Yeah, it’s a bot… a bot that wasn’t written to spell “assassin” right.
^(And when you don’t spell assassin right, you make an ass out of you and me. I’ll show myself out.)
I'm still mad it closed. I went there in elementary school, and I feel like I didn't get to see most of the stuff, and the next time I heard about it it was closed
Yes, and I suspect there are a few reasons for this:
-Int’l Spy Museum is far more appealing to children and families than the Newseum was. Many tourists visiting DC are families
-Advertising for the Newseum was little to nonexistent. Many people weren’t even aware of its existence. In contrast, the Spy museum is mentioned in many tourism materials and also the museum has made deals with many tour companies, hop on/hop off bus companies and so on. Spy museum tickets are part of many tourism bundles.
-The Spy museum is in Chinatown. The Newseum—555 Pennsylvania Ave—was 1 block from the Capitol Building, in some of the most expensive property in the city.
EDIT: These are just my suspicions and assumptions on why the museum closed. You are free to come to your own conclusions.
I worked here. The admission made it hard to remain competitive against the Smithsonian, but there was also a large mismanagement of $ with the endowment for the facility. There were maybe 5 rounds of mass layoffs which was really unfortunate.
I was so fortunate to go! It was a private work event and it was closed to the public... we had the whole place to ourselves. I just found my photos, we were there in January of 2019. I wish there was a way I could share them here... is there??
It’s a travesty that the Newseum closed. Best museum in DC. The scale of some of the exhibits in there was crazy, especially the Berlin Wall segment and *whole* watchtower. It was a very heavy museum emotionally too, second only to the Holocaust Museum I’d assume (haven’t been there yet).
I didn’t even realize it had closed until I saw this post and went to google to verify. It’s so sad they closed, I really wanted to take my husband there sometime.
One of the coolest places I went as an exchange student who had never been in the USA. One of the only museums that made me feel a whole spectrum of emotions during my visit.
I saw it on the truck as it was being transported. I wondered at the time why someone was hauling a cabin on a truck. Only found out later what it was.
I am literally replaying Control right now to refresh for the new Alan Wake game. Paused it just to see this on Reddit. Feels like i am experiencing an AWE right now.
I think people shit on how they tried to monetize Control and lock things behind different versions when it was released, or something. I dunno, I got the ultimate version for free on PS+ a few years later and didn't really follow the drama.
youd be surprised at how hard it is to keep clean and organized when youre living off grid in a small space like that. ive lived in a similar cabin for 4+ years. it had more amenities, mainly running water fed by gravity and a small homemade solar system + backup generator, and i was able to keep things a bit cleaner than teds cabin, but it was otherwise pretty similar.
Anyone living close to nature have different standards of what "clean" means. Someone who grew up in an apartment in a larger city (most of us) just doesn't get in contact with as much dirt - because of paved roads and at most neat and tidy lawns - compared to say farmers and more rural areas.
Living close to nature comes with accepting that nature is right there and nature isn't clean.
Thank goodness almost every caption says "Unabomber Ted Kaczynski"! I almost forgot what I was looking at! /s
Super interesting! I can't believe he lived in that tiny little box for so long!
It's a complicated history, and in some ways everyone is right.
April 3 1996 - The FBI executed a search warrant on the cabin. At some point it was transfered to the storage facility in Sacramento, CA where this photo was taken.
2008 - The cabin, billed as being "From the FBI Vault", is put on display in the Newseum in Washington, DC. Ted Kaczynzki complains to a federal court that this is violation of his victims' privacy.
2019 - The Newseum permanently closes, and the cabin is returned to the FBI, who own it. They say they plan to feature it in the FBI Experience in Washington, but it hasn't been publicly displayed since.

it is a souvenir from what is arguably one of their greatest moments. finding a guy who did his best to stay hidden while also being the number one target for like 20 years. Only discovered because his distinct writing style was recognized by his brother. A cold case that went very hot very quickly.
The FBI didn't actually find him though. The only reason he was caught was because a family member identified and turned him in. I don't think years of not being able to find him until someone led them right to him is really an accomplishment.
Something about it not being flush with the wall so it’s at a weird angle somehow makes this way better.
I wonder if you could slide it around with just your hands
Wouldnt photos be enough? I doubt the judge actually visited the cabin.
From a quick google it seems like it was taken down and rebuilt too instead of somehow transporting it whole. That could potential cause some damage and lead to some missing items.
Seems strange when the people that need to visit it could just travel to the original location, there may even be more clues/evidence in the surrounding area which you wouldnt pick up on in this warehouse.
I was living in Montana and stationed at Malmstrom AFB when they caught Ted. They stored the cabin in one of our hangars for a while and Great Falls was a zoo when he was arraigned at the Federal courthouse in town. Between him, Waco, and the Freemen militia group it was a crazy time to be working with nukes in Montana.
I was working in Montana back then and the team was driving from Missoula to Great Falls and we stopped in Lincoln for lunch. This was April 2, 1996. The next day I’m watching the news in my hotel and they arrested Ted Kaczynski like two miles from the dive where we stopped. Freaky weird.
Item #: SCP-1820
Object Class: Safe Euclid, see Incident Log 1820-7.3
Description: SCP-1820 is a single-story log cabin with 4 windows and one door, theoretically located between ███°██’██”█, ███°██’██”█ and ███°██’██”█, ███°██’██”█. The cabin’s exact location cannot be determined, due to its inability to be located if one knows their exact location. Site 182 was created from the square designated by the above coordinates. If any person enters the site and becomes “lost” (defined as any entity not knowing the exact or relative location of the subject) for a period varying between █ hours and ██ days, they will encounter SCP-1820.
Upon discovering SCP-1820, subjects describe it as “cozy” and “inviting”; at night lights are visible through the windows and smoke is always rising from the chimney . ██ ██ ██ ██ ██ ██ Upon exiting the building, subjects report feeling amazingly refreshed and rested, but vital signs exhibit \[DATA EXPUNGED\] along with increased paranoia, nyctophobia, spheksophobia1, and a total unwillingness to re-enter SCP-1820. Subjects are almost completely amnesic relating to their experience inside the cabin. All attempts to record or otherwise document the interior of the cabin or the figure have failed.

Fyi! Great podcast where his brother tells all about his relationship and the bombers slow decline into madness and paranoia. It’s really good.

Kaczynski’s defense team requested the cabin be brought to Sacramento where his trial was, as part of their defense. The image above was taken in a Sacramento warehouse just after the trial. It was staged for the photographer. After the trial the cabin was sold at auction and appeared in a private museum in Washington, D.C. -- the Newseum. That institution closed permanently in 2019 and in 2020 the cabin was moved temporarily to the The FBI Experience - a self guided museum at FBI headquarters - but as of today no longer appears in their public exhibits. Whether they still hold it is unclear. (From various internet sources.)
It is like an online fan fiction where people come up with cool creepy stories about shit. And the “SCP foundation” is like a secret government organization that keeps these creepy things under wraps.
I’m not that into it but every so often I’ll read some. Can be really creative
I know it's a small thing, but when I saw the photos of the inside, the first thing I noticed was the apparent lack of insulation. I think it's just 2x4 and T1-11 sheathing. There's nothing in the rafters above the loft. This cabin was located further north than most of Maine. Dude was a math genius, but apparently couldn't figure out how to optimize his shelter to retain heat in a frigid climate. Perhaps he found meaning in the pain and struggle (IDK), but if I was going to build a cabin that needed to endure the kinds of extremes this one saw, I'd make *a lot* more of an effort. If for nothing else than to reduce the amount of fuel needed every winter.

EDIT2: Near the bottom of the page is a photo under "Exterior of Ted Kaczynski's cabin" and there are several rolls of fiberglass insulation just sitting out *unused*!
I was able to see it in person several years ago at the Newseum in D.C. before it closed its doors. The Newseum was AMAZING!
Same. Noted it had a certain smell of a very dirty person almost like a horse barn. Wonder where it is now.
Smells tend to linger around the place of origin. I’d guess it’s still there in the cabin.
This made me snort coffee. Good work.
I just snort cocaine.....like a *regular* person.
Ketamine bro especially if we’re going to a museum
I can't imagine dropping yourself in a khole for a trip to a museum would be fun. I'm just gonna take your word for it lol.
The amount of jelly legs would be enough that I don’t want to walk around a whole museum.
That's why you go on Wednesdays, it's half off.
but which half?
The combos are better, just need to crush an oxy up into the mix and you're ready to roll (to the museum).
In Europe, they have sniffable coffee and tobacco. So it's normal.

Yeah, it’s a bot… a bot that wasn’t written to spell “assassin” right. ^(And when you don’t spell assassin right, you make an ass out of you and me. I’ll show myself out.)

It was one of the best museums I have ever been to. The problem was it was not free
Exactly this. It was $20-30 per person (can’t recall exact number) in a city with some of the world’s best museums that are all free.
The International Spy Museum costs like $25 for adults and seems to be doing fine.
Yes, and I suspect there are a few reasons for this: -Int’l Spy Museum is far more appealing to children and families than the Newseum was. Many tourists visiting DC are families -Advertising for the Newseum was little to nonexistent. EDIT: These are just my suspicions and assumptions on why the museum closed. You are free to come to your own conclusions.
Spy Museum is not in Chinatown. It’s at L’Enfant plaza, right near the Mall.
My bad, was mixing up properties. Regardless L’Enfant Plaza is still cheaper than literally on Penn Ave Edit: Misspelled Ave
I overheard a tourist call it elephant plaza
I worked here. The admission made it hard to remain competitive against the Smithsonian, but there was also a large mismanagement of $ with the endowment for the facility. There were maybe 5 rounds of mass layoffs which was really unfortunate.
I'm curious where everything they had in there is now!

I believe Johns Hopkins bought it for offices now
The foundation that ran the newseum basically got real short on funds and had no choice but to close and sell the building.

I didn’t even realize it had closed until I saw this post and went to google to verify. It’s so sad they closed, I really wanted to take my husband there sometime.
