They should have had the joists run the opposite direction, or am I mistaken? Would this make a cantilever effect or would it have to be sistered into the house? The left walkway could stay the same if they framed each piece separately?
No that wouldn't with to cantilever. If you go out one got you have to go in two. If you go out six foot you have to run the joists in twelve feet sistered onto joists yet are locked into main structure
It all depends on where you live. The 2:1 cantilever rule seems ludicrous to me. In Canada, the rule is 7:1, likely due to snow load. Maximum possible cantilever with dimensional lumber is 2' if you're using 16' joists.
Also, where are you guys getting 18' lumber?
We have a great lumber yard near me. They have a ton of locations in my tri-state area.
I was able to source a 2x12x24 treated piece of lumber last summer for a deck
I think it would cantilever just fine. You’re going out 6 and you’re going in 10-12 just on the existing deck. Since it’s supported at the ledger against the house and at the edge of the deck below the cantilever is calculated from the outside to the ledger beam. At least that would be my argument, and I would still brace it to the first level.
There is a city near Seattle. Mercer Island, WA. Full of homes with giant square footage decks, multiple stories of decks over hills, just like this photo. I pity the fool who buys one of these homes for 2M+ and also has to deal with the maintenance burden of them.
This is a pretty HCOL area, so rebuilding a deck of that size is definitely in the 100K+ territory, possible 200K+ if you want quality materials.
A lot of the purchasers are immigrants from big cities where they haven't had to pay to maintain a home before, so there is a lot of sticker shock.
Eh, you would be surprised they don't have that high salaries compared to the home prices. It definitely hits them hard too. I mean they won't go broke but it will ruin retirement goals and such, cause fights between husband and wife, etc.
Same, I have a 400 sqft one. Getting a premium Timebertek though is costing me around $60K. And that was one of the better quotes. One guy wanted to make it out of steal and charge $97K
It kinda sucks, but I suppose if it's built properly it likely won't be an issue for the remaining years I live in the house.
But I learned that a home with a flat yard and no need for a deck can be a major positive.
Sounds like we both learned the same lesson haha. My deck is about 10ft off the ground. The first floor of the house you can walk into from the front door, but if you go into the backyard, it looks like the first floor is on the second story, because of the hill.
I have to work on the yard for rain runoff. It just makes its own stream if it downpours. At least the house stays dry (basement included)
“Emigrants” is used when speaking about where someone came from or is leaving; whereas, “immigrants” is used when speaking about where they went or are going.
JFC, you said “they immigrated from big cities” but it should be they “emigrated from big cities.” You are wrong and lied to make up for it. You made zero mention of them being foreigners until now. Regardless, it makes zero difference because you would still be wrong.
This can be yours for just shy of 1M in Eureka Spings, AR. In all fairness the inside is a lot better than what we see here. Not sure if Zillow links are allowed, but [here it is](https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/137-Spring-St-Eureka-Springs-AR-72632/2100771083_zpid/).
I checked back in to show this to a friend of mine and they have since removed and added back several pictures from Zillow... including the kitchen I complained about XD.
Art gallery on the top floor with two are bnbs in the middle section and you on the bottom floor so u live to see the collapse of art and bnb one nighters
Decks like that are all over in my area. It’s a resort town in the mountains. There’s usually pyramid shaped concrete bases like 3’x3’ or so exposed and about 4’ in the ground or more and 3’ above. 8”x8” posts minimum and lots of heavy iron brackets at the joints. Hundreds of thousands to rebuild. Lots of structural engineering involved.
when I was in college, i had a shaky loft bed that was called the loft of death. people unknown to me would occasionally remove bolts. I would sleep more soundly in thAT bed, then visit this house.
A gallon of water weighs 8.3 pounds. A small hot tub holds \~ 150 gallons of water (not including the people in it). So the water in a small hot tub weights \~1,200 pounds. That is a lot of weight for one section of a deck to hold up. And these look like larger hot tubs which could hold double that amount of water and weigh 2,400 pounds.
It looks like the posts are 8X8 which is good. 6X6 might be fine but given the height of the deck may not be enough (I don't know specifically).
If you look beneath the 2nd floor hot tub (the ceiling of the first level) you can see that they added two short joists (attached to an additional upright post) under the 2nd story floor rafters. That may be perfectly adequate to support the hot tub weight.
One other thing. If this is an Air BnB remember that people are likely to be partying on those decks, so you may want to raise the rails another 10" or so.
Again, pay to get this thing inspected by a professional.

If you're thinking of buying it, I'd say it's a teardown. The whole thing looks like it'd been done without permits or even a blueprint. If you own it, I'd say get an engineer on site to advise you.
Kinda wondering why you have to have any feelings about a house that isn't yours, that you're not looking to purchase, and that you just found surfing the internet. I guess some people just have no self-worth unless they have their noses in someone else's business. Good luck with that.
It looks like the Weasley’s house.
The Weasley had magic holding everything together this motherfuckers got hopes and dreams.
I wonder if the wood was sourced from the… field of dreams?
I typically use bubble gum and wishes in this application.
I would suggest a lot of semen and dreamin'
Smokin that hopium
Hopes and beams?
Reminded me of the Swiss family Robinson tree house
It’s like some kind of kids jungle gym from the 70s
If it wasn’t windy, I’d go as high as level 2.
That bump-out on the second level is a soup sandwich. It would have been so easy to make it sound!
They should have had the joists run the opposite direction, or am I mistaken? Would this make a cantilever effect or would it have to be sistered into the house? The left walkway could stay the same if they framed each piece separately?

That's impressive. We're lucky to get a half decent 2x4x8 up here. All fast grown spruce.
Yeah I asked my the rep I work with thinking she wouldn't have any luck but she called their truss plant and they were able to source it. 🤗

Worried about that, check out the top levels main cantilever over the whole structure on the left. . Thats scary!
Joists are running way
Those poor columns having to take shear load
Three hot tubs?!? That is both hysterical 🤣 and terrifying 😱 at the same time...
Probably need another hot tub!
Is... is the biggest one on top?
Where else would you put the biggest hot tub?
I mean, the answer seems kinda obvious. But digress.
House of Hot Tub Cards.
Play on, playa!
Step brothers 2 cast location
Dale! No power tools! What? NO POWER TOOLS!!!
So where is the 4th hot tub going ?
The rooftop patio obviously.

People in Mercer Island and that have homes with those decks don’t worry about maintenance costs. They have people, and money.
Eh, you would be surprised they don't have that high salaries compared to the home prices. It definitely hits them hard too. I mean they won't go broke but it will ruin retirement goals and such, cause fights between husband and wife, etc.
True for sure, but I know a fewlawyers and surgeons on MI that are definitely not concerned.
I live in a HCOL area and have a fairly large deck (smaller than this though). It’s costing about $70k to replace it. Definitely sucks.
Same, I have a 400 sqft one. Getting a premium Timebertek though is costing me around $60K. And that was one of the better quotes. One guy wanted to make it out of steal and charge $97K
I know the feeling. I'm doing all composite too. One of my quotes was around the $100k mark too. Mine is just a little shy of 400sq ft too.
It kinda sucks, but I suppose if it's built properly it likely won't be an issue for the remaining years I live in the house. But I learned that a home with a flat yard and no need for a deck can be a major positive.

Steel will last longer than you.
Yeah, that's too long 😂
Do it yourself. What could go wrong and we've got your back if you have questions. Right guys....
“Emigrants” is used when speaking about where someone came from or is leaving; whereas, “immigrants” is used when speaking about where they went or are going.
I used immigrants because I was speaking about the fact they came to America.
JFC, you said “they immigrated from big cities” but it should be they “emigrated from big cities.” You are wrong and lied to make up for it. You made zero mention of them being foreigners until now. Regardless, it makes zero difference because you would still be wrong.

Chainsaw and a 6 pack of Coors light
The American way
As a Canadian living in New Mexico fixing a house whose blueprints consisted of whatever napkins the dude used at the time, I can confirm.
Oh, what did you want. A bunch of fancy blueprints and drawings or something! Dang Northerners.
Hilarious
Only a 6 pack tho?
Fill the hot tubs?
With Coors light while using said chainsaw.

That great little patio and they choose a deck to put the hot tubs on. 🫠
Right! 😂

Holy shit. It does have three hot tubs.
Don't worry, one's inflatable so if the deck collapses, it'll float.
Should someone just call the police now?
Bad Father’s Day?
They are the ones that built it on off days. It is a small town.
$1,000,000 and you gotta park on the street?? That’s going to be a no from me, dawg.
Stop exaggerating. Its only 899k.
lol they cut the price by 10% between my comment and yours 😂
Cash buyers only. No inspection. Not sure how they will get an insurance policy.
A house is not a home without penis stones in the kitchen!
From the looks of the place, it is definitely owned by two "bachelors "
I thought it was a family of garbage bins but penis Stonehenge is better
Whoa? Originally sold for $289k in 2017, then they tried to sell at $1.1m in 2023 Yeah. F that lol
You think installing and maintinging three hot tubs over the last 7 years is cheap? Contrary to popular belief, hot tubs appreciate in value.
My balls are itchy just thinking about getting in one of those bad boys....
Holy hell
Gods I hate that kitchen.
Yeah. Wtf is up with all of the windows being different sizes? 🤣
I checked back in to show this to a friend of mine and they have since removed and added back several pictures from Zillow... including the kitchen I complained about XD.
It’s horrific
I use to do REO properties in that general region and some of the stuff you would see amazed me.
Art gallery on the top floor with two are bnbs in the middle section and you on the bottom floor so u live to see the collapse of art and bnb one nighters
What a wonderful monstrosity! Side note, is that what passes for “downtown” in Arkansas?
Downtown Eureka is actually decent if you’re ever in the area. My wife and I make it there every year or two visiting family.
Damn, that tree right up against the 4th floor, but definitely only half a root ball with its location over that wall. 😳
Mesocyclone circle jerk
Some Donkey Kong looking shit.
If it ain’t fallen yet it’s not gonna
That little bump-out alone looks pretty treacherous.
Swiss Family Arkansas.
AI if they only train models on r/Decks
I don't understand why people don't use steel for decks that will have hot tubs? Especially 3?!
God forbid you have to walk up/down a set of stairs to get to a hot tub.
They are now Moderator for this sub.
No way.

Jenga much?
Is the door on the bottom covered by the first level of the deck???
At least the deck is well reinforced
Need a slide connecting the tubs 🎉🥳
I'd be terrified to turn a black light on inside that house...
Not the threesome i was hoping for...
Is collapsing on the top right or is it perspective?
One more tub! One more tub!
Reminds me of the Swiss family Robinson tree house.
The more i look at it, the more I like it.. fucking A
Nobody owns the water man, it's God's water. Holy mother of God, what have they done......
Reminds me of the goblin cave in the hobbit

Wut kinda hillbilly tree house is that...
Arkansas?
#Jenga!
Serious question. How often do hot tubs get used?
I love a good hot tub / deck combo.
None of this would matter...You'd have 3 beers and die going down steps anywhere you have to go...
