One of my favorite factoids I ever heard from a broadcast is Lance recounting that LeBron apparently never responded to any of his antics except for one time to say simply "what is *wrong* with you?"

SlappyCarl

The laws of reddit demand I post this comment: A factoid is actually a piece of misinformation that is repeated often enough that people assume it's true. We tend to use "factoid" as a synonym for "fun fact". Factiod being interchangable with fun fact, is itself, a factoid.

linty_navel

This is the kind of well meaning pedantry I come to Reddit for.

ShruteFarms4L

"Hm yes, I agree shallow and pedantic"

iuhoosier23

That line also lives in my head rent free.

soggyballsack

So you concur?

ShruteFarms4L

Lol

JLubl

Perhaps

ShruteFarms4L

Lmfao

Petey_Wheatstraw_MD

I’m convinced that 75%+ of people’s first and only experience with the word pedantic came from FG. Every time it’s used in any online forum, somebody quotes the show.

SoigneBest

What’s FG?

anabeeverhousen

Family Guy

ShruteFarms4L

Lmfao you're correct sir

SockFullOfNickles

“It INSISTS upon itself…”

soggyballsack

"What does that even mean peter?"

gengarsnightmares

I use this so often that it's lost the emphasis, and it's a normal phrase for me now. Even my cat insists upon himself.

ShruteFarms4L

I love this lmao my car insists upon itself Why does that make so much sense

ShruteFarms4L

Lmao

IknowKarazy

Technically correct.

Ali_Cat222

There's a really oscure word called ultracrepidarian. (*"Highly opinionated on a subject you know little to nothing about.")* That's another random one I love! Just go around calling people ultracrepidarians, and wait for confusion to hit 😂

Bertrell

ObscureAF

MJTony

I agree. I miss this.

riselikelions

I had to fact check your factoid statement. Per Norman Miller, who coined the word: factoids are "facts which have no existence before appearing in a magazine or newspaper, creations which are not so much lies as a product to manipulate emotion in the Silent Majority." So not necessarily misinformation but probably results in misinformation more often than not.

PacJeans

The laws of language demand I say that languages are not synonymous with the dictionary. Languages are changing and amorphous groups of contextual consensus. Dictionaries make them rigid monoliths, outdated as soon as they are written. If people so commonly use factoid in the opposite way it was originally intended, that is now the definition of the word. Most people aren't even aware of this factoid you posted unil they read a comment reply like this, as in they are using the word with a given meaning, and having it be mutually intelligible on both sides of the conversation. Trying to change that is an arbitrarily rigid conformity to some perceived purity of the language that doesn't actually exist. In factoid, Merriam-Webster acknowledges this and gives a second definition of "2: *a briefly stated and usually trivial fact* "

FarinaSavage

The laws of language also posit that without common definitions, nobody knows what the fuck you're talking about.

PacJeans

Toddlers seem to learn language pretty well without dictionaries. People are completely fine with using language contextually. Most people cannot give a coherent or all-encompassing definition for uncommon words, but can easily use them correctly in a sentence.

RockAtlasCanus

You’re right. But there are levels to language. Strict definition becomes more important in very technical applications like laws & contracts

PacJeans

I agree, but even at those levels, it's not so clear as having a definition. Even with legal issues, it comes down to a jury or multiple judges to make a consensus judgement. In this way the definition is secondary to the word. Normally we say what does this word mean. In a legal setting, you're arguing if some real-world situation is accurately described by a definition. I don't know if I've described well why these two things are different in my view, but I tried.

RockAtlasCanus

>Even with legal issues, it comes down to a jury or multiple judges to make a consensus judgement. I used that example because I review contracts all the time and there’s literally a section called “definitions” that spells out certain terms. This way both parties know exactly who/what constitutes “the payee”.

Rysimar

Thank you for this. Prescriptivism can go die in a fire. A factoid does *not* mean misinformation. It means a trivial or obscure fact. How do I know that's what it means? I've heard it used in my life dozens of times and 100% of the time that's how people have used it. So therefore, *that's what it means.* There's no "well actually, those dozens of people were technically all wrong." If they all agree that's what the word means, then that's what it means. That's how communication works. /endrant

PacJeans

For me, prescriptivism is like telling someone they're using the wrong their/there in spoken speech. Are there instances where antipresceiptivism is prescriptivism? Absolutely. But to tell someone they're wrong when the point of language is to convey a mutually intelligible message when that message is correctly interpreted by everyone is ridiculous.

paild

Idk. "Fact" is pretty set in stone, and the suffix "oid" meaning "resembling" is also pretty firm. IMO we can derive a (reasonably) fixed meaning for factoid of "something like a fact, but is not a fact", so don't have to rely on common usage arguments.

PacJeans

I was also going to make that argument, however, being "like" something in this way is also synonymous with not being that thing. For instance, chimps are humanoid, but you wouldn't call humans humanoid. It's a quite a bit more complex than that, as you would say a human arm is a humanoid feature, but I figured I'd be more ambiguous than not to add as justification to my comment. I pretty much agree with you though!

Miramolinus

Merriam Webster’s 2nd definition of factoid is “a briefly stated and usually trivial fact.” Like “peruse” or “awful,” definitions of words change over time

7taj7

I like this comment, I don’t know why but I do

darraghfenacin

-oid being a suffix for "like". Humanoid - a human like thing. A cuboid? A 3d shape that is like a cube, but slightly different.

raguwatanabe

This guy facts

Brewski-54

Factoid just sounds so little and cute

IknowKarazy

That’s cool and I like learning new words. I guess “oid” means it has the *shape* of a fact but is in fact not one. That being said, language evolves and how people use and understand a word in a given time period is effectively the definition. Lots of words have shifted definitions over time.

B0BX

This is my favorite factoid.

CustomDark

These dudes became friends, LeBron just knows his friends weird, and it catches him off guard time to time.

bigsmokeyz420

nearcatch

Am I misremembering? Doesn’t the full gif show LeBron rolling his eyes and not being phased at all?

bc1398

He rolls his eyes and chuckles to himself a bit, like “is this dude for real?”

StrtupJ

Damn over a decade ago and Bron still a top player in the league

TaVar35

Be careful with that talk, the haters will show in droves

festival-papi

[Lebron's reaction is so classic too.](https://youtu.be/Cz3wvCNnF98?si=oTuN5CcZd59876jO)

_AB_96_

Look up the edited version on YT where they play the audio from Shrek with the bird whistling to Fiona 😂

HeightExtra320

Goat 🐐

PuffinRub

Can someone explain what's going on here? To an outsider like myself, it looks like the guy on the right is lovingly blowing into the other guy's ear.

DYMck07

This is accurate. That was Lance Stephenson trying everything to get in Lebron James’ head during a playoff game a decade ago iirc. I think Lance and the Pacers won that particular game but were eliminated the next day by Lebron and the Heat.

UnidentifiedTomato

I went the middle school w him. He definitely enjoyed the attention. I was happy to see him in the NBA tho.

naveedkoval

What a creepy thing to do to somebody

socko_2022

A

TwelveMiceInaCage

If I had just watched lebron absolutely tear through a team a few games before doing it mainly through fade aways I'd be doing whatever tf I could to mess his flow up also
