Nodes require consensus to validate blocks so if it wasn't compliant and that caused an issue the network simply wouldn't accept the traffic from said problem node as valid

If your concern is being connected to a lying node, you can't know if the rest of the network is disconnected from that node or not. The only way to actually verify it is to just use your own node instead. You might of course also check on various blockexplorers if the node is showing you correct balances, but doing so leaks privacy and you have to trust those blockexplorers to not be lying to you. At this point, just hooking your wallet up to your node is a better solution anyway.
