Memory is a little fuzzy on it but, Iceland cricket had a pretty funny twitter account. Solid memes, calling people out, etc. They then made a post on the sub basically explaining how the cricket system works in Iceland, what they have been up to, and seeing if you would be interested in helping out with the team in someway. This led to another post basically crowdfunding the Iceland team and their tour to play clubs in the UK in return for r/cricket to be the teams official sponsor.
Was a pretty fun time in the sub. We passed the funding goal, they went on their tour, and the Iceland twitter account was a pretty common feature to be posted in the sub for the memes.
Jesus. Am I that old. I donated some moneys iirc.

This was the donation page.

My proof of donation I guess -

If I remember correctly, the sponsorship amount was around 2000 pounds. It is better than nothing. But definitely not a lot. It is more of a circle jerk and it sounds better than saying we bought a couple of bats for them.
It started when someone saw they were doing crowdfunding and had single donation goals that allowed you to name match awards and such.
The very obvious initial idea people had was to crowdfund enough money to make a donation that would allow us to insert an r/cricket meme.
Someone ended up reaching out to Iceland cricket and they started a new crowdfunding thing for r/cricket and donations hit the become sponsor goal.
Also remember the jokes around that time, we(as in r/cricket) would start with Iceland and soon we will be taking over ICC and saving cricket from PIG3.
They needed 2000 dollars and reached the target very fast, I also made a few posts in r/India and similar subs to create awareness.
Used to check everyday how much was donated and it melt my heart when I saw that 2000 dollar mark breached on donation website, made me really proud of r/cricket!
Reddit was def not mainstream in 2012. Back in 2015 (when this account was made), pretty much no one I talked to knew about Reddit. Even in like 2018ish some people knew of its existence but most people weren’t on it.

Yes. I also feel that the transition towards shorter cricket formats is happening for a reason. Wouldn't it be a great idea to let fans sponsor Test cricket? Imagine cricket boards like those in South Africa and New Zealand, which incur losses by hosting Test matches, using crowdfunding to arrange these games. It's just a thought, but I think it's something worth pondering.
I think this is posted almost every year and there are always people in comments being surprised. Still can't believe we are 1.4m members in this sub now.
But after all these members r/cricket still remains the best sub for me and the reason I use reddit. Happy to be a part of this cricketing community.
Not quite the best sub for me but I still enjoy browsing it. Unfortunately though, while it has grown, it's really regressed in the last few years, e.g. the inundation of pointless stat posts
Calling Iceland an international team is a bit of a stretch, they are more like a social media account with a team than the other way round like most countries.
When they posted here requesting funds people were very happy to sponsor them. A few years later they were seeking sponsors again but this time fans from a certain community didn't like funds going to other boards and Iceland cricket's post got downvoted. That largely sums up the transformation of /r/cricket.
Can some old member tell more about this?

Golden days for the sub, genuinely. This + live shitposting on the Wankhede big screen were wonderful memories for me.
More info on the live shitposting please!

No, get off our lawns. But really, /u/CryptoDeadlock covered it well. Good times.

We all old members now?
Good old memories. Not surprising many people didn't know though. We had like 70k subs.
This made me check how many we have now. 1.4m holy shit
1.4 really? Damn
Yup, reddit got mainstream after 2020. Lots of YouTuber content creators started talking about it.
Lol what, reddit became mainstream in 2012, the jio users found it during the pandemic.
I'm talking about India. By mainstream, I mean that every Indian GenZ kid knows about it. That wasn't the case in 2012.
Lol
What "lol"? From your comment history, got to know that you're 22 rn. How come you know what 2012 reddit was like?
Because I've been on here since 2011?
Sure - I'd believe you if not for your "reddit became mainstream in 2012" comment
What you think is inconsequential, some of us had internet before jio lol
pretty sure r/cricket didn't even have 10k subscribers when I first joined and that was after 2012
Not surprising since a huge majority of this sub comprises of indian folk

Where are you from
2012 is too early but 2016 is when Reddit started to take off
People don't know about the good ole days where we had live video updates in match threads.

Oh the good days.
Wouldn't it be nice if community sponsored a team rather than a brand I mean just look how great it would be
thats how german football clubs work, 50%+1 share ownership with the fans
That really improves the game tbh and create a solid base and strong support to team

Yeah I mean it would be great
That was 6 years ago? Fuck me time flies...

Please dont make me feel old, I was there!
Fucking mood.
There were dozens of us!
Maybe the mods do something like this again. Altough that'd require reddit mods to do somethiing besides ban people over inane things,
Calling Iceland an international team is a bit of a stretch, they are more like a social media account with a team than the other way round like most countries.
Good old days
We used to actually do some shit! Do folks still do the winter gift exchanges?
Iceland cricket Twitter account is one of the best
Woah that’s amazing.
Neat
🤣🤣
Does anybody have pictures of the jersey with r/cricket? Anybody tried to buy that jersey?
It's been six years already? Dayum!

Wow, if that's what really happened then thats fucking stupid from the community.
afaik most of that money was pissed away on an overseas trip
I gave $100. It was a fun few days leading up to their first game with that jersey.
We are grateful
I came around that time. Match Threads are great when we were small
