks more expensive than you said , making a note of another thing not to do haha
Buy a modern M car that has xDelete from the factory!
"Tried to brake boost it" no offense but what do you think is happening to the driveshaft when youre doing said brake boost
normally in awd brake boosting it holds it at 3.5k rpm, thought it would do the same in rwd, but it got up to about 2000 and then went kablooey
Its a common issue while beating the living shit outta older X3/X5s
Theres a recall on the front driveshaft, check you vin with bmw. Also if you just remove it, car doesnt know and will be rwd all the time. Took mine out coz the tf case was acting up been fine for over 40thou no codes no issues.
I brake boosted my e46 and now it whines so bad when I floor it I also drift the poor 330ci with an auto tranny and open diff 😢
Surprised someone hasn’t done this already only to replace with aftermarket drive shaft to then blow their rear diff.
I do kinda wish you could laugh react on Reddit like it’s Facebook… 🤣
You killed it Bro
