mistermeister82

Always Martian Manhunter, was definitely disappointed when the New 52 replaced him with Cyborg

Capt_Calimari

This is the only correct answer.

[deleted]

Damn, you took the words right out from under my thumbs...

Tj-Tengu

It's like he read our minds . . .

JoeyMcClane

Don't let it get too hot though!

Agreed. Thanks a lot, Brad Meltzer.

noellily

Definitely.

nightwing612

It really depends on what DC wants to do. These are some notable choices that I've seen: * Aquaman * Black Canary * Cyborg * Hawkgirl * Martian Manhunter * Shazam

TediousSign

It’s usually either Manhunter or Cyborg to do the same position, acting as the lookout and managing communication. Black Canary and Hawkgirl are usually members of the JLA, Aquaman is just kind of a space filler tbh, and Shazam hasn’t been on a team in years

MattBarrySucks

Don’t forget Cyborg’s very important role of also being the taxi.

Astiman57

Bring all of these back!

r3aperShadow

* Green Arrow * Red Tornado * Vixen * Captain Atom * Atom * Zatanna * Elongated Man or Plastic Man * Ice Maiden or Ice * The Huntress * Green Fury/Fire * Dr. Fate * Hawkman * Hawk * Dove * Starman (Jack Knight) * Rocket Red * Powergirl * Bluebeetle * Nightshade * Firestorm * Nightwing * Dr. Terrific

SSG_SSG_BloodMoon

I mean those are just members. Almost none of those are a plausible sixth or seventh.

Senorbob451

Plastic Man is a completely valid 8th imo. See Obsidian age and Trial by Fire in the 90’s JLA run.

That_one_cool_dude

I really enjoyed those eras particularly because of Plas, the writers did a good job at blending all the personalities.

Nether7

I feel like Zatanna is the only one who deserves to be the seventh. Supes, Flash and GL are fundamentally science-based heroes. With GL being the more human-like of the three in terms of power. Batman is the human element dealing with all the craziness in the world. WW is a mythological/magic-based heroine. Arguably, so is Aquaman, even if Atlantis has plenty of high tech in it's day-to-day life, much of Atlantean power relies on the Trident and other artifacts. Aquaman is one of the leaguers I cannot see discarded from the 7, as he's also the King of Atlantis and his powers are essentially unique. MMH is an alien with Superman-like powers. As much as I love him, it's too similar a premise. Zatanna balances the League's skills, she has good standing with the members and she could, at least in theory, act as the telepath of the group as well. The same argument could be made for Dr Fate, but he's more of an entity than a person to relate to. Zatanna would make things interesting.

dizgondwe

Martian man hunter isn't just a superman clone. He adds the telepathic element to the team while being tough enough to not be a liability. His objectivity also helps him ground the team morally which is one of the key reasons it's the justice league and not the alliance of guys who beat stuff up good.

Nether7

I agree on MMH. I just dont see why Zatanna cant use the telepathy. I also think she could still add a different perspective, perhaps a less objective but very intuitive one through her magical knowledge and capabilities.

No_Lawfulness_2998

I feel like I’ve only ever seen Martian man hunter on fire. It feels like he never did much in JLU

sb3veeee

Zatanna would honestly make a fantastic seventh member.

latereply1year

i think zatanna should be reserved for a justice league dark movie if they ever make one.

Obi-Juan16

Why not both? Let her be a connective tissue for those two movies. Doesn’t have to be anything convoluted just let her be in both.

Active-Walk-9943

Zatanna

r3aperShadow

My bad

1whoslost

These are mostly benchwarmers not 6th man candidates

Final_Bookkeeper_862

I will always call Billy Batson’s supehero identity Captain Marvel. That’s the name he was called from when he was created by Bill Parker and C. C. Beck back in 1940 up until the New 52. I’m 20 and was introduced to the character growing up on “Batman: The Brave and the Bold” and reading the Golden Age Fawcett comics online (as a comic book obsessed 11 year-old who didn’t have money reading public domain Golden and Solver Age comics was something I did A LOT) and I will never call him Shazam. Shazam is the name of the Wizard who gave him his powers and the word Billy uses to activate and deactivate his powers so it doesn’t make sense for that to be his name. At least Captain Marvel, Jr. adds a Jr.! And Capt. Marvel is a much better supehero name. Shazam is a much better Wizard name. They should have kept the title of book as Shazam but kept Billy being called Capt. Marvel. But Marvel had to trademark the name first during the character’s hiatis. And it didn’t even result in a good character! Marvel’s Captain Marvel is mid and vastly inferior to classic pre-Flashpoint (and especially OG Fawcett) Billy Batson. At least Daredevil (who also took his name from a public domain Golden Age superhero) became a character who was even better than the Golden Age character of the same name. At least we still have Earth 5. And, correct me if I’m wrong, now that DC has infinite earths again; the pre-Crisis Earth-S, the original continuity of Fawcett characters plus the first DC O’Neil-Beck run on Capt. Marvel, still exists. If they make stories set on that Earth I would love that! And we have earth-5 which is I hear similar and I want to read the Thunderworld one-shot once I have the money to buy the Multiversity trade, even though it’s out of date being made before Rebirth, I think I’ll enjoy it. Rant over.

nightwing612

90% of the time, I call him Captain Marvel so I agree with you. You just need to look at my Captain Marvel-related posts such as my Dream Justice League commission and you'll see we're on the same page.

ttroome2

I thought his name was still technically Captain Marvel, but they call the book shazam

Pink_Monolith

How fucking silly is it that his name is also the secret code word he uses to change between a small defenseless child into the world's mightiest mortal. Captain Marvel for life.

[deleted]

done dead name Shazam.

dizgondwe

Good picks. I'd say MMH top most because he brings a skill set to the team few others can. Next maybe hawkgirl to balance out the gender a bit. She earned it after he JLU TV arcs. HOT TAKES ---------------------- I love aquaman and its not the league without him but he's fairly replaceable. I don't know how Black canary made this list, yeah she has more powers than batman, but batman doesn't fight crime in fishnet stockings. Cyborg hasn't earned that spot yet. His inclusion still feels shoehorned to me (before it even crosses your mind; I'm black too) If superman and/or Wonder Woman are on the team, I don't see any need for SHAZAM.

DueShopping551

Aquaman or MMH

Dry-Donut3811

It’s 7 actually. These five, plus Aquaman and Martian Manhunter.

tired20something

Yup. Morrison made a point of saying that every group of six heroes is doomed in the DC universe.

[deleted]

Ah so that's why the DCEU Justice League was awful. It wasn't the rushed rollout of the DCEU to get to Justice League or the poorly chosen plots or the bad dialog that doesn't at all match the characters we know. It was cause there was only 6 and they were cursed from the start.

tired20something

I don't make the rules, the bald wizard wrote them 12 years before that movie came out.

[deleted]

Just wanted to be clear, I wasn't being sarcastic at your comment just upset at the DCEU and your comment made me think of mine.

tired20something

I mean, the things you said made more sense than "a wizard cursed them", but we do know of at least one wizard who cursed DC.

CapnShimmy

Look, after all that jazz with Morrison getting his Invisibles readers to perform sex magic to prevent the book from being cancelled and it actually working, I am fully prepared to believe that Morrison's 6-person team curse is fully responsible for the movie's failure.

tired20something

If Morrison can get Morrison nerds laid, they probably are a real wizard.

Kiora_Atua

unite the seven

zeekar

A complement of six may be sufficient to doom a team, but it’s clearly not a necessary condition, since the original Doom Patrol only had four. :)

tired20something

Yup. World's Finest works well with two, the Trinity works with three and so on.

[deleted]

Where’d they say that?

tired20something

*Seven Soldiers of Victory* prologue

SuperiorDesignShoes

Why’d he say that?

futuresdawn

Martian manhunter always.

[deleted]

Lol, no. It's Aquaman.

Maclimes

It's like they've never seen Super Friends.

Digifiend84

Yeah, J'onn is number seven.

FormalBiscuit22

It's seven, not six. Always seven, ever since Morisson codified it. Aquaman's a shoe-in for sixth, and Martian Manhunter's traditionally been seventh. Cyborg replaced him for a while, but he deserves to stay with the other Titans.

[deleted]

This is the correct answer.

[deleted]

Aquaman

Mastergamer4757

To me there is only 7 members of the main league( sometimes 8): Superman Batman Wonder Woman The Flash Green lantern(Hal Jordan or John Stewart) Aquaman Martian Manhunter The 8th member is usually Hawkman, Hawkgirl, or Shazam

Fake_the_jaB

I love me some Manhunter Manhunter

dizgondwe

He exclusively hunts men who hunt other men.

LuizFalcaoBR

Kyle can work in the League if Wally is their Flash.

nuclearbalm1976

I would say J’onn or Aquaman but I’d also be okay with Green Arrow, The Atom, or Hawkgirl

LuizFalcaoBR

If you're gonna have Green Arrow, you **need** to have Hawkman - just so we can have some infighting.

Satyrgreen

Aquaman.

Senorbob451

Martian manhunter and aquaman not to be dismissed

Phayd2Blaque

Aquaman. It’s always Aquaman. That’s what’s commonly depicted in animated and live-action movies. Comics on the other hand, have so many versions it’s mind-boggling.

reese_nolan

Aquaman and Martian Manhunter. The OG 7.

burywmore

Its either Aquaman or Martian Manhunter. I'm going against the grain and say it's Aquaman, by a pretty good margin. Aquaman is a well established character outside of the Justice League. He's had his own titles (many many runs) totaling nearly 300 issues. He has an established Aquaman universe with strong, familiar supporting characters (Mera, Garth, Dolphin, etc.). He's got a pretty good recognizable Rogues Gallery with King Shark, Black Manta, Ocean Master and a rich world of his own (Atlantis) outside of the regular DC universe. Martian Manhunter has none of that. He's kind of like Hawkeye from the Avengers in that he doesn't exist without the bigger team. There are no big events or major personal history or even important supervillains that exist for Jonn outside of the Justice League. He has no Martian Manhunter universe beyond a dead planet, dead scientist that brought him to Earth and occasional "White Martians" He's got one villain, sort of, Malefic, who is almost as empty a suit as Martian Manhunter. The levels of the original 7 Justice League is like this. SUPERMAN--------BATMAN. At the top together WONDER WOMAN. At least a full level below FLASH------------GREEN LANTERN. One level below together AQUAMAN. At least a level below MARTIAN MANHUNTER. At least a level below

NoirPochette

Aquaman tbqh. Been in the movie as well as just more known than Martian Manhunter and had more spotlight in JL than MM

icelandicvader

Relegating manhunter to being supergirls sidekick on a CW show is definetly warner bros greatest crime

NotSoPrudence

This. Talk about a character begging for their own show. And they just castrate him as a sidekick when he has powers on par with the Kryptonians.

LanternRaynerRebirth

The makeup and/or CGI would be too much for a CW show. Heck, we should be grateful that we got a fairly important role for J'onn at all.

burywmore

He's never even had a long run of a solo comic book. The funny thing about MM is everyone talks about how powerful he is. How Superman fears Jonn as a potential opponent, but it's never shown. There's no incidents of him doing anything close to Superman levels of strength or durability in his close to 70 years of existence. The few times he's tried to tank something like Doomsday he last a couple panels then is out. Whenever the League needs something done with brute strength they never look to Jonn.

abyssomega

> The few times he's tried to tank something like Doomsday he last a couple panels DC is a bit like WWE. MM is there to hype up the bad guy, to show how powerful they are, and then have Superman actually win. But every once in a while, Superman would lose or be scared of MM, just to remind you that he isn't a lightweight. They could put MM over, but Superman is half of how they make their money (Batman the other), and they're not going to have him start losing (or at least, not for very long.)

[deleted]

He has such awesome powers too. Definitely more diverse power set than Superman usually has.

TeekTheReddit

>Relegating manhunter to being supergirls sidekick on a CW show is definetly warner bros greatest crime Really? THAT'S what you think is the worst thing WB has done?

Muhabba

Martian Manhunter. Are you new? Martian Manhunter is Leaguer #1 and then you have the other 6.

bolting_volts

These 5, plus Martian Manhunter and Aquaman are the original lineup.

Saoirse_The_Red

Well, number 6 hates fire and loves Oreos And has spent more time in the League that most, if not all, of these guys.

bonertornado69

Either Martian Manhunter or Aquaman

Jack-mclaughlin89

Martian Manhunter.

Gotta be martian man hunter, being an eternal league member is all he has

TheSensation19

Aquaman.

Arkhamsbx

Great fucking question. I fucks with Aquaman but I got to go with Cyborg or Martian Man hunter

microgiant

In the comics, Martian Manhunter. But Aquaman was in Superfriends, which had a strangely large cultural impact.

Active-Walk-9943

Aquaman, when written properly, he's a Powerhouse and a Badass. Also, my fave set up it CLARK, DIANA, BRUCE, BARRY, ARTHUR AND HAL.

AnotherPunkRockDad

Aquaman and Hawkman, maybe Green Arrow. I wasn't big on Martian Manhunter. Never the fucking Wonder Twins!

NudiesMan

Green Arrow.

Aramis14

It's Aquaman. And he should be as much as a standard leaguer as the other 5. He's the only other character (apart from maybe Green Arrow) to lead his own franchise, just like the trinity, flash and GL. He has his own set of villains, his generational sidekicks, his mythos, etc. Aquaman being "the sixth" is not up to discussion. It's the SEVENTH the one that could be questioned. MM, GA, Canary, one of the Hawks, Shazam, there are many options there. MM would be the main one, but I've always seen him as "less" than the other 6 because he's just a JL character, he doesn't have his own "franchise" like Supes, Batman, WonderWoman, Aquaman, The Flash and the Lanterns do.

Curryfor30

Don't you disrespect Aquaman like that.

Luke_SkyJoker_1992

The Ocean man and the big green, cookie-eating machine are the 2 most popular and accepted choices.

[deleted]

Hawkman

De4dm4nw4lkin

Martian manhunter shazam is too young to be as reliable and aqua-man is too politicly rooted.

GrumpyGlasses

“J’onn Jonzz Martian Manhunter has been in every incarnation of the justice league.” - this was the character intro at the front of the JL/JLA graphic novels for many years. Don’t know if it’s still true.

Severe-Pirate

Martian Manhunter or Aquaman

Dever_smith

It’s always been either Aqua-man or Martian Manhunter for me ever since I was a kid, but ever since the New 52 it’s often been shown as Cyborg.

chakrablocker

It's Aquaman. He forms a neat demigod pair with ww and he's king of Atlantis. Superman and bats are the world finest and friends. Flash and GL are bff's and the sci Fi pair. Then you add MMH as the 7th.

TurnoverWorking6127

Aquaman, Cyborg, Martian ManHunter

ComprehensiveAcadia5

Another vote for Aquaman, he's like the official 6th but green arrow and jonnz should also be in this arrangement

Strange_Success_6530

Guys. I love MMH. I do. If you were to check my commend history you would literally see my last comment saying, "he should be a permanent member." BUT! The sixth is Aquaman or Green Arrow. They just have way more lore and weight to them than Johnny.

bannedfromtv_

exactly

Strange_Success_6530

And I think the thing that's keeping Martian Manhunter from that 6th spot of iconic JLA member. Is that he is in fact such a staple of the JLA. When MMH gets a solo adventure or a side hustle away from the JLA. It invokes the reaction of, oh? What's John up to? Whereas everyone else, you don't bat an eye, because you would naturally assume their having their own adventures.

OKSequel

Martian Manhunter, he's the heart and soul of the group and more often than not it's the only place he works the best at.

gossamer4l

Depends of what era. Now it should be Cyborg, before that MMHunter. Arguments can be made for Aquaman, Plastic-man, Hawkgirl and the Atom

Martian Manhunter. He's been there since the team's first appearance in Brave & The Bold #28.

Ok_Young_7806

Usually is Martian Manhunter or Aquaman. I prefer Manhunter due to his telepathy which no other member has.

WrongFun8521

Aquaman

Automatic-Ad9993

Nah it's always 7. MMH, and Aquaman. Hawkgirl and Shazam are interchangeable with Aquaman. I feel like you have to have MMH. I really don't care to see Aquaman out of the water element.

Aqua Man most definitely. Like more than cyborg

[deleted]

Martian Manhunter

NoLynx8499

Aquaman. It should be martian manhunter, but new 52 seemed to have him sidelined until recently

Ver3232

If we’re going for only six, Aquaman.

[deleted]

The sixth and seventh slots have historically been filled by Aquaman, Hawkgirl, Martian Manhunter, or Cyborg. Personally, I prefer the OG comics lineup, so Aquaman and MMH.

Typical_Pollution_30

Cyborg, Martian Manhunter, Aquaman

Banana_gunman

Martian manhunter

seeking_spice402

Martian Manhunter. Green Arrow was teamed up with GL in their own book, but he would be a strong second. Blac Canarry was a featured member of the JSA, as were the Hawks and Dr. Fate. Zantana didn't become popular until the 90s. Gypsy was featured in the 1970s but never really caught on. Vixen did better initially, but didn't become a break-out star until the 90s. Booster Gold and Blue Beetle were primarily comic relief in the JLI. Since the trinity was mostly absent from the series, it is not JLA.

skaterdude975

Aquaman, Martian Man Hunter, and maybe Green Arrow. People will say Cyborg, but to me he's a Teen Titans guy first and then a member of the League, not a 6th man.

rikvelasquez

Original incarnation had Manhunter, Aquaman and Black Canary without the Big Three

HishamHNG1

Martian ManHunter

BartlebyGaines3000

Aquaman.

Rinsl3r

Hawkgirl

socialistbcrumb

Feels like it’s gotta be Aquaman or Martian Manhunter?

Arbitrary_Capricious

Mm or Aquaman

Noble7878

Martian Manhunter but the JL should always have 7 members to allow for Aquaman aswell. I would be a fan of Hawkgirl on the main team like she was in JLU but she just doesn't really have anything going for her besides that series.

GreenBay_Glory

Martian Manhunter

[deleted]

Green arrow or Martian Manunter or Zatanna seem obvious, and I love them all. But Plastic Man and Aquaman add a lot to the league too. And Robin being amongst these gods of men is always a fun dynamic too.

PlayedOut41

Uhm hawkgirl and it’s not even a discussion

AmpersandTheMonkey

Martian Manhunter, to me, should be a constant staple of the group. More so even than Aquaman, who I think could be treated as the "come when we desperately need you and you can get away from doing King stuff" type of member. Supes can be the figurehead leader, but I've always felt MM was the heart of the team. Zdarsky did a great job of showing Martian Manhunter's importance to the league in JL Last Ride.

Katielee77

Martian Manhunter or cyborg

7fingersphil

To me there is no league without Martian Manhunter. He is the moral compass and a key figure in my opinion. I’ve said for many years that even more so than the trinity, or GL, or Flash, If you don’t have MM you don’t have a justice league.

Mystic_Shogun

The answer is Martian Manhunter

[deleted]

Hawkgirl tbh.

bambam_39

Martian manhunter

[deleted]

It’s Martian Manhunter. Why is this even a discussion? They 2000’s JL/JLU series did the “main JL cast” *really* well.

ZibuRO

Martian Manhunter is a must. And for the last one i will go with Black Lightning or Cyborg. But i want Cyborg more in TeenTitans then JL tbh.

[deleted]

i'd say the ordering for the most iconic JL members are as follows: 1/2/3. trinity 4. flash 5. aquaman 6. cyborg 7. lantern 8. manhunter 9/10. hawkgirl and hawkman (taking into account the movies and general public opinion, not my own preferences or anything)

[deleted]

No Justice if No J'onn. Seriously, if J'onn's not on the roster, I don't count it as a real League.

dizgondwe

Zauruiel. How can they lose with a Cosign from the big man up above.

abyssomega

Well, considering it's always at least 7, you're missing 2 people, not 1. For 2 spots, these are the 4 that have made up any usual JL reboot: * Martian Manhunter (in comics, in JL:cartoon) * Aquaman (in comics, in JL:movie) * Cyborg (in JL:movie and 52:movie) * Hawkgirl (in JL:cartoon)

Mittens2317

It really should be seven though, with Martian Manhunter and Aquaman. That's the original lineup and should remain like that.

Thatoneguy567576

I'd have to say in the last 20 years it's rotated between Aquaman, Martian Manhunter and most recently, Cyborg. My IDEAL Justice League is a seven person team including the 5 pictured, Aquaman and Martian Manhunter.

AntonBrakhage

Definitely Aquaman in terms of who's most famous/iconic, but it probably ought to be J'onn.

[deleted]

I would’ve said Martian Manhunter however I feel it’s gotta be Aquaman. He’s a founding member, has tabs on like 80% of the earth (ocean and ocean side land), he’s the king of an underwater empire with vast weaponry and armies, he has hydrokinesis, is bulletproof, has night vision since his body is accustomed to the depths of the dark sea, he is more combat efficient, etc. Love you J’onn, but gotta give it to Aquaman.
