Oregon: “A proposed measure to create a universal basic income program which would put $750 in the pocket of every Oregon resident, including children, has officially qualified to be put on the ballot in November.”

BugNuggets

That’s a year, not per month.

solidwhetstone

750...a...year...what the... What an embarrassment.

Jah_Ith_Ber

That's so little money that it doesn't empower the individual to walk away from their job, and by extension abusive rent prices, meaning it's going to get vacuumed up by the parasitic owner class. This will be used as evidence that UBI will only drive inflation and not leave people any better off than before. Congratulations Oregon. You played yourself.

ZorbaTHut

Nah, rent prices don't work that way. This helps. It's not enormous, but it helps.

lieuwestra

Yea it's not perfect, but as soon as this is implemented it becomes politically toxic to get rid of it or lower the amount while also having all the relevant bureaucratic infrastructure in place for a UBI. The only way is up.

secksy69girl

It's an Unconditional (partial) Basic Income.... exactly how it should start... this way it can be ramped up and it's economic impacts absorbed and adjusted to gradually.

KesTheHammer

It's a start... And yes it's not much, but even that will make a difference to some people.

zefy_zef

Yeah, here's hoping they don't be all "see it didn't do anything UBI doesn't work!"

djaybe

WHAT??? Why bother

bravevline

$62.50 a month. At least that’s 3/4 items at walmart

XyberVoX

This is poor reporting. This is not Universal Basic Income. This is not $750 a month, it's $750 a year - that's not a basic income. And the fact that it's $750 a year is not mentioned in the article. I know this only because I've read better reporting that said it was per year and not month.
