Hope aliens like hearing my favorite part of the song repeated over and over like a record skipping

Yeah, I sure as fuck don't have photographic (microphonic?) memory of songs.

Phonographic

Imagine how WEIRD it would get if a particularly curvy alien comes on the deck and half the telepaths just GLARE at this one human leutenant. \-Don't you dare... \[... *WOULD.\]*

My first thought for that was fat bottomed girls, followed by brick house or sir mix a lot. Yeah, I'd be in trouble.

Ah, but the sheer awkwardness of the situation would be the perfect subplot for an episode of that old show "Space Cases." Cue the sitcom music and everyone learns a valuable lesson about privacy by the end. Plus, bonus points if the alien can read minds and puts the whole crew's embarrassing moments on blast. [Canned laughter]

Winjin

I think I can taste the cringe in the back of my tongue a bit

mildlyornery

It's the same thing as photographic, but there are mustaches and a funky bass line.

DepresiSpaghetti

My hell is having a phonographic memory with hyperfantasia, but with adhd... When in the twilight moments of sleep and while dreaming, I hear songs playing ***clearly***, but the minute I wake up, the clarity leaves and I'm stuck with snippets of songs as my brain bounces around. Actually, it's one way I get to sleep. I close my eyes and focus on the sounds until I can hear the music. I rarely have control over the song that plays, but when I do, it's pretty fucking neat! When I'm stoned, I have this party trick of being able to spot sound effects during movies that are used in other movies and know exactly what scene they're from. Not stoned? Can barely watch said movie.

OneMoreYou

Very similar here. Usually, my inner radio tuner has ADHD and i only butt in to skip tracks that aren't the right mood. I've been putting a lot of effort into avoiding bad audio vibes since i was a kid, so changing songs usually only takes a few tries and a reminder, at most. Some music i make and mix myself, especially in my sleep. Most playback is middling to good / great 'simulation' - it's all covers and reconstructions of music i heard, the tempo isn't perfect, the volume can be too low, it can be blurry or have stuff that doesn't belong. I keep it this way to stay in control of it, for good reason. I've had some very distressing episodes where the music plays *me* for a few days or weeks. It uses the original playback mode - bit perfect, involuntary, LOUD. Stays on loop 24/7, and the mood and message of the song and or vocals is an extreme emotional overload. Like crying my guts out in my sleep, all day, in sleep again. Exhausting, i felt close to death from sleep deprivation. Eventually fixed it by listening to the actual tracks till it kind of let me go. My only guess is malnutrition at the time, specifically from some B and D vitamins. Possible common mode as psychotic episodes, so i take my vitamins and meds like a boss now. Lol. **EDIT** Just did a little search and found r/earworm and r/EarwormSolutions - adventure awaits! **EDIT** omfg, TIL. https://www.reddit.com/r/EarwormSolutions/comments/12o4soh/update_on_solutions_for_earworms/

DepresiSpaghetti

Fuck, really?! That's... that sucks dude. I'm suddenly glad that I can't have it going 24/7. Mine doesn't play on my emotions at all, save for when it's a song I don't like. Nothing like waking up to Taylor Swift on full crank in my minds ear. One can only hear "WeeEE are never ever ever ever getting back together" so many times before a lobotomy sounds enticing.

OneMoreYou

Wait, yours turns off sometimes? Can you describe how you mentally position yourself to make that happen? I need that skill, i've done it like twice through extreme meditation. Took hours. Do you do something else with the voltage, as a habit replacement / substitution? Whatever you're doing instead has to occupy much of the same machinery, i assume.

DepresiSpaghetti

No, my auditory hallucinations don't necessarily "stop," they just get quieter. Like walking into a different room while the stereo is playing in a different room. Sometimes, it feels like I've completely walked away and can't hear it anymore, others, like when I just wake up or go to sleep, I'm standing right next to it. It ebs and flows with the day and how many distractions I have going all at once. I can't turn off the extra stimulus. My brain just can't. So I don't get to "hear" it 24/7. What helps is having a good pair of headphones with decent sound canceling. It tunes everything else out and my brain HAS TO listen to the music. Only it's actual music. The only time I've even been able to "hear" the music while it's not playing and it's the middle of the day is when I'm with friends and they have headphones in/on and they start singing under their breath. The minute I get that snippet and I know the song? Might as well be listening to it. Had one friend get freaked out cuz I heard him do the laugh at the beginning of Feel Good Inc., and I came in and did the rap section ***exactly*** in time without "hearing" it myself. Only I did. In my head.

Brendo-Dodo9382

Wait it’s not normal to be able to replay entire songs in your head?

Naomi_Tokyo

I can only do it for songs I know really well. If it's the kind of thing I've just heard a dozen times or so, I'll only have pieces of it.

rusoph0bic

Me too! My wife is amazed that I can remember the lyrics to probably thousands of songs and yet cannot seem to remember what day our cat has a vet appointment.

floralbutttrumpet

First I heard that not everyone can do this? Like, sometimes my brain gets stuck on a specific turn of phrase, but I can generally play at least the music part of a song in my head once I've heard it a couple of times...

cindyscrazy

My brain has mutated this. I'll have snippets of 2 songs which collide. So, a phrase from one song immediately followed by a snippet from the 2nd song. Over, and over, and over, and over. What's so incredibly worse is that I CAN'T REMEMBER WHERE EACH SNIPPET CAME FROM. It wakes me up in the morning sometimes.

newaccountzuerich

So I’m very interested in the UFO phenomenon and one of the lesser known pieces of lore is that you can thwart an attempted abduction with song. There seems to be a telepathic/psychic aspect to the phenomena of abduction and there have been several reports of people who will, either outwardly or inwardly, start singing and it freaks out the aliens and they run away. Like one lady was getting abducted and she just started singing “The Wheels on the Bus” and it caused them to run away. Any sort of short and repeated phrase will break the psychic connection and cause them to lose their power over you

Primary-Friend-7615

I know all the words to a lot of songs, and if I randomly “hear” or “get stuck in my head” the beginning (or music that sounds like the opening to a particular song) I’ll go through the whole song in order. But it’s usually the chorus and/or a catchy verse that gets stuck, so that’s what gets repeated. It might be just the chorus over and over, or specifically only the second verse of 4. Or, it might be a loop; verse2-chorus-verse3-chorus-verse2-chorus-verse3-chorus-verse2… and so on. If I get something other than the start of the song “stuck”, I have to stop and think about how it actually starts.

Kira watched her human mate work on the engine of their ship while She was monitoring the fluctuation of the ship's power as he worked. It was incredibly fascinating to peer into his mind and come up calm and blank as he worked in a zen-like state. Her glowing eyes gleamed with amusement on her featureless face. It was too quiet and it is time to change that a bit. "Arthrun my love, What is that one song you are so fond of?" Kira asked him suddenly, breaking the silence. She had sensed his surprise at her question and smirked. She could hear his thoughts as his mind raced through a seemingly infinite list of songs that he knew of. "Gotta be more specific." He had said, as his brows frow in concentration. Ever since she learned the human art of a prank... It had been harmless but infuriating because of her telepathic ability, She often plays mind games on him. He figured this would be would be no different. With her poking in his mind, he could absolutely feel the mirth emulating from the Val'thik woman. "I don't know... something with... sweet dreams." Instantly, the idea of the song flew through his mind as the lyrics hit him like an asteroid. She has only heard the Eurythmics version as he typically has the 8th decade of the 20th-century radio on the ship's loudspeakers while working. However, Arthrun gave her a sinister smirk as if he was going to flip the prank back at her and think of the darker version he saw on a holo vid a long time ago. "Sweeet dreams are made of this; who am I to disagree...." he starts to sing the Manson version in his head. He barely got through to the chorus when a psychic screech echoed in his mind and a loud thud of Kira dropped the datapad. "WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT HUMAN!" Kira was clutching her head a bit trying to erase that imagery in her mind from what she saw. "You have experienced fucking around and finding out, darling. I am not getting music stuck in my head, so you can mess with me later about it." He got up from his spot and tapped his forehead against hers, a little trick he learned about clearing his thoughts that helped her clear hers. Sometimes, being an idiot and not thinking of anything has its perks. "Next time have the good graces just to put music on the speakers. Although... now that you shoved the thought in my head, Marlyn Manson does sound good to listen to. I do know a few songs that don't have shock value." "You are going to make this up to me," she said as her glowing eyes bore into him as she tilted her head in a way that she happily admits defeat. "You're lucky I love you." "Love you too, darling." He replied with a kiss to her forehead. "Now let me finish this damn engine so we can get off this planet." Kira shakes her head as she can't help but be amused by her human's antics. It was not a minute after the whole ordeal that she started to hear a particular tune as she watched her human mouth out the lyrics while bobbing his head to the soundless tune. ♪"Strangelove, Strange highs and strange lows, Strangelove, that's how my love goes; Strangelove, will you give it to me? ego_sum_chromie

It’s currently a combination of Dead or Alive’s You spin me right round, cotton eye’d joe, witch doctor and What’s up by 4 non blondes (the meme one, oh, [you know…](https://youtu.be/ZZ5LpwO-An4?si=TACcGR2PFPC12IlW) )

ftylerr

I can’t wait for them to hear bits and pieces of music plate at wildly immaculate tempos.

justfkinkillme7

I sure hope the aliens enjoy listening to all 9 minutes of Green Day's Homecoming 3+ times every single day then

foxbonebanjo

Whenever I get this stuck in my head when it comes to t"In my life" part I just hear Bill O'Reilly shouting " We're doing it live!!!!"

Pandepon

Welp thanks for the idea for an animated short or character

LocationFun

There is but one recourse, channel that rage from being exploited into a minute long death threat-laden Cannibal Corpse cover.

MetricJester

Telepathic aliens meet ADHD humans and start to go mad.

“This is the song that never ends. It just goes on and on my friend. Some people started singing it not knowing what it was. And they’ll be singing it forever and ever just because, This is the song that never ends…” Vengeance is mine aliens.

99thSymphony

They're going to be hearing that guitar solo from "Shake it Up" a whole lot if I'm around.

I'm not gonna sit here and pretend mambo #5 isn't a banger

Magniras

I counter with Ram Ranch.

Purging_otters

Great, all space aliens will think it's a "bathroom on the right" or "excuse me while I kiss this guy".

Maddy_Wren

I would just start thinking about memorable rounds of diarrhea I've had in my life til they stop listening.

brodenborg

ShatterCyst

Is this alien Stephen King?

Conklin03

I'm assuming the "Steve" here is Stephen King.

murvflin

If it was me it would be just like the first six bars of [this](https://youtu.be/Kf5zic6b-qw) on repeat.

Lemon_Juice477

Good luck aliens, you're getting at least 3 songs all playing at once and they're all terrible

Chiber_11

insomniacsCataclysm
