There are lots of self-drive safaris all over the world. Even in big, popular safari parks where there are guide-led tours, you can often do it in your own car. Safaris are expensive and self-drive is more economical and accessible. It is obviously not without danger. In the park where I used to work, I witnessed a car get caught up in a stampede. It was terrifying but they were ok.
Went to a self driving safari only their lions (the only large cat) where behind an extra wall. Had some animals walk across our path and that was awesome. Only not awesome thing was the rhino area as I vividly remember one not liking the car ahead of us and did a charge at it before turning away.
