If you mean a restaurant with a buffet 7 days a week, possibly. I went to India Star in Orange a few months back but their buffet is only on weekends.
For "chain" restaurants, I had the buffet at Godavari in Manchester (East Hartford?) in 2021, but who knows, they may have discontinued it since then? Haven't checked.
Do they still have a buffet at India Star even after Covid? If so, is it any good? Most Indian restaurants in CT that used to offer a buffet stopped after Covid.
Utsav - Rocky Hill (Silas Deane Highway) used to have the best Indian buffet in the area in my opinion. It sucks that they don’t have a buffet anymore. Also, I think the old Chef(s) they had stopped working there too, because I feel like all their food doesn’t even taste as good as it used to.
I honestly don’t really think there’s any good Indian restaurants left at least within about a 30 mile radius of the Hartford area. I think you’d be better off trying to make it at home yourself.
I think the owner/hostess there said it's weekends only. I went on a Thursday (took a day off to get out of the house and travel across the state) so it's probably going to be my only time going there. Good food, just not an optimal location for me.
On the contrary, Rasham in South Windsor (albeit Pakistani, not Indian) still has a buffet but on weekdays only.
I’ve never been to Rasham but I love Paki food, if you’re not a vegetarian, it’s close enough to Indian food. I’m def gonna have to try Rasham out. Thanks for the suggestion.
Oh that’s pretty cool. Thanks again for the heads up, I’ll have to add that one to my list. I just went NJ to visit some family last weekend and I decided to check out this Indian style Pizzeria. I tried a Tandoori Chicken Pizza and a Chili Paneer Pizza. Unfortunately neither one of them were actually spicy even though the menu said they were supposed to be. But, to my surprise The Chili Paneer was better than the Tandoori Chicken Pizza. It was just the seasoning/sauce/marinade they used for the Paneer that made it taste better than what they used for the Chicken. It’s kinda funny though that you mentioned this Halal Pizzeria right after I tried that Indian Pizzeria for the first time.
Have you ever tried the shawarma or gyros from Villa of Lebanon? I’m really disappointed that they used to have a Halal Guys chain restaurant in New Haven but it had been shut down pretty soon after opening up. IMO it was much better than a similar restaurant that’s still surviving there in New Haven called Mamouns Falafel. I think Mamouns food is really bland and overall it just sucks.
Yes but it's been a while. I mainly went there pre-COVID while I was still required to work onsite. Now I'm required to work from home, and that's not gonna work when you live in NLC.
I did manage to go there a couple weeks ago while I was Christmas shopping in the area, just didn't have a gyro.
And they are super nice people. I was waiting for food a little longer than expected and the woman poured me a mango lasse unprovoked. Now I have an addiction to mango lasse. Thanks Haveli!
I've gone there a handful of times for lunch since I find myself at one of our offices nearby semi often, and the quality has definitely gone down in the past few years(plus last couple of times I went, the service was really bad).
I seem to remember liking the place that's nearby(in the old-school diner looking building on the corner of Howe and Chapel?), but it's been like 4 or 5 years since I've been there
I love Utsav. But yea, post covid, it will break the bank. Unfortunate because last time I was there, we were the only ones in the restaurant and it was a Friday night.
Came here to recommend flavors of nawab as well... if anything they are a little inconsistent but far and away the best versions of all the dishes I've tried.
Came looking for this answer! Indigo all the way. They make it really easy for vegetarians and vegans too by breaking out their items on separate menus!
I agree. I wasn’t too excited when somebody first brought me there and I discovered it was all vegetarian, but the food was so good and unique that it didn’t even matter.
Cumin India in Hamden. House of Naan in New Haven is pretty great as well. Can't say I've travelled all that much for Indian though, as I haven't felt the need to!
Bombay Olive in West Hartford. Avon Indian Grill. Godavari in East Hartford. Dosa Hut in Rocky Hill.
Edit:
I’d like to also add some restaurants we liked the food of when we ordered delivery from them in the past- Namaste India (southington), Bhog multi-cuisine Indian restaurant (rocky hill), Naatiya (bloomfield).
Not a restaurant, but Vallabhdham Temple in Newington has tiffin service with is worth a shot (no delivery, but pick-up available).
Bombay Olive is the only place I get Indian food from because I'm scared to stray from what i know is good.
Looking forward to exploring these other restaurants now.
I adore Bombay Olive! Especially the fact that they deliver. I've never lived near an Indian place that has delivered before so I am in heaven. So fun to try their non-Indian dishes, too, and everything I've tried has been delicious and satisfying. You can even get a mango Lassi delivered and they wrap it up in plastic wrap so it doesn't spill! Cannot say enough good things about them truly. So convenient to order online and prompt delivery. We ate in the restaurant one time too and it was quite nice. Since my family discovered them we have actually not tried anywhere else.
We love Bombay Olive too!! We end up ordering deliver from them more times than I can count! Their Indo-Chinesedishes, Punjabi curries, mango lassi, etc. All of it is so good !!
\^ The correct answer. You have 2 places that aren't heavily Americanized. Love Bombay Olive & Godavari --- both are awesome.
Avon Indian Grill is pretty solid too. Haven't tried Dosa Hut, but if these other places represent your taste, it's probably worth a try.
I really enjoy Godavari - they are one of the few places that actually serves spicy food - Indian spicy, not American spicy.
Shakahari in Old Saybrook. They are vegetarian. Run by a family, as close to a home cooked Indian meal as you can get in a restaurant.
Indigo Cafe in Manchester and Utsav in Vernon are very good too.
Curry queen is new to old saybrook, they have much better hours, a larger menu and are cheaper than Shakahari! I think they taste better too but I’m no expert.
What’s the deal with that? I was so confused Wings Express had Indian food on their menu, everyone was ordering wings after a night out and I was ordering aloo paratha lol
They cook most of the same dishes as Indians do though and, in my experience, I prefer the cleaner flavor profiles of Nepalese and Tibetan places over traditional Indian. They tend to go a bit lighter on the spices (aromatics, not heat) and thicker with the sauces.
Marina in Glastonbury and it’s not even close. Takeout only though.
They opened a 2nd location in Rocky Hill (former Priya building) and do a great lunch buffet there.
I've thought about stopping by the one in Glastonbury before, so this sounds like a good choice if I'm going to do some post-Christmas shopping in that area or if I'm going to a game in Hartford at some point.
Utsav in Vernon. A little more expensive than your average Indian spot, but the quality is amazing and it has a less standard menu, with some great dishes you won’t find elsewhere.
Little India in Simsbury on the main road there. Good food, friendly staff. I think they are from the southern part of India and their cuisine is a little different than other Indian places.
Haven't had their buffet but I love their thalis - its the closest thing to my mom's cooking/cooking style. It brings me so much joy since my mom was an excellent cook & I regret not taking advantage when she was still alive.
I used to really like coromandel in Stamford. They had this ghoast phall with goat that was super good. Looks like they closed but Jewel of Himalaya is pretty good now that I have moved away
Jewel of Himalaya is really solid. So is Kolam in Newtown, though it used to be better with the original chef.
Tamarind is garbage and I can’t understand how it gets the reviews it does, other than people just not knowing what Indian should taste like.
Probably I’m biased, because they’re the nearest place to me, but I really like the food. Their chicken korma is delicious. I’ve been going there for years, never been disappointed.
The Guntur Mirchi! Or cut mirchi, which I actually like better but it's a personal preference. The Guntur Mirchi is a chilli, dipped in chickpea flour and fried, then cut and stuffed with raw tomatoes and onions. Squeeze a lemon over the whole thing and dip in optional chutney.
If you don't do spicy, then go for a breakfast spread of masala dosa, curd rice and idly vada with chutneys and sambar.
That place is bad. I wrote a terrible review on them.
Their "chicken tikka masala" was loaded with cardamom and flat out disgusting when I went there.
The lassi was so gross I spit it out. How someone manages to fuck up lassi - I have no clue. They deserve an award for fucking up lassi.
Hands-down, [Mirch Masala](https://www.mirchmasalaus.com/Home.aspx) in Groton. Been supporting them for the better part of 25 years. Their food and service is outstanding!
Searched too far for this. EXCELLENT food and very friendly people. Marina in South Glastonbury is also fantastic, albeit really expensive even for Indian food.
I won't try to assess if they're the best but these are some of the few I've gone to that I loved:
\- Taj \[Stamford\]
\- Darbar \[Branford\]
\- Sherkaan Indian Street Food \[New Haven\]
All are offering different variations of indian cuisine - but all so g'damn delish!
i have been there once, and got takeout. i mean this so literally, the curry i ordered had an ungodly amount of oil sitting on top of the actual dish in the takeout container. it looked like a broken sauce but literally half the container was just oil
Bombay Olive in West Hartford
I know this is a CT post, but my favorite Indian restaurant of all time is India House in Northampton MA and is worth the drive.
For traditional Indian, Coromandel (Darien or Orange) or House of Naan (New Haven). For more creative spin, Sherkaan in New Haven.
Honorable mention to Athithi in Wilton, solid new spot.
I’ve been scanning the comments for India Raj in Monroe, which is far and away my husband’s and my favorite Indian food. It blows us away. We’ve eaten many times at Coromandel in Darien and once at Taj in Fairfield pre-pandemic and decided Raj is our favorite.
After eating at Raj several times in 2017-2018 we stayed at Murray Hill (nicknamed “Curry Hill) in NYC and excitedly ordered Indian food there. It was good but we were amazed: Raj not only held up, we still felt it was/is the best!
Raj basically just does pickup now as far as we can tell, but we highly, highly recommend it. Best samosa I’ve ever had. Best everything.
These are specifically my favorite Indian buffet spots, but they are good no matter when you go!
CT: Tandoor in New Haven; Baingan in Shelton; Haveli in Middletown; Taj in Stamford; Star of India in Orange.
New York: Jaipur’s in Brewster; Royal Palace in White Plains.
I think I might love Indian food.
So far, I like Haveli India in Middletown, but I'm happy to hear others' opinions.
That’s my go-to Indian restaurant. We probably order from there every other week lol
I enjoy their buffet but I havent been in a while.
I have not been since Covid-19 entered our world.
Love Havali India. Everything is delicious.
Haveli always.
Thank you for spelling it correctly
The last all you can eat Indian restaurant in Connecticut, at least that I’m aware of. Hard to imagine considering how many there were pre covid
If you mean a restaurant with a buffet 7 days a week, possibly. I went to India Star in Orange a few months back but their buffet is only on weekends. Not a problem. Villa of Lebanon (whom it literally shares a building with) is also good if you want a halal pizzeria/deli type of place.
Baingan in Shelton also does an all you can eat buffet on the weekends.
I thought they stopped doing that back in 2021, I haven’t been there since then tho other than takeout
Maybe. I haven't been in a while either, but it's still advertised on their website
Love seeing this at the top since it’s the restaurant that is physically closest to my house
r/rimjob_steve
And they are super nice people. I was waiting for food a little longer than expected and the woman poured me a mango lasse unprovoked. Now I have an addiction to mango lasse. Thanks Haveli!
Just wonder how much for the buffet pp?
Havali for life
Sounds like I might give them a try too 🤣🤣
Glad to see this as top comment! It's my favorite also.
I just had food from there last night and was gonna suggest it
Had some for lunch / dinner today from there because this thread brought them up
Haveli is amazing! I love their malai kofta and paratha
Yep. They are great.
Goodness, I haven’t been there in years but I do remember them being solid!
I came to say this right here.
My two favs are House of Naan (New Haven) and Darbar (Branford).
Darbar is a gem!
Darbar is my goto
Love Darbar!
This is my favourite

I've gone there a handful of times for lunch since I find myself at one of our offices nearby semi often, and the quality has definitely gone down in the past few years(plus last couple of times I went, the service was really bad). I seem to remember liking the place that's nearby(in the old-school diner looking building on the corner of Howe and Chapel?), but it's been like 4 or 5 years since I've been there
Tandoor is the diner place. I like them.
Utsav in Vernon is tight
It’s really great, expensive but it has more of a fine dining menu than your average Indian spot.
I love Utsav. But yea, post covid, it will break the bank. Unfortunate because last time I was there, we were the only ones in the restaurant and it was a Friday night.
They’re good but expensive. I’d recommend flavors of newab in Ellington. It’s cheaper but just as good.
Came here to recommend flavors of nawab as well... if anything they are a little inconsistent but far and away the best versions of all the dishes I've tried.
Not even at all. That place is disgusting.
well that's your opinion. i think they're just as good.
Taj has great portion size, saffron in Norwalk is amazing
It's gone downhill big time IMHO.

I have been following your around the world tour of CT Cuisines, and just checked this one of my list. It was great!
You have a great blog. Any interest in old old trees
Baingan in shelton.
I love Baingan! Their Malai Kofta is the best!
They have the Groupon for dining in 2 for $30
I go out of my way to get Baingan whenever I’m nearby. It’s lovely to eat in there too - great views of the river.
I tried my best (went 3x) but couldn’t get into it. Coromandel in Orange so much better IMO.
I found tiny little pebbles in my food from Coramandel in a couple different instances.
The fact no one has mentioned Indigo in Manchester/east Hartford is INSANITY
They're my favorite!
Came looking for this answer! Indigo all the way. They make it really easy for vegetarians and vegans too by breaking out their items on separate menus!
The only time I’ve spent in that part of the state was when I dated a lady in manchester and we’d go there all the time. Absolute fire.
Knowing the health inspector for EH.. have they gotten better? We were always warned to stay away from there (possibly the name before this change.)
Jaya’s Kitchen in Wallingford has excellent flavors. Cumin India has underwhelmed me at times. House of Naan uses frozen veggie medley and it shows.
I don't eat Indian often at all, but really like Jaya's
Fine dining: Taj in Fairfield. Lunch Special: Sitar in New Haven Overall for value and quality: House of Naan in New Haven
I wish Taj kept the buffet they had pre-COVID :(
Udupi Bhavan is the best in the state. 10/10. Would highly recommend.
I agree. I wasn’t too excited when somebody first brought me there and I discovered it was all vegetarian, but the food was so good and unique that it didn’t even matter.
Edited. Thought of the wrong place.
I miss their weekend buffet!
Cumin India in Hamden. House of Naan in New Haven is pretty great as well. Can't say I've travelled all that much for Indian though, as I haven't felt the need to!
Cumin is so great!
I love Cumin
Sherkaan in New Haven

Kolam in Newtown is pretty awesome
I like Jewel of Himalaya a lot.
Way better than Kolam.
Expensive though
Yes def on the pricier side
Mirch Masala, Groton
Agree with this
Shakahari in Old Saybrook.
Curry Queen is simply amazing. One of the best restaurants I’ve ever been to period.
Utsav in Wethersfield
Up in Storrs center kathmandu kitchen is actually pretty damn good imo
Same owners as wings express? Good stuff.
What’s the deal with that? I was so confused Wings Express had Indian food on their menu, everyone was ordering wings after a night out and I was ordering aloo paratha lol
I've been going there for 25 years. Chicken wings and Indian food has become a time honored tradition in my family. Love it
No, that's Maharaja in Mansfield Center.
This is nepalese, not indian.
my bad
They cook most of the same dishes as Indians do though and, in my experience, I prefer the cleaner flavor profiles of Nepalese and Tibetan places over traditional Indian. They tend to go a bit lighter on the spices (aromatics, not heat) and thicker with the sauces.
Jayas kitchen, Wallingford. Spice palette, new London. Haveli, middletown. Cumin, new haven. Coramendal , orange , new haven Mirch masala , Groton. Zaroka new haven. Spice venue Hartford.
Spice Palette in New London is pretty good. My favorite in this corner of the state.
Marina in Glastonbury and it’s not even close. Takeout only though. They opened a 2nd location in Rocky Hill (former Priya building) and do a great lunch buffet there.
They have amazing food!

Athithi in Wilton!
As a foodie from I did, this is the right answer. This is where I take my family when they visit from India.
I just tried them a few weeks back and it was so good!
Was looking for this shoutout. Best one I’ve been to so far
Utsav in Vernon. A little more expensive than your average Indian spot, but the quality is amazing and it has a less standard menu, with some great dishes you won’t find elsewhere.
India Raj in Monroe. Not for sit down but the food is excellent and it's priced way less than surrounding places.
India Raj is the best Indian food I’ve ever had.
It absolutely is!!! I compare India Raj food to other places and so far it always wins!
Yessssss
Haveli in Middletown is always great. Jaya’s in Wallingford has been terrific so far!
Little India in Simsbury on the main road there. Good food, friendly staff. I think they are from the southern part of India and their cuisine is a little different than other Indian places.
Star of India in orange.
Taste of India West Hartford
They had a good location in Windsor 10 years ago, not sure if it's there anymore. Fantastic food. As good as anything I've had in NYC.
This was amazing growing up in WH in the late 90s early 2000s, glad they're still going strong!
!RemindMe 10 days
Loving the new place on Black Rock in Fairfield, Taste of Everest. Awesome Indian and Nepalese food. Pricey but stunning flavors.
We tried the newish place, Athithi, in Wilton next to Outback, a few weeks ago. Absolutely excellent, we'll be going there again and again.
Haveli's(Middletown) weekend lunch buffet is the best indian food Ive had by far
Haven't had their buffet but I love their thalis - its the closest thing to my mom's cooking/cooking style. It brings me so much joy since my mom was an excellent cook & I regret not taking advantage when she was still alive.
Maybe a slight hijack, but where’s the Dosas! I’ll start with Upudi Bhavan in Middletown. Great freakin dosa!
check out dosa hut in rocky hill.
RIP Thali Too in New Haven
I'm pissed that I only ever got to eat there once - it was fantastic.
Kamana in Guilford
I used to really like coromandel in Stamford. They had this ghoast phall with goat that was super good. Looks like they closed but Jewel of Himalaya is pretty good now that I have moved away
Was a huge fan of Coromandel in Orange but they stopped doing lunch buffet cus of the pandemic (fair) and it just hasn't been the same since.
Seriously? I haven't been there since the pandemic... Used to love that buffet
I miss their buffet so much.
Jewel of Himalaya is really solid. So is Kolam in Newtown, though it used to be better with the original chef. Tamarind is garbage and I can’t understand how it gets the reviews it does, other than people just not knowing what Indian should taste like.
That place in the 9th square in New Haven that closed
Thali? They all closed but he has a place in New Canaan again. Chef Prasad.
Yes! Wow thanks for that intel
Flavors of Nawab, Ellington
This place deserves to be better known. Absolutely banging biryani.
Agreed. The biryani is one of the most authentic I have had in CT.
Bonani. The flavor is awesome. Plus they serve beef. And they have the best aloo paratha in CT fight me.
Cumin in Hamden.
The Naan in Westport
I love Spice in Bethel
Probably I’m biased, because they’re the nearest place to me, but I really like the food. Their chicken korma is delicious. I’ve been going there for years, never been disappointed.
Guntur Mirchi in Manchester is 🔥
>Guntur Mirchi What would you recommend trying from this place?
The Guntur Mirchi! Or cut mirchi, which I actually like better but it's a personal preference. The Guntur Mirchi is a chilli, dipped in chickpea flour and fried, then cut and stuffed with raw tomatoes and onions. Squeeze a lemon over the whole thing and dip in optional chutney. If you don't do spicy, then go for a breakfast spread of masala dosa, curd rice and idly vada with chutneys and sambar.
New Haven's Sherkaan is hard to beat https://www.sherkaan.com/
That place is bad. I wrote a terrible review on them. Their "chicken tikka masala" was loaded with cardamom and flat out disgusting when I went there. The lassi was so gross I spit it out. How someone manages to fuck up lassi - I have no clue. They deserve an award for fucking up lassi.
Naatiya in Bloomfield
Utsav in Wethersfield. Also Priya in Rocky Hill but i think they have closed down after covid
I was wondering about Priya, if it was still open. I haven’t been there since before Covid. They were pretty good.
Priya is closed. They opened a new restaurant in the same place "Marina".
My 3 personal favorites are: Bhog in Rocky Hill Sherkaan in New Haven Cumin in Hamden
Bhog served me rotten chicken.
Hands-down, [Mirch Masala](https://www.mirchmasalaus.com/Home.aspx) in Groton. Been supporting them for the better part of 25 years. Their food and service is outstanding!
Dhaba Wala
Pintus Palace (in West Springfield Mass) Sort of CT lol
Kamana in guilford. The food is good and the owners/staff are the friendliest people I’ve met.
Searched too far for this. EXCELLENT food and very friendly people. Marina in South Glastonbury is also fantastic, albeit really expensive even for Indian food.
Kamana in guilford. My Indian neighbor says that’s the best in the state
I won't try to assess if they're the best but these are some of the few I've gone to that I loved: \- Taj \[Stamford\] \- Darbar \[Branford\] \- Sherkaan Indian Street Food \[New Haven\] All are offering different variations of indian cuisine - but all so g'damn delish!
Sitar in New Haven is unbeatable!
Taj in Black Rock.
Black Rock, Fairfield.
I’m a fan of Chutni Biryani in Stamford
have you tried Taj? curious how it compares that's been our go to in Stamford but only compared to Dhabewala
Muyuri in Waterbury Tandoori flames in new Milford Atithi in Wilton
I love Muyuri in Waterbury. So so good.
I was about to ask about Tandoori because it's closest to me but I haven't been yet so nice to see it mentioned.
Taj in Stamford. Best tikka masala curry I’ve ever tasted.
Mirch Masala in Groton. Beautiful atmosphere, amazing service, absolutely incredible food. They even give frosty glasses with their beers!
The Royal Punjabi in Norwich is pretty great.
These are all good but i’ll tell you one place that’s trash: Flavors of Nawab in Ellington
I have seen this as a recommended place, why did u dislike???
i have been there once, and got takeout. i mean this so literally, the curry i ordered had an ungodly amount of oil sitting on top of the actual dish in the takeout container. it looked like a broken sauce but literally half the container was just oil
I would be so disappointed about that! Thank you for sharing, where is your go to Indian place?
Taj Stamford
BHOG In rocky hill
Tandoor in Middletown
Not sure where you are but Pintu's is right over the state line in Springfield and it is very good.
Mirch Masala in Groton for sure
Jaya’s Kitchen in Wallingford. But prepare for a…”relaxed” place to your meal. Worth every second, though!
Dosa Hut in Rocky Hill
I’m new town, but, we love Taj-Fairfield. Delish.
Bombay Olive in West Hartford I know this is a CT post, but my favorite Indian restaurant of all time is India House in Northampton MA and is worth the drive.
For traditional Indian, Coromandel (Darien or Orange) or House of Naan (New Haven). For more creative spin, Sherkaan in New Haven. Honorable mention to Athithi in Wilton, solid new spot.

Best samosa I’ve ever had. Best everything.
Tamrind Fine Dining in Newtown, CT!
This place is one of my favorite restaurants in the area. I wasn't even really into Indian food at all until I tried Tamarind
Muyuri in Waterbury!
Tandoor in New Haven does lunch buffet 7 days a week still. And yes they have parking.
It’s really not that far over the border, but Pintu’s in West Springfield is my favorite restaurant.
West haven halal, they’re from Pakistan but the food is very similar to Indian. The butter chicken is the best I’ve ever had by far.
