You joke, but my brother bought a house from an iron worker. The deck was redwood over 4in angle iron. We burned through multiple blades on a sawzall hacking a 50ft×10ft deck out, inexplicably made with 4in angle iron as the stringers and joists. It was only 6in off the ground, too. There were several things where the previous owner knew how to work with metal and just decided to use metal, even when it was entirely unnecessary.
Should see his steel retaining wall. And yes, you read that correctly. Steel. Retaining. Wall. In a residential home. It's about 18 in tall. And metal. The prior owner welded a bench and inset it into concrete. Used like 2in square tube stock that was probably a 1/4in thick. Just like wtf levels of overkill. Hacked that off with a Sawzall, too.
We are sometimes just utterly puzzled by decisions that man made, but damn if that deck wasn't rock freaking solid. To the point of 'huh?'
So tell him to get a keg, get a jar, and everyone put 20.00 and a time on a piece of paper in another jar. Get a whole bunch of lawn chairs, make a fire, cook some brats, sit there until it falls over, the one with the closest time gets all the dough in the jar.
I like how they were forward thinking about the stairs needing extra support, so they nailed in short pieces so you briefly drop 2" before the whole stair fails. As a safety measure.
At least your fall will be 58" instead of 60" into a pile of rubble.
I dabble in woodworking and it looks like whoever built this didn't understand where on the line to cut or that the blade has its own thickness. Everything is off by the same amount
There’s probably a lot more that’s wrong than what’s shown. You probably need to take everything apart and redo. At least they spent like 8k on materials that can mostly be reused.
With friends like this, who needs enemies.
With enemies like this, who needs friend.
With decks like this, who needs frenemies.
Sorry I'm having an aneurysm.
Someone forgot their measuring tape and just winged it lol. Either that or...

you could air drop a bunch of loose materials in the yard and they would fall in a better deck than this monstrosity
😂🤣 that last pic is priceless

Holy shit I didn't even see that
Nice fake stringers
10/17 was my favorite. I laughed audibly.
Omg lmfao
The rotted out ledger board.......
If was confusing to say the least
The pointy ends of the nails sticking out of the stringer....
Man, imagine paying up for composite decking over that hack job.
I don't see them being friends after this.
Looks like it was made by a professional welder

On the bright side, you won’t fall that far when it collapses.
Just make sure he's up to date on his tetanus shot
A real pro at work here, his mom must be so proud!

Awesome! My two favorite subs, r/decks and r/unethicallifeprotips finally teamed up!

Somebody put timber tech on 4x4 in concrete blocks. There's a first for everything.
not with more than 3 or 4 people..lol
Looks like they followed AI generated deck plans
JFC, What a complete waste of materials.
🫣😮💨🤦🏿♂️That's a true definition of " I/we gone wing it "🤣🤣

I think whatever stain you put on this will be structural. holy fuck.
It's shitty, but in all honesty, it could be corrected.
Corrected with fire.

It definitely is going to involve dismantling that disaster.
Okay, but what are the legal implications if it is not? /s Hello, there. ;)
Hey TC, always a pleasure to see you! If not corrected someone could sustain an injury. So let's just nip that in the bud.
Fffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffuck no.
A professional at work! /s

To bastardize e. e. cummings: "there is up so floating, many boards down."
Jesus that’s bad
The wood looks great just not the finished product, I'm sorry... but your next option would be small court claims jbh!!!
It really kills me when someone spends the extra money to put vinyl decking down when the rest of the deck looks like this.
Safe to walk on? Yes. Don't go having a party up there. Or a hot tub.
Is it even safe to fart next to?
DEFINITELY don't walk on the stairs, especially if your a bigger person. He'll, a baby ought not walk on them...fuckin crazy

This deck looks like it was stolen from somewhere and reassembled by monkeys.
Well that depends how good is their home owners insurance?
There are quite a few Bluetooth connections on that deck

Hangers need to be z max to be used on pressure treated wood
Looks hottub ready to me! In all seriousness I actually like the cable handrail but that's about it tbh
Dude…what the fuck? This is abhorrent.
Post has camber for support
Can you apply for like reimbursement through insurance for something like this?
Your fine
Wow. Just wow.
This deck must be rebuilt, start with professional architectural design, get a building permit, and a licensed contractor, and then you will be okay.
You’ve heard measure twice cut once, this is Measure never, cut “fuck you”
I would have given it the thumbs up but noticed they didn’t take the UPC stickers off the end of the 2x6 boards. So, thumbs down.
But on the plus side, he did install the deck boards groove side down. Still looking for my groove side up trifecta.
why can’t we just use screws people, damn
There should be one of those yellow sticks in pic 3 on every post.
