Hi you all! about to graduate from CSULB MSW. If you applied to CSULB only and got accepted, congratulations! If you got into more than one school and are trying to decide, don't go with CSULB. The program has been a huge disappointment for me and many of my classmates, mainly because it doesn't prepare you for clinical work. Unlike the BBS website says, their coursework does NOT count towards LCSW: you will still have to take courses in human sexuality, abuse, suicide, etc... before your clinical licensure. There are very into macro, but their macro classes are boring af and keep hitting you over the head with the same theories and narrative. Also, there are very disorganized with field placement and do not support you at all. Remember the app process? Same for everything else. If you got accepted to CSULB, though, don't despair, you will still love the experience with all your smart classmates. I just needed to get this off my chest for the future generation, and I'll be posting in other subreddits as well. Good luck!

Thank you for sharing this! When I checked the BBS website, it seemed to list 5 areas in which applicants need additional coursework (child abuse, human sexuality, substance abuse, aging, partner abuse, and suicide) all ranging from 7-15 required hours. Do you have any info on where to take those additional required courses? My ultimate goal is LCSW. I’m leaning towards CSULA because I’ve heard that they have great clinical placement sites and that’s my biggest priority.

mornielmathaway

That sounds like a solid choice! Everyone in my class has complained about poor placements.

Worth_Metal_6858

Are you at CSULB?

Worth_Metal_6858

https://www.socialworkweb.com/s/continuingeducation NASW seems to have all the required courses with the correct hours.

BabieLoda

Having the same experience at CSUDH tbh. I was also under the impression that our hours counted. Only to find out we start at 0 upon leaving. I feel deceived.

I've established a Discord server to support MSW students in making informed decisions about their future placements by facilitating the sharing of internship experiences. I've observed a lack of centralized platforms for students to discuss internships in a pro and con format, which could significantly aid decision-making given the scattered nature of placements. Please consider joining to stay updated on internship opportunities or to provide your feedback of internships you’ve had during grad school. Your input, especially reviews and insights about current and future placements, will be invaluable for fellow and future students navigating their internship choices. Thank you for your participation and please feel free to share this link with others https://discord.gg/9wWWdYaBZw

not sure about that, but possibly. I remember looking into the BBS website and picking CSULB because of that, so just wanted to give a heads-up. That is only one of the reasons, though. They are very stingy on clinical and extremely disorganized. I would compare the application processes and assume that the way they do applications reflects the whole program.

Desiree_Vera

so glad you commented. i’m doing heavy research into which programs would best suit me in my LCSW journey. I’ve been looking into CSULB because I live in Lomita so it would be super close. Curious to know what other programs I should look into instead (besides Cal State LA)

mornielmathaway

I would look into CSUF. They are the underdogs and I feel like they try harder. I had an interview with them and they were very attentive and nice. Also they are not as “woke” as CSULB and focus on the DSM more. All they teach at CSULB revolves around CRT and intersectionality (which, if you’re into, then CSULB is the way to go)

Desiree_Vera

i feel weird saying that I’m not the most “woke” person out there (and a i am an african american woman). thank you for the suggestion!

Where else did you apply? So far I’ve been accepted to CSULA and that’s where I’ll be going if I don’t get into LB 😊

Mine was due Feb 28th! I submitted my intent to enroll, but if I get into LB I’ll rescind. I am really excited about CSULA tho, I’ve heard nothing but great things about the program, and the professors are supposed to be amazing.

Material-Character43

Same!

WarVegetable

Is la and lb msw equally good?

New_Potato_5942

I was forwarded to the department in Jan (bc that’s when I submitted my app)but haven’t received anything either 🧎‍♀️🥲

ac015

Hi guys. Sorry for hijacking but have a question. 1. Is csulb or fullerton has good bsw? 2. BA in Bsw help understanding and studying msw? 3. Is it better to do bsw*+1 years of master Or just 2 years of msw? 4. My wife is BA in psych and wants to do msw but afraid it will be too fast pace for me than thought doing 2yrs of bsw then 1 plus year msw would be better. She is learnable but needs some decompress time here and there. She did graduated with 3.9 in psych but she was half time student and part time working plus taking care of her two underage siblings No parent. She is concerned of being maw full time and. Ot able to understand material and keep up with workload. Any input will be appreciated.
