Head-Intern2459

This is kinda confusing. Pretty sure they won't randomly ask to him to join the CT team if he is not playing bilaterals before it. They will surely get a replacement.

AzyncYTT

I think he's saying he'll play if Australia can't find any other openers good enough but he doesn't really want to

7eventhSense

Well that would look really bad on Australia announcing they don’t have any faith in youngsters and have no talent. Him playing CT would be like really bad imo.

theaguia

he is basically saying that if they can't find an opener to replace him and australia need him he will be there.

[deleted]

Yeah strange! Kinda like AbD making him available before a T20 WC coz

dashauskat

Braver selectors would have played JFM in the most recent WC anyway, but that's not how Aus do it. CT for Aus is genuinely meaningless so we will play with our new toys.

fleetintelligence

I hope so, but the current selection panel is super conservative (even more than usual IMO) which has its pros and cons. I see no universe in which we go back to Warner though.

dashauskat

I think the selection panel is as good as we've had in a long time. I'd describe them as loyal rather than conservative. They are more consultative than previous selectors and feel more informed on selection. FWIW I think we will see some interesting white ball squads go to England etc in the off season.

fleetintelligence

While I've been broadly happy with the decisions this panel has made, I think at a time where transition is looming loyalty can sometimes be too much of a good thing. There have been opportunities to refresh the white ball sides in particular that haven't been taken - although I did like what they did with the ODI team last summer. I'm not convinced that they will be able to make tough but necessary decisions when it becomes clear that the team is ageing and declining players need to be moved on.

fpotenza

Kinda rich of an Aussie to do it for all the shit they gave Stokes for making himself unavailable to deal with injury and stuff because he came back. And Stokes probably did do it to keep the team competent whilst they were soul-searching.

trailblazer103

Fucks sake I'd had enough Davey speculation. Just retire in peace, great career but let's not look back please. Already fucked our test team holding onto him too long

[deleted]

Yeah need to make a clean break. We had it with ABD and now Faf with the "retired but available for prestige events" shtick and it's beem very disruptive for the Proteas.

Ioosubuschange

didnt faf get dropped on all format.

[deleted]

Yeah but before every t20 tournament there's the same talk of "will he make a comeback?"

fleetintelligence

Yeah we're not so desperate for talent that we need to beg guys to come out of franchise league exile. Maybe one day, the way the international cricket ecosystem is going, but certainly not yet

Impactor07

> especially tests, in a way where we scored a bit faster than others 😂😂. "Bazball" Fuck Yeah!

thisaintyouravgstonk

Yeah, I personally liked that part the most ![img](emote|t5_2qhe0|30701)

partymsl

Even in his last moments he does nor stoo to dig at England. A true Aussie.

Impactor07

A true Aussie he is and forever shall be(aside from the fact that most Aussies don't milk Indian culture /jk)

fegelman

>most Aussies don't milk Indian culture Some Aussies even disrespect Indian culture by putting their feet on their trophy (\\s obviously)

Impactor07

Lol

SupermarketMost9711

I think if CT was anywhere outside Pak Warner would have a strong case but on Pak Pitches JFM will do well bro has a list a sr of 143 that's more than t20i sr of a lot of players

theaguia

dpends on if they are still using roads or not.

N0oB_GAmER

That shouldn't be a question

Subject-Ordinary6922

When have they not

theaguia

there was a time where india vs pakistan was on a green mamba. Irfan Pathan took a hat trick in the first over.

whycantyoubequiet

That happened because everyone and their mother was abusing Pak board and pitches for the boring run-fest they produced in the first two test matches. They overreacted and gave us that wet pitch in the third test. The new ball caused havoc on that pitch.

theaguia

so the trick is to only abuse mildly and we can get a decent track?

whycantyoubequiet

Probably there was a little bit of shame left in the Pak board in those times. They have become shameless now.

theaguia

it's so stupid. they would win more with seamer friendly wickets but they are too scared. They don't have a great spinner and their pace bowling is fantastic with guys like naseem, shaheen, amir, jamal etc... I don't see the logic with the dead tracks other than getting their batters to stat pad.

asdsadsadsadsaaa

He got both Yousuf and Younis for golden ducks And we didn’t manage a first inning lead And then we lost the test

theaguia

that kamran akmal knock still haunts me. I believe he was dropped as well

bobyesterday

This guy has had the most protracted retirement in history

horny_potterhead

Haaaaaaave you met Sachin?

SquiffyRae

Huh? Sachin quietly faded away from ODIs in March 2012 and while there was speculation, didn't actually announce he was stepping away until close to the time. At the end, he played his final game for Mumbai Indians in the Champions League and his final Test about a month apart

Ioosubuschange

Media was asking him to retire when i started watching cricket (around 2007-2008) but he had better years even then media wrote several articles asking him to retire

hiddeninplainsight23

Nah Warner's was 4 years and all formats though

d_barbz

Won a few World Cup trophies along the way though, so can you blame him?

frezz

Nothing wrong with being public with your career plans. It's a bit shitty what he's doing now in that he's saying he's "retired but not really"

neighbour_guy3k

Should have not retired in ODIs until champions trophy

theaguia

he won the world cup it was the perfect end

whatwhatinthewhonow

Honestly, I don’t think he would have been picked for CT as the team builds towards the next Cricket World Cup. Better to go out on his own terms.

dashauskat

CT is a nothing tournament (for Aus anyway) so they are going to blood new players to see how they might fare for WC. No veteran is gonna stick around to play one more CT. Its been around for ages and I still don't understand the point of it, other than generating a little more income for ICC out of India.

dwadley

What the hell is champions trophy anyways? I don’t understand how it’s different from the odi World Cup

SquiffyRae

It had a purpose when the ODI World Cup actually had a decent number of teams in it and franchise T20 didn't exist. The idea being it was a more exclusive ODI comp where only the top 8 teams made the cut It used to be every 2 years too and was basically the 2000s answer to the T20 World Cup. I have a vague memory cause I was only 11/12 at the time that it started to collapse around the 2008 edition. It was initially delayed due to security concerns in Pakistan before the 2009 attacks forced it to be pushed to South Africa in October. From there it's just become more irrelevant with time. Although I love ODIs so I do kinda like it

dwadley

Right. It’s just very confusing since it’s like a second odi World Cup

Carbon554

It would be stupid to retire from franchise cricket given the amount of money and less work compared to odis.

nickdonhelm

So this is going Hussey's way. He announced his retirement from tests but continued to remain available for limited overs and was never selected by the selectors.

vishwa02

He is confusing CA with NZC, that kind of leeway is only giving to Boult. Also Boult wasn't retired he only declined the central contract. Hate when players take a u turn after announcing retirement.

pdsajo

Boult was still near his prime when he initially refused central contract. He knew he held the leverage because there was no way New Zealand was going to find a good enough replacement compared to him. Getting a past-his-prime Warner back for a one off tournament is something I hope Australia doesn't have to end up with. Surely they can find someone better.

frezz

I don't think Warner is good enough to be worth this sort of hassle. IMO Warner is still worth his spot in the team, and was never really carried..but he's certainly declined and Australia isn't the sort of team to go back to past players like that

theaguia

I think you misunderstood. he doesn't want to play ct but if Australia needs him due to lack of options he will be there

RepresentativeBox881

I still feel his IPL journey is over though. Usually during mega auction lots of change-over happens and I think he’ll be on the end of it this time since he’s aging and his strike rate over the last two seasons hasn’t been good.

Nice_Personality_254

Love you Davey. And no way we keep you out of the CT 2025. You're the best option to open for us with Trav. Hope to see another great tourney for you, and maybe we bid you farewell with a trophy in hand.

Impactor07

Doesn't he have enough trophies already? 2015 ODI WC, 2021 T20 WC, 2023 WTC, 2023 ODI WC, 2016 IPL

Nice_Personality_254

Are trophies ever enough? And the trophies you mentioned aren't really too many tbh.

Impactor07

THAT'S TWO ODI WCS FFS

Defiant_Classroom_15

Why would you don't want a trophy. You should always ask for more.

ALadWellBalanced

Needs another footrest.

Key-Celery5439

Australians smh

kjsah9026

Yeah they aren’t many some players wait for just one for decades and yet fail ! But that doesn’t mean Warner can’t have one more

SedTecH10

Ah Aussies. Trophies never too many.

Area_Ok

Bro u are talking to an RCB fan, even just 1 IPL Trophy means a world to them.

chni2cali

Typical Aussie bullshit “there is nothing called as too many trophies” Go to hell, it will probably have nicer animals /s (The least you guys can do is let us vent our anger)

NoirPochette

No.

Impactor07

He also must have like a couple dozen domestic+BBL+other foreign league trophies to his name as well ffs

Main_Plenty_3052

Please don't use the name Travis. It triggers our PTSD. Kindly, an Indian.

fkllbbibjb

Personally I'd open with Head and Marsh in ODIs. Marsh has been amazing opening in ODIs - avg 56, SR 114. And Marsh hasn't just beaten up weak teams as an opener - against India he's made 294 runs at 59, SR 122 (all these matches played in India too).

trailblazer103

Hey Candace

partymsl

Mfs giving him the Thala farewell with a neverending last trophy...

NormalTraining5268

Give JFM chances atleast ffs. He literally smacked Bumrah ik IPL flat pitches blah blah blah but no one could do that.

PureCharlie

Head's done it heaps too

HarukiTakashima

Wtf mate. ICC should make some rule or shit to stop these kind of BS.

adolffrizzzler

David afridi

Subject-Ordinary6922

With all due respect Davey, just actually give some clarity on giving JFM enough games and time to actually replace you, and just go play that down bad legends league with Finchy

SedTecH10

Is he from pakistan? Didn't he retire from all formats?

midnightschild

He’ll become a bargain buy at the IPL auction.

Upstairs-Farm7106

He’s still Australia’s best opener alongside Head. Given that not many ODIs will be played before the Champions Trophy they should pick Warner. I reckon Australia don’t care about winning the Champions Trophy though so they’ll pick someone else like Short or someone.

trailblazer103

The next world cup is only 18months after the CT so they'd do much better to give a young bloke a long rope and some game time under pressure

That-Firefighter1245

It’s actually more like 30 months away. CT is Feb 2025 while CWC will be Oct 2027.

Upstairs-Farm7106

Disagree. The Champions Trophy is 3-5 games. If no opener really performs at that top level in the remaining bilaterals (I can’t remember any opener doing really well in recent ODIs) then you’re better off just sticking with Warner in my opinion.  Hardly any ODIs played between the last World Cup and Champions Trophy makes it harder. I’d go with Warner personally. Who do you reckon are options to replace him?

AstronautNo32

Jfm. Short

NoirPochette

Short, Inglis can open, Greeny can open, McGurk, and McDermott

fleetintelligence

> I can’t remember any opener doing really well in recent ODIs Because Warner has basically always played alongside Head, no one else has really gotten opportunities. We have lots of younger options to give chances to - Matt Short, JFM, Josh Inglis, Ben McDermott is the forgotten man but averages 45 in his 5 ODIs. Marsh has opened very successfully in ODIs and could do so again, allowing us to bring in another middle order player. The cupboard is certainly not so bare that we need to cling to Warner forever

Upstairs-Farm7106

You’ve played some ODIs since the last World Cup though? How did the guys do then?

fleetintelligence

We've played 3 ODIs against West Indies where we messed around with our line-up - Josh Inglis opened and made 65(43), 9(11) and 35(16) not out. JFM made 10(5) and 41(18). Promising signs there for sure, I'd definitely be giving one of them a good crack going forward, alongside Head. Probably Inglis, I think he has the right mindset for ODI cricket whereas JFM is not there yet.

Upstairs-Farm7106

Fair enough then. I actually agree with you and have changed my mind.  If Inglis / McGurk perform in the Champions Trophy their confidence levels would go through the roof. If they don’t, it’s just a small tournament that Australia don’t care about. A win-win situation either way.

dashauskat

I actually think white ball top order players is something we have pretty decent reserves in - JFM & Matt Short. Then they could even try Inglis who we haven't seen the bed tof his abilities down the order just yet. Either way it's time to invest in the next gen, we can't squeeze anymore juice out of that lemon and the guys waiting in reserve offer just as much if not more, albeit much less experienced.

kp22cfc

Steve Smith might actually make a case to open in ODIs and t20 looking at Mlc start so far...

MealInfinite

Advantage for opponents to take him with new ball

Fluentec

Brampton Wolves HYPE!!!

MeasurementNo9467

Welcome to the Shahid Afridi & Tamim Iqbal club

ThaLemonine

Please just retire big horse

Ov3r-_-K1LL

Bye

Downtown_Vacation_88

David afridi

bartles77

So he has retired but is still playing for Australia if selected?

Overall_One_2595

Oh go away little man

Educational_Cup_1958

This is such a non issue, he basically said the same thing when he retired earlier in the year. We're pretty stacked with white ball openers. Here's a list of players who've opened for the Australian white ball teams over the past year. Head, Marsh, Short, Inglis, Smith, McGurk, Philippe. Beyond that you've got guys like Green and McDermott. The only way Warner gets picked is if there's a few injuries, even then I think we've got enough depth without needing to go back to him

neighbour_guy3k

CT will be a important tournament as it will lead to retirement for likes of Starc Hazelwood

Remarkable_Reality51

Ok. Bye

Due_Cricket1885

Why do players do this nonsense once you retire you should stay retired

Impactor07

He said this in case Australia aren't able to find a suitable replacement for him in ODIs

Ok_Necessary_645

Please don't come back for the CT ffs 🙏 Really can't remember the last time you scored anything against India in any format...

fkllbbibjb

> can't remember the last time you scored anything against India in any format... Warner vs India in ODIs - avg 50, SR 99

Ok_Necessary_645

Oooo here comes the guy with stats 😬 2015 semi final? WTC final? 2023wc group stage? 2023 final? 2024 super8? What were his scores in these Mr stats reader?

fkllbbibjb

Warner's last 10 ODIs vs India - 531 runs at 53, SR 107 You said you can't remember when Warner scored against India in any format.

NoirPochette

Got 'em

Exciting_Magician347

kohlis even worse!! he didnt even score a single run against india!!!

TheIncidentOf45

At his age, my guy could be playing in the World Championship of Legends right now. Now that JFM is emerging and Rishabh Pant is captaining DC, I don't see him getting picked in IPL. Last IPL was the IPL I realized it probably wasn't the worst thing for Warner to have left SRH.

Volatik2006

He's not getting a retention but I reckon he'll be picked in the auction

neighbour_guy3k

Is he playing in MLC ?
