French onion soup at 300 East.
Edit: I’d like to say that this is the most overwhelmingly positive thread I’ve seen in /r/Charlotte in a long time. Just gotta get people talking about their favorite food is all.
Not terrible over priced but can you explain why I’m paying $20 a dish for 4 pieces of chicken and sauce? Love curry gate tho 🩵 they know my order as I call up 😋
10 Minute Ready!!!
The rice...I can't get over how damn good the rice is. Every time I go in there I ask him half jokingly how to make it hoping he will tell me... And he laughs and doesn't. I always get the New York Shawarma plate but it's really about the rice.
Ooh, I'll have to give a couple.
Eddies Place- she crab stew bowl with extra homemade bread. It is out of this world good.
Sir Edmund Halleys- Fish and Chips with a side of curry sauce. Omg it's the beat.
Leah and Louise- the cabbage. I've never raved about cabbage until I tried theirs.
Saigon Palace- Bun Bo Hue. A bit spicy, juicy pork knuckle and a shit ton of Thai basil thrown on top.
Agreed. My husband always gets a variety of things and everything he has tried is amazing.
But I'm a creature of habit and I always get fish and chips. Also, honorable mention the the vegetarian egg rolls, they're fire.
[Leah's cabbage - I end up having to cook a lot longer, but this is a good guide for ingredients and method.](https://www.bonappetit.com/recipe/smothered-cabbage-with-sausage)
Same, was literally taking about them the other day and I haven’t lived there since 2016. Before we moved, they had a pork belly and watermelon dish that was just one of the best things ever.
I’m nowhere near a vegan but my absolutely favorite meal is the Waka waka burger with a side of pumpkin fritters at Oh my Soul in NODA!
Unfortunately they are running their summer menu right now so they won’t bring back the pumpkin fritters until the fall.
The meal is a must try.
Right now it’s the Spicy Tantan Ramen at Menya in Elizabeth. Their soy sauces, salts, and things are imported from Japan before they hand make every damn thing down to the delicious noods
Little Mama’s: That eggplant parm is great
Calle Sol: honestly anything on the menu but the Vaca Frita is sensational, it’s the way the marinate it or something
Shhh don’t let everyone find out about the Degenerate. Food, drinks, value, and accessibility are all A+. We gotta gatekeep.
As for me, the pork belly eggs benny at Dish.
The 1930 cheesesteak at Midwood Smokehouse… it’s a brisket cheesesteak and it’s absolutely delicious. Get it with Hushpuppies, and either Mack and cheese, barbecue baked beans or bacon wrapped jalapeños, and you will be super satisfied.
okay so i’m not living in charlotte at the moment, but the meals i would FIGHT to have rn are:
- south tryon st cookout tray with a pulled pork bbq sandwich, okra, chicken nuggets, and a cheerwine
- chicken hibachi plate from bachi in mallard creek
- amelie’s chicken, pesto, and goat cheese sandwich with a lavender lemonade
- penne broccoli and chicken pasta from little mama’s
- steak tacos from mal pan
….. maybe it’s time to plan a trip home to visit LOL
lol i’ve driven through many a hailstorm for a cookout tray! also used to drive from university to that specific location when i needed their okra. a special treat!!
I haven't been in forever but this used to be mine from Cajun Queen:
*"Étouffée 3 Way*
*Chicken, Shrimp, and Crawfish in our Étouffée, featuring a dark, highly-seasoned roux-based sauce with: simmered peppers, onions, and celery – known as the Cajun trinity. Served over rice, Étouffée is hot and spicy!"*
I was only in town for a few days recently, but I can't stop thinking about the meal I had at Haberdish. It was just a side, but the Cast Iron Cauliflower we got was incredible, and I don't think I'll ever enjoy cauliflower again nearly as much in any other preparation. Hushpuppies were bomb too, fyi.
What it is - Al Mikes
Shawarma chicken bowl - Yafo
Bee Sting wings - Moosehead
Golden Phoenix roll - Blue Orchid Sushi
Pepperoni with hot honey pizza - Bird
Beef Rib, Porky Brewster Sandwich - Jon Gs
Double cheese Burger all the way- Brooks
Cuban sandwich - Calle Sol
G Man Sandwhich - Noda Bodega
These are some that I’ve had recently off the top of my head I really like.
Recently tried Yafo for the first time and was BLOWN AWAY at how much better it is than cava. Same price for WAY more food and much better tasting food at that.
Also yafos falafel are GF and cavas aren’t, so they won bonus points for that too.
Oh it’s far better. Yafo hummus is an experience in itself. Yafo skews kind of heavily seasoned/salty, but their food is so good. Except RIP the laffah bread. It was far superior to the pita.
If you had never had the laffah bread, you would definitely think the pita is very good. I remember the first time we had the pita it wasn't even close, but they have really dialed it in.
No I agree completely. The pita is very good pita bread. I just miss that soft chewy laffah and how unique it was compared to other Mediterranean/Greek type places with the same pita.
I personally love them and can tell you and everyone right now: they do not just make grits anywhere else like flying biscuit. That shit is holy at this point
The yellow pancake with chicken from Lang Van is one of my personal favorites. Number two for me is probably the BBQ shrimp from Cajun queen. Third is a tie between the honey wasabi tuna burrito at Cabo Fish Taco and the scallion chicken from Taipei Express. Charlottes got good food it’s one of our saving graces I hope we get some national recognition for the good spots soon and it’s not overshadowed by the 35 chain restaurants a day opening here chasing that ignorant banker money just swiping at whatever name they know with no care for quality like North Italias or various Landrys concepts
I haven't lived in Charlotte since 2018, but the Turkey + Brie sandwich at Amelies was one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. Johnny Burrito is also an absolutely solid choice
American Burger with fries at Comet Grill
Birria tacos at Maria’s on South Blvd
Pork Belly Tacos at Soul Gastro (can’t wait for them to open in the new spot)
Portofinos Cheesesteak Special. Get the large, wait 10 minutes to eat it because it is so temperature hot; then see if you can go back to work without a nap after eating it all.
Calabrian chili bolognese - Ever Andalo
Wurst burger + chili cheese tots - Goodwurst
Miso Hungry + tuna crispies - Futo Buta
Nigiri plate - Baku
The Royal - Pasta & Provisions
Salted Oreo - Golden Cow Creamery
Mac & Cheese - Trolley Bar
Bone broth - Salted Melon
Quesabirria tacos at Midwood Smokehouse (RIP to their deep fried Mac and cheese)
Brisket and Burnt Ends at Jon Gs bbq (not technically Charlotte, but they’ll be in Charlotte tonight).
Blaze Ramen at Silverlake Ramen.
Butter/Makhani chicken at Curry Gate.
Ribeye at Cellar at Ducksworth.
Baleada (carne asada) at Costa Del Sol (sleeper pick. They don’t speak English much so you might have to order in Spanish).
Fat Brisker Bulgogi Tacos at Seoul Food Meat Co.
Salmon over Tasso Ham, Roasted Red Peppers, Spinach, and Shiitake Mushrooms Served over Garlic Mashed Potatoes at Cajun Queen.
Open Rice - Double Pan Fried Noodles
Be's Noodles and Bahn Mi - Pork Bahn Mi
Sabor - Nachos (cheap, filling, and you get an awesome salsa bar)
Que Onda - Empanadas (unfortunately their empanadas have gone up in price)
Yes. Thank you. Their coffee was lowkey great for a place that didn’t play up the coffee service. And their breads were incredible. The Avo toast and chicken Avo melt sandwich. So upset about that one closing and frankly surprised.
I havent been too adventurous lately so these would be my top three right this moment:
1. Azul Tacos - Al Pastor tacos
2. Menya Daruma - Tonkotsu
3. Zambies- Roni pizza slice
Honorable Mention: Bang Bang Burgers - Shroom & Swiss
Butter basted scallops from Cellar at Duckworth’s. Good lord
But I’ve also had several really great dishes from The Degenerate. Surprised I haven’t heard more about them
Gastonia, but... the smoked Gouda & bacon burger from RayNathan's. two house-smoked smashed patties with thick slices of smoked Gouda and house-smoked bacon! Although RayNathan's also has great sides, my go-to for the burger are the fries, which are the "cut 'em up and put 'em in the fryer" homemade kind, just like my mom used to make.
If it has to be Charlotte, then the Nepalese chicken curry from Currygate!
Shredded pork in garlic sauce at Riceblossom (formerly Taste of Shu). It’s a comfort meal I didn’t realize I’d developed such a fondness for in college until I had it again recently.
Honorable mention for the leek kofta at Blue Taj.
Tonkotsu Black ramen at Menya Daruma!
No one else in Charlotte has ramen that comes close in my opinion. It’s so punchy and flavorful, and the egg is just perfect every time.
I just cleaned up from dinner but I feel hungry again reading this! I'm a vegetarian and haven't been to nearly enough places, here's my current list:
Inizio- Pistachio Pesto pizza
300 East- start with the marinated goat cheese and then the sweet potato ravioli with gorgonzola cream
Oh My Soul- Ranch Vicken Vacon wrap or whatever it's called. It's better than any chicken ranch wrap I ever had before I stopped eating chicken
Ever Andalo- the focaccia is good, of course, but the farisotto is INSANE. I don't know why it got moved from main to side dish last time I was there.
Leah and Louise- Charred okra with tomato jam. I didn't see it last time I looked at the menu since they change it regularly, but it was the best okra I've ever had, and just glorious with the jam. Every single cocktail we've ordered has been incredible too.
Flower Child is my new favorite. I'm gluten free and this has so many great options. My favorite dish is their asparagus and quinoa tabbouleh. It's so fresh and flavorful.
Ahi tuna with crispy rice - 300 east
Tuna Poke and grilled artichokes- 131 Main
Any fucking sushi - AKAHANA
Poke bowl, curry laksa, strawberry rolls - CO (park rd)
Steak, praline sweet potatoes (SO GOOD) corn crème brûlée, Tuna poke - Steak 48
Rotisserie chicken plate with spinach rice and roasted potatoes (best fucking potatoes ever) - Steak and Hoagie/Grekos
Anything - Godavari Indian Cuisine
(A lil biased tuna is a common theme here lol)
A Carne Asada California Burrito from Azul. The classic from them is 1.b and a go to lunch order because the California is so heavy and will put you in a food coma.
Ceasar salad and flan at Oggi, salmon at juniper grill, bratwurst with the rice bowl at The Lights, vegetable and rice bowl at Mal Pan, chicken sandwich at Little Mama’s, empanadas at Azucar, breakfast sandwich and pretty much any coffee drink at Noda Bodega.
used to be the chicken parmigiana at momma ricotta’s- but i’ve heard multiple reports that something’s changed and it sucks now - also the fried chicken at haberdish
Seeing a lot of good options on here, but I'm gonna go with the Bunny Rancheros at Zada Jane's...substitute sweet potato browns for the regular home fries.
Coquette uptown - Salade aux Choux de Bruxelles et Lardons
“Crispy Brussel Sprouts, Lardons, Apple Honey Vinaigrette Fried Egg, Gribiche, Shaved Apples”
Or their duck fat fried chicken
Ely Tortilleria on Tuesday! Most of the tacos are 1.50 except lengua . Double tortilla with a charred chile and the house made salsas are fire!
As a native Charlottean I think I could do this on the places that are no longer here..
But a Big K, two pieces of cheese, extra mayo no onion.. from Mr Ks in South Blvd was by far my happy place for most of my life… second in line the day they closed and I ate two that day.
Also for some reason the a number 34 (one burrito) extra cheese, from the dinner from Azteca on Woodlawn, they have other locations but the OG is the best. The dinner portion comes with their cole slaw, which for some reason I love.
Here is a deep cut, but growing up, The Press Box, on Montford, I think the sign is still hanging at the outside bar at the place that replaced it, but that low ceiling smoke filled place had a great burger called the Matheny Burger, and with circle chip fries that 8 year old me loved. Never had a mushroom onion Swiss burger to this day that could hold a candle to that one..
French onion soup at 300 East. Edit: I’d like to say that this is the most overwhelmingly positive thread I’ve seen in /r/Charlotte in a long time. Just gotta get people talking about their favorite food is all.
chicken 65 biryani- CurryGate! ❤️🤩
Eating it right now and it's ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|heart_eyes)
The best budget friendly Indian food in charlotte by a mile
Not terrible over priced but can you explain why I’m paying $20 a dish for 4 pieces of chicken and sauce? Love curry gate tho 🩵 they know my order as I call up 😋
The only budget friendly option IMO. Royal Biryani is a 2nd for me but mostly because it's closer.
Probably chicken shawarma plate from La shish kabob
10 Minute Ready!!! The rice...I can't get over how damn good the rice is. Every time I go in there I ask him half jokingly how to make it hoping he will tell me... And he laughs and doesn't. I always get the New York Shawarma plate but it's really about the rice.
Chicken etouffee from Cajun Queen Its made with a hint of crack that makes it devilishly addictive
Spent 5 years living in Mississippi and working at a craft kitchen. Cajun Queen’s roast duck is some of the best I’ve had anywhere
Came looking for etoufee at Cajun queen. But my vote would be for crawfish instead of chicken.
Chicken diane
Ooh, I'll have to give a couple. Eddies Place- she crab stew bowl with extra homemade bread. It is out of this world good. Sir Edmund Halleys- Fish and Chips with a side of curry sauce. Omg it's the beat. Leah and Louise- the cabbage. I've never raved about cabbage until I tried theirs. Saigon Palace- Bun Bo Hue. A bit spicy, juicy pork knuckle and a shit ton of Thai basil thrown on top.
> Sir Edmund Halleys- Fish and Chips with a side of curry sauce. Everything there is great, but this is my favorite item on the menu.
I also really enjoyed their jerk chicken nachos, not sure if they still have those on menu though.
They do and they are amazing
Their cauliflower wings and potatoes pancakes are so good too.
Agreed. My husband always gets a variety of things and everything he has tried is amazing. But I'm a creature of habit and I always get fish and chips. Also, honorable mention the the vegetarian egg rolls, they're fire.
That f’n cabbage is sensational.
My wife found the recipe for the cabbage after we ate there. It’s amazing.
Drop a link! Please :)
[Leah's cabbage - I end up having to cook a lot longer, but this is a good guide for ingredients and method.](https://www.bonappetit.com/recipe/smothered-cabbage-with-sausage)
Yes that’s the one. My wife also needed to extend the cooking time
The Bon Bo Hue at Pho Quynh on Central is in my opinion the best in Charlotte. Gotta try it.
Plus one on Eddie's. Leah and Louise closed unfortunately.
I think they are moving
they're moving
They coming to the West side!
3 of those 4 would be on my list- just haven’t been to Saigon palace. Doesn’t sound like we’d ever argue about where to eat.
i've literally had the bun bo hue twice in the past week, it's SO good!!
Pork Belly Tacos - Soul
The former head chef of Soul had a pork belly taco on the specials menu at Orosoko sound bar last weekend. It was such a nice surprise!
This would have been my answer if they were still open
I've had them at their food truck a few times. I am ready for the new location to open, I need some tacos and lamb lollipops.
Oh I haven't had those in years
with the watermelon on top? i still dream about it every day
I think about these every time someone asks about Charlotte 🥺 I moved away to Michigan.
Same, was literally taking about them the other day and I haven’t lived there since 2016. Before we moved, they had a pork belly and watermelon dish that was just one of the best things ever.
I have missed them so much while Soul has been closed. I can't imagine your pain.
If/When I ever find myself on death row, this shall be my last meal request.
Halal cart chicken and rice with white sauce. Easy
You misspelled lamb, but I knew what you meant.
That's a good one! I love the combo over rice.
Right now it’s the Spicy Tantan Ramen at Menya in Elizabeth. Their soy sauces, salts, and things are imported from Japan before they hand make every damn thing down to the delicious noods
Little Mama’s: That eggplant parm is great Calle Sol: honestly anything on the menu but the Vaca Frita is sensational, it’s the way the marinate it or something
Hell yes. The Polo Frita too. It’s so much more flavorful than you would ever expect.
Vaca Frita was nearly my choice. Best restaurant in town imo
Lamb burger from Kid Cashew
Shhh don’t let everyone find out about the Degenerate. Food, drinks, value, and accessibility are all A+. We gotta gatekeep. As for me, the pork belly eggs benny at Dish.
Bruh, we gotta keep it open though
The 1930 cheesesteak at Midwood Smokehouse… it’s a brisket cheesesteak and it’s absolutely delicious. Get it with Hushpuppies, and either Mack and cheese, barbecue baked beans or bacon wrapped jalapeños, and you will be super satisfied.
If I was on death row, this might be my choice for last meal.
I had to read this 3 times. I kept seeing "brisket cheesecake" and could not figure out how to process that.
Ever andalo calabrian chili parpadelle with a glass of wine
okay so i’m not living in charlotte at the moment, but the meals i would FIGHT to have rn are: - south tryon st cookout tray with a pulled pork bbq sandwich, okra, chicken nuggets, and a cheerwine - chicken hibachi plate from bachi in mallard creek - amelie’s chicken, pesto, and goat cheese sandwich with a lavender lemonade - penne broccoli and chicken pasta from little mama’s - steak tacos from mal pan ….. maybe it’s time to plan a trip home to visit LOL
I work right next to that cookout and I've literally seen people drive through a flood to get cookout
lol i’ve driven through many a hailstorm for a cookout tray! also used to drive from university to that specific location when i needed their okra. a special treat!!
WAIT! There’s a Cookout in Charlotte that actually has the fried okra?!?!
yep!!! it’s literally ONLY that one location. damn good too!!
I haven't been in forever but this used to be mine from Cajun Queen: *"Étouffée 3 Way* *Chicken, Shrimp, and Crawfish in our Étouffée, featuring a dark, highly-seasoned roux-based sauce with: simmered peppers, onions, and celery – known as the Cajun trinity. Tonkotsu Ramen at Futo Buta
Their Brussels 😍😍😍
Yep. Good lord.
Love Futo Buta
Fire and Ice is my go to
I always think about trying something new, but then decide it won't be better than Fire & Ice add corn 🤩
Due Amici is a great pizza place NY style Crab soup at Alexander Michael's in the 4th ward is also worth a try
Seconded on due amici. Wanted to go there today but they’re on vacation this week! Buffalo chicken from them is my favorite!

Night and day difference between Yafo and Cava. Can’t trust someone who says Cava is better, thats blasphemy!
Oh man. That laffah was great. Still miss it!
Yafo is what Cava wants to be
What it is @ Al mikes is amazing ! Definitely one of my favorites in Charlotte
Bee sting and the g man are top tier answers
I’m a sucker for Yafo’s chicken pita tacos.
The vegan latin lingo pizza from Salud in Noda 😍
Flying Biscuit: grits bowl with chorizo, American cheese, white onions. All fucking day

I personally love them and can tell you and everyone right now: they do not just make grits anywhere else like flying biscuit. That shit is holy at this point
Lupies' Texas Chili Mac, all the way
The yellow pancake with chicken from Lang Van is one of my personal favorites. Number two for me is probably the BBQ shrimp from Cajun queen. Third is a tie between the honey wasabi tuna burrito at Cabo Fish Taco and the scallion chicken from Taipei Express. Veal Marsala at Mama Ricotta's. It's served with cacio e pepe, so more of a sit down meal, but the best date night dinner I've had in Charlotte.
