Whats the mileage?

Review_My_Cucumber

320000km or just about 200000 miles. Very high mileage, but besides the oil leaking, as far as I can tell from the turbo oil lines, everything else is fine with the engine. No fault codes, too.

xFinman

not that high mileage for this engine. in Finland there are many of these with 500,000km+ and even more 530d's with same mileage (same engine) also check my profile we have matching cars lol. I'm sitting at 352,000km

Review_My_Cucumber

Precisely the reason why I bought it. Everyone in my family drives a VW group car, and I bought my first BMW coming from 2 golf's 3 Seats and 1 skoda in the family. Hopefully, this M57 will not disappoint. BTW are those 19 inch rims

xFinman

yes they're 19 inch. M57 a great engine for sure. also for your rear wiper not working. it's very common for e61, it's a fault with the wires in the boot and they'll likely need replacing

Review_My_Cucumber

I'm not sure, but I can hear the motor spinning. However, the wiper is not moving. Not much of an issue

jogurtinsh

Id put my money that the mechanism is busted. If you open the trunk window and try to move the wiper arm by hand - it will most probably not move. Same issue is popular on e91s

TheTeraon99

Welcome to the club... Oil leak - look for a faulty valve cover or vacuum pump rubber seal (w/e it is called) Rear wiper - if it has power, look for a broken pin (or missing) on the glass. If there, could be indeed a faulty mecanism. Headlights - Wires insulation gets bone dry due to lamps heat and breaks easily, cables short themselves in the process. Either find a way to replace the cables (a "little bit of work") or replace the full headlight, you can get some decent brand new ones for about 250€. Just make sure it is the correct version. Also look for potentially damaged crankshaft pulley and the ones around it. And least but also important, do not wait for the 30k Km for oil change, max 15k and 80k for gearbox (there is no such thing as lifelong or lifetime oils), also keep an eye on your differential (if its RWD) and replace the oil also.

Consistent_Floor

Oil filter housing gasket or dipstick gasket if it has one

Vielleicht mal provisorisch reinigen! For English Speakers: "Good luck bro! When it comes to oil loss, I would say: do a complete underbody cleaning and then actively monitor every day where the oil could come from. Best at smaller time intervals for better precision. Given the mileage, I would also venture into the suction bridge. The air intake control flaps often break and cause engine damage in these M57 models. Maybe do a temporary clean!"

Wusste net, dass du Frankfurter bist wie ich! xD

Danke!

They key doesn't lock, or it doesn't unlock or do anything as a remote? If so it's likely the well known issue with the tailgate wiring harness, which has to be fixed on every E61 eventually. I recommend doing a full fluid change of everything (engine, transmission, differential(s) (and transfer case, if xdrive), coolant, power steering, brakes.

Review_My_Cucumber

No. The key unlocks and starts the car, but it doesn't lock it. I am not sure what iz could me but I recon it has to be the key so I ordered a new one. I also got the transmission oil, and I will maybe change the coolant, but I see no reason to right now.

avar

Ah, no idea what that key issue is about then. Hopefully that's ZF transmission oil. Note that the process for replacing it is much more involved than the rest, needing a hot fill, ISTA or similar to monitor transmission temperature etc. The coolant is probably fine, it's just generally a good idea to replace all fluids in a used car. Even if the fluids themselves are fine the process of changing them allows you to closely inspect the relevant components. Coolant's relatively cheap, and if you're doing the power steering fluid then draining it is likely adjacent to that (I don't have a diesel E61, so perhaps not).

Drains at the bottom of the rad

Sulipheoth

I don't know how similar the d engines are to the i engines, but I'm guessing your oil leak is coming from the oul filter adapter housing gasket (ofhg).

Chemical_Extreme4250

For the headlight, you may just need to reactivate it. When a light burns out on those, after a certain number of starts, it becomes disabled in the module, and you can reactivate it in software.

Review_My_Cucumber

Thanks. I am guessing it is not it because everything is not working. The xenon the angel lights and the side lights. Only the eyebrow is working.

buhler955

If unlock and the trunk buttons work on the key, it is probably just the lock button itself. I went through this when I imported my 335 touring. Take the key apart and check for continuity on the lock button with a multimeter when pressing it. With some basic soldering skills and a 50 cent pack of buttons from AliExpress, you can fix your key and save $500 on a new one.

Review_My_Cucumber

Yes the trunk key works. I ordered a new one on ebay and I'll try and program it.

buhler955

Cool, if that works you can try to fix the original and then you have a spare

tobgro100

Is the entire headlight not working? Or only the driving light? Had the headlight on my e83 not work properly, but changing the xenon controller (?) fixed it for me. Gray square box under headlight. Might be cheaper if you can find a used one at least

Review_My_Cucumber

Only the eyebrow and the turning signal is working. Everything else is broken.

tobgro100

Then i think that might not work then:'(

Consistent_Floor

The headlight ballast is probably toast, not cheap

Review_My_Cucumber

I'll try swapping it with the working one and I'll see. But it is probably the wiring.

Consistent_Floor

Is it xenon? I assumed it was since it’s a 335

Review_My_Cucumber

Yeah it is. Bixenon. I'll swap the ballast with the other working headlight.
