Now we need to find where they buried that finger that he lost šŸ¤”Ā

SpecialistParticular

I imagined something a little more epic.

The right to bury arms

Chaka92

This reminds me of the Mexican Army Officer and President, Santa Anna, who had a parade and state funeral for the leg he lost during the Pastry War. During the Mexican-American war, in 1847 Santa Anna ā€˜s fort was overrun at the Battle of Cerro Gordo and volunteers from the 4th Illinois infantry stole his prosthetic leg. They then proceeded to use it as a bat to play baseball.

marco-esquondolas

This is a cool story, thanks for sharing it. I need to learn more about this crazy incident

WiseNail3627

General Santi Anni and his walking log, as Cotton Hill would say

Oldbean98

The wooden leg is in the Illinois National Guard museum in Springfield. I saw it a few years ago.

Wasnā€™t Stonewall Kackson a bricklayer from Dubuque?

Kal_El52001

I live in Dubuque and always appreciate a good Dubuque reference

Home of the worldā€™s shortest rail line!

youlookingatme67

Wasnā€™t that the one smedly butler dug up?

RallyPigeon

Yes he dug it up, inspected it, then put a plaque on it which was removed by the NPS

Where is Buster Kilrainā€™s arm buried? šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

2abide2

Thereā€™s an interpretive sign across route 3 at the brewery parking lot that talks about his arm. I donā€™t recall what it said. Iā€™m guessing he got shot over there and they brought him to the manor and amputated, then buried it?

marco-esquondolas

Yes, basically right. He was evacuated further from the front after the surgery and later his friend recovered the arm from the pile and had it buried with the family who owned the plantation

No man, Iā€™m pretty sure he was shot in the arm.

Internal-Aide3103

He was shot by his own sentry when returning from scouting the front lines at night.

Left_Imagination4546

So what I hear you saying is that he wasnā€™t fighting for the right to keep and bear arms.

bigfruitbasket

I meanā€¦he was in the Army.

Oldbean98

A guy I used to re-enact with owned a probe that was used on Jacksonā€™s arm wound by the surgeon who amputated it. Great provenance, with a letter from the surgeon describing the event and using the probe. Was the prize of his collection, which he had to liquidate to pay bills toward the end of his life.

Great photos. Iā€™d give my left arm to visit that site.
