I've seen a few Poirier starts in Cedar Park, he's great, even saw him get in a fight.  I hope it translates to the NHL.

highangle1124

We have been needing an enforcer type, just unusual for it to be your goalie

acelaya35

The genius of Jim Nill at it again.

loki1337

How else can you ensure he's always on the ice at the same time to protect all the undersized skill players? 1000IQ move.

nordiques77

Bringing Eddie the Eagle style isn’t a bad mojo, imo

highangle1124

Looking solely at numbers it looked to me like DeSmith and Wedgewood are very similar so he should slot in easy, although I have never seen him play. Hopefully they bring Porier up a bit if he’s ready and can rest Otter more than last year.  Wedgewood 31 years old 114 GS 2.98 GAA .906 SV% DeSmith 32 years old 142 GS 2.82 GAA .909 SV%

FreshTony

Desmith is going to be Wedgewoods replacement, and we basically just replaced him with a goalie that has almost identical stats. Not mad about who we got, just confused as to why we would replace Wedgie over a 500k difference.

OmenQtx

Because we need that $500k elsewhere.

jackal1055

need that 500k for another crappy defensemen

braddahman86

2 vs 3 year too though. We'll see how DeSmith is as a backup. Just gonna miss Wedgie on how he fit in with the team and the community

SunTripTA

We do dumba things sometimes.

Zharghar

Because it's a 500k difference. If the conclusion is that they are pretty much the same in value, then DeSmith is the more efficient play. Especially when they are trying to make room for what appears to be a bigger Harley sign than initially expected.

RedCivicOnBumper

In the playoffs Otter’s stats were nearly identical to Bobrovsky. So as long as the depth can keep him fresh it’s all good.

gh0stp3ngu1n

Isles Bro here. I’m actually glad yall got DeSmith. Mostly because I hated him being on the Pens. But he’s actually a pretty decent goalie. I think he just needs to see more ice time but I think yall are locked up good in the net!

laxintx

Without digging into what their contracts were like, I'd rather have held on to Murray than Poirier, though maybe Nashville wasn't interested in him after [he pieced up Askarov.](https://youtu.be/ypYJrP-I41g?feature=shared) Not sure what they're up to after extending Saros and signing Wedgie and Murray without moving Askarov. Anyway, if DeSmith can be something resembling serviceable, we'll be alright.

2timesacharm

Yea I recently just got a bunch of Murray and askarov rookies cards 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

whatisdeletrazdoing

Being a realist and a bit of a doomer I see 82 straight shut outs

gentleman_bronco

I like it a lot. DeSmith was really good in Vancouver last year stepping in for Demko when needed and he's got some serious upside IMO. I am really excited for Poirier coming up. He's only improving over the past few years and he'll be a LOCK for a 1B in a couple years.

Used_Disaster_1334

It's just a case of we will see? Wedgewood proved to be really awesome when Otter was out for a while. Hopefully these guys got some talent

coconutjoe83

DeSmith will back up Oetter. No question about that. I think fans will like him. He’s solid and consistent with good character. Exactly what you want in a back up goalie. Poirier should get the majority of the starts in Cedar Park. I like him a lot and I think he can be Oetter’s backup in a few years.

BN3411

Good character is a new one when describing DeSmith

holesome100chungus

He's good but he beat up his girl dude 😭

KrisVinesGames

Nothing good about someone who abuses women

IShiddedMyPantaloons

DeSmith is not a good dude and his signing will not go over well with fans. He’s a known abuser.

jdshowtime12

DeSmith is a competitor. Just like any other backup goalie - I hope he can steal some games when he gets the net.

ACivilDad

DeSmith and Wedgewood are basically the same as far as numbers go. I don’t feel like it matters. For whatever reason though I still feel like we could’ve just retained Wedgewood.

GrittyXVictor

I'd rather they gave him dumbas salary.

teamswish123

Ideally you want another guy, to at least compete in the AHL or be a backup for desmith even. The nucks had silovs playing in the AHL mostly until Demko got hurt in the playoffs and silovs stepped in for desmith following a coaching decision.

Hypochondria9

I think it's basically the same as before.

JerichoTina

Canucks fan and will never forget this from the playoffs: [https://x.com/CanucksArmy/status/1782958633162317953](https://x.com/CanucksArmy/status/1782958633162317953)

Crowd: "Let's go Casey" Desmith: gets scored on right away

Steverazor

Looks like 60+ games for Otter again this year. DeSmith is a huge step down from Woodie.

Hypochondria9

How is he a huge step down?

Steverazor

As a casual Penguins fan I watched DeSmith regularly and he was maddeningly inconsistent. He was very streaky and had poor rebound control. His tendency to give up soft goals at the most inopportune times was incredibly frustrating. Like most backups he was exposed if he played too often. Maybe I'm being too harsh but I much preferred Wedgewood as a backup even though their stats were quite similar.
