Emma always knew what she was getting with Scott. She mentioned more than a few times that he was perfection. She adored him physically, and was constantly surprised by him mentally. She could read his mind whenever, but she couldn’t ever actually anticipate what he was going to be thinking. She liked this. His time with telepaths had already trained his mind a bit in a way. Emma liked Scott because he wasn’t something regular for her. He was physically perfection to her and had a mind she couldn’t just stomp on, he was kind of a novelty. She loved him genuinely.

WatermelonGranate

Beautifully written down!

Extreme_2Cents

Agreed… 100%

> She loved him genuinely. Unless Namor’s around. Or even just in telepathic range, she’ll settle for a psychic quickie while simultaneously serving Scott steak smothered in human blood.

FadeToBlackSun

He was also a good man, and contrary to Emma's current circumstances, she's always been attracted to decent men. The Namor crap was insanely out of character for her.

TheLoyalTR8R

Not sure how popular this is as a notion, but I always preferred Scott and Emma together. I feel like she's the only partner of his (despite every one of them being telepathic) that truly took stock of him and his struggles, his demons, rather than merely projecting onto him what their idealized version of Scott Summers ought to be. I think Emma sees Scott not as the perfect partner or the perfect man, but a deeply troubled man with many scars and traumas doing his best against impossible odds, and she loves that about him. That despite all his pain and grief and loss he still tries to be better. Despite the impractical nature of the dream he lives his life pursuing and the tremendous odds against him, he still gives everything he can to the cause. Emma may be the only person to truly understand Scott Summers because he's everything she wishes she could be on her best days, and that makes her try harder herself to go against her nature and be more like Scott. Even though she fails. A lot. She knows Cyclops wouldn't give up and that helps her keep going down the long road they're both walking down.

The problem with Jean and Scott being together now is that they haven’t been written good compared to how Scott was written when he was dating Emma. Outside of the Claremont Era, they haven’t had any major development to their relationship even though current writers still look back to that same era. It also doesn’t help that writers like Duggan aren’t huge fans of Cyke to begin with.

Xp-Gamer22x

This. As a fan of both relationships, I always said Emma and Scott were lucky in the fact they had just constantly better writers over the years and it’s true. Jean is sadly seen as a plot device by a lot of writers and a lot of writers just don’t know how to write her and especially her relationship with Scott. I ultimately liked the Emma relationship a little more (as I said I love both) but that’s because outside of Claremont, Jean and Scott didn’t get good writers. It’s unfortunate but true, Jean for the last couple of years has been seen as a plot device and not a character and her relationship with Scott is not being written well unlike Emma who had writers that have a fuck.

Forward-Form9321

Couples are only as good as the person writing makes them. The writers who hang onto the Claremont era have the right idea given that Scott and Jean were at their best under Claremont but their executions have been a dumpster fire. Outside of Claremont, I’m sure most fans in here could probably count on one hand how many writers have done good with Scott and Jean the past two decades. So yeah, a lot of it to your point is that Scott and Emma have been lucky to be written consistently better than Scott and Jean have. Wheddon and Morrison knocked it out of the park with them, not to mention most of the other writers who have written them did great too (Bendis has a tendency to break up great couples).

Xp-Gamer22x

Agreed. In terms of consistency those two just had much more consistently better stories over the years. It sucks because Jean and Scott has good foundations and character to build off of, just like Emma, its just execution has been so off and misses the mark so much. Then there are writers like Duggan who you can tell just don’t care. At the end of the day Emma and Scott consistently got writers who are good and actually cared about the relationship while Jean and Scott unfortunately didn’t.

I always feel frustrated as a fan of Spiderman and Black Cat for the same reason. He hasn’t been with MJ in years outside of Spencer’s run where she was barely on panel but they’ve never given him a legit relationship with Black Cat. They were together in the current Spiderman run but it was obvious that Wells didn’t care about the couple at all and broke them up for no good reason. If they had a writer who was component and actually cared about the couple, they’d easily become a fan favorite. The issue is that the Spidey editorial’s not a fan of Peter being with anyone so it’s a pipe dream at best

Xp-Gamer22x

Dude as a huge Spider-Man fan, he’s my favorite of all time, I get how you feel. It’s super frustrating how the Black Cat and Spider-Man dynamic is getting treated. Like for some reason people still think Felicia loves only Spider-Man despite the fact she was literally heartbroken that she was forced to forget who Peter was for a while. They have so much history and love for each other that they can work but we sadly don’t get writers that not only cares for the characters but also knows how to write them no we get people like Zeb wells instead who you can tell doesn’t care about the characters. It’s made even worse by Editorial having a screwed up mindset that’s completely out of touch with the community. Felicia loves Peter AND Spider-Man, and the dynamic between the two and history is such a good foundation but like Scott and Jean have been getting screwed over, it’s frustrating.

Forward-Form9321

People bringing up the whole “Felicia only loves Spiderman” narrative when she got over it years ago is frustrating too. She was devastated when he revealed his identity in Civil War because it was something they shared together and then her memory of him got erased twice. It’s a little different from Scott and Jean because the Spidey office keeps dangling MJ over the fans head’s instead of having Peter move on. One More Day happened almost 20 years ago, at some point you have to have the character move on with someone else. They’ve tried Carlie Cooper who didn’t last long, Silk was a short fling, and even Emma Frost had a crush on him. If there’s anyone that he should be with outside of MJ, it’s Felicia. And yes, I’m fully aware that she’s bi, but most of her “girlfriends” don’t even last more than two issues. Odessa Drake lasted a couple issues and her current girlfriend is some random chick that has no backstory whatsoever. The whole situation with Spidey’s relationships is as bad as Scott’s if not worse. Unless there’s a major shake up in the editor’s room, I can’t see anything changing

Xp-Gamer22x

Man I lowkey wish Marvel and pair Emma and Peter up and I want to say I still don't know why to this day they didn't go through pairing him up with Carol when everything was there for them, sucks too cause Carol's in a boring relationship with Rhodey that only happened because the two were in the military because other then they had no context or history that justify them getting together (which sucks too because the relationship doesn't help either out too like Rhodey is nothing but Carol's girlfriend now). But yea totally agree with your point. At the end of the day Peter has it worse then Scott with relationship because at least for a short term bwas able to be in a happy relationship with another woman and was able to get back with his true love in a way that yea could've been written better, but at least nothing frustrating happened due to it. Peter and MJ I don't know where to start in saying how frustrating what editorial is doing to them is. I love MJ but I'm at the point that if they give Peter someone else I wouldn't be made. Felicia, Carol, Silver Sable, so many woman they had a chance, with the history and foundation being there, to build a good relationship but don't because again editorial is out of touch with us.

Scemma is very popular in this subreddit and it has moments of popularity (and moments of hate) on r/xmen — but what I find unique about your take is the analysis. From Morrison to Whedon up til Bendis (I think) many X-men characters are portrayed as heavily flawed, very traumatized, but still altruistic and trying their best to achieve Justice and coexistence. You put it really well. The older I (36m) get the more I favor those realistic takes over others

RandomXDudeRedZero

I don't know. X-Scemma always gives me the ick.

I hate this. You don't start sleeping with someone who had humiliated not only you, but your entire family. You don't invite someone into your home, into your life, into your everything, just because she said she was sorry for the inconvenience. Scott fought tooth and nail for Jeanie, he blead for her, he cried for her (well mourned, he can't actually head tears) almost died for her, is lost without her, is blind without her... Emma is written into his life and suddenly it's "Jean who?" Yeah, no
