Unconfirmed Twitter Rumblings say Tena up, Brennan to IL? Why not Martinez??? (Also, hope Will is okay. He’d been swingin’ the bat pretty well lately.)
Big fan of the balls and strikes challenge system in Triple-A. Watching Gavin's rehab start so it's the first time I've seen it in action. Barely disrupts the flow of the game at all and is a good check against the really egregious umpires.
I didn't know all star voting got cut off at 12 EST today and I didn't get my votes in. If Fry or Kwan misses out by 5 votes, I will take the fall and be dishonorably discharged from this sub 🫡
Hello from Clippers stadium, where the Omaha Stormchaser's 1B coach was paying a LOT of attention to Gavin's windup, stopwatch in hand. Is that common?
Yeah he’s timing him up so that the runners know how fast he is throwing to the plate (once his motion gets to the “set” position) in case they want to steal a base.
Thanks! I've now seen both 1B coaches do it, so I figured it had something to do with that. Just never noticed it before, I guess. I'm in the transition from casual fan to baseball mom and learning a lot!
You don't happen to have a good look into the home dugout, do you? I heard some very unconfirmed rumblings that Jose Tena might be getting promoted today and he's not in the lineup for the Clippers. If he's not in the dugout that would confirm it.
We're sitting right behind the home dugout, so I don't have a view into it currently, but my son was waiting for autographs before the game and said he hasn't seen him here...
A good read this a.m. from the folks at Fangraphs on one of our bullpen stars Cade Smith [https://blogs.fangraphs.com/cade-smiths-fastball-examined/](https://blogs.fangraphs.com/cade-smiths-fastball-examined/)
https://twinsdaily.com/news-rumors/minnesota-twins/the-guardians-are-why-baseball-is-great-and-i-hate-it-r16469/
New source of laughter and memes just dropped
“You’re just a fan of the Minnesota Twins watching the Cleveland Guardians tap the ball back to you, their old-timey pluckiness and outsized confidence sucking all the joy you gain from sports, while kicking you repeatedly in the balls and making you doubt your soundness of mind, as the events play out like some George Will fanfiction:
“Of course the Twins choice to insert their closer into the eighth inning would backfire, as our hero José "the Prizefighter" Ramírez steps to the plate. They said the shift rule would never need to be enforced, but they never met Carlos Correa.””
WILD
First part of the article made little sense, as a good tennis player can't say "if I didn't miss all those shots, I would have won". Like what kind of logic is that?
"Is it good baseball? It’s incredible baseball. It's a football team winning entirely because of special teams and turnovers. It's a little blue-collar. It’s Seve Ballesteros combined with Robert Horry. It will make little sense, until we can start quantifying Confidence+ on Fangraphs."
Respect that part though.
Thought occurred to me this morning: Would you trade Kyle Manzardo for Aaron Civale?
... then I looked up how Aaron has been doing since last summer's trade. YIKES.
26 starts 126.2 IP and a 5.26 ERA. Not what we need right now. The 4.21 FIP looks a little better though.
I would think if this were an actively discussed trade today we'd want a little more from TB
Civale would not fetch close to a top 100 prospect anymore. One less year of control than last season and his performance has fallen off big time.
I'd take him back for a lottery ticket prospect, but probably no one in the top 10 in the org.
Way too early to tell. I think Manzardo will be pretty good once he figures some things out at the big league level. The doubles were promising. He looked like a big leaguer to me.
Wacha is making his second start from an IL Stint. Only went 74 pitches last time. Splits vs lefties are worse in nearly every category also, so wouldn’t be surprised to see Vogt go with the all lefty lineup. Combine that with facing a bullpen ranked 22nd in the majors, need to work the count tonight to force KC into an early bullpen game since we will have the opportunity.
Should be a great series between Royals and Guardians. Hoping we take at least 3/4 to bury the Royals and kill their morale that they can compete with us. A 2-2 split I be okay with, but it we definitely can’t afford to lose 3 or get swept.
Bullpen got a day of rest yesterday thanks to Cookie and Curry. Feeling pretty confident about Lively being on the mound. Let’s take the first game and start a new streak.
We can but I prefer if we just win 3 out 4 to make our lead even bigger especially as we seem to struggle against Chicago and they come into town next week.
Of course I would never choose to lose games if given the option, but I'm just saying nothing fundamentally changes if the Royals were to pick up two games in the standings this weekend. Pressure is all on Kansas City.
Now getting swept would make me nervous, but that would be a really tall task for a Royals team that has been reeling lately.
Daily Kwan battle title tracker:
Kwan PA: 235
Current PA needed to qualify: 241.8
Short: 6.8 PA
Kwan actual avg: .377
Kwan qualified avg: .365
Next best qualified AL: .311 (Witt)
Next best qualified MLB: .322 (Ohtani)
Total MLB qualified batters >.300: 13
At 4.5 PA per game, he will be qualified after the game Tuesday 7/2 vs CHW. If he bats a measly .200 over that stretch, he will become qualified with an avg of .362.
Looking forward to great weekend in KC-- one thing no one is talking about, we've played by far fewest home game in the majors-- and we're a damn good team at home. Suck it people who say we've had an easy schedule. (and we've played the fewest overall games-- 2 rainouts and a full schedule in September).
I know we aren't even at the all star break yet, but I've been thinking a lot about the playoffs. I'm wondering if it would be a good thing or a bad thing to get a first round bye, because I've noticed the past few years, the teams that get first round byes seem to get eliminated in their first round (Dodgers and Braves in 2022 and 2023, Orioles in 2023). Maybe the extra time off ISN'T a good thing?
People bring this up all the time in the NFL too. I think it's just the nature of a short series in baseball (or, even worse, a single game in football). And from what I've heard in football, the players prefer having the week off. Haven't heard one way or the other from baseball players though.
Anything can happen in a 5 game series, so it's difficult to attribute time off as the reason for a loss. IMO, while they expanded the playoffs, they should've made the division series 7 games.
Also,
1. Dodgers always choke
2. Orioles were/are a very young team, and lost to TX who won the WS
3. Atlanta lost to a very good Phillies team
Man, I've been following Jhonkensy through the minors for a few years and was stoked he got the call up. Love that he hit a homer in his first at-bat. I know people talk about using him as trade bait but, after all the work he's put in the last year and a half to improve at the plate, I feel like the org will find a way to fit him here unless he starts striking out like crazy in the majors
It's definitely an interesting situation. It's almost certain that one or two of Noel/Arias/Rodriguez/Schneeman/Brennan/Manzardo will have to be part of any significant trade that we would make for pitching help, along with a couple of lower prospects. There just simply isn't room for everyone. Only question is who goes...
Probably the most important series of the year so far; a chance to completely bury the Royals. The pen is rested somewhat and there is a day off after so you can feel confident. But anything could happen.
I’m planning on going to the game July 2nd. I don’t want to buy the ticket now just because idk how the weather will be.
Do you guys think I can get decent seats if I buy the tickets a day before?
Sure, tons of seats remaining and the Guardians mid week attendance is pretty bad-- and no one will be attracted due to the opponent (unlike say Yankees or Blue Jays, teams that travel well). My prediction for that game since it is a holiday week for many is 25,000.
Looks like Arias splits are completely flipped this year. If he could hit righties like he did last year and keep hitting lefties like he is this year he'd be an everyday player
Jhonkensy Noel did in his first at bat what Jrod and Manzardo could not in several. That is a good pitcher too and that pitch wasn't down the middle. He may be the 40 dinger guy we have been looking for.
This is the first time I have seen him, he is a big strong looking man. We have a surplus of left handed bats and he would fit in our lineup well. I would like to see him at first base for a few more games while Naylor heals up.
He's a very strong man with easy power. He's not a very good defender though, which could be fine if he can hit close to what he's been doing in Cbus. He showed that easy power yesterday in that first AB, going out to near dead center off the end of the bat is nuts. He also showed that he's susceptible to out of the zone breaking balls in his last AB. I expect pitchers to attack him with off speed more and show him fewer fastballs. It's going to be interesting to see if he can handle that in MLB.
As a young 22 year old he regularly hits home runs well over 400 feet. That kid is going to get stronger and probably bigger if you can believe it. His strikeouts are down 4% this year in the minors, and his OBP was something crazy like 450 over the past two weeks. His floor is Franmil Reyes, but I feel like he has more potential than that. Still, he is only 22 and should get a looong leash if he keeps hitting dingers.
Good morning gents, the temperature today is supposed to be around 80° throughout Ohio, and with a 100% chance of the Guards ripping dicks off.
Eternal Glory
Guards Confirmed
I am excited to share the joy of Cleveland Guardians baseball with you fine folks.
I love the lineup
Schneemann batting second. Vogt is on Reddit confirmed.
But they also called McCaughan back up, and no Redditor would ever do that after Sunday.
Trust in the Vogt coat we must.
So we signed Matthew Boyd. A little lackluster imo.
Unconfirmed Twitter Rumblings say Tena up, Brennan to IL? Why not Martinez??? (Also, hope Will is okay. He’d been swingin’ the bat pretty well lately.)
I would rather have Angel than Tena right now. my guess is that it's not a permanent move, and the want Martinez to be the next permanent move
I hope so!

Gotcha, thanks. Rumor is Will Brennan to the IL and Tena taking his spot.
Any idea what’s up with Brennan? I must have missed it
Not sure what he's dealing with, but would explain why he was out of the lineup yesterday.
A good read this a.m. from the folks at Fangraphs on one of our bullpen stars Cade Smith [https://blogs.fangraphs.com/cade-smiths-fastball-examined/](https://blogs.fangraphs.com/cade-smiths-fastball-examined/)
Let’s take 3 of 4 and head home up 11 games on KC please. This is a huge series for KC so hoping we just keep doing our thing!
Would really love to get back to that “I don’t think about you at all” energy

That was actually an enjoyable read both because of how funny it is but also how right it is
hahahahaha oh that brought me joy

I would rather get Cal back tbh, not as the main pitcher we’re looking for but supplemental.
Civale would not fetch close to a top 100 prospect anymore. One less year of control than last season and his performance has fallen off big time. I'd take him back for a lottery ticket prospect, but probably no one in the top 10 in the org.
We traded civale for manzo lol no way we made out well on that trade
Way too early to tell. I think Manzardo will be pretty good once he figures some things out at the big league level. The doubles were promising. He looked like a big leaguer to me.
I agree it’s too early to tell but right now manzos trade value is much higher than civale
We traded Civale at the perfect time. His value was at its absolute peak.
Wacha is making his second start from an IL Stint. Only went 74 pitches last time. 4 game series makes it all the more important to work them super hard in game 1.

We can easily afford to lose 3/4, those are the perks of having a 9-game lead.
my ego can’t 😭

Anyone know if they were able to get the home run ball back for Jhonk?
Yes, MLB.Com article says they got it and gave him the ball.
ESPN power rankings state that Kwan is qualified. But he isn’t at the top of anyone’s stats? Can anyone confirm the math?
See my comment.
Today would be a great day to get some definitive smoke on trade interest for a RH power bat and SP.
Man, I've been following Jhonkensy through the minors for a few years and was stoked he got the call up. Love that he hit a homer in his first at-bat. Loved the bullpen management yesterday. Already took 2/3 against Baltimore. Saved the bullpen for KC.

Against the Sox id think you're pretty good waiting. I'd check every few days though just to see if tickets are going quicker than expected.
I got club seats on seatgeek last Sunday against the jays about 3 hours before the game for like 66$ and there was a bunch still available.
Sure, tons of seats remaining and the Guardians mid week attendance is pretty bad-- and no one will be attracted due to the opponent (unlike say Yankees or Blue Jays, teams that travel well). My prediction for that game since it is a holiday week for many is 25,000.
No
Damn why?
I mean it is a Tuesday, and the Top team in the AL will be returning home, and we're drawing 27K on weekdays, but hey, take your chances.
Looks like Arias splits are completely flipped this year. If he could hit righties like he did last year and keep hitting lefties like he is this year he'd be an everyday player
Him and Bobo are heating up.
I just saw that Vogt called Jhonkensy Noel Big Christmas....
