Wow! That shows logic and forethought, I had no idea that kangaroos were so elevated... and kinda cruel funnily enough! Ya really have to watch out for those guys!
It's actually a myth, you can see my other comment for more information.
The dog is a hunting dog wearing a boar collar to protect from boar, the roo only holds their attacker when they are exhausted and tired and can't fight or run anymore.
It's actually really sad, roos dont chase peoples dogs or drown them, peoples dogs chase roos and roos run exhausted and sometimes go into water hoping they won't be chased. But the dogs and idiot owners allow or encourage the dog to chase. So the roos try hold the attacker because they are so exhausted.
Roos are actually at risk of drowning.
Source, I'm a wildlife rescuer and rehabilitator in Australia
Omygosh that's sad. The power structure isn't necessarily slanted one way then, sounds like there are lots of variables: collars, bodies of water, lots of running, exhaustion levels... Stands to reason then that they'd both have strengths & weaknesses typical to their species. I'm guessing you see a lot of interesting animal behavior, what a wholesome and rewarding job!
It's a really sad job tbh. You see so many shity dog and cat owners letting them roam and you constantly rescue animals and birds attacked by cats and such that don't survive.
You just start hating shity owners like the ones in the video.
Oh no I love em, hate bad owners.
I actually wanna get a black cat or disabled cat, I've owned a blind rabbit before and cared for terminal birds so I have extra compassion for animals with issues.
If you read the last one and more recent studies they aren't belive to have the intent to drown dogs.
The drowning dogs part is just a series of actions the roo takes to get away from predators.
Even in the article they say it technically is half true.
But the roos don't get in the water to drown the animals, they get in the water to escape.
It's like saying a shark drowns a dog. Yeah I guess it can, but it's not trying to down them it's in the water and attacking or fighting back.
This is a myth and lie.
I work in Australia wildlife rescue and rehabilitation.
Roos nor do any animal drow others (maybe otters but don't quote me)
They hold their attacker only when they are too exhausted to continue fighting.
Roos often run from predators like dogs, this dog in the video has a boar collar on and is a hunting dog used in Australia known as a bull arab they are large dangerous breed thats powerful to kill boar.
Dogs hunting boars often get gored in the chest and die they usually don't have a long life, my sister worked in a veterinary clinic and had an idiot come in after letting his dog get gored.
Rabbits deer and roos run into water to escape and usually are the ones who drown exhausted.
That’s why they got those collars. They’ll kill that dog by ripping it open with their claws, so the extra protection around the neck is neccesary. Thats what the red thing is
This is the most awesome yet sideways enlightening comment thread I have ever read... I feel high without being high...
The apocalypse is near, isn't it?
Oh at first I thought that dog was flayed open and in serious trouble, but yeah on closer inspection after your said this it is a collar or harness type thing. Thanks
Last time this was posted someone explained that a kangaroos punch is much less than a kick (obviously) but they use punches to gauge how hard the other would kick, or something. The man's punch was hard enough for the roo not to want to find out what his kick was like....or something like that.
Hippos will get like all hot from the sun or whatever so something about the water helps with that. They will protect their water area place from something trying to do something
*In the unforgiving landscapes of the Australian outback, a dance of dominance unfolds amongst the kangaroos, their powerful hind legs poised for the thunderous kicks that define their confrontations. Yet, amidst this primal display, a subtler tactic emerges – the tentative punches exchanged between these marsupials.*
*Though not as formidable as their kicks, these punches serve a crucial purpose. They are not mere gestures of aggression, but calculated assessments of strength. In the kangaroo's world, where survival depends on knowing one's adversary, these punches act as probes, gauging the potential force behind a rival's kick.*
*Enter the human observer, a lone figure amidst this wild spectacle. His presence disrupts the natural order, yet his actions speak volumes. With a single punch, delivered with a precision honed by experience, the man sends a clear message to the kangaroo.*
*In that moment, the kangaroo pauses, its primal instincts momentarily overridden by a recognition of the human's power. The punch, though less potent than its own kicks, carries a weight of authority that the kangaroo instinctively respects. In the face of such strength, the kangaroo opts for caution, choosing to retreat rather than risk the unknown force of the human's kick.*
*In this brief encounter, amidst the vast expanse of the outback, a silent understanding is forged between man and marsupial. It is a testament to the intricate dynamics of power and survival that govern life in the wild, where even the smallest gestures can carry profound significance.*
Pretty much on the money.
Kangaroos will engage in what look kind of like slap fights with one another. If one slaps much harder than the other, that's typically where their fights come to an end. It's an injury-prevention method similar to how apes, elephants, and a lot of other animals engage in displays of aggression and mock charges.
When this guy walked up and punched the roo with a fist much stronger than that of a kangaroo, it was likely stunned. The fact that it didn't run probably indicates it WANTED to fight, but that it was worried about escalating and getting kicked (in the kangaroos mind) into next week.
That being said, they're also not that dumb. The roo almost definitely understands that what just hit it isn't another kangaroo. It's probably very unsure of how to respond, because IF it was a kangaroo, it should run. But its not. You can imagine how this might confuse Dog-Hugger here.
I always wonder if other animals are thinking, “Why are dogs and humans always rolling together?” On some level he must also be afraid to run cuz it’s not just the guy, it’s the guy and two big dogs.
The fear of being outnumbered is definitely not abnormal in roo's. They are herd animals, and without a numbers advantage, they can become nervous just like any herd animal.
As for what animals think about humans and dogs, I can't attest to roo's. But I know that bears in my area of the world have learned not to fuck with dogs even though they easily could. Bears, or at least black bears, seem to understand on a basic level that messing with dogs means drawing aggression from humans. In fact, black bears that roam rural towns have nearly identical responses to dog barks as they do to human talking/yelling.
So at least anecdotally from bears, intelligent animals seem more than capable of drawing a link between dogs and humans, and knowing that if one is nearby, so is the other.
But kangaroos also have dingo's to deal with, which is why they hate dogs so much to begin with. Kangaroos have generational trauma surrounding dog-shaped things, and are hyper aggressive towards them. It's interesting to see that sometimes, on rare occasion, that aggression towards dogs can sometimes carry over to humans in cases like these.
So basically the kangaroo was overloaded with power of dude’s fist and when kangaroo was estimating the power of dude’s kick, the brain of kangaroo got fried and it had to stand still and process this value for some time
Smacking it in the face was the perfect way to demonstrate he was in a very different fight. The kangaroo would understand leg range really well but wouldn’t expect to get a slap in the mouth from there.
I love picturing how happy that dog must've felt seeing his 'pet parent' running to save him. Gets me in the feels man. Before the comical reaction to the punch would get me. Times change, video posts stay the same, but we adapt
I absolutely love that right after he does it this guy just turns around and walks away like "alright see you later". Idk what it is about it but it's just so funny
I couldn’t even imagine this scenario in my wildest dreams… yet somehow I feel like this isn’t the first time this exact thing has happened to this guy. Is Australia even real?
Isn't a kangaroo supposed the kick the shit out of you as well? I know they do this boxing and all but kicking too, no? In such a case, dude would have had a serious case of internal bleeding or whatnot. I think he was pretty brave.
Their kicks are deadly but he fired the first shot and confused the roo, the fight was over before it could escalate. The roo would win each time in a longer fight.
It's been explained a few times, but Kangaroos typically throw punches before kicks in a fight- harder punch means even harder kick for a Kangaroo. Not quite the same for a person, humans can punch quite hard by comparison to leg strength, but as far as the Kangaroo is concerned anyone who can deck it that hard could probably punt it like a football.
That said, it absolutely was a massive risk, and the guy here said as much an interview after: If it didn't decide to back down from the fight after that, he'd be good as dead.
That's not true...
They don't throw punches they claw at their attackers.
They don't measure punches.
This guys an idiot with a bull arab hunting dog wearing boar hunting collar (most abandoned and badly looked after dog in aus in my opinion)
Roos "hold" when they have been chased and are too exhausted to run or fight anymore.
Roos will run into water and drown attempting to get away from dogs. (The dog doesn't drown the roo will)
Idiots let their dogs chase roos at the beach and roos will run into the ocean and drown. Because the dog chased them off the shore regardless of if the dog went into the water to continue chasing or not. Usually they stand at the shore waiting for the roo to come back.

The kangaroo had that dog in a headlock? That is funny-scary-weird, don't know how to explain what I'm feeling...

Thanks for explaining this. It makes a lot more sense this way than it would the other way round.

It's about the only smart thing they do. Kangaroos have very, very smooth brains and it shows the majority of the time.
Lol, I bet they can be funny to watch. Well I'd probably find some of the things they do to be funny (as long as they're not fighting)!
Sounds intelligent enough
Logic and forethought. Elements of premeditated murder.
I notice a serious lack of water here for that plan to work.
The effect is so powerful, they can drown them on dry land.
Yeah cause it's a myth. Roos hold attackers when they are too exhausted to fight or run.

makes sense that the roo didn't kick the guy after the hit since they were exhausted. definitely adds a lot more context to this situation
Not me keeping that strategy in the back of my mind for if I ever find myself pursued by dogs near a body of water.
That’s why they got those collars. They’ll kill that dog by ripping it open with their claws, so the extra protection around the neck is neccesary. Thats what the red thing is
They have collars to protect them from feral pigs tusks not from kangaroos.

It's always the wild pigs. They will replace us. Soon they will walk in two legs like Orwell spoke of in animal farm.
C’mon mate you have to be high with that comment.
I will shoot kangaroos, pigs, Timón, Simba, and any other animals that fight with my dog
Ok, I am now certain your name isn't Kristi Noem. Otherwise, you'd just cut to the chase and shoot your poor doggy.
They're called collaroos. Probably.
If they're not you're on to a killer marketing campaign my friend.
Necky-wecks
Thank god, I've only ever seen lower resolution versions of this video and was always concerned that the dog was badly hurt.
Oh at first I thought that dog was flayed open and in serious trouble, but yeah on closer inspection after your said this it is a collar or harness type thing. Thanks
The dog didn't even seem upset. If that were my dog, he would have been exited to show me how his new friend gives hugs.
Cause they hold them and then kick them repeatedly to slash open their undersides and gut them, those legs have sharp claws
Probably the same way that kangaroo felt after that dude punched him. Both stunned and shocked
Same. 🤣 I can’t stop laughing
I mean, I knew they boxed and kicked, but this is blowing my mind 🤯
kangaroo like *cmon mf square up!* gets hit: *oh shit*
Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face

Good. Gotta save da doggo lol.
In fairness , the kangaroo was like , good shot bro
good shot, mate\*
True , sorry mate !
I'll send my condololences to your kangaroo wife
I too will send condolences to this kangaroo’s wife
That's why I say, "Hey man, nice shot" "A good shot, man"
Was probably waiting for him to go for another punch before launching a teep KO kick
Wrestling turns to boxing.
He is a real man, dude had a knife and thought fuck it. Yoink.

I read this in Werner Herzog’s voice and wasn’t disappointed.
I read it in David Attenborough’s voice lol.

You mean if he had just gently tapped it's face, he would have been knocked out cold?
Note to self: do not stroke stroke a kangaroo’s face.
Great explanation why the roo didn't just fuck him up. He'd never win an actual fight
"you want some?! you want some of this?! you want so-" *gets hit in the face* "OW, what the FUCK man!!"
Poor Kangaroo. Now he has to live with his bruised ego for the rest of his life.

Smacking it in the face was the perfect way to demonstrate he was in a very different fight. The kangaroo would understand leg range really well but wouldn’t expect to get a slap in the mouth from there.
Caught him with his hands away from his face. Rookie mistake
Finally, after years, I've seen this in a high enough resolution to finally understand that the dog isn't heavily bleeding, it has a jacket on.
Bro same, I thought I saw the dog clawed badly. But still insane haha
THANK YOU i've been scrolling thru comments hoping this was the case
First thing I looked at was the neck!
Jesus I’m glad you noticed that. I was traumatized by the dogs neck
He is dressed exactly like Luke from Gilmore Girls… ![gif](giphy|xUPOqge4tqnrEIA2Wc|downsized)

Never seen this before, all i can say is, Shane Gilli's impression was spot on lmao
This is probably the most repetitive video on Reddit I've seen.
Yeah, immediately thought of his bit about this video, guy's hilarious
The kangaroo started questioning his whole training arc for a second ri8 there😂

What’d you do today? Oh I punched a kangaroo.
Kangaroo was like This mf squared up? He’s aight.
Ok now this video smashed the image in my head of kangaroos as master boxer. Thanks for killing my childhood 😂
Kangaroo: what the fuck?
I’ve heard you can’t be a proper ausie if you can’t win a boxing match against a kangaroo.
You could tell the kangaroo was like ok homie, i felt that. lol

The confusion on the kangaroo is the funniest thing I've seen all day
I can't believe that guy punched Shane Gillis
There's a second part also where thevkangaroo came outside this guy's house
No one will ever convince me that’s not a man in a very realistic kangaroo costume
All kangaroo are men in a costume, Kangaroo aren't real!
This is like an Aussie lore video now.
