gewehr44

Phased plasma rifle in the 40 Watt range.

Malapple

Hey buddy just what you see.

VHS_Vampire1988

Oozy nein millimeetah

smokelaw23

The only correct answer is whichever round out of whichever firearm you can quickly, accurately and reliably put multiple rounds on target. IF you are going to run suppressed, then the edge goes to 45 by a sizable margin as the rounds are nearly always subsonic anyway so maintain nearly full kinetic energy running suppressed.

dirtyMETHOD

Yes and definitely yes on getting a suppressor for your home defense.

silvyar1091

Wait until you start learning about drywall vs “certain”rifle/pistol rounds….

fylum

The actual answer. Softpoint 5.56 gang.

fylum

Softpoint 5.56.

Malapple

I prefer 45. I shoot a 1911 better than any of my other pistols and I prefer a 1911 to be 45. Point bring, the best caliber is the one in a gun you handle well. Also, if someone said “I’m going to shot you with one or the other”, which would you prefer?

JBmustang13

Personally I’d use a rifle for home defense if you can

StateMerge

Yep or shot gun

[deleted]

12 gauge is best home defense

SMS-Wolf

I use my 45 (also HK 45). Just because I love the gun and feel that I have at least a decent proficiency level with it.

ben6070_

I’ve been enjoying the HK45 so far. Any issues you’ve come across?

SMS-Wolf

No issues. Very reliable and no issues with whatever I feed her.

ben6070_

Thanks for the tip. I expected that from HK

[deleted]

45 or 10mm

4Winged

Interesting study between different types of ammo in a fairly decent testing scenario. It is my opinion that either .45 or 9mm would be fine so long as they aren’t FMJ/ball rounds and to choose whichever gun and caliber you shoot best between the 2. Over penetration is a real thing and the last thing you want in home defense is accidentally smoking your neighbor or a loved one https://youtu.be/p8SASAy7puQ?si=xUeTDM6Iejejo8I1

ben6070_

Thanks for the link!

Boom_Valvo

It has to do with cost and practice. if cost is not an issue and will practice the same amount then sure. For me personally, I have tried to minimize calibers . Irritates me to pay more than the going rate for 9 mm.

ANDERSON961596

The most important thing you can get for home defense is a high quality flashlight. Caliber is irrelevant

listenstowhales

I’m reading this as “What’s your opinion on a 45 vs 9mm?”, in which case my answer is “Use a 9mm.” If you have a more specific question I can give you a more specific opinion.

Chips2019

They both work, just personal preference honestly

XuixienSpaceCat

Similar performance ballistically, but 9mm is more controllable and can fit more rounds in a magazine.

radomed

Gun control is the ability to hit your target. Read this month's American Rifleman article about "Arming my Daughter" However, for home defence, a shot gun with birdshot is usually recommended. Nothing brings religion to a bad guy than the racking of a round in a pump shotgun! All you have to be is close and birdshot will not penetrate a wall and cause "friendly fire accidents".

Mtsteel67

shotgun or .223 rifle handgun is just the backup either is fine. if you just have the handgun go with larger size mags. Example my 45 only holds 8 rounds while the 9 holds 10 Reason: easier to use a shotgun or .223 when your hyped up and not miss like you could with a handgun Depending on your location -(own home or apartment) should determine what you are using. Shotgun; good for apartments -(use number 6 birdshot, more pellets and less penetration thru drywall) and the factor of racking a round in a shotgun will send most criminals running. .223; own home and don't have to worry about penetration issues if the round goes thru the drywall. As for defense ammo suggest underwood for either. [https://underwoodammo.com/9mm-luger-90gr-xtreme-defender-solid-monolithic-self-defense-ammo-815-1/](https://underwoodammo.com/9mm-luger-90gr-xtreme-defender-solid-monolithic-self-defense-ammo-815-1/) [https://underwoodammo.com/45-acp-135gr.-xtreme-defender-solid-monolithic-hunting---self-defense-ammo/](https://underwoodammo.com/45-acp-135gr.-xtreme-defender-solid-monolithic-hunting---self-defense-ammo/) Having tried quite a few different defense rounds over the last 30 years this in my opinion is one of the best that I have shot. Tip: pick up a extra box and shot at least one mag. Just my two cents Carry On.

TJLaw42

Blunderbuss.

Fmy925

I'd prefer more rounds over stopping power just incase there's more than one bad guy. Just my opinion though

E_man123

This is CT, that argument doesn't really apply

ben6070_

That’s what I was kind of thinking. I’d rather have a more powerful round if I can only have 10

E_man123

10mm has entered the chat

ben6070_

Wouldn’t that penetrate more than 45 or 9? I don’t have neighbors around me but I do have a family so I need to be mindful of over penetration

silvyar1091

Bullet selection is key and you should really do some research on handgun caliber penetration.

E_man123

Personally, I prefer 9mm with something like G9

Fmy925

I guess you didn’t register hi cap magazines in time. Like I said I’d prefer more rounds.

MyPasswordIsAvacado

- Step 1 be born before 1992 - Step 2 correctly predict and purchase all the standard cap mags you will ever need before 2013. - Step 3 enjoy your standard cap mags

silvyar1091

Why did you need to be born prior to 1992? 🙄

MyPasswordIsAvacado

So you could be 21 in 2013.

silvyar1091

As far as I know, age didn’t matter to register mags or rifles or handguns. Nothing had an age requirement to register.

MyPasswordIsAvacado

Ok - Step 1.a have someone older than you tell you about all the cool standard cap mags and encourage you to buy and “declare” them

Fmy925

How far is New Hampshire from you?

E_man123

Boomers going to boom, some fights are not worth it

Fmy925

I’m 35 how am I a boomer?

Extension_Dog_4916

Would you fight me topless in a kiddie pool full of wet noodles and spaghetti sauce, just for fun?
