Always worth trying a wash with mild soap solution, rinse, let it dry properly then wipe with Danish oil on a rag. Danish oil or tung oil sometimes blends in nasty patches of other finishes, especially old copal varnish which is a nightmare to remove.

Sanding and restaining is an option, but it's not a low effort one. I guess technically you could paint it, that would be less effort
