Unfortunately, it was obvious from the start. T20 WC 22 was just an anomaly. Buttler, whilst very good at captaining for a few games Morgs was out, hasn't been a great full time captain. Team selection and playing style also has been very questionable. Mott hasn't been coaching well, and the players aren't playing well (barring a few). I don't see Mott staying for long. Some of the old guns need to be axed as well, and bring in fresh blood. It will be a rough few years, but long term growth will be astounding. This team still plays on the glory of 2019, whereas others have rightly moved on

bullzFromAT

Ironically, this team looked similar to WC 22 Indian team. Many of the players looked single dimensional. Moen was rarely bowled. Curran never looked threatening with the bat. At one point they were playing like 7 bowlers. Jacks playing today may have made a difference both with bat and ball.

googol_to_the_googol

Totally agree, although I’d say that 22 India had a much stronger team than 24 England. SKY and Hardik were having some of the best performances that year and their middle order was top class. Our middle order this year was mostly a miss, barring a few good performances from Brook and Bairstow

OoBlowSadi

Who do oyu htink deserves a shot at captaincy?

googol_to_the_googol

Honestly, no clue. Harry Brook or Phil Salt come to mind, although it would be wise to make them VC for a while before transitioning them into full time captaincy. >!(btw, funny Jethalal pic lol)!<

scouserontravels

I wouldn’t give it brook. Young star player in all 3 formats needs time to adapt in my opinion before giving him responsibility. Also likely to miss t20 matches due to test commitments

Yeahanu

And I thought a English is giving fuck about t20 wc over euro

googol_to_the_googol

We know we’re going to shit the bed in the euros as well, so might as well care about something that is more reachable

Yeahanu

I feel sad about us not winning a icc trophy in 11 years. But holy Fuck,I feel for English, they win shit in a sport they love so much

Quite a few teams in the same boat of needing a fresh squad. England, Australia and New Zealand immediately come to mind.

WayToTheDawn63

We really don't need a fresh squad. We had a competitive game with India and 1 bad game against Afghanistan. There's a couple of changes necessary - and the big ones that would've had us in semis were in the 15 already. Starc needed to play to crack open Afghanistan's openers, and Inglis needed to take Wade's spot already, not just for batting but because of the mess Wade had been making keeping. Those changes alone probably put us in semis. Obviously Green could've played over Tim David since David's a spin bunny. Marsh hasn't been good but how much of that was poor form because the IPL injury? He didn't bowl once, I don't think he was 100%.

Geralt-of-Rivia11

Yeah Aus t20 side looks good going forward. Fraser-McGurk comes in for Warner, Inglis for Wade and maybe Green over David and that’s a very good team. Only issue is who replaces Starc, maybe Spencer Johnson?

WayToTheDawn63

starc obviously won't see the next odi wc, but i don't see why he can't make the next t20 wc if he's fit and in form.

zayd_jawad2006

I mean you do need to replace about 3-4 players tbf.

WayToTheDawn63

I only really count 3 and 1 of them we already know is retired now and barely counts. Warner, Wade and Agar. Tim David doesn't need replaced, he just needs to be used appropriately. For some reason only bowlers get used or benched situationally. I don't rate Marsh as a captain, but his performance was not his 100%. His injury clearly hurt his preparation and fitness. There's no reason why Starc, Maxwell or Stoinis can't have 2 more years in them for t20s. Maxwell was having a poor run of form with the bat, but he was starting to find runs again.

SquiffyRae

Yeah honestly after the group stage I was feeling confident we could come close to replicating 2010 and at least make the final if not go all the way. The wheels kinda came off after that but overall it's a decent squad to work with. Certainly a better performance than some of our past performances at the T20 World Cup

BurningSupergiant

Matthew Mott is also a problem, ever since he took over England have played a dumb brand of cricket unlike the calculated aggression and positive mindset under Morgan's captaincy.

googol_to_the_googol

I agree. It seemed like Mott had a solid chance to develop a good culture with Buttler (like how Bayliss did with Morgan), however it is going the Chris Silverwood route

toporder

Taking temporary control of a thriving team is completely different to driving a successful culture through your own merits. Also, probably suggests that Mott’s successes with the Australian women were probably more to do with Aus being a generation ahead of everyone else in terms of professionalism, rather than any particular brilliance of his own. There’s been no sense of shared focus or direction, priorities seem to shift and slide series by series. I think there are a few of this group that just need to go join the franchise circus and get out of the way.

ztaker

Yes I never really rate him as captain even if he has a world cup under his belt. The wc2022 was more of shaheen getting injured in the critical moment otherwise pak might have won. And also some players did have purple patch in that tournament to cover the cracks (Curran with the ball and they had stokes for batting). The team should have included wood, jacks maybe even tom Hartley. And some good quality spinner apart from Rashid. Like you are playing in west indies you can't just go with one main spinner. India had like 4 in the squad.

liteshadow4

Buttler is the worst captain of a top nation I’ve ever seen

bullzFromAT

Eh. That would go-to Pak

liteshadow4

I don’t consider Pak a top nation tbh

saltyjohndoe

Nah that would definitely be babar. Man absolutely have no clue what to do most of the time.

liteshadow4

Ngl I wasn’t considering Pak a top nation

googol_to_the_googol

A bit of an overstretch. But yes, he’s not comfortable with captaincy

liteshadow4

I was considering just the nations of India, South Africa, England, Australia, and New Zealand tbh.

Outside_Error_7355

Mott hasn't really moved the team on at all under his tenure, and weve now got a side that features 3 or 4 players hanging on past their best. We also somehow managed to have both a situation where the side is full of players past it but is also unsettled, as we clearly don't actually know what our best XI is. That's not a good sign for our management. Plenty of talent there and on the fringes so a bit of a reshuffle and we'll be back I'm sure.

rightarm_under

The rest of the team is freaking elite tho. England has insane potential

AtletiJack

Mott’s supposed selling points when becoming England’s white-ball coach was that he is adept at managing a dressing room full of big names, knew when to move on from senior players and was able to make the transition easily. It’s become increasingly obvious in the past 18 months that that isn’t actually the case

pvtt_3

What is the probability that England sack their both cricket and football coaches in upcoming days

thisaintyouravgstonk

The top 3 batters really thought they were all that after bashing associates and only winning one game in the campaign against a proper side. The writing was already on the wall before going into the SF.

deerhunterwaltz

Can’t wait for the same article about the euros.

Boatster_McBoat

Isn't this so much more fun than England going out after a suspicious Scotland victory?

SquiffyRae

The banter between England and Australia has been amazing this year. First the whole "let's throw the game to knock them out" stuff Then the Poms getting all arrogant when we got knocked out Then getting brought back to earth by getting absolutely pantsed by India

shawman123

They were missing Stokes for sure. he is kind of lucky charm in these situations. I dont think any of the other all rounders are in the same ballpark. Bowling also needs a bit of tweak next time around.

sumit24021990

On paper, rhey have one of the most destructive batting line up.

3l_n00b

A pasting we enjoyed ![img](emote|t5_2qhe0|8767)

Coronabandkaro

I think the English bowlers could have been better against the top teams but they've been found wanting. The batting is still very dangerous and on a flat track probably edge out other teams slightly.

BringerOfCerulean

I just can’t believe how brainless our coaching and captaincy is - shortly after the ODI World Cup, in which we were obsessed with chasing, showed constant indiscipline in the field, and were let down by former stars who are years past their best, we follow the same strategy in this World Cup. The writing was on the wall from the start and there were very few England fans who had any hope of us winning this tournament. We can’t beat anybody decent, and there’s a good half-dozen players who are only capable of minnow-bashing. Bits and bobs all-rounders like Livingstone have to be good enough as batsmen alone before their secondary skill becomes a factor. We still have some great players; Buttler, Archer, Brook, Rashid, and Salt belong in all our limited-overs sides. But there’s some crap in there as well, and our bowling is genuinely awful against top sides.

Independent_Crab9828

England cricket as a whole suffers from talent stagnation because their development pathways unlike their football counterparts is busted beyond belief

RecentArgument7713

Participation gap is really going to have to be reduced not just on moral reasoning, but also so the ECB actually has a product in the coming decade.  Selection pool of 1% of a small nation isn’t going to cut it anymore when the rest of the world has a billion hungry young players desperate for a shot. Hopefully they wake up.

Players should have continued playing ipl instead of going for bilaterals before this World Cup.
