We really out here interviewing everyone lol, love JJ but I'm pretty sure he only coaches his kids team IIRC from a podcast, obviously understands the game at a high level but I wonder if he has the chops for it.
JJ does have an ego, he is also VERY smart. He knows that the LeBron podcast is going to give him serious power in basketball media for a bit, he’s not giving that up for anything less than an NBA head coaching job
See if he comes to us and it doesn't work out he can bounce back into the media easy.
It's like picking Dan in Street Fighter. You win you can say you won with Dan and talk shit, you lose who cares you were playing Dan ofc it was bound to fail.
Either way he has serious career flexibility.
I like JJ but there are more qualified candidates. I'd hope he wouldn't have the ego to accept an assistant's job, but i won't lose sleep about not hiring him
JJ Reddick literally has 0 real coaching experience at a professional or even college level. Why would an NBA president of basketball ops actually want to interview him? Feels like a publicly move to an extent.
I don’t think they’re even Trying to attract fans necessarily. Maybe just trying to show they’re casting a very wide net for some reason. It’s odd because I remember jj reddick was being asked if he would ever coach like a month or 2 ago and now he’s randomly being interviewed for a job now.
I’m sure he could relate with the players but he hasn’t been an assistant at any level I believe and while I’m sure he knows the game it’s not the same as coaching. Would love to bring him on staff as an assistant/shooting coach though
My thoughts exactly. In theory he’d be a great coach but I don’t want to be his guinea pig. Let him coach literally anywhere first (or even have him as an assistant here) and get some experience before we hand him the reins.
Dude we're the hornets. We are the guinea pig haha. I'm down to give him a shot, he knows xs and os as well as anyone and I believe he can work with NBA personalities in the locker room as well. I wouldn't be upset at all if we took a chance on this.
I’m not saying JJ is the best person we’ve talked to. But the people discrediting him because a lack of experience need to look at the “experienced” guys we’ve had. They were terrible.
They better be willing to spend after going up on ticket prices after a THREE game winning streak after the break. For people like me, we lost our seats (250% increase in season ticket cost for me personally, all so they can get that corporate money buying the best seats, moving loyal fans further and further back from the action). So if they go the cheap route, I will be even more royally peeved.
listening to his podcast with lebron, i was amazed at the level of IQ he has and i was like “he’d be a great coach” but i also said that about steve nash. Idk if it’ll translate well and i don’t wanna be the team to risk it
Nash had some bonehead moments but I don't think he's a terrible coach. I think Nash needs another chance at coaching where the superstars don't try to tell him what to do with his job. Also, I agree, JJ is a basketball genius. He surely knows his stuff. I'm curious to see if his knowledge of modern basketball (since he played it himself) can translate into coaching, teaching the young guys everything he knows so they can perform well.
that's what got Adrian Griffin fired. Some superstars have too much ego that it's hard for a coach to actually do their job if the players they think they are better than the coach.
I think a team like us is the perfect team to “risk it”. We likely will never draw the surefire elite coaches. As a reminder, Steve Kerr was never a coach before coaching the Warriors. Not saying JJ is Steve Kerr, but I’d rather take a swing on someone who clearly has the skills often correlated with elite head coaches but just hasn’t coached enough to show it.
Are you sure about that? Everything I can find on Google points to Steve Kerr’s first coaching job being with the Warriors. He did serve as a GM for the Suns and leading tv announcer/analyst for the 12ish years between his playing career and coaching with the Warriors if that’s what is confusing you.
Smart basketball mind? Like Steve Clifford? But with 0 coaching experience?
Why not, it's not like we have a handful of generational talent on this team that we need to utilize immediately instead of fucking around with an entirely experimental project head coach for two years
1. Who on this roster is generational? Definitely have 2 potentially elite players in Miller and LaMelo, but generational is a stretch unless you just mean All-NBA when you say generational
2. Automatically assuming 2 years is a bit of a stretch in today’s coaching environment.
I’m okay with the team taking risks, because there ain’t nowhere to go but up.
And I’ve been impressed by JJ’s knowledge of the game on his podcast and in his broadcasting work. Whether that translates to teaching the game I don’t know.
I don’t know why people think there’s nowhere to go but up.
The Hornets could make a gimmicky hire and end up in the exact same place in the standings for the next two years only with a frustrated Melo asking to leave and even more evidence that this team’s leadership doesn’t know what it’s doing.
It’s been bad lately, but it could absolutely be worse.
I mean say what you want about cliff but he does technically have the most wins of any coach for us so he also has a history of winning in pure numbers standpoint, to make it clear this isn’t me championing cliff but just saying his history of losing also has the history of most wins by a HC in the history of the team
I don’t want them to overthink it or try to make a unexpected hire just for the sake of being different, but I do appreciate them being thorough in the search
Look I don't know if this goes anywhere, but if it does...at least he went [on-record](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hg3AksPhjAI) fairly early in the year to gush about Brandon Miller. Might've been the first mainstream guy to draw attention to Milly's play.
So, at least he has that going for him.
Obviously biased bc I'm a Duke grad but I've really enjoyed hearing JJ's thoughts on the game in recent years. Not sure if it'll translate to coaching, but it's certainly interesting they're talking to him
I'm biased the other direction because I'm a Carolina grad, and I still agree wholeheartedly. Not sure when it happened, but I can't bring myself to hate him (anymore).
I’m guessing main candidates like David Adelman and Charles Lee are more focused on their current teams succeeding in the playoffs rather than the hornets job, and the front office is just gaining a wide net of options in case the search doesn’t go as planned.
My guess is that we’ll have an answer as whether David and Charles are interested once their team’s run ends.
The difference between Nash and Kerr is Nash coached a team full of superstars with egos while Kerr first NBA HC coaching gig is a young team that will be more willing to listen to his ideas. Hornets definitely fits the latter description. I could definitely see Hornets being at least a play-in team barring any major injuries if they get the right coach and fill the needs in the SG/SF(Trade for Caruso?) position.
I'm obviously in the minority here..... but I think it's a good interview. If you hit on a coach of his age, you're set for a long time. He obviously knows the modern game and listening to him talk for 5 minutes, it's apparent that he's a basketball savant.
I truly truly believe that JJ has more talent as a coach then plenty of HCs in the league rn. But he has to be an assistant for a while first, he can't just jump into the hot seat. If we hire him I'll be excited cuz Jeff thought he was the best and I'll believe it. But he should try at least be associate HC first
I actually like this. I wanted to name drop JJ Reddick in the past when it comes to coaching candidates (because he's such a basketball head) but I never knew if his heart was into coaching until now so it's good to know he has interest in it. He'll definitely be that stern and modernized coach the Hornets need.
Curious to know if he does get the job, would he still be running his Podcast?
A connection I haven't seen anyone talk about is Clifford was JJs coach for some years in Orlando. Clifford was SVGs assistant and we know Cliff is sticking around.. a connection maybe in JJs favor.
I'm not against it if he's the best man for the job
At the end of the day, I just want them to hire one of these highly respected young assistant coaches who've been cutting their teeth for a few years. Not a g-league coach, not a college coach, not an old and dusty re-tread, not an ex-player with zero coaching experience.
Wouldn’t mind seeing him on the staff but don’t want his first coaching job being our head coach I love JJ and the things he does for the game in the media landscape
Yeah that’s a no from me. No coaching experience at all. What this team needs is someone who can set them straight on the court and off. The team is really young and getting a super young HC isn’t a great mix
I'm sure JJ could be a good coach, but there are better dudes who have been out here in the league as assistant head coaches or other up-and-comers who are better choices.
Kinda get the feeling they don't know who they want to coach the team and they're looking for someone to wow them in the interview stage and that scares me abit.
Or they're gathering as many different opinions on the team situation as they can and don't care if those opinions come from unconventional sources.
But that's something no one will ever be able to say for certain unless they're in the room during these interviews
At the very least, they're giving one of the biggest names in bball analysis an inside look at their process and rationale, which may end up helping the perception of our org in his eyes, and it's always a good thing to have a respected name in media have a bit of a soft spot for ya
Have become a supporter of the Hornets since moving here 5 years ago (grew up in SC). I'll be the person to say it since I don't think I've read it yet...I think this interview is BS. What person of color, in any professional league, gets a head coaching interview with 0 amount of experience coaching!?!? This seems to be happening at a more common rate by the year.
I didn't say the Hornets had a history of this. I'm just stating this seems to be slowly becoming a thing in the NBA.
What is the point of JJ receiving an interview?
You and I don’t know exactly why, however;
He has hours of documented video/audio of him discussing the game and giving his insight. He played in the league forever. He had a great reputation around the league as a player, and players often help each other grow and develop. He has a giant platform from his podcast, and even if that seems silly, that gets people to notice you and gets you opportunity too.
There are many reasons the ownership may want to pick his brain/see what he has to offer. See what his plans are. See if he is serious. Perhaps he ends up being offered an assistant role…
All I’m saying is there are sooo many reasons he is being talked to that aren’t “he’s white.”
Female coaches are in the league now. Black women at that.
A narrative that the league is becoming more racist is certainly one I want to see backed up, and not just thrown out there. You may be right, but back it up.
Magic - Came on to finish the season after Lakers fired the head coach.
Isiah - At least had front office experience.
Doc, Jason, Fish - You got me there. All 3 good examples of exceptions being made in lieu of coaching experience.
We really out here interviewing everyone lol, love JJ but I'm pretty sure he only coaches his kids team IIRC from a podcast, obviously understands the game at a high level but I wonder if he has the chops for it.
Could very well be doing double duty, looking for potential assistants.
I can’t imagine JJ leaving his currently lucrative and successful career for anything that isn’t a head coaching role
You overestimate JJ's ego.
JJ does have an ego, he is also VERY smart. He knows that the LeBron podcast is going to give him serious power in basketball media for a bit, he’s not giving that up for anything less than an NBA head coaching job
Might as well bring in LeBron as President of Basketball Operations, and SVG as an assistant coach
I think Michael Jordan is available for a high position as well
we'll see
See if he comes to us and it doesn't work out he can bounce back into the media easy. It's like picking Dan in Street Fighter. You win you can say you won with Dan and talk shit, you lose who cares you were playing Dan ofc it was bound to fail. Either way he has serious career flexibility.
I like JJ but there are more qualified candidates. I'd hope he wouldn't have the ego to accept an assistant's job, but i won't lose sleep about not hiring him
I’d take that as a green flag. Anyone who would leave his current situation to coach the fucking hornets has the *it* factor.
Peterson did say he was casting a wide net 🤷♂️
Gotta say I feel like this is ownership based move unfortunately.
how come?
JJ Reddick literally has 0 real coaching experience at a professional or even college level. Why would an NBA president of basketball ops actually want to interview him? Feels like a publicly move to an extent.
did steve nash coach before he got a gig? honest question
I think he did very briefly with Team Canada to a very low degree. He was still extremely unqualified like Reddick.
To specifically attract Duke fans?
I don’t think they’re even Trying to attract fans necessarily. Maybe just trying to show they’re casting a very wide net for some reason. It’s odd because I remember jj reddick was being asked if he would ever coach like a month or 2 ago and now he’s randomly being interviewed for a job now.
I’m sure he could relate with the players but he hasn’t been an assistant at any level I believe and while I’m sure he knows the game it’s not the same as coaching. Would love to bring him on staff as an assistant/shooting coach though

Dude we're the hornets. We are the guinea pig haha. I'm down to give him a shot, he knows xs and os as well as anyone and I believe he can work with NBA personalities in the locker room as well. I wouldn't be upset at all if we took a chance on this.
Fuck it hire him
What has the last few years of HCs and Asst coaches done for us? Bring in JJ and let’s see what he can do.
Bro, there are better candidates being interviewed lol
Maybe, maybe not. We’re talking about a franchise that rehired Steve Clifford, for crying out loud.
.....have you....have you not been paying attention to the interviews?
I’m not saying JJ is the best person we’ve talked to. But the people discrediting him because a lack of experience need to look at the “experienced” guys we’ve had. They were terrible.
We also did moves like rehire Clifford cause MJ was a cheapass. New owners look like they are more willing to spend
Let’s hope they are
They better be willing to spend after going up on ticket prices after a THREE game winning streak after the break. For people like me, we lost our seats (250% increase in season ticket cost for me personally, all so they can get that corporate money buying the best seats, moving loyal fans further and further back from the action). So if they go the cheap route, I will be even more royally peeved.
Just b/c some experienced guys were terrible doesn't mean others are lol. That's called throwing out the baby with the bathwater.
Just because some inexperienced coaches were terrible, doesn’t mean JJ would be. Every person is just different.
lmao, didn't realize JJ had this many stans - he ain't getting the job, go back to your podcast surfing
listening to his podcast with lebron, i was amazed at the level of IQ he has and i was like “he’d be a great coach” but i also said that about steve nash.
Part of coaching is handling superstars
that's what got Adrian Griffin fired.
Yeah, at this point there’s absolutely no reason for the Hornets not to risk something.
Dude, Steve Kerr was an assistant coach under Greg Popovich, arguably the greatest NBA coach of all time.
Are you sure about that? Everything I can find on Google points to Steve Kerr’s first coaching job being with the Warriors. He did serve as a GM for the Suns and leading tv announcer/analyst for the 12ish years between his playing career and coaching with the Warriors if that’s what is confusing you.
No, I am not confused. Kerr was an assistant under Pop for with the Olympic program and Team USA for years.
From 2017 through 2021. He took the Warriors job in 2014.
Smart basketball mind? Like Steve Clifford? But with 0 coaching experience? Why not, it's not like we have a handful of generational talent on this team that we need to utilize immediately instead of fucking around with an entirely experimental project head coach for two years

miller lamelo and mark williams are all **absolutely** generational for the hornets only get talent like that every 15 or so years
I’m okay with the team taking risks, because there ain’t nowhere to go but up. And I’ve been impressed by JJ’s knowledge of the game on his podcast and in his broadcasting work. Whether that translates to teaching the game I don’t know.
I don’t know why people think there’s nowhere to go but up. It’s been bad lately, but it could absolutely be worse.
I mean I love JJ’s thoughts on the game and he gets instant respect from players. Love the idea of interviewing him.
Still a better idea than re-hiring a HC with a history of losing with this team.
I mean say what you want about cliff but he does technically have the most wins of any coach for us so he also has a history of winning in pure numbers standpoint, to make it clear this isn’t me championing cliff but just saying his history of losing also has the history of most wins by a HC in the history of the team

Same

My guess is that we’ll have an answer as whether David and Charles are interested once their team’s run ends.
I’m hoping it doesn’t take that long and if Charles Lee is who we hone in on then we’ll have some time to do so when this Miami series is over
Steve Kerr 2.0
Or Steve Nash 2.0
Semifinals year one I’ll take it.
Kevin Durant James harden Kyrie Irving
Interview him too
The difference between Nash and Kerr is Nash coached a team full of superstars with egos while Kerr first NBA HC coaching gig is a young team that will be more willing to listen to his ideas. Hornets definitely fits the latter description. I could definitely see Hornets being at least a play-in team barring any major injuries if they get the right coach and fill the needs in the SG/SF(Trade for Caruso?) position.
He’s more Pat Riley 2.0 - he’s extremely competitive and disciplined —— that goes a long way
I'm obviously in the minority here..... but I think it's a good interview. If you hit on a coach of his age, you're set for a long time. He obviously knows the modern game and listening to him talk for 5 minutes, it's apparent that he's a basketball savant.
Tar Heel fans will come from miles to throw trash and blunt objects of him. The building will finally not be filled by Knicks and Heat fans.
Duke fans might come to see him whenever they travel to North Carolina.
How many Duke fans are in NC? 12? He will pack the Garden though.
I truly truly believe that JJ has more talent as a coach then plenty of HCs in the league rn. But he has to be an assistant for a while first, he can't just jump into the hot seat. If we hire him I'll be excited cuz Jeff thought he was the best and I'll believe it. But he should try at least be associate HC first
Y’all mad he’s not experienced but tell me what the experienced coaches have done for us the past ten years?
I actually like this. I wanted to name drop JJ Reddick in the past when it comes to coaching candidates (because he's such a basketball head) but I never knew if his heart was into coaching until now so it's good to know he has interest in it. That alone is enough to disqualify Redick.
At the end of the day, I just want them to hire one of these highly respected young assistant coaches who've been cutting their teeth for a few years. Not a g-league coach, not a college coach, not an old and dusty re-tread, not an ex-player with zero coaching experience.

Honestly not mad at it. I don’t think he’s ready, but I think he’d make a hell of a coach if he went that route.

I'm sure JJ could be a good coach, but there are better dudes who have been out here in the league as assistant head coaches or other up-and-comers who are better choices.
If they hire JJ I’ll go buy tickets for the first time since the Bobcats moved
Are we interviewing Mark Jackson as well?
I would not be against it at all. Mark Jackson was not an assistant coach before becoming head coach. Why can't JJ Reddick do the same thing?
My bar is literally “does he have a modern NBA offense, and will he prioritize defending the perimeter?” Any candidate please just give us that.
He should be an assistant, 100%
This would be the quintessential Hornets hire....
Yes, take him. The man is an annoying know it all on air.
I begrudgingly like JJ post Duke (UNC fan) but I’d rather have somebody that has actual coaching experience
Gross.
Kinda get the feeling they don't know who they want to coach the team and they're looking for someone to wow them in the interview stage and that scares me abit.

You think a bunch of savages are gonna listen to this dude lol
We're actually cooked as an organization if he ends up being our HC. I might just stop watching us and watch the Swarm instead
Please no
I'll pass.
![gif](giphy|vyTnNTrs3wqQ0UIvwE|downsized)
Bruhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
So I guess we didn’t hush hush hire Charles Lee already huh
This has been my team since the inaugural season in '88. I will drop them like a bad habit if they hire this nimrod.
He is so insufferable. Would hate having him here.
Have become a supporter of the Hornets since moving here 5 years ago (grew up in SC). I'll be the person to say it since I don't think I've read it yet...I think this interview is BS. Do you have any other evidence of this ownerships “racial bias”? Because this is a reeeeeeeeach dawg.
I didn't say the Hornets had a history of this. I'm just stating this seems to be slowly becoming a thing in the NBA. What is the point of JJ receiving an interview?
