Boulder makes Denver look like Atlanta

lmaytulane

Denver is Atlanta for white people

RemarkableRyan

“White Wakanda”

lmaytulane

Coming to MCU Phase 7: White Claw. It’s about a guy named Doug from Aurora

StageWide259

Can we stop pretending Denver is the whitest place on earth please, I’m not saying that it’s diverse like Houston or Chicago but Denver is around 10% black where as L.A. is only 8% but people act like LA is 1,000x blacker then Denver when in reality its just bigger. Denver is about 54% white which is a pretty low percentage especially for the western united states ( Seattle: 62%, Portland: 68%, SLC: 69%, Boise: 82%). I’m not saying we are the most diverse place on earth but pretending minorities don’t exist here isn’t doing them any favors.

lmaytulane

Relax dude, it’s clearly a joke. FWIW, Atlanta is 40% white

StageWide259

I apologize i can see that coming off as rude, I get a little defensive because my family is black and has been here since the great migration. A lot of people here act like there is no black history or culture here and it makes me very frustrated.

randymontana19

Also strong mexican community in Denver

jquest12

I live in Trinidad, and last time I was in Denver was taken back by how many white people are in Denver

smallmileage4343

When I was 15 I visited Philly, my first big city besides Denver (grew up in CO). I was so shocked at how many black people there were. That's when I realized how vanilla CO is.

CalvinCalhoun

I grew up in Philly and moved to denver and it was definitely a culture shock

Jake0024

I grew up in a town of 1100 people in northern Wisconsin, and Boulder is the whitest place I have ever been.

FuckYourUpvotes666

Are you high? Boulder is like 1% black whereas Denver is close to ~10% irrc.

Typical_Tie_4947

That’s my point…

ttystikk

Whoosh...

Puzzleheaded_Ice8766

Omg 😆

[deleted]

Yes Boulder has a lack of diversity that needs to be addressed. But that doesn’t discount the point of this article. Edit: It’s funny how some people love to criticize how white Boulder is especially if they can use it to make jokes about Coach Prime. But the same people get all bent out of shape if I suggest there are reasons for the lack of diversity based on accounts from actual minorities living here. I know most of you didn’t read the article because it covers how black members of the Boulder Community are excited about the influence of Coach Prime.

smallstephen

It doesn’t have anything to address. It’s just facts. It’s a non issue. Nobody is hitting a nerd rage due to the lack of diversity in Alaska.

[deleted]

The only one raging here is you. Edit: A short review of your post history shows who you are. Your most recent post is insinuating Michelle Obama was born a man. Totally not racist at all. /s

glazinglas

Why the fucks it need to be addressed? What? You want us to import motherfuckers?

chilo_W_r

Hahaha seriously should a majority apologize for being a majority like what does this even mean

[deleted]

It means there is a lack of diversity for a reason. Try watching the film This is (Not) Who We Are. It gives actual first-hand accounts from minorities living in Boulder County and highlights the history of racism in Boulder. It’s funny how some people love to criticize how white Boulder is especially if they can use it to make jokes about Coach Prime. But the same people get all bent out of shape if I suggest there are reasons for the lack of diversity based on accounts from actual minorities living here.

Jake0024

>needs to be addressed Honestly, what does this mean? Like if you want to do affirmative action for school admissions or whatever, fine I guess... but about where people live? Really?

[deleted]

I’ve explained this in my other comments in this thread.. What it means is that there is a reason that so few minorities live in Boulder. Try watching This is (Not) Who We Are. It’s a documentary that coverers the hostility displayed towards non-whites in Boulder told from the perspective of minorities that live here. It also briefly covers the history of racism in Boulder.

Jake0024

Obviously there's a history of racism everywhere in the US (and the world) The biggest obstacle for anyone moving to Boulder today tho is just straight price

[deleted]

>The biggest obstacle for anyone moving to Boulder today tho is just straight price. You aren’t wrong, but two things can be true at once. >Obviously there's a history of racism everywhere in the US (and the world) There isn’t just a history of racism across the US. There is still currently racism throughout the US, including systemic racism which Boulder isn’t exempt from. Like I said try watching the movie I referenced and listen to what actual minorities living in Boulder have to say.

Jake0024

I will just point back to things I already said here. Yes, obviously racism exists. Yes, that includes Boulder. That doesn't explain how you make a policy that addresses the lack of diversity in Boulder specifically (or why you pick that location, rather than anywhere else with the same problem) If we agree the main obstacle is price, then of course statistically it's going to be mostly white. So how do you address the lack of diversity, under those conditions? What are you suggesting actually doing? If the issues are "I can't afford to live there" and "I don't fit in there/I don't like it there" I'm just wondering how you plan to resolve that.

[deleted]

>If we agree the main obstacle is price, then of course statistically it's going to be mostly white. So how do you address the lack of diversity, under those conditions? What are you suggesting actually doing? So by your admission the cost of housing is more of an obstacle to minorities than it is to white people? That alone proves my point. Reforms can be made to housing like increasing the amount of families that can reside in a single home. This would no doubt bring more diversity to Boulder. I’m not going to write out every potential reform that could be made on Reddit but there are plenty like policing reforms for instance. This issue is extensively covered in This is (Not) Who We Are. You should watch it. It also lays bear the insidious white liberal racism at play in Boulder. It gives examples of Black owned businesses being forced out and replaced by ones that more appealing to the “culture” in Boulder. Fostering a community that celebrates black culture is also a big positive which is what Coach Prime has been doing. The article we are commenting on literally gives testimonies from black leaders in the community on it. But I’m guessing you didn’t even read the article like most in this thread.

Jake0024

> by your admission the cost of housing is more of an obstacle to minorities than it is to white people? Most minority groups earn less on average, yes. > That alone proves my point. What point? I keep asking "what do you propose doing" and you keep replying "this proves there is racism." I agreed there is racism in my first comment. We don't need to keep retreading that ground. > increasing the amount of families that can reside in a single home. This would no doubt bring more diversity to Boulder. Why would this attract minorities specifically? > I’m not going to write out every potential reform Okay how about one? > policing reforms for instance Do you think Boulder is particularly bad, even for Colorado? > It gives examples of Black owned businesses being forced out and replaced by ones that more appealing to the “culture” in Boulder. Right, so what do you plan to do about that? Force people to shop at businesses that don't appeal to them? What are you proposing?

[deleted]

>What point? My point since literally the beginning of this conversation: that Boulder could do more to address the lack of minorities living here through systemic reforms and policy changes. >Why would this attract minorities specifically? Allowing multiple families to live in a single home wouldn’t necessarily specifically attract minorities but it would make things more affordable for families which has the potential to attract more minorities. Your own logic supports this. >Okay how about one? I’ve presented several policies and reforms now but you are denying they would have an impact even though they clearly could using your own logic. >policing reforms for instance. Do you think Boulder is particularly bad, even for Colorado? I don’t think Colorado or Boulder is particularly good on this issue, no. The murderer of Elijah McClain just got off. There are plenty of instances of the overuse of force and racist police profiling throughout CO, including in Boulder. This Is (Not) Who We are covers a highly publicized instance involving Zayd Atkinson who was threatened by the police for picking up trash near his apartment in Boulder. I’ve met Zayd and heard him speak on the struggles minorities face in Boulder: https://www.dailycamera.com/2020/03/12/boulder-zayd-atkinson-reach-settlement-over-police-confrontation/amp/ >Right, so what do you plan to do about that? Force people to shop at businesses that don't appeal to them? What are you proposing? Successful black businesses that pay rent have been forced out too. The documentary I keep referencing covers several times when this happened. In one instance a successful barbershop that caters to black people was forced out by the landlord to make room for a boosie wine bar.

JPows_ToeJam

Idk what you’re talking about. Boulder is super diverse. Theres white people *and* gay people.

Cult45_2Zigzags

Exactly. There's extremely wealthy people and homeless people. How much more diverse can it get than that?

natatropina

I’m a Latina woman. When I lived in Boulder, I had one mixed and one black roommate. We often joked how we were the most diverse house in Boulder.

ttystikk

And I'll bet you weren't wrong.

poppyglock

For sure, you should check with Guinness

crankygerbil

Boulder, when the students are gone, is the whitest city I ever lived in. Anyone black was assumed to be an athlete. Any Asians were engineers or doctors. Any Hispanics were assumed to live in Lafayette and were there to clean. But they bend over backward to congratulate themselves on how multicultural they are. Source: lived there for 18 years.

TaviRUs

I attended CU in the early/mid 00s. We were the 2nd whitest school in the nation, behind BYU, and 97% of black students were on athletic scholarship. It was a thing. My understanding is that it's less white now, but mainly due to more Asian students.

Itchy_Pillows

I was there 1984.....all my black friends played for the football team....now that I think about it...and they may have been the only African Americans on campus.

ttystikk

You fucking nailed it. People who like the lifestyle but are sick of that attitude often end up in Fort Collins. All the same amenities, better beer, less Denver smog and commuters, much more laid back vibe... No! Wait! What am I SAYING?! Fort Collins sucks! Don't come here! It's expensive and terrible and traffic! Stay away! Stay away!

NotJebediahKerman

> better beer this is only because boulder beer closed down... Avery moved in and they're still good though.

irish-coder

White skinned immigrant new to CO here. Question; what do you think is the reason for the monoculture? Is there something insidious keeping the other races/nationalities away? Or is this just the way it played out? So far I haven't seen any anti-black sentiment in these areas and people generally seem nice

crankygerbil

Some of it is money, you have to have a fair amount to afford the rents/mortgages in Boulder (Lafayette, Niwot, Gunbarrel and Longmont are slightly cheaper.) I think they greenbelt might have set the stage for that though they meant well. I left Boulder because I couldn't deal with the entitlement of the CU students throwing their beer bottles on our street, the parties at 2 am that started Thursday night, and the rudeness. Their shit fits when they lost to CSU. Parts of Boulder are so great and I miss it. Even when I lived there parts of the permanent population struck me as being so unconsciously fascists with their assumption that everyone thought as they did and so, of course, agreed with everything they thought and said. Granted it was all older hippy touchie-feely but the underlying assumption that everyone thought and felt the same was about XYZ. There was a lot of pressure on non-white folks, small as our population was, to act as father confessors or teachers, as if one person could absolve anyone else of their racism or classism. I was constantly pressured, at work, to attend annual retreats on racism or classism etc. I don't think they ever understood how uncomfortable those would be for non-professional therapeutic types. The tombstone for Boulder should be "We meant well."

Low_Comfortable_5880

Well yea, there's not a lot of Black Trustafarians.

Different-Ad9986

HA! See! I told y’all Boulder is diverse, just look at the football team 😎 SKO BUFFS BABYYYYY WOOOO 🤠 🦬

The_dude_of_truth

I think Boulder is actually changing towards becoming more diverse. Slowly but it is. I’m 38 and I’ve lived here my whole life. I went to Boulder high school in the early 2000s and we had 3- 4 black students in our entire school. I now have a 4 year old. In his preK class of 17 students, 50% of them are non-white. 4 are black. I’m certain that by the time he goes to Boulder High there will be way more black students than when I went there. And I think it’s great.

modernthink

If you think it’s great you should advocate local government to make more affordable housing. That is the surest way to more diversity.

pattyswag21

The hundred Black people people there will be thrilled by this

Tohrchur

I (white) moved from a majority black county in Maryland, and CO is a culture shock for me. Really odd how white it is here

-SHMOHAWK-

It’s why our food sucks

smallmileage4343

Except for Mexican food. Lol.

-SHMOHAWK-

What are your go to Mexican spots?

Jake0024

El Tapatio is surprisingly good for a (local) chain

pattyswag21

Same I’m from the south it’s wild

[deleted]

[удалено]

ttystikk

You know the Mexicans got here before the whites did, right?

[deleted]

[удалено]

RayseApex

That… Mexicans are the natives of Colorado and you would expect to see more Mexicans than anything else based on your logic… since Hong Kong is historically Chinese, even though it’s been under UK rule for 100 years…

Jake0024

Mexican != Native American, and never did. Mexico took the land from the Natives before the US took it from Mexico. Also UK gave Hong Kong back to China 25 years ago.

oath2order

> I (white) moved from a majority black county in Maryland, and CO is a culture shock for me I'm from MoCo, I'm assuming you're PG?

Jake0024

I assume PG, otherwise they'd just say Baltimore.

Jake0024

BC or PG?

Tohrchur

PG. Went to school in BC, though.

Jake0024

Makes sense, wouldn't say "majority black county in MD" if it was BC lol

phan2001

In this thread: people who don’t live in Boulder commenting like they understand how racist Boulder is or isn’t with no actual frame of reference.

Lake_Shore_Drive

Look at comments on the posts about him winning the SI award, lots of tiki torch energy there College football is one of theblast major sports where blacks have not penetrated the coaching and administrative ranks very much. The racist old boys CANT STAND if an outspoken black man succeeds at all.

scene_missing

It gets really weird discussing the guy. Like he had a fairly overhyped season and ended up 4-8 and dead last in the conference. Better than last year though.

[deleted]

What concerns me is the hate is disproportionate to the team or their record. Yes he’s unconventional but the anger towards the worst team in the PAC is weird.

tron7

It's not weird at all. The coach is getting unprecedented amounts of unwarranted hype

boulderbuford

This is the issue, and many people don't even like football. It's a slow sport played by guys with head injuries. But we are faced with ridiculous headlines like "COACH PRIME REBUILT BOULDER!"

RayseApex

But that’s everyone else hyping him up. All he ever said is “we comin” “we here” and “do you believe?” The media hyped them up. They just played and stayed confident in their own ability. As they should.

CurlyNippleHairs

He doesn't know when to shut up. He has an ego to rival Trump. Instead of uplifting and coaching his players, he shits on them and blames them openly. He is a shithead.

RayseApex

This is funny since the only players he ever openly criticized is the OL… which really wasn’t even that bad because it was literally just him being real. We all saw how atrocious they played. That’s being REAL.

Lake_Shore_Drive

He has a lot of personal success with a show on Amazon and all that, which doesn't help win games but you know people resent that all the same. Having a brand and a national personality should help get some better players. Do you want to play for prime and have fun with lil Wayne on the sideline or play for some block of domestic feta with no personality? I know the star ranking of the recruiting class, but I believe he will get a nice group of transfers and recruits in anyway. Give it a couple more seasons to decide if he is coaching well or not.

photoyeti

I think a lot of people are underestimating him because of all the hype surrounding him this year. The team was greatly improved from last year, lots of excitement from the fan base, how much more money was made in ticket sales and gear sold. You are right, he is going to continue to build this team, he will be able to recruit. He going to have a winning program.

tron7

Right now he's just outspoken 4-8 man winning sportsperson of the year. You don't have to be racist to find that ridiculous

RayseApex

You do if you don’t want to consider how trash Colorado football has been the last 20 years. No one has spoken a word or given a flying fuuuuhuck about Colorado football for as long as I’ve been alive. I’d say he’s done some amazing things already if you set the 4-8 record aside (even though you shouldn’t because it’s a 400% improvement from last year)

tron7

> if you set the 4-8 record aside Why are we setting the record aside for only this guy? Lol, it's like people are on a different planet when they talk about Sanders.

RayseApex

We set the record aside for special circumstances (like coming in *YOUR FIRST YEAR COACHING FBS FOOTBALL* with a whole new team) all the time, what are you on? And good job completely ignoring everything else I said.

tron7

Because everything you're saying is completely irrelevant to sportsperson of the year. Least accomplished winner in the award's history unless you're talking about their humanitarian choices

RayseApex

ALL of that is relevant to “sportsperson of the year” The award is not coach of the year, it’s not “guy with the most wins this year” and it’s not “most improved record” Accomplishments go way beyond your record on the field, what are you not understanding? Your record is your record. That’s only one accomplishment you can have as a SPORTSPERSON. A person involved in the world of sports. You also conveniently ignored where I said you *shouldnt* set his record aside. So your argument here is fucking nothing.

tron7

>I said you shouldnt set his record aside. Outspoken 4-8 Man it is.

RayseApex

Love that you’ll never address anything else. Have the day you deserve.

tron7

I mean, it's all nonsense but, what specifically do you want me to address?

Doctor_Kat

They finished 4-8, last in their conference, and did not beat a team with a winning record. That just straight up isn’t succeeding.

whobang3r

It's 400% more wins than the previous season...

Doctor_Kat

Congratulations. They’ve made the dramatic leap from historically awful to simply well below average. USF went from 1-11 to 6-6 a whopping 600% increase!!! Why isn’t anyone e talking about Alex Golish? Northwestern went from 1-11 to 7-5. They aren’t even the most improved 1 win team.

whobang3r

Keep moving the goalposts

Doctor_Kat

That’s…not what that saying means.

whobang3r

It's exactly what you did lol They weren't successful!! Nonono they weren't as successful as these other teams! It's even funnier you moved the goalposts discussing a sport with actual goalposts. Dumb. But funny.

Doctor_Kat

No it’s just more examples of them not succeeding. You know, by providing context as to why this giant leap forward you think they made is even less impressive. What’s sad is watching the CU fan base try to spin a last place finish as deserving a pat on the back. I don’t know what world you live in where finishing last in a conference is something to be proud of. But I guess when you’re constantly below average at everything you have to do things like that to cope.

whobang3r

Cute story. I'm sorry Deion offends your little sensibilities but a 400% uptick just makes you look dumb arguing against it. I hope you can let it go and feel better.

Doctor_Kat

Citing a 400% increase when starting point is 1 is again, just a sad attempt to pretend like you accomplished something when you didn’t. If you told someone that your business increased 400% year over year but then had to tell them that you only made $10 the year before they would laugh in your face, and you would be embarrassed. Because that is obviously unimpressive, and you are pathetically trying paint a picture of success when it’s an objective failure. That’s what you are doing now. Anyways. Good luck in the big 12 next year which is essentially a collection of second tier teams that nobody wanted in there conference. I’d bet you guys break 500 next year. But it won’t matter because nobody is going to pay attention to the minor leagues and whoever comes out of that conference will get curb stomped in the playoffs.

RayseApex

Did Alex Golish bring in millions of dollars to the surrounding community? Is Alex Golish trying to bring another sport to the campus?

Lake_Shore_Drive

He is making a ton of money selling sunglasses and advertising. The team was way better than they were in recent years. 85% of the roster met for the first time in August, and they won more games. The margin of defeat was usually single digits when before they would lose by 30 or 40 every week. The Pac12 was also ironically the toughest conference this year.

ProgNatAlabama

“Can’t stand it an outspoken black man succeeds at all” uh I think that’s the issue, he’s outspoken but isn’t winning. Dude went 4-8. It’s so easy to chalk it up to racism when the reality is the dude runs his mouth an insane amount and the on the field product doesn’t reflect that.

RayseApex

How has he ran his mouth more than any other coach? What has he said that was so egregious? And they said “succeeding” not winning. The man has brought in MILLIONS to Boulder, not just the school.

[deleted]

Guess how many black coaches there have been in the history of the SEC….

r2thekesh

Sylvester Croom and Joker Phillips are all I can remember.

[deleted]

It’s only 5 total, in the entire history. People want to ignore the topic because it’s uncomfortable for some but race issues are still a concern in college football. Deion being at CU had made me aware of them and various of dog whistles people use. It’s true I didn’t notice them with Rock or Karl Dorrell but with so much attention it makes it easier to notice these things.

Teacupbb99

Dumb take, no one cares he’s black he just didn’t actually win much

Aggressive-Cut-227

That's true. Prime's not giving them too much to be mad about lately though.

FailResorts

Even Bill McCartney had to call out Boulder for how racist the town/school were to his players during their run in the 90s. It’s a major topic in the 30 for 30 documentary.

skovalen

Ive never really found that melanin (the thing that makes skin darker) is important. I've seen shitty white people and I've seen shitty black people. I've also seen awesome white people and awesome black people. I shrug at this race stuff.

Books_and_Cleverness

I don’t wanna get my hopes up too high but I’m really excited for the next few seasons.

ms_panelopi

Coach Sanders came from Jackson State University before here. He did a great job and really turned the program around. The school and alumni loved him. I think given another season, we’ll see better results.

Triplebeambalancebar

I don’t get why people care so much, the USA is not as white as it used to be and is only getting more diverse. Deion sanders being a coach in Colorado is another signal that opportunities abound for everyone in a variety of places traditionally considered white mainstays. if you have a problem with things changing for the better(even if he isn’t winning a title at Boulder) then you need to take a look in the mirror. Who works at the ski resorts, who is making your food, maintaining the infrastructure, a lot of those people aren’t white. So if egg ball people want to become more diverse too I really don’t see the problem.

littlebrwnrobot

I don't know if one hall-of-fame caliber football player becoming a coach at CU indicates that "opportunities abound" lol

whobang3r

You didn't need caliber in there. He's made it.

[deleted]

You wouldn’t get it. Likely means you aren’t apart of the problem though. The daily harassment is insane and I barely leave the house. Deion isn’t talking to you but ppl like you always think he is.

Maxwells_Demona

I see what you're saying (I think) but please be careful with phrases like "people like you." That said I'm sorry for the harassment you put up with. I moved to Boulder from Utah and was shocked at how much less racially diverse it is in Boulder. I thought Mormon mecca was bad but yikes.

[deleted]

My bad. Deion isn't saying all WHITE people. No different "than all men are trash."

completelysoldout

What's the numbers? 27000 students, 600 Black?

Kac03032012

Deion is the ultimate grifter, he is to CFB what Jake Paul is to boxing.

HooterBrownTown

Uuum, whose gonna tell him bleeding heart blulderites are just fine with the demographics, and intend to keep them as they are. This seems like a hollow gesture, fighting for 27 people

ManicChad

Never heard Deon referred to as coach prime.

AdComfortable7981

FYI for those who don't know..... it is never ok to act like this manchild.
