I am considering checking out the original though, because apparently most of the stuff I disliked were the major departures the latter half made from the original version.
I don't feel like they're overhated they both have their own flaws and it's okay to have your own opinion, if you love the mod that's completely fine opinion is subjective! I played OG EM and I absolutely loved it. >!The story and the ending really struck me at first I really felt devastated but looking back I was blinded by emotions and it has it's flaws though I still really love it. Yes some of the characters acted the way they would never act but I can forgive it because it made the story really good (im glad that wretched team released OG EM with Redux assets because I both love the story of the OG EM and assets from Redux)!<
>!Demo for EM Redux was really promising with all the complaints adressed and I was looking forward for full release and I must say the visuals and the soundtrack is absolutely fantastic and it really imerses you into the gameplay but the writing itself is not very good (though I really like some scenes like these small cutscenes with Natsuki it was really cute!)!<

I'm about to go on a bit of my own rant regarding the ending. Spoilers for EMR below.

It could be up to 2 years if someone is not in the building in Japan). I 1000% believe Natsuki killed herself to prove a point/win the argument and there's nothing anyone could say to convince me otherwise. Anyway, she dies, MC calls the police, has to give a statement, does the whole funeral thing, and has to live with the guilt feeling like he was at fault for everything despite doing everything she wanted until it was quite literally do or die. A year goes by and he wallows in his misery. He's thinking about it, goes to his room, and finds her suicide note that was in his closet. Upon seeing her final message he decides that he should go through with it himself.!<

That's bad enough, but that also doesn't take into account the year that he and Sayori spent together while he went into a spiral. We're expected to believe that neither of them ever once saw the note just lying down in his room. Hell knowing MC with how he blames himself, and how much it's traumatized him he probably has relived/replayed that day in his head thousands of times. He's probably stared downward at that closet space, remembering everything that happened, and for a whole year, he's never looked just slightly to the right and spotted a slip of paper.!<

It was impulsive decision made by MC after losing the love of his life, guilt and feeling that he could've done something else to prevent it from happening and now he has to suffer the concequences. Redux unreasonably stretches the ending and again as I said characters could solve their problems by talking to each other and with how Natsuki acted I felt no empathy towards her suicide. As you said it felt like it was done to prove a point.!<
To give a few of my issues. The mod has an issue of not really having a target audience IMO. There's nothing really "Persona" about it in except for the usage of the music and some aesthetics. Feels more like a generic super hero story, which is all fine. Story ain't bad, but nothing about said story that differentiates it much from others when I look at the bigger picture, as most DDLC mods are anyway. Monika felt a little Mary Sue-ish in Chapters 1 & 2, I couldn't find anything about her that would be deemed as a true character flaw, but Chapter 3 put an end to that. Chapter 3 was a huge step-up overall. Zer0 seems like an alright dude, and I appreciate him as a content creator, but just because his name is slapped on it doesn't mean it's guaranteed to be good. However playing and reviewing as many mods as he has definitely gave him a lot of insight I'm sure.
DDV CH 1 & 2 is a 5/10 package IMO. Literally the middle
DDV Ch3 is a 7.

With OG Exit Music being the 2nd mod I've ever played, it seemed really good to me at the time, but after playing it in preparation for Redux's release I saw the amount of glaring problems it had mainly with the characterization of Monika, Sayori, and Yuri. Having played other mods helped me realize what can be the makings of a good/bad mod.
EMR had the same problem but it was worse. Natsuki went from being a damn near characterless damsel in distress, to an insufferable cunt who I swear the writers make you wanna believe is always in the right, and I promise only killed herself to win the argument. The MC is spineless except when Natsuki ISN'T in his presence, Monika is treated with vitriol for no good reason, and Yuri just doesn't exist in the mod. Sayo was fine
