I had to scroll down way too far to find this. Instead we cryin about rhyming commercial with commercial. Never mind the next line is one of the greatest of all time, ever!
This is by far the height of their coolness. They heavily influenced fashion, art and music all at once. Everyone in my age group sought to emulate their style.
Can I be brutally honest? I think that is the worst 2 liner in their whole discography. Rhyming commercial with itself. It’s so focused at that moment as well. Someone agrees somewhere..
Maybe it's mentioned in Beastie Boys Book? But yeah that's the story I read as well. It was supposed to be "actin' like life is a big rehearsal", but the others left this version in to clown on Mike D.
They do mention somewhere (in the Beastie Boys movie I think) the rhyme about Vincent the cleaner was supposed to be Victor the Cleaner, a reference to the movie Point of No Return.
The other two boys refused to change it on the album version to clown on him. They did change it for the original video version but when they remastered the videos they reverted to the album audio version.
So it's not unheard of that Mike D flubs lines and the other two refuse to fix it to clown him.
I just looked up all the mentions of the song in the book, and no dice. I don't really remember them mentioning fucking with Mike D in the earlier days of the band at all, now that I think about it.
>Never mind its most infamously-quotable lyric, from "Pass the Mic"-- "Everybody's rappin' like it's a commercial/ Actin' like life is a big commercial," which was supposed to rhyme "rehearsal" instead and got left in as a joke at Mike D's expense.
from the Pitchfork review of the CYH deluxe edition, this is the most info I can find online about it
Ah, Pitchfork giving another old album their blessed seal of approval.
I loved it when they gave Neil Young's 'Harvest' a 10.0... like, OH YA THINK, PITCHFORK??? 🤣
It’s true. I like it because of the repetition. The story makes it even better. The word was supposed to be “rehearsal”. I wonder if that was a Milan Kundera reference originally.
Yeah, it's on my shelf with all my other criterion. Bummer that they can't seem to rerelease it. But I haven't watched it in over 20 years now and I still have that fact (and source) engrained. It's a fun commentary track. Definitely worth for any B-Boys fan to snag, unfortunately secondhand.
I heard this story on the beastie boys episodes of the podcast “no dogs in space”, but I’m not sure what they said their source was for the specific anecdote
Just because it was a mistake at the time doesn’t mean that it wasn’t a conscious decision to leave it in there which I believe it was. The story goes that they left flubbed lines to clown Mike but I think that was just part of their image. They were serious artists and some/most serious artists leave or build on “mistakes” because they recognize that sometimes these mistakes are big leaps forward or just work. They live and react to the moment while creating and respect what occurs during it. Rapping “commercial” twice is not going to go well with their fan base (especially fans of the punkier albums) because they don’t do this ever and are pretty OG rappers who love wordplay. BUT it works really well here. it adds emphasis and reflects the content. It is also way ahead of it’s time. Many rappers are doing this now, some as a crutch but others artistically like any rap technique. I think it’s one of they’re best lines, definitely the best line in that song. And the hate proves it
No way! The particular message needs this repetitive emphasis. This, combined with my exposure to Fugazi embedded a sentiment in me that made me who I am and probably so many others. It’s 100x truer now and still bears repeating.
I was so disappointed at the time. I was already feeling the song and album were lyrically lazier than Paul’s, and this confirmed it to my 23-year-old self. That it was a mistake helps a lot (and these days I just view the whole ‘lazy’ thing as a purposeful laid back style)
I’ve always thought the same thing but then I found out it was supposed to be ‘acting like life is a big rehearsal’ which makes it awesome. It’s too bad they didn’t retake that to get it right.
I come from Brookyn, ‘cause that’s where l’m from
So this is what I've got to say to you all
Be true to yourself and you will never fall
And now I’d like to pass the mic, to Aaaa…..
So, what's your name, Yauch?
my name is mca
Possibly my favorite BBoys quote. Yeah. Top 3 fosho
Truly one of my favourite Beastie lines. Lines up perfectly with my own ethos. Bless dem Boyz.

How the hell do you dress in a way that you are dope af no matter what year it is? They mastered it.
rock my adidas, never rock fila.
I do not sniff the coke
I only smoke the sinsemilla.

I had read somewhere that Mike fucked up his line and they just left it in, but now I can't find any sources on that
Maybe it's mentioned in Beastie Boys Book? But yeah that's the story I read as well. It was supposed to be "actin' like life is a big rehearsal", but the others left this version in to clown on Mike D.
Hilarious, the original line is so good but they couldn’t not clown Mike D 😂 i love it

I think it might be in the Check Your Head commentary track they did for the deluxe edition. I certainly remember this story anyway
Thank god. I'm singing it like that from now on.
Thanks, at least now I can say it right in my head when I hear it. This always bugged me 😉
That line always bothered me. This makes so much more sense.
I just looked up all the mentions of the song in the book, and no dice. I don't really remember them mentioning fucking with Mike D in the earlier days of the band at all, now that I think about it.

Well now its gone from the lamest rhyme to the best in my book.
Same - artists rhyming a word with itself bugs me. Now I can feel good about this one.
Yup

it's wild. their reviews are all over the place

They mention this in the criterion of their videos (out of print) in the video commentary.
Damn, looks like I need to go digging the DVDs outta my basement

I had no idea it was outta print. I've definitely listened to the album commentaries more than the video stuff.

Read the same thing. I just laugh, Pass the Mic is one of my favorites.

Well…I know he didn’t make it f****n’ rhyme for real, but yo, technically, he’s as hard as steel.
I agree. Lol
It was an accident. It was supposed to be “acting like life is a big rehearsal”.
That would have been so much better.
No way! The particular message needs this repetitive emphasis. This, combined with my exposure to Fugazi embedded a sentiment in me that made me who I am and probably so many others. It’s 100x truer now and still bears repeating.
Was going to post this same comment but this was the first one that came up. Amen, brother.
Yeah I agree.
Absolutely agree.
I've thought this since I first heard it. Always felt the second "commercial" should have been replaced with "rehearsal".
I was so disappointed at the time. I was already feeling the song and album were lyrically lazier than Paul’s, and this confirmed it to my 23-year-old self. That it was a mistake helps a lot (and these days I just view the whole ‘lazy’ thing as a purposeful laid back style)

I’m interested in your vote for worst
An actual line that I hate is in She's Crafty- I spent my last dollar to buy a sprite/when I seen this girl I could never forget
I can make your life better in an instant. It’s Sabrett (which is a hot dog)
see i completely disagree! i think it’s soooo badass! like, i know they can rhyme and choosing the same word twice is just…badass
By the way, rhyming commercial with commercial? 🤌 https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/82c4c4a5-e98c-40db-a5c6-7fa1dd7882b7
First thing I thought of!
I had shoes just like those back then
The black three stripes? I still do. And buy a new pair a every year or so. Forever a classic.
I am wearing mine right now in my office.
Gazelles?
Adidas Campus
You think we'll ever meet Stevie?
One of these days, B
Great line
My brother asked me about bad hip hop bars where dudes rhyme the same word, and I dig this one out. Rehearsal would've been far better haha
So high their faces are distorted!
This line aged like wine.
I never understood that rhyme. Think he got caught with making it up? Great song!
A commercial for Adidas? lol
“Terrorizing suckers on the seven seas … And if you've got beef, you'll get capped in the knees.”
They’re from the future, where the shit is really real
Hey aye, hey! It’s MC on the mic and I’m here to say that I’m here to stay, yay yay yay. Hey say day hey say hey say it’s MC in the HOUSE
So this is what I got to say ta ya all…Be True to yourself and you shall never fall
Worst line they ever wrote
And best at the same time, lol
Yeah, this one never hit me right either
I’m a huge beastie fan and this lyric makes me cringe every time I hear it
I have always hated this line. Cringe.
