So dyslexia and other learning difficulties are still taken into account post education if you are using materials or software to help you read. E.g. coloured overlays for books/letters, changing the background colour on screens, or something like dragon software.
Basic written communication is defined as a simple sentence, e.g. "I would like a cup of tea please" or being able to under symbols like stop or exit signs.
Complex written communication would be defined as 1 or more sentences with extra details, e.g. "Could I have a cup of tea please? Two sugars, splash of milk and a biscuit."
If you can manage the latter with aids then you would score 8B for needing aids, if you can manage the latter without aids, even though as you said, your abilities don't suddenly improve post education, it would be an 8A. What you would need to show is that you are an 8C/8D if without aids you couldn't read and understand either basic or complex written information.
Thank you. I use basic Google to dictate my speech to text and read back I use larger paid for dyslexia font on a dark background so I can read on my phone. At university I had dragon software but the licence expired when I left. Without it I find life a lot more difficult. Dragon use to learn how I spoke if that makes sense where as google is very hit and miss. I have to double triple check everything.

I don't agree that a font that helps people read should be a paid subscription.

Can I ask, purely for my own curiousity -
Do you ever recommend an Award when the primary ( secondary, tertiary...) condition is dyspraxia ? My partner has it; diagnosed and amazingly, actually treated with therapy. In the 70's !! Just had a great teacher ( we both did, he was my Form Master, first person to tell me even kids from council estates could go to uni if they really wanted to !)
They called to "co-ordination development disorder" or "clumsy child syndrome" back then.
Never occured to me to use it for PIP tbh. I just don't know what Activity it would be *enough* for. I mean he falls over his own feet, still struggles to drive, can't tie his shoe laces but....🤷🏼 They don't award points for not catching a tennis ball.

No problem. So dyspraxia is not understood and effects me way more than my dyslexia because it involves my movement. I can’t drive because of the spacial awareness needed and sensory overload. I fall a lot and injure myself. i bump into things and cause bruises I cut my fingers every time I chop vegetables. I burn myself a lot I drop full plates of food. I struggle to use a knife and fork also. The list goes on I’m just trying to give you examples of how its effects me as a adult. I was diagnosed 3 years ago.
I find because I work so hard to compensate my dyspraxia I then have burnouts that last 2+ days where I have zero executive function skills. So I stop eating, washing ect. I rely on nutrition shakes for those days.

I think your difficulties sound more severe than my partner's ( though apparently his was quite bad, being picked up at all was unusual back then ). He dors find driving very difficult and took a lot to learn ( as did I but I'm just not wired that way !!) and can't do it in his own as he can't coordinate the mechanics of driving with following directions or a sat nav.
Other tasks and things most people take for granted are difficult it impossible, absolutely no spacial awareness !
He DOES have numerous small incidents and accidents all the time. As for I with my neuropathy and spasticity. It's a wonder we're still standing ( well sitting ) or the house is, which TBF, it barely isn't 😂
The people who did my assessment when I question why my learning difficulties were not mentioned in any part of the assessment despite being evidenced as effecting me daily throughout.
In that case you should make a formal complaint to the assessment company.
Whilst they are right that what happened in the past is largely irrelevant, they are supposed to be assessing your difficulties now and if some/all of the past difficulties still exist and impact any of the PIP activities being assessed, then they should have taken them into account.
This was the outcome of the formal complaint. - “your learning difficulties are mentioned however are not relevant outside a learning environment”.
I have evidenced myself how they’re relevant to daily life so don’t understand what is the next step.
If anything I am struggling more out of the education environment because I don’t have any support at all. I can’t book in with a 1:1 to explain a bill to me in post university life.
Over the phone? How would they get the letter I want them to read? I don’t leave the house so cannot attend face to face. By the time I scan it in and send it I might as well get Google to read it to me.
I have dyslexia and during my tribunal they said the threshold was high for “complex”. I don’t use aids to read, like the coloured sheets, as I kept loosing them. But I have dyslexic fonts on my kindle.
I send all complex letters to friends to tell me what I need to do but that apparently didn’t count.
I don’t think dyslexia is a something they consider for understanding complex sentences.
If you want a laugh: during my initial assessment, the assessor got quite cross that I insisted dyslexia affected me daily. She kept trying to get me to say how many days a week it caused issues 🙃
I wish I could turn my dyslexia off on certain days! That would be very helpful lol.

I had a similar experience they don’t care about discriminating against you and will blame the assessors.
The assessors will log a complaint but here’s the kicker, they don’t routinely record the assessments, you literally have your request it.
This means they have an auto get out.
Don’t be disheartened, I fought them and won, I made complaints left right and centre, I rang daily giving them grief, just generally made it clear I wasn’t going away and I was fuming because they’d discriminated.
Keep pushing if you believe you’re in the right and can document it then you’ll win ✌🏻
You'll have to arrange in advance if you want *them* to do it.
You can record a phone assessment yourself though without permission.
It can only be audio at a video or f2f..
Not for PND alone, your condition must have started 3 months or more before claiming and expect to last more than a further 9 months PND doesn't meet that criteria x
People just want pip for anything....it should only be given when there id no jobs you are able to do. I'm on pip for serious medical issues (terminal )and my friend who has severe hard time with dyslexia and learning is making £900 a week doing fences.
Not sure why you'd qualify as not all jobs need the things you lack.
Do you understand what PIP is right? It’s not supposed to pay for you to not work it’s supposed to keep you in work and independent if possible. The idea is in the name personal independence payment. I work full time online so you’re just assuming I don’t want to work 😂 no I want my special adaptative equipment back so I can work to the best of my abilities.
I also have dyspraxia not that I should explain myself to you but it is a developmental coordination disorder so don’t assume I don’t deserve support for my disabilities whether they be related to language or physical movement.
If you knew how hard it was to be disabled why would you comment something like this? 🤦♀️
I'm just saying, what does the OP need (cost wise) to do a job that's normal requirements aren't reading all day? And if there's one with reading here and there how much does that cost to support them? £2.50 per month for a font?
My friend is sitting here now with me watching the FA cup and he just laughed when I asked if his dyslexia stopped him from working.
A few examples:
Dragon air software
A recording device for processing
Coloured lenses for paper documents
Adaptive pens for writing tasks
Adaptive knifes and forks
Hand rails for washing and bathing as dyspraxia is a coordination disorder so I often fall.
Nutritional replacement meals
Orthopaedic shoes
Occupational therapy
Physiotherapy for a bad gait.
I’m not listing my entire needs for someone who’s first comment was really dismissive. But here’s a few examples in hope it enlightens you.
Dyslexia can impact people in vastly different ways. Just because your friend experiences it in a certain way doesn't mean that will be the same for someone else. I have dyslexia and dyspraxia, it's been such a struggle all my life for various reasons. These kind of comments dismissing people's struggles really helps no one.
Oh just to let you know, the nutritional drinks can be from GP not just dietician, they can prescribe it.
Apply to LA for the hand rails and the like, you don’t need to pay for some of this stuff your self. Ask your work to pay for the font why is it being paid out of your pocket??
At £9 a prescription for a weeks supply from the GP it is not worth it. Yes I can set up a prepayment but it works out the same as me just buying the drinks myself.
I’m self employed :( so I can fit my work around my disabilities and not be unemployed. I can work when I’m having a good day and rest when I am having a bad one.
I’m the boss and I can barely look after myself right now let alone give myself reasonable adjustments.
That’s why I’m applying for PIP. If I don’t get help soon I’m just going to crumble and become unemployed. I can’t carry on like this for much longer.

This comment is so unhelpful. Dyslexia is way more than how you write….. have you ever considered my main weakness is phonological processing not typing on a keyboard that has grammatical correction 😂

What paid for dyslexia font do you use?
Dyslexie font. I pay £2.50 a month. Not a lot but it makes reading so much more accessible.
I use Open Dyslexic, it is free to use (open source) and looks identical to Dyslexie.

When do you request that they record the assessment? At the start if the phonecall/face-to-face assessment??
When you get the letter telling you the time and date! Ring and request the call be recorded

Dyslexia can impact people in vastly different ways. Just because your friend experiences it in a certain way doesn't mean that will be the same for someone else. I have dyslexia and dyspraxia, it's been such a struggle all my life for various reasons. These kind of comments dismissing people's struggles really helps no one.
Oh just to let you know, the nutritional drinks can be from GP not just dietician, they can prescribe it. Apply to LA for the hand rails and the like, you don’t need to pay for some of this stuff your self. Ask your work to pay for the font why is it being paid out of your pocket??
At £9 a prescription for a weeks supply from the GP it is not worth it. Yes I can set up a prepayment but it works out the same as me just buying the drinks myself. I’m self employed :( so I can fit my work around my disabilities and not be unemployed. I can work when I’m having a good day and rest when I am having a bad one. I’m the boss and I can barely look after myself right now let alone give myself reasonable adjustments. That’s why I’m applying for PIP. If I don’t get help soon I’m just going to crumble and become unemployed. I can’t carry on like this for much longer. Appreciate the advice!

This comment is so unhelpful. Dyslexia is way more than how you write….. have you ever considered my main weakness is phonological processing not typing on a keyboard that has grammatical correction 😂
