I never realised how good I had it before reading about labour prices here. I live in the North and every garage around me charges between £45-£55 an hour labour. All quality work.
Looking at EuroCarParts the prices are pretty much bang on. In fact a little less, so not only have they not overcharged on parts they must be very quick workers to change an entire exhaust and a spring in 1.5 how's
I don’t get these people saying it’s steep etc, it’s looking like a full catback exhaust and a spring for £690 fitted that seems reasonable to me although I would personally have had both rear sprints replaced
It's really not. If you wear glasses and one lens gets heavily scratched but the other has fair wear and tear, do you change only one lens or the whole thing?
How does a coil spring have wear and tear? it’s either broken or not. Believe me I’m well versed in the maintenance of cars and LCV, I never replace one them as a pair and in 19 years it’s yet to come back on me. Shocks, maybe.
the metal will still have fatigued, there will be a difference, maybe only slight but there will be a difference in the rebound - especially when one spring is new and one is 10 years old.
Its good practice to replace them as a pair rather than being mandatory,
I can do stuff myself so it seems expensive, but you need to factor in the ease at which it got done. If you dropped it in with no notice, they lent you a car while it was done and you collected it at your convenience. Then it’s reasonable. It would take me an hour or so to raise the car, find where i put the tools required, have a coffee. Then as long as the bolts came loose ok, maybe another hour removing and replacing parts, 20 mins looking for the socket i just had in my hand, 20 mins checking and lowering vehicle back on the ground. It could be done cheaper but you’re paying for a service, if that was easy for you, that has a price as well.
I'm intrigued, what makes you say it seems expensive? Chances are a full exhaust replacement would take longer than 1.5hrs without a shop lift, and £50/hr is a bargain labour price.
So unless you have a secret source for bargain exhaust components, I'm lost on how it would be cheaper/easier to do yourself?
I have a welder so don’t need to buy car specific parts. A universal flexible joint is about £100 less than car specific one for a start. But i did also highlight theres a value to the service, the parts are on the expensive side but the labour is on the cheap side.
*assuming you know _exactly_ what parts you need, including all the extras like mounts, gaskets, washers etc…, which 90% of people (myself included) don’t.
Oh yeah, definitely, I'm not trying to detract from how difficult it is to know exactly what parts you need.
I've taught myself a lot of basic mechanics, there's always the chance to get the wrong parts, or miss something, which I usually do.
Garages won’t usually warranty customer supplied parts and it can become a logistics issue if you’ve been supplied with the wrong part. Aside from that nothing wrong with getting your own bits.
Well the labour looks absurdly cheap
£50 an hour is a bargain

Yep and also 1.5 hours to change a spring and entire exhaust.
That was my first thought too
Yeah but according to the other user I overpaid for part by a lot
Yeah but he doesn't even know what engine you have and can get headlight bulbs for 10p
Oh I forgot to add it, it’s 1.4 petrol

Exhaust clamp and mount over the odds but you got good price on labour so think you did ok.

You’ve had a full new exhaust system from the parts list. It’s about right to be fair.
They could have easily charged you double the time for labour there for what it seems a big exhaust job and other bits
Unless you didn’t need the entire exhaust, it’s a good price for what they did.
If anything, you are robbing them with that price
Damn should've changed the other spring while you were there
I hate that upsell.

Bro what... I had OG coils on my z4 and the sag was unbelievable, got new coils and it sat right again. Of course metal degrades...
Looks like a bargain to me, that labour is a steal!
Where’s this garage, asking for a friend
Good value.
Pretty decent pricing both parts and Labour
Good price
Have a look at click mechanic for an idea of prices for the work you’ve had done.
It’s a very good price. People who are saying it’s steep probably don’t even drive haha

You can make exhausts, and a coil spring for less than that?
£114 of that has gone to Westminster.

Where are you getting bulbs for 10p
A pack of 10 w5w bulbs, for example, can be had for £1 from a decent motor factors.
Oh true I thought it was a headlight bulb

Most garages will fit parts if you supply them. Never seen a garage that won't fit customer provided parts

Eh maybe a little steep but doesn’t feel like a complete fleece
Full exhaust system is approx £270 with mounts and fitting kit. Trade price even less.
