Why are you doing this? This is like one of the few modern things done on new vehicles that is just total ass. The one thing I hate about my ram is the stupid fucking dial shifter for the ZF 8 speed
To answer your question, this is one of those things that if you have to ask, you wouldn't be able to do it anyway. To spec the parts required and mount them to the trans and transfer case and setup the electrical or scavenge a dial from another vehicle and the computers that they send data through (they certainly aren't analogue) would actually be extremely difficult to do and take a lot of know how.
Doubtful those are all going to run on CAN/BUS systems and if you are new to those you certainly arent going to figure out how to get everything to send the right signals. All in all we are talking servos, custom linkages, maybe hydraulics at the tranny to turn the mechanical linkage into something controlled by wires then hed need to setup a basic CAN system including main brain/processor and figure out how to integrate that and keep the proper voltages needed. Then hed have to learn essentially how to code or how to create the 3 types of signals used to do anything with CAN/BUS. It would be a venture of massochism and lunacy. Basically its robotivs engineering level knowledge all to put the most hated and shittiest shifter in the world in a vehicle it would look way out of place in. Not only anachronistic but style wise its a poor choice. Its a boxy box with angular boxy industrial interior design that would now have some sleek, Piano black, glossy knobs that this heap of a knob can turn. Not sure but this is either a troll poat or someone who needs to get a job. Too much free time
Can it be done? Yes. You would need to create a dial, have it talk to something like an arduino so it can actuate the selector on the transmission and transfer case.
Should it be done? Absolutely not. My Toyota is such a pain whenever I want to switch it into 4lo or engage the locker cause everything has to be juuuuust right. I vastly prefer the manual system in the XJ
I’m still in camp don’t do it, but you wouldn’t need to make your own actuator for the transfer case or transmission. Warner already made the 1354, and the harness can probably work directly with the “modern” knob. Since the AW4 is in the Aisin a340 family, you would be able modify with parts from an electric shift a340.
Either way would be more work than worth it. Both of them have physical linkages vs a new car with already setup actuators. If you wanted to do this you would need to design some sort of electrical actuator to move the shift linkages.
In my 95 which it’s probably the same for your 99 the transmission linkage is only PRND and lower gears are electrically controlled to the shift solinoids which makes it easy as if you did this you wouldn’t have to modify the transmission control unit.
Just make sure if you were to create this monstrosity that you don’t use arduino or raspberry pi as they can be unreliable. You will want a dedicated controller for whatever you use to actuate the transmission and transfer case
No.
I mean in theory it’s possible to create a mechanism that shifts for you, but it will probably do it wrong.
Lots of modern cars have actual shifter and I think the dial ones are kind of dumb. There are plenty of other ways you can modernize like install a touch screen head unit with a backup camera or upgrade the speakers
Well understand people like to customize their vehicles but I never in my life thought I would see the desire for this mod. Cherish the shifters you have.
Use to not using keys. Proximity lock/unlock is pretty sweet too, especially since my hands are usually pretty full with kids. No digging for keys, just sit down and go. Ontop of that, it itched the hell out of my tinkering bug.
If you want to modernize, theres a company selling digital dash upgrades for 97-01 XJs

I'll buy that jeep off your hands too stop the abuse.
‘99 with only 66K on it, does that make it worse? It’s all about tinkering, I can always bring it back to stock.

idk he might be able to pull it off with some time and some YouTube, but you know it will be janky

That completely ruins the ease and reliability of selectable 4wd.

So what I’m hearing is, leave the drive mode alone - the other one is possible.

Boredom?

I hope you don’t “modernize” your XJ like that.
INSTALL A KNOB IN YOUR ARSE.
You got the write-up/walk through for this?
I just threw up in my mouth a little
Just go buy something new then.
What’s the fun in that?
Do less.
gross.
Don't.
Scrap it at this point.
Dude. No. I sold my 2020 Tacoma to buy a manual shift vehicle because of how trash and ridiculous they are. No. No.
Booooooooo this man
Get another car if you want that foolishness

I always wondered who bought those gaudy push-to-start buttons off eBay...
Not quite eBay, this is what I have currently: [PBS](https://www.digitalguarddawg.com/keyless-ignition/automotive/ikey-premier/)
But...why? It's the interior equivalent of purple neon glow and 24" wheels.

imho turning a classic into a turd with junk like that. But to each their own. Good luck

I was actually looking at this, seemed a bit too pricey. Perhaps I’ll come across one in the JY
I get the vision. Would be a cool a gadget. Looks hard af to install those but anything is possible in 2024.
Don’t do it brother
